With 16 numbered double-page engraved plates. Brown morocco (Lyon, ca. 1900) with gold-tooled turn-ins, signed by L(ouis) GUÉTANT.

      - Brunet I, col. 1258; James Ford Bell B-426; Sabin 7935. First edition in French, published one year after the first German edition, of the first work attributed to David Cranz, missionary in the Moravian United Brethren, best known for his 1765 description of Greenland. The present work gives a history of the United Brethren, their beliefs and their practices, both in Europe and in their missions in America. The church was established in 1457, but the book concentrates on its history since its establishment in Herrnhut (Saxony, near the Moravian border) under Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf in 1722. Under his guidance the church set up their mission in Greenland in 1733, and a 1747 act of Parliament under George II granted them permission to practice their religion freely in the British colonies in America. The illustrations show ordination, induction, baptism, communion, marriage, exorcism, an agape feast and other activities in the Moravian Church, as well as their missionary work among black slaves in the West Indies (2 plates), American Indians (probably in Pennsylvania) and native Greenlanders. With the gold-stamped leather armorial bookplate of Noé de Salvert. In very good condition, with occasion light marginal foxing. The beautiful binding by the deluxe binder Louis Guétant (active in Lyon ca. 1895-ca. 1920?) is in fine condition, with only a couple scratches on the back cover. A rare and important primary source for the Moravian United Brethren, with remarkable plates of Greenland Eskimos, American Indians and black West Indian slaves.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charl [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Octavo (198 x 120 mm). Contemporary French cats-paw calf, gilt spine decorated with floriate motifs (grape-and-vine tools at foot), red edges, marbled endpapers. Eight engraved folding plates of naval manoeuvres, typographical head-pieces and wood-engraved tail-pieces. Binding only lightly rubbed. An excellent copy, crisp and clean, with the terminal advertisement leaf. First edition of this important influence on the development of English naval thought; "divided into 4 pts: manoeuvring of ships, evolutions, miscellaneous marine matters, signalling, and also a glossary of terms. It was later translated by David Steel and incorporated into his Elements and practice of rigging and seamanship [1794]" (Craig). "Though less illuminating on fundamental principles than Morogues its methods of handling a fleet are more fully elaborated, and it ends by heralding the final reform with an explanation of the system of numerary signals devised and practised by that all too little appreciated genius Mahe de la Bourdonnais, under whom the author must have served in India." (Corbett, Signals and Instructions, 1776-1794, NRS Vol.XXXV). Despite Kempenfelt's efforts (he produced a translation of the signal portion of the book in 1781), a full translation into English was not made until 1788. Provenance: ownership inscription verso of first blank, and elegant engraved book label to front pastedown, of Devis Decrès, future minister of the navy under Napoleon. Decrès had a brilliant career, a midshipman in 1779, he took part in operations in the Caribbean from 1780 to 1783, promoted to ship's ensign in 1782 at the time that he took part in the Battle of the Saintes. His ownership inscription gives his rank as lieutenant, placing purchase of this volume between 1786 and 1793, when he became a captain. Arrested as a noble at the outbreak of the French Revolution, he was reinstated in 1795 and placed in command of the Formidable, and in her took part in the attempted invasion of Ireland in 1796. He was promoted to contre-amiral in 1798 and commanded a light squadron during the invasion of Egypt, covering the landing in Malta. He took part in the Battle of the Nile in the Diane, managing to avoid the slaughter, and escaping to Malta, raising his flag in the Guillaume Tell. He was captured trying to break the blockade, and eventually exchanged back to France in August 1800. Napoleon personally presented him with an honour sabre, and appointed him maritime prefect at Lorient. From 3 October 1801 to the fall of the Empire in 1814, he served as Napoleon's Minister of the Navy, being made a duke in April 1813. During the Hundred Days Decrès briefly resumed his post as Minister of the Navy. He died in a house fire in 1820. Scarce commercially and uncommon institutionally: Copac cites copies at five British and Irish institutional libraries (BM,Cambridge, Scotland, NMM, University College London), OCLC adds 17 institutions worldwide. A lovely copy in period calf with a distinguished provenance.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition 3 illustrated fine engravings from Plover engraved by Le Mire, repeated title vignette and two headers. Binders full glossy and marbled calf. (back of half-title: printed by [George-Adrien] Crapelet), 1827. Large 4to (32 x 23 cm).) With 70 hand-coloured engraved plates. Later 19th-century red half morocco, red textured cloth sides, gold-tooled spine, decorated endpapers printed in gold on white, gilt edges.

Brunet III, col. 795; Colas 1765; Hiller, p. 526; Lipperheide 1077. First edition of a series of 70 beautifully coloured plates of European women's costumes from the 12th to the 18th century. Most plates were engraved by George-Jacques Gatine after paintings by Louis Marie Lanté; the descriptive text is by Pierre de Lamésangère. The text briefly describes the lives of the women portrayed and often includes a descriptions of the clothes worn, which makes the series an interesting survey of fashion design. It showcases "vertugadins" (farthingales, said to have been introduced in France by Eleanor of Austria), "mouches" (beauty marks), chaperons, "pianalles" (flat shoes), hair-styles, hats (including the typical hennin), etc. One plate with a small tear, foxed throughout, the plates slightly browned, hinges reinforced. Binding professionally restored. A very attractive record of seven centuries of fashion design.

History of the Colony of Nova-Caesaria, or New-Jersey .

1765 - SMITH, SAMUEL. The History of the Colony of Nova-Caesaria, or New-Jersey: Containing, an Account of its First Settlement, Progressive Improvements, the Original and Present Constitution, and other Events, to the Year 1721. With some Particulars Since; and a Short View of its Present State. Burlington: James Parker, 1765. x, 573, [1] p. Neatly rebound with eighteenth-century marbled paper over boards, antique-style calf spine. Modern endpapers but retaining original flyleaves. The usual sporatic foxing and occasional browning always found in this book, but a very good copy. With the signatures of Anna A. Mickle (1902), Mary E.T. Lord (1884) and an undated earlier signature of Mary Ridgway. Removed from the original pastedown and laid in is the eighteenth-century stamp of "H*ELTON," identified in an earlier hand as probably Hannah Borradaile Elton (1731-1799). The first edition of the first general history of New Jersey, printed by New Jersey's first printer. James Parker left his Woodbridge printing office in the care of his son and moved to Burlington to fulfill a long-standing promise to Samuel Smith to print his history as soon as it was ready for the press. The printing press used was one belonging to Benjamin Franklin and formerly used by Franklin's nephew, Benjamin Mecom, in Antigua. The press was shipped from New York to Burlington in April of 1765, used for the Smith book and three or four smaller Burlington jobs, then sent on to Philadelphia in February of 1766, at which time Parker returned to Woodbridge. The press run was 600 copies, as indicated by Parker's bill to Smith. Parker printed two title pages simultaneously on a single sheet, thus providing each title page a blank conjugate for binding that also precluded the need for a free front endpaper. This old-time and cost-saving printer's trick, combined with stop-press alterations in the text of a number of sheets, has led past bibliographers to speak of two distinct issues of the book. There is absolutely no correlation between the uncorrected and corrected sheets and the two title pages; all were freely mixed by the binder without any discernable pattern or priority. Occassionally light browning to leaves and a few scattered brownspots. Scarce first edition comprising his famous map of North America, first published here. "Engel's map covers all of North America from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Circle and from the Grand Banks to what appears to be a proto-Alaskan archipelago. It is presented on an unusual equidistant cylindrical projection, possibly on the c. 1745 Cassini-Soldner model. Engel's map consolidates numerous cartographic theories, reports from voyages both dubious and factual, and established conventions from earlier maps, into a sophisticated and fascinating examination of the general layout and waterways of North America. Samuel Engel (1702-1784) was a Swiss geographer, agronomist, and mathematician active in the middle part of the 17th century. His main work, Memoires and Observations was published in 1765 and while somewhat obscure today was highly influential in the 1700s. Engel argued that ice only formed in fresh water and that, such being the case, the Arctic Ocean would be ice-free and navigable closer to the poles. Engel's theories influenced exploration in search of the Northwest Passage, specifically, the launching of the disastrous 1773 Phipps expedition to the North Pole. He also wrote several articles for Diderot's Encyclopedie, including a description of a pre-Columbian Chinese colony in North America - Fusang. Engle also argued that Baron Lahonton, an enigmatic explorer of America's inland waterways, was in fact fictitious - though he nonetheless incorporated Lahonton's geography in his own maps". - Sabin, 22571.

¶ "Remarkable didactic works... He wanted geometry to be rediscovered by beginners and therefore put together, for himself and for them, a very optimistic history of mathematical thought that reflected the concepts of his contemporaries Diderot and Rousseau... Through analogy, he went from there to more advanced and more abstract research, all the while resolving problems without setting forth theorems and admitting as obvious all truths that showed themselves to be self-evident. This work is pleasant and has definite pedagogical value." DSB III, 284 - Poggendorff I.447 - Pas dans Sotheran.

Paris: Dessaint & Saillant, 1765. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (252x200 mm), [1-3] 4 [5] 6-7 [8], [1] 2-161 [1] pp. and folding plate with diagrams. Contemporary French calf with 5 raised bands, gilt in compartments and with red morocco label (hinges cracked, extremities worn, boards rubbed), red-dyed edges, marbled endpapers, text only very minor spotted and age-toned. ----DSB III, p.283. SECOND EDITION (the first in France of both papers unified). First published in 1752, this discourse won the annual prize at the Russian Imperial Academy. "In 1743 Clairaut read before the French Academy a Paper entitled 'L'orbite de la lune dans le systeme de M. Newton,' Newton was not fully aware of the movement of the moon's apogee, and therefore the problem had to be reexamined in greater detail. However, Clairaut - and d'Alembert, and Euler, who were also working on this question - found only half of the observed movement in their calculations. It was then that Clairaut suggested completing Newton's law of attraction by adding a term inversely proportional to the fourth power of the distance... The minimal value of the term added soon made Clairaut think that the correction - all things considered - could apply to the calculations but not to the law... Clairaut found toward the end of 1748... that in Newton's theory the apogee of that moon moved over a time period very close to that called for by observations. This is what he declared to the French Academy on 17 May 1749. This first approximate resolution of the three-body problem in celestial mechanics culminated in the publication of the Théorie de la lune in 1752 and the Tables de la lune in 1754." (DSB III, p. 283). Very Good.

History of the Colony of Nova-Caesaria, or New-Jersey ....

, 1765. 1765. SMITH, SAMUEL. Modern calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards, very skillfully executed in period style. Noticeably foxed, as usual, a few blank corners torn away without loss. With contemporary ownership signatures of Burlington County residents Saml. Black and Abner Wright. The first edition of the first general history of New Jersey. Parker printed two title pages simultaneously on a halfsheet, thus providing each title page a blank conjugate for binding that also precluded the need for a free front endpaper. This old time- and cost- saving printer's trick, combined with stop-press alterations in the text of a number of sheets, has led past bibliographers to speak of two distinct issues of the book. There is absolutely no correlation between the uncorrected and corrected sheets and the two title pages; all were freely mixed by the binder without any discernable pattern or priority. See Felcone, Printing in New Jersey, 1754-1800: A Descriptive Bibliography, 105, for an exhaustive history and analysis of this cornerstone New Jersey book.
