        Ad Capponianas Ruthenas tabulas commentarius

Rome: Giovanni Generoso Salomoni [for the author], 1755. 4to (310 x 216 mm). [40], 136 pp. Title in red and black with engraved vignette of the arms of the dedicatee Cardinal Millo held aloft by two cherubs, text in two columns, 5 engraved plates on thicker paper, two historiated initials, one engraved, signed by Gravignani, woodcut tailpiece. Light foxing to title and a few leaves, a few sheets discolored. contemporary roman presentation binding of gold-tooled red goatskin, covers with roll-tooled rocaille & dogs-tooth borders and floral and foliate dentelle frame, at center the arms of Cardinal Millo, spine gold-tooled and -lettered, pink pastepaper endpapers, gilt edges (scrapes to front cover, scuffing to corners, a few wormholes to upper cover and spine); felt-lined morocco folding case. Provenance: Giovanni Giacomo Millo (1695-1757), Cardinal of Crisogono, supra-libros; Maurice Burrus, bookplate (purchased from the Paris bookseller Arthur Lauria in 1935, as noted by Burrus on small label at end with coded price label). *** Only edition, the dedication copy, of a privately printed study of a Greek cross-shaped Russian wooden icon, finely painted with a visual calendar of Orthodox saints based on manuscript menologia, bequeathed to the Vatican Library, along with his vast library, by the Marquis Alessandro Gregorio Capponi (1683-1746). Cameriere segreto of the Pope, voracious collector of mainly Italian literature, art and antiquities, Capponi was the first to conceive of a Capitoline Museum, and its first director. Exhibited today with other Russian and Byzantine icons in Room XVIII of the Vatican Pinacoteca, this icon is described by Falconi (Archbishop of San Severino) as dating from the beginnings of the Russian Orthodox church, i.e., the 12th century, but was later easily identified as seventeenth-century. As described in the Vatican hand-outs for visitors (available on the Pinacoteca website), "this 'calendar of sainthood' presents, round the central nucleus with Christ in Glory, the feast-days of the Saints, as established in the Orthodox calendar, which begins on the first of September. Called menologion, meaning annual calendar ... these icons derived their iconography from the miniatures that illustrated the texts containing the first collections of lives of the saints. They·were displayed in churches on a special lectern called analogion." The icon comprises five panels: four equal-sized arms of the cross and a central painting. As meticulously reproduced in the engravings in this volume, the four arms each contain three columns, one for each month, starting with September, the first month of the Orthodox year; each column contains six vertically arrayed scenes depicting groups of the Saints, identified in Church Slavonic, with scenes from their lives. The central panel, in a different format containing 26 small compartments with scenes from the Passion, and one large central compartment showing the Resurrection, represents the moveable feasts, from the ninth Sunday before Easter (Septuagesima) to the first Sunday after Easter (the Orthodox All Saints Day). Three of the panels bear the artists' signatures. In the Prolegomena, Falconi provides notes on the icon's provenance, to the effect that it was intended by a Greek priest as a gift to Peter the Great, and was bought in the Roman antiquities market by Capponi (whose guiding light was the famous scholar-dealer Francesco Ficoroni). A history of the introduction of Christianity into Russia and an account of the Slavonic liturgy introduce the body of the work, clearly a labor of love, containing hagiographies of every Saint shown in the icon, translations of the texts into Latin, and extensive commentary. In 1834, the authors of a German guidebook to Rome, citing the historian Alexander Turgenev, mocked Falconi's attributions of the piece as "clearly unfounded," stating that the names of the artists who signed three of the panels were Russian, not Greek, and that the style of the lettering showed a date not earlier than that of the reign of Peter the Great's father Tsar Alexis I (Ernst Platner, et al., Beschreibung der Stadt Rom, Stuttgart 1834, vol. 2,325-6). OCLC locates 3 copies in US libraries (UC Berkeley, Baylor Univ., and Catholic Univ. of America). On Capponi, cf. DBI 19:10-13.

¶ Vicaire 171 - Bitting p.376 - Caillet 8822 - Mueller 169 - Ferguson I.154 - Duveen p.480.

Advantage of Taking the Mean in Practical Astronomy

1755. First Edition . SIMPSON, T(homas). A Letter to the Right Honourable George, Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society, as to the Advantage of Taking the Mean of a Number of Observations in Practical Astronomy. FROM (generaly title page present): Philosophical Transactions, Volume 49, pp. 82-93. London: L. Davis and C. Reymers, Printers to the Royal Society, 1756. Octavo, modern marbled boards. $1850.First edition of SimpsonÂ’s mathematical proof that the average of a number of observations is nearer to the truth than any single observation, the first demonstration of this fundamental scientific concept.Simpson was the first to characterize the errors in observations as independent events, taking positive and negative values with equal probability, and the first to provide an exact expression for the probability that the error in the mean result will lie between assigned limits (Todhunter, 309). This paper was later reprinted (revised) in SimpsonÂ’s Miscellaneous Tracts (1757) and is considered a milestone in statistical inference, a forerunner of Legendre-GaussÂ’ Least Squares, and “the earliest statistical advice from a mathematician to experimental scientist” (Stigler, 93). “A conceptual shift which would have radical consequences for scientific practice” (Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, 1379). Tiny hole in title page, just affecting imprint. Text clean. A near-fine copy.

1755 - [8]-560-[2] pp., 26 pl. "These illustrations that rank among the best natural history engravings of the 18th century show minerals, stones, fossils, coral, birds and fish." With signature of colonial physician Cotton Tufts.“Here in Massachusetts the civil law laid its hand upon the citizen in his business and social relations; it regulated his religious affairs, it dictated his dress, and even invaded the home circle and directed his family relations. The length and width of a ladyÂ’s sleeve was solemnly decided by law. It was a penal offense for a man to wear long hair, or to smoke in the street, or for a youth to court a maid without the consent of her parents. A man was not permitted to kiss his wife in public. Captain Kimble, returning from a three-yearsÂ’ ocean voyage, kissed his wife on his own doorstep and spent two hours in the stocks for his ‘lewed and unseemly behavior” (Henry William Elson). This collection of laws from 1736 to 1755 provides fascinating insights into colonial America, regarding the punishment of criminals (the penalty for counterfeiting, for example, was the loss of one ear, mock hanging, and 20 lashes), provision for the poor (children who could not be “maintained” by their parents could be apprenticed), property damage (beaches were to be protected from becoming “damnified by cattle”), preservation of timber (“young wood”) and wild-life (especially deer, fish and fowl), public health (the fine for concealing cases of small pox was £100), and rules for inn-keepers (Indians, slaves and servants were not to be served “strong drink”). Tower 401. Evans 7467. Harvard Law Catalogue II, 75. Contemporary signatures, including those of Weymouth Congregationalist minister, Reverend William Smith (father of Abigail Smith Adams, the second first-lady) and colonial physician Cotton Tufts, also of Weymouth, an original member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, one of the founders of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, author of the first article on animal diseases published in the United States, and active member of the State Senate and Constitutional Convention.Light scattered foxing. Attractive binding fine. An excellent copy with distinguished provenance.

Brunet, II, 522. Tall folio (11 by 17 inches), contemporary full tan polished calf rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, green morocco spine label, raised bands. $1800.Second edition of this richly illustrated catalogue of classical mythology in Roman art and literature, an impressive tall folio with engraved frontispiece portrait by George Vertue after Isaac Whood, 17 vignette tailpieces, and 41 full-page engraved plates (four double-page, two of these folding) by Boitard after Paderni and others. Very handsomely bound in full contemporary polished calf-gilt.Many years in the making, this large and finely printed volume traces classical mythology in Roman art and literature. “Remains an agreeable book, owing to the urbanity of its old-fashioned scholarship, the justice of some incidental observations, and its affluent stores of quotation; and, as an intellectual if heterogeneous banquet, may be compared with the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus. Gibbon speaks of its ‘taste and learning” (DNB). Samuel Johnson wrote of Spence: “His criticism was commonly just; what he thought, he thought rightly, and his remarks were recommended by coolness and candor” (DNB). “A highly regarded work” (Brunet). First published in 1747. Lowndes, 2474. Armorial bookplate.Interior clean. A handsome copy, desirable in contemporary calf-gilt.

- Folio. With the title-page printed in red and black and with a woodcut device. Text in Arabic with parallel Latin translation. 19th-century boards covered with brown pastepaper. Reissue of the first edition of the standard biography of Saladin (1138-1193), the first Ayyubid sultan of Egypt and Syria, written by his secretary, Baha' al-Din ibn Shaddad (1145-1234). Saladin (or more properly, Salah al-Din) is renowned in the East as the great Mohammedan ruler who united the lands of Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Mesopotamia into a single Muslim empire. In 1187 he launched a "jihad" against the Christian invaders of the Holy Land and captured Jerusalem, showing clemency to the Christian inhabitants. He went on to drive the crusaders from every fortification in the land, except Acre, which he besieged unsuccessfully for two years. This volume also contains selections from the universal history of Abu al-Fida, a descendant of Saladin, who took part in the campaigns against the crusaders and later became sultan (1320). His history covers the period from creation to 1329. The editor and translator Albert Schultens (1686-1750) was a Dutch Orientalist, and regarded as the chief Arabist of his time. - Title-page browned, some minor foxing and some damp stains, mostly marginal, otherwise in good condition.

Sechste Auflage.
