Brunet, II, 522.       1755. SPENCE, Joseph. Polymetis: or, an Enquiry Concerning the Agreement between the Works of the Roman Poets, and the Remains of the Antient Artists. London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1755. Tall folio (11 by 17 inches), contemporary full tan polished calf rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, green morocco spine label, raised bands. $1800.Second edition of this richly illustrated catalogue of classical mythology in Roman art and literature, an impressive tall folio with engraved frontispiece portrait by George Vertue after Isaac Whood, 17 vignette tailpieces, and 41 full-page engraved plates (four double-page, two of these folding) by Boitard after Paderni and others. Very handsomely bound in full contemporary polished calf-gilt.Many years in the making, this large and finely printed volume traces classical mythology in Roman art and literature. “Remains an agreeable book, owing to the urbanity of its old-fashioned scholarship, the justice of some incidental observations, and its affluent stores of quotation; and, as an intellectual if heterogeneous banquet, may be compared with the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus. Gibbon speaks of its ‘taste and learning” (DNB). Samuel Johnson wrote of Spence: “His criticism was commonly just; what he thought, he thought rightly, and his remarks were recommended by coolness and candor” (DNB). “A highly regarded work” (Brunet). First published in 1747. Lowndes, 2474. Armorial bookplate.Interior clean. A handsome copy, desirable in contemporary calf-gilt.

- Folio. With the title-page printed in red and black and with a woodcut device. Text in Arabic with parallel Latin translation. 19th-century boards covered with brown pastepaper. Reissue of the first edition of the standard biography of Saladin (1138-1193), the first Ayyubid sultan of Egypt and Syria, written by his secretary, Baha' al-Din ibn Shaddad (1145-1234). Saladin (or more properly, Salah al-Din) is renowned in the East as the great Mohammedan ruler who united the lands of Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Mesopotamia into a single Muslim empire. In 1187 he launched a "jihad" against the Christian invaders of the Holy Land and captured Jerusalem, showing clemency to the Christian inhabitants. He went on to drive the crusaders from every fortification in the land, except Acre, which he besieged unsuccessfully for two years. This volume also contains selections from the universal history of Abu al-Fida, a descendant of Saladin, who took part in the campaigns against the crusaders and later became sultan (1320). His history covers the period from creation to 1329. The editor and translator Albert Schultens (1686-1750) was a Dutch Orientalist, and regarded as the chief Arabist of his time. - Title-page browned, some minor foxing and some damp stains, mostly marginal, otherwise in good condition.

Mylne, "The Bibliographer's Last Resort : Reading the Text", 18th-c. Fiction, vol.5, n.1, oct.

Fletcher Gyles, London [but probably Paris] 1755 - The exceptionally fine La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt copy in untouched armorial binding of the earliest treatise on modern economics. Cantillon is the "founding father of modern economics" (Rothbard) and the Essai has been declared "more emphatically than any other single work, the cradle of political economy" (Jevons), and "the most systematic statement of economic principles before the Wealth of Nations" (Roll). It "is notable for its model building, its analysis of market forces and the role of the entrepreneur, its outline of the circular flow of income, and its monetary theory. Cantillon was the first real model builder in economics" (ODNB). The book was chosen among the 400 most influential books ever written in French in the 1990 exhibition at the Bibliothèque Nationale, En français dans le texte, no. 159. Provenance: A superb copy bound at the time for François-Alexandre-Frédéric, duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, with his coat of arms gilt on sides and the armorial engraved ex-libris of the Bibliothèque de Liancourt. A philanthropist, traveller, and statesman, the Duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt was one of the leading figures of the end of the 18th century. As a liberal, he participated in the French Revolution from the outset, remaining loyal to the King. He is famous for his answer to Louis XVI who had asked him on 14 July 1789 ‘Is it a revolt?’: ‘No, Your Majesty, it is a revolution’. He fled France and found refuge in England before travelling to the United States. He attempted to save the royal family. Back in France after the Revolution, he continued to promote his liberal ideas, helping the poor and creating a school. Two other copies with the coat of arms of the La Rochefoucauld family have appeared on the market in the last twenty years; they both came from the La Roche-Guyon branch of the family. This copy is the only one with the Liancourt ex-libris, stating its provenance. It is hard to imagine a better copy.Born in Ireland, Cantillon (1680-1734) was active in banking in Paris for years. A man among boys in business, he made a fortune from John Law’s scheme. "Bankers fell like autumn leaves in Paris between 1717 and 1720, and as Higgs remarks, ‘Their losses were probably very heavy in 1720 and much of them went into Cantillon’s pocket’" (New Palgrave). He successfully defended himself in numerous lawsuits brought by victims of the Mississippi Bubble, but he eventually deemed it prudent to depart for England. In 1734 he was murdered by his recently-dismissed cook, who evidently robbed him and burned his house down, destroying his manuscripts among other things. While in Paris, Cantillon had written the Essai in English and translated it into French for a friend. That friend arranged for its publication more than two decades later in 1755. Cantillon covers, in analysis far surpassing that of his contemporaries, currency, foreign exchanges, banking, credit, and the international specie flow mechanism (which Schumpeter hailed as "almost faultlessly described"). He made pioneering contributions to what was later known as the Malthusian theory of population, the theory of the allocation of surplus, and the distinction between market price and natural price as an integral part of an entire economic model. In the Essai Cantillon coined the term entrepreneur, which he observed "entails bearing the risk of buying at certain prices and selling at uncertain prices" (Cuervo). 12mo (165 x 93mm), pp. [4], [1] 2-430 [6:index], contemporary mottled calf, sides with gilt-stamped arms of the duc de Liancourt, gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco label and repeated fleurons, red edges. An exceptionally fresh and crisp copy.

Octavo, title in black and red with a vignette; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments. Rare and influential: the first edition of this major work, in which a severe concept of economic equality introduces an entirely new utopian model. Effectively the blueprint for a fully-fledged communist society, this early and extreme socialist utopia is an extension of some of the ideas first circulated in the same author's Naufrage des Isles Flottantes: Hartig called it the 'oeuvre mâitresse de la pensée utopique du XVIII siècle.' The Code de la Nature is an uncompromising text. Working from the position that Avarice is the root of all evil, Morelly argues for the absolute abolition of private property, complete state control of production and consumption, and an uncompromising and mathematical regimentation of society based on enumerations of the fundamental unit of ten.The identity of the author is a puzzle: recent research suggests that there is some doubt as to whether Morelly actually existed; if so, it is also unclear who exactly may have used the name as a pseudonym. No birth or death certificates for Morelly survive, and there is no record of anyone in the eighteenth century ever mentioning that they met him. It has been suggested that "Morelly" may actually have been either Toussaint, or even perhaps Diderot to whom the work has quite often been attributed. Whoever "Morelly" may have been, his work was better known in later centuries than in his own. The rediscovery of Morelly's "code" in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries led to his being represented as a significant forerunner of socialism. Its modern significance lies more in its effect on later political thinkers, many openly acknowledging their debt to the text: Babeuf referred to it with respect, and many nineteenth century writers admitted its influence, including Fourier, Cabet, Proudhon, Louis Blanc, Engels and Marx, who quoted Morelly on the dangers of private ownership. Sculptura; or, the history and art of chalcography, and engraving in copper: with an ample enumeration of the most renowned masters and their works. To which is annexed, a new manner of engraving, or mezzotinto, communicated by His Highness Prince Rupert to the author of this treatise, John Evelyn, Esq

Second Edition London Printed for J. Payne, at Pope's Head in Pater noster-row, M.DCC.LV [1755] Small 8vo; [4], xxxvi,140pp, including a life of Evelyn; four pages of corrections, additions, errata and directions to the binder, and "An account of Signor Giacomo Favi" by Samuel de Sorbière, with two copper-engraved plates (one, the frontispiece portrait of Evelyn) and a magnificent folding mezzotint. Bound in full contemporary calf, boards ruled in gilt, spine divided into six compartments by aised bands edged in gilt, red leather lettering piece gilt chipped on one corner. An excellent, unsophisticated copy, internally bright and fresh, save for offsetting to the first and final few leaves. Keynes 34. Bland, History of Book Illustration, p. 191. ESTC Citation No. T113409. Near Fine The first book on the appreciation of prints rather than a technical manual for producing them. In this small work on engraving and etching, first published in 1662 (see Wither to Prior 344), Evelyn also announced a new printmaking process, the mezzotint, "Invented, and communicated by his Highnesse Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of Rhyne, &c.'." (The sumptuous mezzotint in this edition is an "exact copy"?though reduced by a tenth?of a detail from Rupert's largest and most famous work, "The Great Executioner," considered one of the genre's finest examples. According to Keynes, referring to the first edition, this "print has been the prey of collectors of mezzotints and is missing from many copies of the book. When present, it enhances the price of the volume quite out of proportion to its rarity or intrinsic value." In this second edition, the mezzotint is Richard Houston's copy, which Keynes pronounces "good," and which is often surreptitiously inserted in the first edition in place of Prince Rupert's original.) From Evelyn's diary and papers, now in the British Library, we know the precise date when Rupert showed the technique to Evelyn: February 24, 1661. However, Rupert and Evelyn conspired to keep details of the process secret, lest it be "prostituted" at too cheap a rate.

He is famous for his answer to Louis XVI who had asked him on 14 July 1789 'Is it a revolt?': 'No, Your Majesty, it is a revolution'. It is hard to imagine a better copy. Born in Ireland, Cantillon (1680-1734) was active in banking in Paris for years. A man among boys in business, he made a fortune from John Law's scheme. "Bankers fell like autumn leaves in Paris between 1717 and 1720, and as Higgs remarks, 'Their losses were probably very heavy in 1720 and much of them went into Cantillon's pocket'" (New Palgrave).
