THE ROAD FROM BOSTON TO ALBANY BY WAY OF SPRINGFIELD AND GREAT BARRINGTON.[AND].BY WAY OF NORTHAMPTON TO ALBANY [manuscript title within the map].

[New England. 1765]. - Pen-and-ink on laid paper, with the road colored in sepia and with water elements in green, with a yellow wash border within the gradients, on seventeen (of eighteen) sheets. Sheet size: 27 1/2 x 214 inches, overall, if joined. Minor repairs, one small blank section in the upper border lacking. Very good. Provenance: Sir Francis Bernard, Colonial Governor of Massachusetts (1712-79); by descent to Robert Spencer Bernard, Nether Winchendon House, Buckinghamshire, England. A truly massive road map, measuring over seventeen feet from east to west, showing the roads across the colony of Massachusetts in great detail. It is one of only a handful of road maps to survive from the colonial era. It was created for Sir Francis Bernard, then colonial governor of Massachusetts. In November 1969 noted historian of cartography William P. Cumming discovered in the family home of Sir Francis Bernard "a collection of maps that, in purpose and type, differed so markedly from the more usual military, coastal and general colonial maps of the time that it stands out in both interest and importance. These were domestic maps, of a gentleman's estates and the roads to them.Probably Sir Francis's most important contribution to cartography was to have careful surveys made of the roads from Boston.westward to Albany, New York, on a one-inch to two-thirds-mile scale. It was along part of this Albany to Boston road that the American rebels dragged the heavy cannon captured at Fort Ticonderoga that, set up on Dorchester Heights, forced General Howe's evacuation of Boston in 1776.No route maps as detailed as these, except for two short New Jersey road maps, are known for any other section of the eastern seaboard until those of Christopher Colles in 1789" (Cumming, pp.29-30). The present manuscript map depicts the road across Massachusetts, but does not extend as far as Albany. The road, divided into miles throughout, extends from Boston to Springfield, where it splits into two westward routes to Albany: the first a more southerly route via Great Barrington, Massachusetts, which ends on the present map at a point approximately thirty-three miles from Albany; and the more northerly route which is shown on the map as far as Northampton, just past the Connecticut River. The map is done on a very large scale of approximately two-thirds of a mile to the inch, with towns, rivers, mountains, residences, meetinghouses, and numerous taverns identified along the way. Cumming records this map (as four separate entries [i.e. MP21-24, although with an incorrect sheet count]). Comprised of eighteen sheets (one narrow blank sheet is missing), the top half of the map is comprised of ten narrow sheets, varyingly long and short, while the bottom half is comprised of eight uniform sheets, each measuring 18 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches. The sheets are as follows: 1) Southeast corner of the map, blank except wash border. 2) Blank except for wash border with a segment of rhumb line. 3) [missing, but would clearly be blank except for wash border with section of rhumb line] 4) Text reading "Boston to Albany." 5) Text reading "Way to Spr-" with part of the southern road. 6) Text reading "-ingfield" with part of the southern road, including Springfield and the Connecticut River. 7) A small sheet containing text reading "and" and part of the southern route. 8) [blank except for wash border] 9) [blank except for wash border] 10) Southwest corner of the map, blank except for wash border. 11) Northeast corner of the map containing Medford, Boston, and the route as far as Framingham. 12) Text reading "the road" with the northern route from Sudbury to Westborough. 13) Text reading "from" with the route from Shrewsbury to Leicester. 14) Text reading "by" and "road b-" with the route from Brookfield west to Coy's Hill and the Porpoodock Mountains. 15) Text reading "-y way of Northampton to Albany" showing the route from Belchertown to Northampton, including part of the Connecticut River and the Hadley

Paris, an 3 – an 6 et sans date. ». - Rudel du Miral, conventionnel du Puy-de-Dôme. L.A.S.          The County of Bedford Surveyed Anno MDCCLXV and Engraved by Thomas Jefferys Geographer to His Majesty. [together with] The County of Bedford Reduced from the Eight Sheet Survey By Thos. Jefferys Geographer to his Majesty.

London, 1765 - Jefferys' fine large-scale map of Bedfordshire Engraved map on eight sheets, fine original full wash colour, inset plan upper right, together with the map reduced onto one sheet, fine original full wash colour, with contemporary manuscript annotations. Jefferys finely engraved large-scale map of the county of Bedfordshire, in original full-wash colour; together with the rare key sheet. Thomas Jefferys was involved in one capacity or another in no less than ten English large-scale surveys in the latter part of the eighteenth century. The present map of Bedfordshire was his second foray, having engraved Benjamin Donn's award winning map of Devon in the same year. A great amount of detail is marked on the map, including market towns, parishes, churches, seats or noted houses, farms, cottages, parks, turnpike roads, enclosed roads, open roads, roads opened on one side, distances from London marked in print numerals, distances from Bedford marked in common numerals, names of Roman Roads marked in gothic script. To the lower right is a fine title cartouche depicting a rural scene; upper right as an inset plan of Bedford and scale bar. The map also bears a dedication to the Duke of Bedford, lower left. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most important and prolific map publishers of the eighteenth century and was appointed Cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1748, and later to George III. Apart from his publishing business he produced many important atlases and maps of America and the West Indies and surveyed and engraved many large-scale maps of English counties including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Westmoreland and Yorkshire. The huge cost involved in these projects was a major contribution to his slide into insolvency and he became bankrupt in 1766. Surprisingly it made little difference to his business activities, "having found some friends who have been compassionate enough to re-instate me in my shop". One of these friends was Robert Sayer who joined him in partnership and whose imprint appeared on the later editions of some of Jefferys' large-scale surveys. John Ainslie (1745-1828) began his career as an apprentice to Thomas Jefferys in 1762. It is here, it is assumed, that he first learned the talents that made him the greatest British land-surveyor of his generation; Jefferys would have taught him the mechanics of the map and print-trade, engraving but most significantly surveying and mapmaking. As the Seven Years' War and its American phase, the French and Indian War, drew to a close, Jefferys turned his attention away from military mapping, to large-scale surveys of the English counties, with Ainslie and a fellow apprentice, Thomas Donald, and Joseph Hodkinson (fl.1765-1812) taking a leading role. They produced maps of Bedfordshire (the present map - circa 1765; six sheets), Buckinghamshire (1770; four sheets), Cumberland (1770; six sheets) and Yorkshire (1772; twenty sheets). Scale: 2 inches to one statute mile. Roger 2 & 3. (if joined) 1880 by 1160mm. (74 by 45.75 inches). Key sheet: 690 by 460mm (27 by 18 inches).

MÉMOIRES ET OBSERVATIONS GÉOGRAPHIQUE ET CRITIQUES SUR LA SITUATION DES PAYS SEPTENTRIONAUX DE L'ASIE ET L'AMÉRIQUE

Lausanne: Antoine Chapuis, 1765. Title in red and black, engraved vignette on dedication page. Two engraved folding maps. Quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt stamp on upper cover. Minor repairs to top and tail of spine. Very good. Provenance: Marinens Bibliothek; deaccessioned by the Garnisions Biblioteket in 2017. Engel availed himself of the most up-to-date geographic intelligence on the region by explorers and cartographers such as Kirilov, Buache, Delisle, and Gmelin, evaluating each in order to come to a more accurate picture of the Arctic. He stated definitively that California was not an island but rather a peninsula and rejected the fantastical Sea of the West asserted by Buache and Delisle. On the other hand, his critiques of Müller's map of Siberia were unfounded, and his understanding of the rivers of Western North America was described by Wagner as characterized by remarkable imagination. The maps are by the Swiss cartographer Jacques Antony Chovin. "Contains accounts of the Cabrillo, De Fonte and De Fuca exploring voyages up the Pacific coast and definitively refuted the conception of Californian insularity" - Howes. Lada-Mocarski notes that Engel "examined diligently the maps and writings of Kirilov (the compiler of the first Russian atlas), Buache, Delisle, Muller, Gmelin, and others - and invariably, with some justification, found something wrong with each of them. He examined these works with regard to the northern parts of both Asia and America. Most of the questions he raised were valid and the present-day student of these regions would profit by reading his work with a modern maps before him, to see who was right or wrong - and when wrong, how wrong. A valuable part of Engel's present work is his rejection of the persistent belief held by many of his contemporary geographers and cartographers that California was an island. He unequivocally asserted...that (in translation), 'California is not an island but a peninsula.'" HOWES E149. LADA-MOCARSKI 18. SABIN 22571. STREETER SALE 3460. WICKERSHAM 3542.

Robert Barclay was a 17th-century Scottish Quaker and considered one of the most important Quaker authors. His most important work, ‘An Apology for the True Christian Divinity,’ is often thought to be “the most impressive theological writings of the century and often marked by the eloquence of lofty moral convictions.” (Garnet, 226). ‘Apology’ was written to be an elaborate statement for the Quakers to hold certain religious fundamentals which were outlined in one of Barclay’s earlier works, the ‘Theses.’ According to the DNB, “Barclay's great book, ‘The Apology,’ is remarkable as the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and is not only the first defense of those principles by a man of trained intelligence, but in many respects one of the most impressive theological writings of the century.” A rare 1765 edition of Barclay’s ‘Apology.’ This edition is the eighth overall English printing of this work but the first published by Baskerville.          Observations sur l'histoire de France

pal la Compagnie des Libraires, 1765. Due volumi di cm. 16,5, pp. xx, 453 (1); viii, 427 (1). Graziosa legatura coeva in piena pelle con titoli su tass. e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso; tagli spruzzati. Impercettibile mancanza ad una cuffia. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Edizione originale. Cfr. The author gives a precise list of bays, ports, goods and production, a history of the trade there and the importance of its geographical location for the security of New France, since New Caledonia formed a peninsula in front of Quebec. The author also gives an overview of the relations and conflicts between France and Britain over this territory. An important account and without doubt the first on this region of the North-East of Canada, which became home to a number of people from Poitiers, who shaped the language of Acadia, and 12,000 of whom were deported in 1755 to other British colonies.

[Attributes: First Edition]

1765 - An unpublished account of an expedition throughout Santo Domingo, illustrated with manuscript maps, bound in contemporary red morocco. N.d. [c.1765]. S.l. [Santo Domingo or France]. 4to (203 x 160 mm). 4 [blank], 63 pp., 5 [blank]. Contemporary red morocco, boards with double gilt fillet and interlaced floral pattern, spine densely tooled, raised bands, lettered in gilt, excellent condition. Manuscript on paper, in a single and perfectly legible hand; very clean, the maps with fold tears without loss, else in excellent condition. 24,000 $ Unpublished manuscript account of Lescallier´s voyage throughout the Spanish part of Santo Domingo, bound possibly for presentation in contemporary red morocco, and illustrated with four folding manuscript maps of the Island. The illustration is comprised of 4 folding manuscript maps and plans –most with wash colour- all of remarkable quality and beauty: Croquis des passages à gué des principales rivières dans la route du Cap à Santo Domingo par Sentiago; Plan de la ville de Santo Domingo, relevé par Daniel Lescallier en l'année 1764; Petit Yaque dans la plaine de San Juan; Carte itinéraire des deux routes principales de la ville espagnole de Santo Domingo en l'Isle St Domingue. The book contains a complete description of the routes from Daxabon to Santo Domingo, capital of the Spanish part of the Island. The first route took him through Boca de Hamina, Santiago de los Caballeros, and other places, the second was further south: Banica, San Juan, Azua, Baini, Candelaria, Nisao and Jaina. His observations are comprehensive and detailed. Lescallier (1743-1822) was a French Officer of the marine, commissioned mostly to the West Indies; in 1764 he was posted in Santo Domingo for a two-year post under the orders of the Comte d'Estaing, later the Antilles, Demerary, Berbice and other places, always in the quality of French officer to colonies, allowing him access and geographical information. During the years of the Empire he is commissioned as Council of State in charge of the colonies, and later. In 1788 he begins studying vessels, concluding in an important study of the management and equipment of them. He authored several works about the French colonies in the West Indies, the Black population, and the Marine, including a treatise on vessels as well as the translation of The Mutiny of the Bounty –commanded by Bligh- into French, this is to be one of the most important naval scandals of the British Marine of the 18th century; he also wrote the “Exposé des Moyens de mettre en valeur et d’administrer La Guiane”, 1791; “Traite pratique du greement des vaisseaux et autres batimens de mer”, 1791, and “Voyage en Angleterre, en Russie et en Suede, fait en 1775”, 1800, printed by Didot. Lescallier also published an abridged edition of Stedman´s “Voyage a Surinam”, titled “Notions sur la culture des Terres basses dans la Guiane”, 1799 (cf. Sabin 91083). This is probably Lescallier´s rarest work, which has remained unpublished to-date, thus full of research potential. Of this account, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France only has a manuscript map titled “Carte itinéraire des deux routes principales du Cap Français à la ville Espagnole de Santo Domingo, relevée par Daniel Lescalier en 1764”, accompanied by a note "Communiqué par le Cen Lescallier en l'an 8" (Département des Cartes et Plans, SH Pf 150 Div 4 pièce 7 D). Provenance: M. Hurson, conseiller au Parlement and Mayor of Martinique, armorial bookplate on front pastedown. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         Reliques of Ancient English Poetry:

London: for J. Dodsley,, 1765. Consisting of Old Heroic Ballads, Songs, and other Pieces of our earlier Poets, (Chiefly of the Lyric kind.) [Together with] EVANS, Thomas. Old Ballads, Historical and Narrative. London: T. Evans, 1777. 5 volumes, foolscap octavo (180 × 115 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, spines gilt in compartments with flower and star tools, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, single-line rules and cornerpieces gilt. Half-titles in Vols. II and III (all issued); errata at end of Vol. III, advert and notice to the binder not bound in. Engraved frontispiece by C. Grignion after S. Wale, engraved leaf of music at end of Vol. II, title, head- and tail-vignettes. Bookplate to verso of each title page. Some joints starting, head of spine to volume V a little scuffed, occasional light spots but contents generally clean and fresh. An excellent set. First editions. The dedication to Reliques, though signed by Percy, was written by Samuel Johnson. Johnson had in fact offered to do much more, but the task of helping Percy select and annotate the material fell instead to Shenstone. "Most of Percy's contemporaries welcomed the Reliques as a powerful blast of fresh air. 'Poetry has been absolutely redeemed by it', wrote Wordsworth ('Essay supplementary to the preface', Lyrical Ballads, 1815, 3, 75). Several generations of poets felt its influence: Blake, Coleridge, Keats, Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, and many lesser lights. Scott, both as novelist and ballad-editor, owed a debt to the book, as did figures such as Bürger, Herder, and the Grimm brothers in Germany, and by extension European Romanticism in general" (ODNB).

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
