        Dell'antiche colonie venute in Napoli:

Naples: Fratelli Simoni, 1764-1773. First edition. Very Good/The rediscovery of the ruins of Herculaneum in 1738 and subsequent excavations at Pompeii gave rise to a sort of mania for the antiquities of Naples and the Campagna, affecting international decorative styles for a generation. The monarch, Carlo VI, commissioned a multi-volume deluxe edition Neapolitan antiquities to give as royal gifts. To write and direct it, he passed up a fine local scholar in favor of importing a pedantic relative of his prime minister. The scholar with local knowledge, Giacomo Martorellik proceeded to write a produce a rival set of books on the pre-history of Naples, just as fine as the the ones from the royal press, printed by the city's best printer, Paolo de Simone. Martorelli did not sign his name to it, but attributed the volumes to the noble Vargas Macciucca. The real author died while preparing a third volume, and Macciucca was helpless to finish his work. A fine example of 18th century Neapolitan book arts. . 2 volumes quarto (29 cm); [4], xliv, 356 [i.e. 456] pages, and [1] folded copper-engraved map; [8], [4], xxiv, 480, xl pages. Italic, Roman, and Greek type. Title pages printed in red and black, with engraved vignettes. Copper-engraved half-titles, vignettes, initials, and ornaments; vignette at l. A1r (p.1) signed F. La Marra; vignette at l. 3F4v (p.416) and text illustration at l. 3I4r (p.255) signed Fil. de Grado. Title page vignette signed "Josephus Aloja Necys. Sculp." Bound "alla rustica" in stiff pastepaper, titled in manuscript on spines of both volumes. Several signatures bound out-of-place but all present and both volumes are complete. Scattered light to medium foxing. Untrimmed copy with pleasing wide margins.

. 1764 - First edition. 4to., pp. [28] 192 + (facing p. 1) fold-out engraving of the four saints with panorama of Cartagena, and (facing p. 59) woodcut and letterpress family tree. A very good copy bound in contemporary vellum boards, title inked to spine, edges mottled blue (loss of vellum along bottom of upper cover). Stamp to f.f.e.p. of Real Convento de Religiosas Ursulinas, Molina de Aragon; front pastedown with MS shelfmark label. Scholarly work on the history of the city of Cartagena, it contains the lives of four early saints - three brothers and a sister, including the bishop and encyclopedist Isidore of Seville, and his sister the abbess Florentina (d.612) - and an illustrated genealogy of their family. It has some guide-book elements: there is (10-11) a description of the ?House of the Four Saints?, erected by the bishop Sancho Dàvila Toledo (1546-1625) in the episcopal palace, and the iconography of its chapel; and (12-13) of the miracle-giving statue of the Virgin Mary the Virgen del Rosell, and its placement in a chapel of the cathedral, again alongside images of the Four Saints. At end is (165-175) a novena to the Saints, and (176-184) hymns to these. A life of Florentina (80-98) describes in particular her rule of the female monastery of St. Benedict in Écija, southern Spain. A brutal story is given (98) of how later, when the Arabs came to take the city ([711]), the nuns implored their saint for help in avoiding rape. This led them to cut up their own faces; thus bloodied they met their attackers, who killed them immediately. A later reader left a place-holder at this page. A fold-out engraving of the sibling saints has at bottom a panoramic view, taken from the sea, of Cartagena, an important naval city. Details include fortifications and ships, and the print carries a dedication to the people of the Spanish royal fleet. Appropriately, the book?s dedicatee is Carlos Reggio y Gravina (1717-1773), Teniente General of the Armada. CCPB000062531-0. Palau 113943. Aguilar Piñal IV 3043. Fournier's pioneering study of typefounding and punchcutting, illustrated with engraved plates of the tools used for those processes and the most important book on French eighteenth-century typography. It is a spirited masterpiece of technical writing, intended to explain to the layman the intricacies and nuances of the typographical art. The second volume is really a type specimen book, illustrating samples of approximately one hundred ancient and modern alphabets. It is also one of the most exquisite examples of French rococo book production, making use of Fournier's own printing types and ornaments. Updike's opinion of Founrnier's work is unequivocal "The Manuel Typographique is a work which no student of French typography can afford to be without."

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Attributes: First Edition]

38.5 x 25.4 cm. French text. Vignette of a couple seated at a table, the gentleman offering the lady an open snuff box in his right hand and, presumably, a copy of this poem in his left. The text is surrounded by a flowering vine (perhaps meant to represent the Tobacco plant ?) in which are entangled several pipes.___________ The text extols the virtues of snuff as a cure for low spirits and as a general all round tonic. The poet goes on to say (loosely) that "although people accuse the French of having adopted odious habits ,the reader should realise that throughout the world Snuff satisfies many diverse tastes and if Spain and England find snuff to be such a sweet attraction, how can so many people be wrong ?" Thin strip of top edge soiled and slightly chipped , some staining and printing ink residue, two wormholes to blank margins with small loss of paper. A very good copy with all text clear and legible, printed on strong, heavy paper.______________________ I can find no other copy of this broadside in any online library. However, a search of the Catalogue Collectif de France locates a 17th century manuscript at the Bibliotheque de Bordeaux with the same first line : Non, je ne sçaurois m'y résoudre, which is possibly the source of this text. A rare survival. £275

Rara edizione originale. Cfr. Sapori, 1222..

Ruins of the Diocletian Palace at Spalatro in Dalmatia

Printed for the author, [London] 1764 - (20 7/8 x 14 3/8 inches). iv, [8], 33pp. Engraved additional title, 61 engraved plates on 53 sheets (8 double-page, 6 folding), engraved by Bartolozzi, Zucchi, Patton, Santini and others, mostly after original drawings by Charles-Louis Clérisseau. List of subscriber's. Contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt cornerpieces, spine with raised bands in eight compartments, lettered in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (expert restoration at corners and top and tail of spine) First edition of Adam's famous work on the ancient Roman architecture of Spalatro: a cornerstone of 18th-century neo-classicism. Following a six-week visit to Spalatro, Adam published this book with its elaborately engraved views of the late Roman palace, intending it to emulate the success of Robert Wood's The Ruins of Palmyra published in 1763. In Florence, Adam had met the architect Charles-Louis Clerisseau (1721-1820), who served as Adam's instructor for two years and who supervised much of the engraving for the book in Venice (51 plates) and London (11 plates). While Adam acted as leader of the expedition and contributed architectural observations (as well as gathering subscribers for publication), the preface was written by his cousin, the Scottish historian William Robertson. The engravings were based on drawings by Clerisseau (six of which are preserved in the Hermitage Museum), and were said by the Critical Review in October 1764 to possess "a taste and execution that has never been equalled in this country." Indeed, when Adam returned to Britain in 1758, "the custom's officer at Harwich had so admired the drawings that he had charged no duty" (Millard, p.5). It has been said that the publication of this work launched the Adam style. Millard II, 1; Berlin Kat. 1893; Brunet I, 46; Cicognara 3567; BAL/RIBA 27; Fowler 2; Harrison pp. 76-81. Elizabeth Moxon (fl.1740-54) is best remembered for this work,English Housewifry, which was first published in 1741. In her title and preface, Moxon communicates her intention for English Housewifry, which was meant to instruct 'Mistresses of Families, higher and lower Women Servants' in the preparation of healthy, frugal and yet 'substantial and splendid' meals, based on thirty years' experience. Moxon's own marital status and identity, however, have not been confirmed to date. 'Moxon's recipes do not particularly reflect a regional taste. However, with every edition from the second (c.1743), distributed in London as well as Leeds and other Yorkshire towns,English Housewifrywas arguably the first cookery book to travel from the provinces to the capital, rather than vice versa' (ODNB).Moxon's role in the development of the publishing trade in Leeds was perhaps even more considerable than her culinary achievements. 'TheLeeds Mercurycarried an advertisement for it in September 1740: "Ready for the Press, price bound 5s. English Housewifery by Elizabeth Moxon, Leeds. Printed by James Lister, by whom subscriptions are taken in" [ ]. Lister was the owner-publisher of the newspaper and a key figure in the expansion of publishing in Leeds. Producing a book like Moxon's, even via subscription, was a gamble. Nevertheless, even at a relatively costly 5s., the book proved highly saleable' (ODNB). A quick succession of both authorised and, from 1766 onwards, spurious editions followed. The Supplement included here was first bound and sold separately in 1758, but had been conjoined with English Housewifry in the preceding, eighth edition, which was also (like the seventh and the Supplement) published in 1758. This edition is scarce: ESTC lists only five copies; of these, the British Library and NYPL copies appear to be (respectively) parts one and two only.Bitting, p. 334 (note); ESTC T127778; Maclean, p. 105; Simon 1072; Oxford, p. 78 (note); Pennell pp. 159-160 (i mperfect).

Philip Miller became director of the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1722 and remained in office until 1770. During his directorship, Chelsea became the world's most richly stocked botanical garden. He successfully introduced exotic plants to Britain, conducted experiments on fertilization, and noticed the role of insects in pollination. His first gardener's dictionary appeared in 1724 and became the standard horticultural reference work of the 18th century, translated into a number of languages. Robert Lowth (27 November 1710 ¿ 3 November 1787) Was An Oxford Professor Of Poetry, Later Bishop Of Oxford, Bishop Of London, And Declined The Position Of Archbishop Of Canterbury Due To His Health. Lowth Seems To Have Been The First Modern Bible Scholar To Have Noticed Or Drawn Attention To The Poetic Structure Of The Psalms And Much Of The Prophetic Literature Of The Old Testament. Much Commentary On The Psalms Since Derives Either Consciously Or Implicitly, Directly Or Indirectly To Some Extent From His Lectures. Lowth Is Also Remembered For His Publication In 1762 Of A Short Introduction To English Grammar. Lowth's Dogmatic Assertions Appealed To Those Who Wished For Certainty And Authority In Their Language. Lowth's Grammar Was Not Written For Children; However, Within A Decade After It Appeared, Versions Of It Adapted For The Use Of Schools Had Appeared, And Lowth's Stylistic Opinions Acquired The Force Of Law In The Schoolroom. The Textbook Remained In Standard Usage Throughout Educational Institutions Until The Early 20Th Century. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The History of Colony of Massachusetts-Bay. Volumes I-II.

Thomas and John Fleet 1764 - Boston, 1764-1767. 8vo, contemporary calf, 566 + 539 pp. With bookplates of Gordon Abbott. Ownership markings of Jonathan Sayward Barrell, merchant in York, Maine, as well as James Lloyd of Massachusetts, who signed the front free endpaper of first volume in 1765. A quite good set with very good contents, complete. Front board of of first volume detached, rear board of first volume nearly detached, one signature clipped from margin in Volume II, lacking front free endpaper in second volume. Remains quite good, complete, with bright contents. Genealogical notes of the Lloyd family on rear endpapers of first volume. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the "tyrannical disposition" of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's "harpies." Hutchinson's History acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self-interested groups like the advocates of an inflated money supply he had battled in the 1740s. Though Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) got credit for the Albany Plan of colonial union in 1754, Hutchinson played an equally important role in drafting the document." - ANB.
