Mylne, "The Bibliographer's Last Resort : Reading the Text", 18th-c. Fiction, vol.5, n.1, oct.

Fletcher Gyles, London [but probably Paris] 1755 - The exceptionally fine La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt copy in untouched armorial binding of the earliest treatise on modern economics. Cantillon is the "founding father of modern economics" (Rothbard) and the Essai has been declared "more emphatically than any other single work, the cradle of political economy" (Jevons), and "the most systematic statement of economic principles before the Wealth of Nations" (Roll). It "is notable for its model building, its analysis of market forces and the role of the entrepreneur, its outline of the circular flow of income, and its monetary theory. Cantillon was the first real model builder in economics" (ODNB). The book was chosen among the 400 most influential books ever written in French in the 1990 exhibition at the Bibliothèque Nationale, En français dans le texte, no. 159. Provenance: A superb copy bound at the time for François-Alexandre-Frédéric, duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, with his coat of arms gilt on sides and the armorial engraved ex-libris of the Bibliothèque de Liancourt. A philanthropist, traveller, and statesman, the Duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt was one of the leading figures of the end of the 18th century. As a liberal, he participated in the French Revolution from the outset, remaining loyal to the King. He is famous for his answer to Louis XVI who had asked him on 14 July 1789 ‘Is it a revolt?’: ‘No, Your Majesty, it is a revolution’. He fled France and found refuge in England before travelling to the United States. He attempted to save the royal family. Back in France after the Revolution, he continued to promote his liberal ideas, helping the poor and creating a school. Two other copies with the coat of arms of the La Rochefoucauld family have appeared on the market in the last twenty years; they both came from the La Roche-Guyon branch of the family. This copy is the only one with the Liancourt ex-libris, stating its provenance. It is hard to imagine a better copy.Born in Ireland, Cantillon (1680-1734) was active in banking in Paris for years. A man among boys in business, he made a fortune from John Law’s scheme. "Bankers fell like autumn leaves in Paris between 1717 and 1720, and as Higgs remarks, ‘Their losses were probably very heavy in 1720 and much of them went into Cantillon’s pocket’" (New Palgrave). He successfully defended himself in numerous lawsuits brought by victims of the Mississippi Bubble, but he eventually deemed it prudent to depart for England. In 1734 he was murdered by his recently-dismissed cook, who evidently robbed him and burned his house down, destroying his manuscripts among other things. While in Paris, Cantillon had written the Essai in English and translated it into French for a friend. That friend arranged for its publication more than two decades later in 1755. Cantillon covers, in analysis far surpassing that of his contemporaries, currency, foreign exchanges, banking, credit, and the international specie flow mechanism (which Schumpeter hailed as "almost faultlessly described"). He made pioneering contributions to what was later known as the Malthusian theory of population, the theory of the allocation of surplus, and the distinction between market price and natural price as an integral part of an entire economic model. In the Essai Cantillon coined the term entrepreneur, which he observed "entails bearing the risk of buying at certain prices and selling at uncertain prices" (Cuervo). 12mo (165 x 93mm), pp. [4], [1] 2-430 [6:index], contemporary mottled calf, sides with gilt-stamped arms of the duc de Liancourt, gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco label and repeated fleurons, red edges. An exceptionally fresh and crisp copy.

Octavo, title in black and red with a vignette; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments. Rare and influential: the first edition of this major work, in which a severe concept of economic equality introduces an entirely new utopian model. Effectively the blueprint for a fully-fledged communist society, this early and extreme socialist utopia is an extension of some of the ideas first circulated in the same author's Naufrage des Isles Flottantes: Hartig called it the 'oeuvre mâitresse de la pensée utopique du XVIII siècle.' The Code de la Nature is an uncompromising text. Working from the position that Avarice is the root of all evil, Morelly argues for the absolute abolition of private property, complete state control of production and consumption, and an uncompromising and mathematical regimentation of society based on enumerations of the fundamental unit of ten.The identity of the author is a puzzle: recent research suggests that there is some doubt as to whether Morelly actually existed; if so, it is also unclear who exactly may have used the name as a pseudonym. No birth or death certificates for Morelly survive, and there is no record of anyone in the eighteenth century ever mentioning that they met him. It has been suggested that "Morelly" may actually have been either Toussaint, or even perhaps Diderot to whom the work has quite often been attributed. Whoever "Morelly" may have been, his work was better known in later centuries than in his own. The rediscovery of Morelly's "code" in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries led to his being represented as a significant forerunner of socialism. Its modern significance lies more in its effect on later political thinkers, many openly acknowledging their debt to the text: Babeuf referred to it with respect, and many nineteenth century writers admitted its influence, including Fourier, Cabet, Proudhon, Louis Blanc, Engels and Marx, who quoted Morelly on the dangers of private ownership. Sculptura; or, the history and art of chalcography, and engraving in copper: with an ample enumeration of the most renowned masters and their works. To which is annexed, a new manner of engraving, or mezzotinto, communicated by His Highness Prince Rupert to the author of this treatise, John Evelyn, Esq

Second Edition London Printed for J. Payne, at Pope's Head in Pater noster-row, M.DCC.LV [1755] Small 8vo; [4], xxxvi,140pp, including a life of Evelyn; four pages of corrections, additions, errata and directions to the binder, and "An account of Signor Giacomo Favi" by Samuel de Sorbière, with two copper-engraved plates (one, the frontispiece portrait of Evelyn) and a magnificent folding mezzotint. Bound in full contemporary calf, boards ruled in gilt, spine divided into six compartments by aised bands edged in gilt, red leather lettering piece gilt chipped on one corner. An excellent, unsophisticated copy, internally bright and fresh, save for offsetting to the first and final few leaves. Keynes 34. Bland, History of Book Illustration, p. 191. ESTC Citation No. T113409. Near Fine The first book on the appreciation of prints rather than a technical manual for producing them. In this small work on engraving and etching, first published in 1662 (see Wither to Prior 344), Evelyn also announced a new printmaking process, the mezzotint, "Invented, and communicated by his Highnesse Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of Rhyne, &c.'." (The sumptuous mezzotint in this edition is an "exact copy"?though reduced by a tenth?of a detail from Rupert's largest and most famous work, "The Great Executioner," considered one of the genre's finest examples. According to Keynes, referring to the first edition, this "print has been the prey of collectors of mezzotints and is missing from many copies of the book. When present, it enhances the price of the volume quite out of proportion to its rarity or intrinsic value." In this second edition, the mezzotint is Richard Houston's copy, which Keynes pronounces "good," and which is often surreptitiously inserted in the first edition in place of Prince Rupert's original.) From Evelyn's diary and papers, now in the British Library, we know the precise date when Rupert showed the technique to Evelyn: February 24, 1661. However, Rupert and Evelyn conspired to keep details of the process secret, lest it be "prostituted" at too cheap a rate.

He is famous for his answer to Louis XVI who had asked him on 14 July 1789 'Is it a revolt?': 'No, Your Majesty, it is a revolution'. It is hard to imagine a better copy. Born in Ireland, Cantillon (1680-1734) was active in banking in Paris for years. A man among boys in business, he made a fortune from John Law's scheme. "Bankers fell like autumn leaves in Paris between 1717 and 1720, and as Higgs remarks, 'Their losses were probably very heavy in 1720 and much of them went into Cantillon's pocket'" (New Palgrave).

EARTHQUAKES Ð PORTUGAL Ð GREAT LISBON EARTHQUAKE OF 1755. ANGESTELLTE BETRACHTUNG †BER DIE DEN I. NOVEMBER 1755. SO AUSSERORDENTLICHE ERDBEBEN UND MEERESBEWEGUNGEN, WODURCH DIE GRUNDFESTE EINES GROSSEN THEILS EUROPENS UND AFRICA ERSCH†TTERT. IN VIER ABH.

      - This fascinating pamphlet is an important contemporary source on the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, written less than two months after the catastrophe suddenly destroyed one of the worldÕs great cities and devastated an entire region. Compiled by the respected Augsburg newspaper publisher Johann Andreas Maschenbauer, this entertaining work features ÔSpecial ReportsÕ from eyewitnesses to the event and its aftermath, the latest of which was written less than two weeks before the pamphlet was printed. Attractively, the work features nine maps and views of places in the affected region by the prominent engraver George Christoph Kilian. MaschenbuaerÕs pamphlet was imbued with great authority all across Central Europe, not only for its coverage of the events in southwestern Iberia, but on the subject of earthquakes in general, and is still referenced by writers today. The pamphlet is rare in its complete form, as presented here, with all nine of the called-for maps and views. The Great Lisbon Earthquake of November 1, 1755 was one of the most consequential natural disasters in modern history and a key historical event of 18th Century Europe. At 9:40 AM on the All SaintsÕ Day holiday, the earthquake struck with awesome force, estimated to be between 8.5 and 9.0 on the Richter Scale. Intense shaking lasted between 3.5 and 6 minutes and fissures opened in the ground that were as much as 15 feet wide. Large masonry buildings, some centuries old, collapsed and innumerable fires broke out. As many of LisbonÕs stunned residents sought safety in the open spaces of the waterfront, they witnessed the horrifying spectacle of LisbonÕs great harbour being completely emptied of water. This was the prelude to a maremoto (tsunami) that within 40 minutes of the quake would race into to harbour and up the Tagus River, destroying everything in its path. This immense wall of water travelled with such velocity up the Tagus Òthat several people riding on horseback . were forced to gallop as fast as possible to the upper grounds for fear of being carried away.Ó By the time the dust settled, as many as 100,000 people were killed and LisbonÕs city centre was almost completely destroyed, with the ruins in flames. Tragically for posterity, virtually all of PortugalÕsÕ archives and artifacts from the Great Age of Exploration, in the 15th and 16th Centuries, was lost. The Portuguese government was crippled and it would be many years before it recovered normal functionality, while the nationÕs role as world power was permanently brought to an end. Many other places in Southern Portugal and Southwestern Spain experienced serious damage, but none as severe as Lisbon. The earthquake had ramifications far beyond Iberia. While disasters had struck major European cities before (such as the Great Fire of London of 1666) and important colonial centres had been destroyed by earthquakes (such as Port Royal, Jamaica in 1692 and Lima, Peru in 1748), this was a shock to European consciousness on an entirely new level. People all across the Western world were stunned that Lisbon, one of EuropeÕs greatest cities and imperial capitals, could be completely wiped out within the span of an hour. Religious scholars reflected on ÒGodÕs JudgmentÓ upon Portugal and philosophers such as Voltaire and Immanuel Kant tried to find a rationale for such a tragedy. In the contemporary context of Enlightenment science, the Lisbon Earthquake led to the genesis of the formal study of seismology, as well as new engineering standards. As noted by Maschenbauer, the present account was prepared on December 26, 1755, less than two months after the Lisbon Earthquake. The work is divided into four parts, plus an appendix. Following a brief introduction, the first section outlines various theories regarding the causation of earthquakes. The second section describes major historical earthquakes from antiquity to modern times. The third section features ÔSpecial NachrichtenÕ (Special Reports), that had

Veduta del Sepolcro di Caio Cestio

1755. - PRIMO STATO DI SEI - Acquaforte e bulino, 1755 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. - THE FIRST STATE OF SIX - Etching and engraving, 175, signed on plate at the lower right. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary strong laid paper without watermark, with margins, very good condition. The first state of six, before the retouches of the plate and the address of Bouchard and Gravier. Very rare. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Hind 35 I/VI; Focillon 810. 540 405

London [= the Netherlands, probably Amsterdam], 1780. With (2). CLOOTS, Anacharsis. C. d. V. d. G.Berlin, 1783. 2 works in 1 volume. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine.

Ad 1: ESTC T86984; Martin-Waller 7753 E; STCN 306067978. Ad 1: First edition of the first of the revolutionary works of Anacharsis Cloots (1755-1794), a German utopist from Berlin. It is written in defence of Holbach, against the violent attack of Abbé Bergier. It is a parody on the latter's La Certitude des preuves du Christianisme, which was in itself a reply to Fréret's Examen critique des apologistes de la religion chrétienne. Cloots showes that the arguments used by Bergier to prove that Christianity was the true religion, could also be used to prove that Islam was the true religion.Ad 2: First edition of a "Letter on the Jews", which is often found added at the end of La Certitude des preuves..., because in essence it contains the same arguments in disclaiming any "raison d'être" for the Jewish religion as the author presented in La Certitude for both the Mohammedan and Christian religions.Binding very slightly rubbed along the extremities. Otherwise in very good condition, with only a few small spots and a small maginal water stain on first few leaves.

Giovanni Antonio Battarra (1714-89) was a priest, botanist and mycologist from Coriano in Rimini, Italy. In this rare work, with "forty excellent, but uncoloured plates" (Ainsworth p. 56) drawn and engraved by Battarra himself, he presents 248 species of fungi from Rimini. The title vignette depicts a lynx (an allusion to the Accademia dei lincei) in a forest with mushrooms, and carries the Greek motto "We study mushrooms, we do not eat them". The Dutch mycologist Hendrik Sijbert Cornelis Huijsman (1900-86) was an ophthalmologist by profession but thanks to his great interest in mycology he became a leading agaricologist in the Netherlands.
