THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING

Printed for A. Millar, London 1749 - Six volumes. lxii,[2(errata)],214,[blank]; [2],324; [2],370,[blank]; [2],312; [2],294; [2],304pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked to style, raised bands, gilt labels. Engraved armorial bookplate in each volume ("E Cura Quies" signed AB), offset to margins of prelims and endleaves from binding, small red ink smudge on title of volume 6, otherwise a very good set. First edition of Fielding's masterpiece, and one of the key 18th century novels. The first edition consisted of 2000 copies, and these were virtually all spoken for prior to the formal day of publication. The copies of the first edition are distinguished, as here, by the presence of the page of errata following the table of contents in the first volume. The errata were corrected and the page taken over by the enlargement of the contents in the unmarked second edition of 1500 copies, which was ordered after the first edition was exhausted. Both editions were in circulation on the formal publication day of 28 February. This set exhibits the usual cancels as noted in Rothschild, and B5 in volume VI is unsigned. CROSS III:317. ROTHSCHILD 850-1. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 48. NCBEL II:930. ESTC T1947.

Arte magica dileguata. Lettera del Signor Marchese Maffei al Padre Innocente Ansaldi dell'Ordine de' Predicatori.

Agostino Carattoni. Scipione Maffei (forme varianti: Pindemonte, Desiderato e Brenteatico, Orillo)(1675-1755), erudito, letterato, in Arcadia come poeta, nato e morto a Verona. Prov.: Indicazione d'appartenenza su etichetta incollata in basso a sinistra al contropiatto ant. (Libreria Antiquaria Mediolanum). Rif.: IT\ICCU\NAPE\013822. OCLC, 231070317. Cond.: Opera completa, in perfette condizioni generali. -- ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS WORK WHICH INAUGURATES A TRIAD OF TEXTS DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR TO MAGIC AND WITCHCRAFT TOPICS. Francis Scipio Maffei (1675-1755), the playwright of Merope and La Ceremonia , was a man of letters well loved by his fellow Veronese. He was known for his travels to England and around the European continent in search of antique medals, intaglios, and cameos and his lavish yet inexpensive parties. This essay is one of those engendered by the controversy about Tartarotti's De Congresso Notturno della Lammie. Tartarotti, an Italian neo-platonist, published a history of witch-beliefs from antiquity to the present (1749). Tartarotti found a survival of the Diana cult in the witches and criticized Del Rio and other witchcraft authors. For Maffei, Tartarotti did not go far enough in attacking the rationality of the witchcraft belief. Maffei's three contributions to the witchcraft controversy were the Arte magica dileguata (1749), Arte magica distrutta (1750) and the Arte magica annichilata (1754). Complete copy, in perfect condition.

        De l'esprit des loix

Barillot, & fils [Durand]| 1749 - - Barillot, & fils [Durand], A Genève [Paris] s.d. (1749), in-4 (19x25cm), (8) XXIV, 522pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Second edition in the order of publications. Parisian counterfeit published in January 1749 (it would have been printed by Prault), The original, a rarity badge, dating, she, October 1748. This counterfeit is distinguished by a few points: it reproduces the same mistakes pagination in the preface only in the first edition. The address has only one R in Barillot. There must be a sheet of errata at the end of Volume I, a detail that attests to the first issue of this second edition. Although rare, this counterfeit is much more easily than the first edition of 1748 which was mainly sold in England. Binders of the time in full brown sheepskin, back with five nerves adorned with boxes and gilded florets, pieces of red morocco title, triple cold nets framing boards, golden wheels on the cuts, all red slices. Three headdresses and several cleverly restored corners. Iconic book and lighthouse of the eighteenth century, The spirit of laws, ie the principles and trends by which laws are made, will have a determining influence on political life, and will be a guide for the drafting of the constitution of 1791 and that of the United States. The general thesis of Montesquieu (1689-1755) is that laws are not only a creation of men - the spirit of laws is "the various relations of laws with various things" - but that the causes which they are numerous; there are therefore physical causes (climate), moral causes (religion, morals .); moreover, a primitive justice is at the origin of the laws; so there is a spirit of laws.

Königsberg: Martin Eberhard Dorn, 1746 [recte 1749] - Octavo (195 x 117 mm). Contemporary sprinkled sheep and speckled boards, spine decorated with gilt rules and floral device in compartments, morocco label, all edges sprinkled. Lower edge and corners very lightly rubbed; an excellent copy. With 2 folding plates at the end. Very rare first edition of Kant's first book. "In his early years Kant pondered the nature of space and time first from the point of view of Leibniz and then of Newton, but eventually he found both positions unsatisfactory. In his Thoughts on the true estimation of Living Forces [the present work] he took Leibniz's view and tried to explain the nature of space by means of the forces of unextended substances (monads) that cause such substances to interact. He attempted to account for the threefold dimensionality of space by appealing to the laws that govern such interactions; but he was not very successful, as he himself admitted" (DSB).

Appostoli presso Pietro Bentivenga, 1749. Folio (328x224 mm), contemporary full vellum binding, with gilt title on a leather label at spine; pp. [8], LX, XXXIII, 236. Beautiful and large chalcographic head- and final-pieces, and historiated initials, engraved by Orlando on drawings by Randazzo and Trisca. Rare edition, printed with great elegance on distinguished paper, of this collection of ordinances relating to the terrible plague that struck the city of Messina in 1743. That plague had halved the population, at the very beginning of the new regency by the Bourbon, who had returned to the harbor the old exemptions, giving a new impetus to the fragile local economy. The work is attributed to Carlo Antonio Broggia (see: Melzi, Dizz. anon.), but was collected and published by the historian La Placa from Palermo. The work is divided into three parts: the first part is a summary of the regulations and implemented ways to contain the spread of the epidemic in Messina during the centuries. The second part and the third instead report the documents relating to the establishment of the Supreme Magistrate (1575), which at that time had full powers, and all orders issued from 1743 on these occasions, as well as various documents, letters and the General Statutes for magistrates of the public health of the Kingdom of Sicily: these are provisions for purging of goods, fraud in health care licenses, information for sea quarantine hospitals, ships arriving from outside the kingdom etc. References: IT\ICCU\SBLE\010157 (8 copies). OCLC, 14330174 (1 copy in UK and 1 copy in USA), 493996279 (1 copy in France) and 804679304 (1 copy in Spain). Cat. Senato IV, 275-276; Narbone II, 165; Manca a Mira e Lozzi. Cond.: Presence of some ink spots at boards, but genuine wonderful copy printed in strong paper with wide margins, very fresh. A fine copy.

Still very good copy. ---- Norman 1328; Nissen BBI 2428; Ward & Carozzi 1358; Wellcome III, 482; Ravier 440; Hoover 521; Bibl. Dt. Mus., Libri rari 167. FIRST EDITION of this posthumous publication regarding the origin of the earth, originally written by the German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1691-93 and edited by Christian Ludwig Scheidt, which led to further study on fossils and the evolutionary history of the earth. "Leibniz's 'Protogaea', along with Woodward's 'Essay toward a natural history of the earth', was the lineal descendent of Stensen's theories of sequential stratification and the organic origin of fossils" (Norman 1328). "Adopting a Cartesian explanation of the origin of the Earth as an incandescent globe, Leibniz postulated the consolidation of an original crust, the condensation of an initially universal ocean, and the subsequent deposition of a sequence of strata containing fossils, with the simultaneous diminution of the ocean by evaporation. The bulk of the essay was in fact devoted to the description and illustration of fossils, and to the demonstration of their organic origin, as a crucial part of his whole synthesis. The posthumous publication of 'Protogaea' in 1749 proved highly influential, for it provided a model of Earth-history that allowed for the organic origin of fossils, preserved Steno's and Woodward's understanding of strata as sequential deposits, and was conformable to both Scripture and reason. Its most important effect, however, was to make it possible for the different fossils embedded in successive strata to become evidence of the history of life itself, although that conclusion was not at first drawn in any detail" (Rudwick M.J.S., The Meaning of Fossils, Episodes in the History of Palaeontology. University of Chicago Press, 1976, p. 91). - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.

Contemporary French mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments and with gilt-lettered red morocco llabel, marbled endpapers, red-dyed edges (joints of binding partly split, extremities rubbed, corners bumped and scuffed). Two small stains to title, occasional very light mainly marginal spotting, but generally a very clean and crisp copy. Provenance: Jean-Baptiste de Secondat baron de La Brède (1716-1796), eldest son of Charles de Seconat Montesquieu (signature to title-page); Giancarlo Beltrame Library. A near fine copy with interesting provenance. ---- Norman 285; Sabin 6876; DSB II, p.343. FIRST EDITION of the most important work to issue from the Peruvian expedition of 1735-1744, undertaken by the French Academie Royale des Sciences with the goal of measuring an arc of the meridian near the equator, resulting in the determination of the shape of the earth as an oblate spheroid. Bouguer quarrelled with his fellow scientists on the expedition, La Condamine and Godin, and thus published his own report separately. "Bouguer's work on the expedition. . . was of high quality. Apart from the main geodetic program, he did an astonishing amount of other scientific work, measuring the dilatation of various solids by making use of the large range of temperatures found in the Cordillera, investigating the phenomena of atmospheric refraction and the measurement of heights with the barometer, devising a new type of ship's log, and undertaking a number of other researches, despite the very difficult physical conditions under which the geodetic measurements had to be carried out" (DSB). - Visit our website for additional images and information.         Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particuliére, avec la Description du Cabinet du Roy

Engraved vignette on most titles, engraved headpieces, engraved portraits, engraved plates & maps, and printed tables (see below for details). 44 volumes bound in 45. Large 4to, green morocco gilt, signed by Thouvenin, covers within two frames of triple gilt filets, arms of the ornithologist François Victor Masséna, Duc de Rivoli, Prince d'Essling, in gilt on all covers, gilt floral devices in each corner, spines gilt, a.e.g. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1749-1804. First edition, the luxurious first printing, and the most remarkable set to appear in many decades, of this monumental work, of "the most celebrated treatise on animals ever produced."-Dibner, Heralds of Science, 193. This set was assembled for the amateur ornithologist and book collector François Victor Masséna, Duke de Rivoli and Prince d'Essling (1799-1863), son of one of Napoleon's greatest generals. A man of considerable wealth, François Victor formed important collections of books and bird specimens (more than 12,500), the latter is now in the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. Introduction: This set is absolutely remarkable: along with having all the required portraits, plates, maps, and printed tables as set forth by Heilbrun (who provides the best but still slightly faulty collation, see below), this set has been further illustrated with more than 1300 variant plates (proofs "avant lettres"), proofs with subtle variations or reversed, portraits in different states (one printed on silk), additional full-page plates of almost all of the numerous engraved head-pieces, additional plates prepared for but not used in the published work, and the maps in several states. Some of the plates are even present in three or four states. A reliable count of illustrations in this work is: 1262 engraved plates, one engraved portrait, 12 maps, and four folding tables. Our set contains 2607 plates, portraits, and maps, along with the required tables (both Heilbrun and Nissen have different totals). Many of the additional engraved plates are superior - printed more richly and on thicker paper - and reflect the engraver's art at the highest level. This set provides valuable information regarding the publishing history of the work. Clearly, as a publication of the government, a large stock of copies in quires along with quantities of plates remained with the printers and was available for a long time afterwards. Prince d'Essling was a well-known book collector at the highest level of sophistication (see his two sales catalogues of 1839 and 1845) and he assembled this set from the surviving stock of copies and plates, enriching his set with the additional variant plates. This set remained in the family until last year. Our set is very large (262 x 193 mm.), with very generous margins and with some lower edges untrimmed. In smaller copies, many of the plates are folding; in our set only the double-page plates are folding. The set has been bound by Thouvenin and is signed by him at the foot of Vol. I of the first series, Vol. I of the Supplément, and Vol. I of Lacepède's own additional supplementary eight volumes which completed the work. The Work: This enormous survey of natural history, including man and the mineral world, took 55 years to complete and is very much a work of the Enlightenment, much like the Encyclopédie in scope and collaboration. "With the help of his assistant, Louis Daubenton, as anatomist, and of later other collaborators (notably the Comte de Lacépède), but always under [Buffon's] supervision and control, this vast enterprise eventually covered not only the entire animal creation, but many other ramifications…He opens his great work with an essay called Théorie de la Terre, in which for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and of its development as a fitting home for living things…This rejection of a rigid system of classification, to which most biologists of his time adhered, and Buffon's belief in the mutability of species, implied clearly some preparation for the thought of Darwin."-Printing & the Mind of Man 198. "Buffon's work is of exceptional importance because of its diversity, richness, originality, and influence. Buffon was among the first to create an autonomous science, free of any theological influence. He emphasized the importance of natural history and the great length of geological time. He envisioned the nature of science and understood the roles of paleontology, zoological geography, and animal psychology. He realized both the necessity of transformism and its difficulties…He did establish the intellectual framework within which most naturalists up to Darwin work."-D.S.B., II, p. 581. A complete set comprises: -Histoire naturelle générale et particulière, 1749-1767, 15 volumes. -Histoire naturelle des Oiseaux, 1770-1783, in 9 volumes. -Histoire naturelle des Minéraux, 1783-1788, in 5 volumes (but here bound in 6 volumes with the plates bound separately). -Supplément, 1774-1789, in 7 volumes. and eight volumes of Lacépède's continuation and supplement: -Histoire naturelle des Quadrupèdes ovipares et des Serpents, 1788-1789, in 2 volumes. -Histoire naturelle des Poissons, 1798-1803, in 5 volumes. -Histoire naturelle des Cétacés, 1804, in 1 volume. NOTES ON THIS COPY: As mentioned above, this set was assembled for Prince d'Essling from the surviving stock of text and plates, enriched with additional portraits, plates, and maps, totaling 2607 (a detailed list can be supplied). Over 1000 of the original number of plates are the work of Jacques de Sève, father and son (Nissen provides a full list of artists) and the images range from exact anatomical drawings of skeletons and dissections to settings of animals in their natural habitats. Our copy is one of these "exemplaires exceptionnels": 1. Almost all of the charming engraved headpieces are also present as separately printed plates. 2. Most of the plates are present in two states, with letters and before letters but many are present in three or four states, exhibiting very subtle differences. 3. A number of additional plates prepared by Sève but not used in the published work are present. This is important documentary information. 4. The splendid portrait of Buffon after Drouais, normally bound in the first volume of the Supplement, has been bound in the first volume published in 1749 but in three states: with letters, "avant lettres," and reversed. Another fine engraved portrait of Buffon by Pujos in 1776 is also present. 5. The portrait of Buffon which is present in the first volume in the Lacépède is also present in Vol. II but in four states: regular plate paper, Hollande, China paper, and finally on silk! Our copy is complete with pagination collations as in Heilbrun (with a few exceptions as noted in the Haskell Norman catalogue) and plates (again, with a few exceptions as noted by Norman). Our set has a few trivial pagination differences from the Norman set (which was incomplete). BINDING: There were three Thouvenins active as luxury binders: Joseph l'âiné (1791-1834), who most probably executed these bindings for d'Essling. Joseph had a brother named "Joseph jeune" who died in 1844. Finally, there was another brother François but little is known of him and no authenticated specimens of his work are known. He died in 1832. A fine set. Several of the volumes have a few unimportant scuff marks. ❧ En Français dans le Texte 152. Heilbrun, Buffon, pp. 233-37. Nissen, ZBI, 672-(his plate count has errors). Norman 369-(which supplements and improves Heilbrun). If my counting is correct, Nissen gives 1260 plates and 4 maps for a complete set (but he does not mention the correct number of maps bound in the separate volume 30); Heilbrun indicates 1290 plates (but after having added his plates and maps I can only come up with 1252 plates plus 13 maps, two allegorical plates, and one portrait, in all 1268 plates).

Paris, Briasson, Jacques Vincent, 1749 - Paris, Briasson, Jacques Vincent, 1749 ; 2 vol. in-4 (25 x 20 cm) ; Tome I: XLIV, (4), 504 pp., 17 planches h.t. dépl. Références : Garrison and Morton, 2733: "Senac's valuable treatise on the heart added much to the knowledge of the anatomy and diseases of that organ ; he mentioned the leucocytes, which he considered to belong to the chyle, and he described pericarditis. Senac was the first to use quinine to palpitation" ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 823: "Here, in two volumes, is the first comprehensive and systematic treatise on the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the heart and its diseases. Senac described ossification of the coronary vessels, insufficiency of the cardiac valves, transfusion of blood, and the role of hydrothorax in circulatory failure. The first volume contains seventeen finely engraved plates of cardiac anatomy" ; Campbell M: Early anatomical knowledge of cardiac malformation, Br Heart J, 1971, 33(2), 169¿172: "Johannes Senac (I749) [¿] described the closing of the 'trou oval' and the 'canal arteriel' and realized that sometimes these failed to close. His short chapter on malformations included a case of complete absence of the ventricular septum, and he rightly explained the cyanosis as being due to an admixture of venous and arterial blood.' ; The Evan Bedford Library of Cardiology, 247 (2e éd.) ; Willius FA & Dry TJ: A history of the heart and the circulation, pp. 81-82, 370, 376, 384, 387, 395, 407, 413, 430, 433 ; Willius FA & Keys TE: Cardiac classics, pp. 159-163 ; Acierno LJ: The history of cardiology, pp. 34, 55-56, 58, 84, 88, 160 ; Olry R: Dictionary of anatomical eponyms, p. 139: 'rose' (the superficial muscle bundles of the apex cordis)" ; The Haskell F.         1749 George Anson Voyage Round the World MAPS Spain South America Brazil Peru

London : Printed for the author ; By John and Paul Knapton, 1749. - 1749 George Anson Voyage Round the World MAPS Spain South America Brazil Peru George Anson was an 18th-century British Navy admiral who is noted for his important world voyage in which he circumnavigated the globe. This voyage, beginning in 1740, was initiated in order to disrupt Spain and their acquisitions from the Pacific – even though the squadron saw certain danger. “Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters” (Rodger, 239) He saw substantial victory by capturing Spanish ships carrying pieces of eight, silver, and other treasure; thus, allowing Anson to return home a very rich sailor. This voyage took Anson and company into South America and home by way of China – a true world voyage! Authorship of this edition is held with some ambiguity. According to the DNB, "A claim was made that the work was written, not by Mr. Walter, but by Mr. Benjamin Robins. This has never been substantiated except by mere assertion; and though Robins was certainly employed as sub-editor and assistant. There is no reason to doubt the plain statement on the title page. Whether edited by Walter or Robins, the book was virtually written by Anson himself" Item number: #2148 Price: $1500 ANSON, George A voyage round the world, in the years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. by George Anson, Esq ; now Lord Anson .

"Acquaforte e bulino, 1749, firmata in lastra . "Etching and engraving, 1749, signed on plate. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition, the third state of six, printed by Piranesi in his tipography of Strada Felice. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB"", with margins, good condition. Ink addidition at the lower white margin, trasnslation of the title made by a contemporary French hand. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building." Hind n. 8, III/VI; Focillon 790.

Vellum 39.5 cm (Ref: Brunet 2,2/1146; Ebert 7243: the best edition; Graesse 2,540; Spoelder p. 618/19: Kampen 2) (Details: Back ruled gilt. Red morocco shield in the 'second compartment'. Board with gilt borders, and the gilt coat of arms of Kampen. Woodcut of Pegasus on the title. Printed in 2 columns. At the one finds a 198 p. 'Index germanico-latinus rerum, vocabulorum, phrasium, descriptionum & locutionum proverbialium') (Condition: Vellum slightly soiled, and age-toned. Folds in the half title and front flyleaf. Paper foxed and yellowing. Some faint waterstains) (Note: The German schoolmaster and lexicologist Basilius Faber, born ca. 1520 in Sorau, nowadays Polish Zary, was 'einer der bedeutensten Schulmänner des 16. Jahrhunderts'. He produced a 'Thesaurus' which long survived him. He died in 1576. (ADB 6, p. 489/90) The work was first published in 1571, and later revised and augmented by scholars like Cellarius and Graevius. The last and best re-edition is this edition, produced by the German classical scholar Johann Matthias Gesner, 1691-1761. It is a Latin dictionary/encyclopedia, with German and sometimes Greek equivalents. Lemmata are arranged under the word from which they derive. The article 'eo', 'to go', for instance fills 5 pages, and offers in alphabetical order all possible derivative composita, from 'abeo' to 'transeo', and under each of these verbs, we find, again in alphabetical order, numerous lemmata; e.g. under 'coëo' we find the short derivative articles 'coiens', 'coitus' 'coitio', 'coibilis', 'incoibilis', 'coetus', with the German equivalent and a number of elucidating 'loci' in ancient authors. Sometimes articles are of an encyclopedic nature, e.g. a word like 'charta'. This word, 'paper', receives one whole densely printed column, covering all kinds of aspects of paper in ancient sources, papyrus, biblos etc. This really is a classical 'Fundgrube'. (Op. cit. p. 489) The preliminary papers include the prefaces of earlier editions, of A. Bucherus (1625 and 1655), of Cellarius (1692), of A. Stübel (1717), and of I.M. Gesner (1635)) (Collation: a-b4, chi2, A-5V4, chi1, A-4M4, 4N4 (minus blank leaf 4N4), A-2A4, 2B2, 2C2 (leaf 2C2 blank)) (Photographs on request) (Heavy book, may require extra shipping costs) 7500 gr

A general map of Great Britain and Ireland with part of Holland Flandres, France.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1749 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Some restoration at lower centerfold; - size (in cm): 47,5 x 53,5; - description: Map shows total Great Britain with inset map of the Shetland Islands; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Titolo, filetti e decori floreali in oro entro scomparti su dorso a nervetti. Tagli rossi, sguardie marmoreggiate rosa. Jessop, 144. Chuo, 127. Weller, II, 125. BNF [FRBNF33994384] individua l'editore nel Durand. Cfr. Mario Manlio Rossi in Dizionario Bompiani delle Opere, VI, p. Francese
