Homann's map, showing British possessions in the Caribbean. At upper right of the sheet text in German relating to the areas depicted. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'. Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. They also issued a special Atlas of Germany with full sized plans of principal cities, school atlases and an Atlas of Silesia in 1750 with 20 maps. Condition: Good, given age. Bottom edge irregular with several small tears, not affecting image. Some staining and light soiling in the margins. A few minor spots. Some minor crinkles and creases. Original middle fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Farò poscia un compendio della maggior parte de' Re che li hanno governati e narrerò le rivoluzioni che sono avvenute in questo regno e quelle che hanno posto il mio Guerriero sul trono de' Sofi (1736).       - Antique print, titled: 'Carta Geografica Del Capo Di Buona Speranza' - Decorative map of the Cape of Good Hope, Africa, with an atrractive vignette. One of the most interesting features of this map is that the plantations in the area of todays Stellenbosch are marked with the owners names Cornelio De Boer, Simon de Groot etc.The emphasis of the map is on the best places to make landfall and on settlement. Aside from already established tracts of land, the map identifies arable land, meadows, marshes, valleys and other topographical features such as Table Mountain, the Helderberg, ‘Monti di Perle' (Paarl Rock) and ‘Monti Cavalli' (the Paardeberg). Interestingly, the legend explains the ring formation and function of the ‘Hottentot' (Khoikhoi) ‘coralli' or kraal. The map is decorated with a title vignette depicting Khoikhoi building a traditional round dwelling, an elephant, rhinoceroses and ships. Albrizzi's maps are scarce and beautifully engraved. Giambattista (Giovanni Battista) Albrizzi was the publisher of several illustrated books and maps. The Albrizzi's family was active in book publishing and selling in Venice for some 150 years. Condition: Very good, given age. Edges on verso with remnants of acid free tape from former matting.       Paris: Jean Francois de La Harpe. unbound. Map. Engraving. Image measures 8.5 x 10". Sheet measures 9.5 x 11" Map. Engraving. Image measures 8.5 x 10". Sheet measures 9.5 x 11". This beautiful map of the Arabian Peninsula dating to 1740 was issued by Nicolas Bellin. The map shows incredible detail along the coastline with little inland detail. Identifies the pearl banks along the coast of Bahrain. Several other coastal features, shoals and banks are also noted. Qatar is identified as Katara. A beautiful rococo style title cartouche adorns the lower left. The map is in good condition with some wear along original fold lines and minor offsetting. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).

Two quarto volumes, 701 pp in total + table of contents, index, and publisher's catalogue, with 26 engraved folding plates. An attractive set in in contemporary mottled calf, spines with raised bands and decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Small chip to head of Volume II, minor rubbing to joints, leather at upper corners of one volume rubbed through. Mariotte (1620-1684), was a pioneering experimental physicist and founding member of the Académie des Sciences. He is best known for his discovery of the blind spot in visual fields and his independent discovery of Boyle's Law (called Mariotte's Law in France), which states that the pressure of a given quantity of gas varies inversely with its volume at constant temperature. Through active experimentation, he made other important discoveries in physics, mechanics, hydraulics, optics, plant physiology, and meteorology. This set contains all of Mariotte's published works.

Il matrimonio tra questi due cugini della famiglia Doria duro' per 10Âanni, al termine dei quali la Principessa intento' questa causaÂfinalizzata Âall'annullamento del matrimonio a causa dell'impotenza del Principe. Il processo che ebbe notevole risonanza e coinvolse moltissimiÂÂtra iÂmigliori medici dell'epoca (Pascoli, Tarozzi, A. M. Maggi, Clerici, Nicelli ecc.) si concluse con l'annullamento del matrimonio. Subito dopo, nel 1742, si risposo' con Lazzaro Maria Doria dal quale ebbe 2 figli. Anche il Principe, benche' in base all'esito del processo fosse risultato impotente, risposatosi anch'esso nel 1742 con Eleonora Carafa, ebbe, addirittura, 14 figli. Questo curioso processo, pieno di particolari intimi relativi ai rapporti sessuali tra i coniugi e di perizie mediche inerenti la supposta verginita' della principessa e l'impotenza del principe, descrive in modo esemplare questioni legate alla conservazione dello stato patrimoniale e genealogico di famiglie aventi allora enormi patrimoni e detentrici di grande potere. According to Thiele and Landwehr, this scarce map was added to the editions of 1775 and 1780. Thus, it is extremely rare to find this map in this edition.Artists and Engravers: Wouter Schouten (1638-1704) joined the Dutch VOC as a surgeon on an adventureous expedition to the East Indies during the years 1658-1665. In 1660 he was present at the Dutch siege of Makassar (in Sulawesi) and he participated in the campaigns of Rucklof van Goens along the Malabar coast. Professore di anatomia e chirurgia al Jardin du Roi (l'attuale Jardin de Plantes), difese vigorosamente le teorie di Harvey sulla circolazione sanguigna, allora contestate negli ambienti medici parigini.       1740 - cartonnage souple de papier [11]-[5 bl.]-348 pp, 1740, , cartonnage souple de papier dominoté (reliure amateur de l'époque), , Manuscrit très soigné, rédigé à l'encre noire sur beau papier vergé, sans doute d'après les cours inédits du médecin montpelliérain Jean Astruc, fameux théoricien du siècle des Lumières, célèbre pour son imposante érudition. L'ouvrage comprend deux parties : les maladies de la poitrine (p. 1 à 159) et les maladies du bas ventre (p. 161 et suiv). En tête se trouve une table des matières ("Répertoire du présent livre"). Sa rédaction date de la période parisienne d'Astruc, qui enseigne, depuis 1731, au Collège Royal ; il est alors docteur de Montpellier et n'a pas encore été adoubé par la Faculté de Médecine de Paris (il en deviendra docteur régent en 1743). Le présent manuscrit est probablement un cahier d'élève. Notons que plusieurs institutions conservent des manuscrits analogues, sur le même sujet, d'après les cours d'Astruc : la Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de santé à Paris en possède un, antérieur au nôtre, rédigé en 1737 d'après les cours du Collège de France (Ms 2116 : Traité des maladies du bas-ventre) ; un autre, à la Yale historical Medical Library, est non daté et porte un titre un peu différent (Traité des maladies qui attaquent les parties contenantes dans la poitrine et celle de la gorge. Des maladies du bas-ventre) ; il en existe encore au moins 2 autres, datables de 1746-1748, à la McGill University de Montréal et à l'University of Chicago (C.f. : Doe, p. 194). Jean Astruc (Sauve, dans le Gard, 1684 - Paris 1766) fut professeur de médecine aux universités de Toulouse, Montpellier et Paris. Ce savant d'une érudition prodigieuse, auteur d'un corpus important d'oeuvres médicales, historiques, régionalistes et religieuses, fut un excellent théoricien et un grand historien de la médecine. Tout en demeurant fidèle à la tradition hippocratique et à l'École de médecine de Montpellier, Astruc fut ouvert aux idées de son époque, en étant, dans un premier temps, partisan des iatromécaniens, pour leur préférer, dans une seconde période, les thèses des iatrochimistes. Le conflit qui l'opposa aux chirurgiens, dès sa venue à Paris en tant que médecin ordinaire du duc d'Orléans (1726), puis médecin consultant de Louis XV (1730), a également contribué à sa renommée : Astruc reprochait effectivement aux chirurgien de préférer l'empirisme de leur pratique à la théorie médicale ; ces derniers le taxaient, quant à eux, de médecin mondain et praticien médiocre. Les écrits les plus fameux d'Astruc sont le De morbis venereis in quibu (1736), le Mémoire pour l'histoire naturelle de la province de Languedoc (1740) et le Traité des maladies des femmes (1761-1765) ; ces trois ouvrages importants ont paru à Paris chez Cavelier. L'oeuvre de ce médecin est considérable : outre les ouvrages dont il s'est chargé de la publication lui-même, on compte des cours que ses élèves à Paris, chargés d'admiration pour leur éminent professeur, ont publié de leur propre initiative, à partir de leurs cahiers. C_0602) de que los colores de los cuerpos eran resultado de la absorción y reflexión de la luz blanca, luz que se descomponía espectralmente en siete colores, Castel -jesuita filosóficamente antinewtoniano y responsable de la crítica de obras científicas en el Journal de Trevoux - partió de centrarse en los colores materiales antes que en los incorporeos, que es como denominaba a los que podían verse en el arcoiris y en los prismas. Para él, los colores estaban en una escala entre el blanco y el negro, en cuyo intermedio se situaban el azul 'celeste', el rojo 'fuego' y el amarillo 'tierra', insistiendo en que el especro de siete colores del que hablaba Newton era solo un resultado de la mezcla de los anteriores al salir del prisma dependiente de la distancia entre el foco de luz yel prisma. A partir de esta idea de composición, Castel desarrolló, siendo el primero en hacerlo, la idea de la rueda del color (el antecedente real de las cartas de colores de hoy en día), en la que lo sustancial era el 'tono' y lo accidental el 'matiz' (el color, propiamente). Dispuso una rueda con doce cuarteles en los que situó los tres primarios y varias mezclas entre ellos (tres entre el azul y amarillo, dos entre este y el rojo y cinco entre el rojo y el azul) y una gradación también con doce casos desde el negro hasta el blanco con distinats mezclas de ambos. La combinación de la rueda de los primarios y la gradación del blanco negro le proporcionaba 144 mezclas de modo que de cada color tenía doce tonos y en cada tono se podían apreciar doce colores. Aunque este enfoque de Castel no era el resultado de un examen de la luz, ni parte de una óptica, sino que buscaba una teoría del color que pudiera ser útil en la pintura y en los procesos de teñido, no le quedó más remedio que contrastar sus teorías con el enfoque newtoniano e intentar explicar los resultados experimentales de Newton con los mimbres de su teoría, a lo que dedica la breve segunda parte de su tetxo. Finalmente, como Castel abundaba en la idea extendida por Kircher de una relación entre las notas musicales y los colores, llegando a afirmar que cada una de sus doce bandas tonales eran una octava y que cada una de esas octavas se correspondia con cada una de las doce octavas de los óganos, quince años atrás había propuesto que sería posible construir un órgano de colores, el 'clavecín ocular'. Castel incluyó como colofón de su Óptica de los colores el texto con la descripción de tal clavecín, que el compositor Georg Philipp Telemann había publicado en Hamburgo el año anterior tras recibirla de uno de sus amigos. Su principio y su final fueron harto elocuentes. Si comenzaba diciendo que "en este libro no pretendo explicar las propiedades de la luz haciendo hipótesis, sino presentándolas y demostrándolas con la razón y los experimentos" lo cerraba haciendo algo inusitado: disponiendo al final del libro tercero 16 'cuestiones' en las que mediante preguntas abiertas fue declarando lo que pensaba sobre la naturaleza última de las cosas. Con estas 16 cuestiones suplantaba en parte un proyectado libro cuarto que, al parecer, estaba destinado a demostrar la existencia de fuerzas que actuaban a distancia. Para difundir su Óptica en el continente, Newton pidió y consiguió del célebre filósofo Samuel Clarke (pago de 500 libras mediante) que la vertiese al latín, pero, en el ínterin, revisó el contenido y añadió otras siete 'cuestiones' a las dieciséis de la edición original. En ellas dejó aún más claro lo que pensaba tanto sobre la naturaleza de la luz, sosteniendo una teoría corpuscular -crítica a Huygens mediante-, como sobre la dinámica de la naturaleza -frente a la visión mecanicista cartesiana- con la presencia de múltiples fuerzas activas que mantenían el mundo en movimiento (gravitatorias, eléctricas, magnéticas, y asegurando incluso la existencia de otras que todavía eran desconocidas porque actuaban en distancias demasiado pequeñas para ser observables con el ojo -fuerzas químicas-), y sobre la relación de Dios con la naturaleza. Una docena de años después, en la segunda edición inglesa, de 1718, Newton todavía añadió otras 8 cuestiones (que intercaló numeradas como 17 a 24), quedando en total 31. Eso motivó que se hiciese una nueva edición latina, la segunda y definitiva, en 1719. Las nuevas cuestiones estaban destinadas a postular la existencia del éter y a recuperar algo más el proyectado libro cuarto exponiendo más facetas de su filosofía natural (léanse física, química y biología, aunque estemos en un tratado de óptica) disimuladas como un programa de investigaciones que sería necesario realizar. En vida de Newton aún se publicó otra edición inglesa, en 1721, pero, como aunque se dijese corregida no añadía ninguna novedad, no generó una nueva edición latina, de forma que esta de 1740 es la primera edición publicada en latín después de la muerte de Newton y recoge la versión última de la Óptica, la contenida en las ediciones inglesa de 1718 y latina de 1719. Thomas Paine."</I> At the time Robert Treat Paine signed this document, he was 9 years-old for his father, Thomas. Thomas Paine was a pastor in a Weymouth church for several years before turning to mercantile pursuits in Boston. This document no doubt has something to do with his business.

      Incisione in rame, in plano, mm.560x400, presentata in elegante pass-partout a due finestre, con al verso la versione schematizzata dell'incisione. Tratta dalla prima edizione di una delle più celebri opera di Anatomia: Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani [Leiden: Joannem e Hermannum Verbeek, 1740]. Wandelaar era solito rappresentare le sue anatomie sovrapponendole ad uno sfondo ornamentale in modo di dare all'incisione un effetto un'illusione di vitalità e dinamismo. Le tavole furono incise e disegnate da Jan Wandelaer, allievo del più celebre Jacob Fokema e Guillem van der Gouwen, e del pittore Gerard de Lairesse, il quale preparò i disegni per l'atlante di Bidloo.       Augsburg, Engelbrecht, 1740 ca. 7 fogli (ciascuno di mm 188x235) su carta ritagliata con cura e con colorazione coeva; conservati e montati in sequenza entro scatola di plexiglass. Si tratta di un teatrino ottico in miniatura con le tavole numerate 31-37 nel margine superiore; è stato rifilato il margine inferiore che doveva riportare le scritte Cum Priv. S.C. Maj. - Mart. Engelbrecht excud. A.V,". La storia del diorama inizia con una elaborazione delle "vue d'optique" traforando particolari che, illuminando il retro in trasparenza, producevano l'effetto giorno-notte o, la modifica dell'immagine con l'arricchimento di personaggi o con la sostituzione del paesaggio di fondo. Le immagini, una volta modellate con cura a punta di forbice, divenivano delle autentiche "quinte" da inserirsi nell'apposito visore in legno, i cui nomi sono i più diversi: scatola ottica, teatro ottico o dioramico, pantoscopio, mondo nuovo, cosmorama, zoogroscopio, poleorama, aletoscopio. All'interno si potevano ammirare le scene illuminate ad effetto tridimensionale. Accanto a soggetti ispirati al teatro e all'opera appaiono danze, feste in villa, battute di caccia, giochi popolari. In questa serie risulta di grande effetto l'infilata prospettica delle colonne con drappeggi del teatro e sullo sfondo i giardini con fontana. Al centro della scena campeggia una sorta di cippo con due cuori. Esemplare nitidamente colorato e in ottimo stato di conservazione, come raramente reperibile, soprattutto nelle parti ritagliate a punta di forbice.. .

      Paris: Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1740. Hardcover. Very good. Second edition. Two quarto volumes, 701 pp in total + table of contents, index, and publisher's catalogue, with 26 engraved folding plates. An attractive set in in contemporary mottled calf, spines with raised bands and decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Small chip to head of Volume II, minor rubbing to joints, leather at upper corners of one volume rubbed through. Mariotte (1620-1684), was a pioneering experimental physicist and founding member of the Académie des Sciences. He is best known for his discovery of the blind spot in visual fields and his independent discovery of Boyle's Law (called Mariotte's Law in France), which states that the pressure of a given quantity of gas varies inversely with its volume at constant temperature. Through active experimentation, he made other important discoveries in physics, mechanics, hydraulics, optics, plant physiology, and meteorology. This set contains all of Mariotte's published works.
