A True State of the Case of Bosavern Penlez, Who Suffered on Account of the Late Riot in the Strand. In Which the Law Regarding These Offences, and the Statute of George the First, Commonly Called the Riot Act, are Fully Considered

London: A. Millar, 1749. First edition. [ii], 54 pp. 8vo. Modern quarter calf, cloth boards, uncut. Title creased and soiled, with two small closed tears, affecting one letter, some creasing and soiling to margins, paper flaw at top margin of B1, last leaf soiled and rubbed, affecting text. First edition. [ii], 54 pp. 8vo. First edition of Fielding's defense of the government's controversial decision to hang the young wig maker Bosavern Penlez after his involvement in riots at several London bawdy houses. Fielding, as chief magistrate, was responsible for quelling the riots, and it was his disclosure that Penlez had stolen linens from a brothel (a crime for which he was not convicted) that precluded a pardon and sealed the young man's fate. There are two 1749 printings, with the second printing not so designated on the title-page. The first printing is identifiable by the press marks 2-4, 16-1, 22-3, 32-4, 39-2 & 44-1 and the readings "Pulton" on p. 5 l. 22 and "Examples" on p. 12 l. 1. In the second printing, signature B and pages C3r, C4r-v, E1v, and E4r were reset, the remainder being printed from standing type. Cross III, pp. 319-20; Rothschild 852. Provenance: Blackwell's (pencil note); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate)

One title-page cut close otherwise a nice clean and well-preserved copy with wide margin. Small stamps on title-pages. * A rare complete set of the most important and finest entomological German publication of the 18th century. The work was published by Rösel and his son-in-law Kleemann, both lived in Bavaria, in Nürnberg, working as artists, and both were ardent students of local natural history. "Rösel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleemann tells us. Rösel also made the engravings of his drawings and, until his death in 1757, his 'loving and diligent spouse' contributed fine colouring to the prints" [Nissen. Bestiaries]. The handcoloured engraved frontispieces are of a great beauty and the plates, especially of his favourite group, butterflies and moths, usually show a complete life history, with eggs, larva, pupa and perfect insect. There was no title page published for the first issue of the supplement by Kleemann; a second issue of the supplement was published in 1792 which does have a printed title as well as 4 more plates. [Beiträge zur Natur- und Insectengeschichte], together with a second volume with 20 plates.Nissen ZBI, 3466 & 2201. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Graffi sulle stoviglie. Strofinato indietro. 2 angoli urtato. Bellissimo esemplare, punta molto frais.

London: Printed & sold by Tho: Bowles Print & Map Seller in St. Pauls Church-Yard. 1749 - London: Thomas Bowles, 1749. (8 x 6 inches). 4 leaves of tables. Engraved title-page and 273 engraved road maps after Emanuel Bowen. Recent calf gilt (a bit rubbed). Fourth edition, first published in 1720 in its current format, but a reduced version of Ogilby's "Britannia" first published in London in 1675. "Ogilby secured the. title of His Majesty's Cosmographer early in 1671 [and] drew upon the support of the King and other patrons in the production and publication of Britannia, the work for which he became best known. Chiefly a road atlas, it was securely based on contemporary and collaborative research. Ogilby drew out 2519 miles of road in the form of 100 strip maps, a technique that was widely imitated throughout the following century. Measuring distances by waywiser (his "great wheel"), he made allowance for roads that ascended hills yet had to be depicted in two dimensions on paper, and his surveys helped to standardize the mile at 1760 yards throughout the kingdom. Britannia marked the first major advance in cartography in England since the Tudor period, though it did echo earlier traditions. It was republished in 1698, 1719, and 1720, and on subsequent occasions up to modern times" (DNB). This is one of Emanuel Bowen's earlier works, and his contribution to eighteenth-century world and British atlases would be substantial.   Condition Report Externally Spine – very good condition.          L.A.S. de Buffon à La Condamine

[Paris]. Sturdy, Science and Social Status.

There were 29 maps in the atlas, and they included detailed battle maps drawn by eyewitnesses.

Arte magica dileguata.

Scipione Maffei (forme varianti: Pindemonte, Desiderato e Brenteatico, Orillo)(1675-1755), erudito, letterato, in Arcadia come poeta, nato e morto a Verona.          Pair of Anatomical studies]

      H. Woodfall for John and Paul Knapton London 1749 - A pair of copper plate engravings. Framed and glazed, overall size: 112.4 by 83.5cm. Albinus' work, based upon his concept of the ideal man, is among the most artistically perfect of anatomical atlases. "Albinus and his artist, Jan Wandelaar, used some ingenious methods to prepare the illustrations, including the establishment of an optically ideal point of view (one at which all the bones of the skeleton are seen at right angles), dividing the human figure into sections using a mathematically constructed grid, and transferring each section onto paper in true size with the aid of compass and ruler. In addition, Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect.

LAS de Buffon à La Condamine

[Paris].

; (2) 396pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition after the original of 1748 in Geneva of a rarity badge; there will be a second edition corrected in 1748 by the same publisher, also very rare; the one we present is the third edition in 4 according to Tchemerzine, it is rare, especially in very good condition. It contains the two errata and changes made by the author on the first edition. Some sources present this edition as Lyonnaise. Binding in full marbled basane of time. Back with ornate nerves. Title piece in red morocco. Epidermures on the boards. Back rubbed. 2 blunt corners. The emblematic and lighthouse book of the eighteenth century, The spirit of laws, that is, the principles and tendencies by which laws are made, will have a decisive influence on political life, and will be a guide for the drafting of the Constitution of 1791 and that of the United States. The general thesis of Montesquieu (1689-1755) is that laws are not only a creation of men. The spirit of laws is "the various relations of laws with various things" the forms are multiple; there are therefore physical causes (the climate), moral causes (religion, morals .); moreover a primitive justice is at the origin of the laws; There is, then, a spirit of laws. But the book is not only a treatise of the spirit which animates the laws, it is above all a treatise of governments, and above all, of liberty. Although the book was widely read, it was received with a certain coldness (by the philosophers, who did not recognize in Montesquieu one of their own and reproached him for his conservatism) and much criticism (on the part of the ecclesiastics). viij (16) 369pp. ; (2) 396pp. (14) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

3 p.l., xviii, 374 pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spine. Paris: P. Prault, 1749. Gluc de Saint-Port, a member of a family whose thread-dyeing enterprise was closely allied to the royal Gobelins factory, was for some years the lover of the great woman book collector Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, Comtesse de Verruë (1670-1736). She presented Gluc with a number of art objects and he was a considerable art collector on his own account. This library is notable for its holdings of books about art and literature and for incorporating the library of Bernard de La Monnoye (1641-1728), the French lawyer, poet, philologist, and critic, best known for his carols Noel borguignon, written in the patois of Burgundy. He formed an important library of literature and many of the books were filled with his erudite annotations. Upon going bankrupt, he was obliged to sell his library to Gluc. La Vallière was a major buyer at the Gluc sale. Fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. 3473 lots. This catalogue is most uncommon; it is the first time I have handled a copy. Bookplate of the great Paris bookseller, Georges Heilbrun. The BnF copy has a ten-page "Supplement," not present here; it is very rare. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 86. Guigard, II, pp. 236-37. Peignot, p. 122.
