A New Abridgment of the Law, 5 Vols

1736 - A Handsome Complete Set of Bacon's Abridgement Bacon, Matthew [fl. 1730]. [Sayer, Joseph (f. 1750)]. [Ruffhead, Owen (1723-1769)]. A New Abridgment of the Law. By a Gentleman of the Middle Temple. [London]: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, And R. Gosling, [and other printers], 1736, 1736, 1740; 1768, 1770. Five volumes. Complete set. Folio (13-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, raised bands, lettering pieces and blind volume numbers to spines, joints and spine heads of Volumes I-III discreetly reinforced. Light rubbing to spines, moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and heads of Volumes IV and V, corners bumped and somewhat worn, some scuffs and scratches to boards, front joints of Volumes IV and V starting, hinges of all volumes starting or cracked. Light foxing to endleaves, light toning to texts, slight heavier in places, occasional faint dampspotting to Volume IV. A handsome set in matching bindings. $1,950. * Volumes I-III: first edition; Volumes IV-V: third edition. Bacon's Abridgment is a digest of cases and treatises written by Sir Jeffrey Gilbert. In frequent use by practitioners in Great Britain and the United States into the early nineteenth century, it went through several editions. Its comprehensiveness and, still more, the logical system of subdivisions employed within each title, was a significant improvement over previous compendia of its kind. This made it, according to Marvin's Legal Bibliography, "quite a law library in itself" (85). The Abridgment was compiled and edited by Bacon. However, he died after he completed the entry for "Sheriff" and the rest of the work was produced editors by Sayer and Ruffhead. English Short-Title Catalogue T145688, N5624.         De imitatione Christi libri quatuor

Paris: e Typographia Regia, 1736. 4to (251 x 182 mm). 390, [10] pp. Engraved frontispiece after Jacques Stella, engraved title vignette and four figurative initials opening each book, thick and thin double rule page-borders throughout. Title a bit dusty, small tear and wrinkling in lower margin of G1, occasional minor stains, some dust-soiling to outer margins. Late 18th- or 19-century red morocco, covers with gold-tooled border composed of a small scallop roll, a dotted roll, a thick fillet, and a small leafy roll, with flowering plant tools at corners, spine in seven gold-tooled compartments with floral and foliate tools, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, two silk ribbon markers. Provenance: Count Stephan Károlyi, 19th-century armorial bookplate (in French); manuscript shelfmark notes on front flyleaf; Sándor Károlyi, 20th-c. shelfmark label mounted on verso of title. *** A handsome, large format edition of the Imitiatio Christi, printed at the Imprimerie Royale. The edition follows the text of the folio edition of 1640, which was the first book printed at the Royal Press, an indication of the centrality of the Imitatio in French religious and cultural life. The unsigned frontispiece, a reduced version of that of the 1640 edition, engraved by Claude Mellan after Jacques Stella, contains a dramatic scene of a sinner kneeling above an abandoned cornucopia of worldly goods, supported by an angel (or Veronica) who gestures toward the cross on which hangs the veil with the words of the title, suuronded by billowing clouds, cherubs, etc. The text, "volontarily anonymous" (Delaveau & Sordet, no. 221), is the version of Heribert Rosweyde. The stateliness of the edition, which is printed on heavy paper, is conveyed by the use of large Gros-Parangon (or possibly Palestine) roman types. Although the new Imprimerie Royale romain du roi types, designed by Grandjean in the 1690s (and easily recognizable by the tiny projection on the vertical bar of the lower-case l) had first been used over 30 years earlier (cf. Audin, Histoire de l'Imprimerie, p. 189), a traditional type fount was used here. The well-preserved morocco binding may be a Hungarian imitation of classic French 18th-century bindings. The Károlyi family were "an illustrious, extremely wealthy, Roman Catholic aristocratic family who had played an important role in Hungarian life since the 17th century" (Wikipedia art., Mihály Károlyi). In the 19th century Count Stefan Károlyi purchased a property in Fót, near Mogyoród, Hungary, where he built a church and a vast mansion. He was deeply religious, and had spent time in France from 1818, where he was influenced by Lammenais. His library is described in an article in the Ungarische Revue, 1883 (p. 692), as being particularly rich in religious books and French literature. Delaveau & Sordet 691; De Backer 358. Cf.

Finely engraved title, engraved port. of the author (a bit shaved at top), & nine full-page engraved plates. 20 p.l. (incl. engraved title & port.), 256, [3] pp. 4to, 18th cent. olive morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, arms in gilt of Louis Joseph de Bourbon-Condé (1736-1818) on covers, spine gilt (joints a little rubbed), a.e.g. Leiden: I. Elzevier, 1626. First edition, second issue with the addition of the finely engraved title-page dated 1626 and rare portrait (the first edition had only a printed title which was removed for the second issue). Apart from these first two leaves, the rest of the volume consists of sheets of the first edition. This is the "most famous early book dealing wholly with the subject of tobacco…Neander (1571-1639), a physician of Bremen, treats tobacco as a medicine, especially against the plague. Of pharmaceutical chemical interest are the prescriptions containing tobacco for treating a wide variety of diseases. Three of the fine plates are etchings by the famous Dutch painter Moses van Uytenbroeck, showing Indians preparing tobacco, and these are the earliest illustrations of the American tobacco trade… "The last two leaves contain a poem in Dutch, by Joost van Ravelingen, praising tobacco. Its popularity as a stimulant spread rapidly during the early seventeenth century, and on page 47 is an account of the postmortem of a young man whose death is attributed to his addiction to smoking, having had no previous illness."-Neville, II, p. 216-(lacking the portrait and incorrectly calling this a second edition). The finely engraved title-page is most handsome and depicts chemical apparatus. The engraved portrait of the author is rarely present. Fine and handsome copy. Faint dampstaining to margins at end. From the Debry collection with bookplate (sale 1966, lot 139). ❧ Willems 257.

Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd; Being a Correct Coppy of Mr. Ogilby's Actual Survey of All Ye Direct & Principal Crossroads in England and Wales; The Fourth Edition.

1736 - Tho. Bowles. 1736. First issue of fourth edition. Bound in full 18th century speckled brown calf gilt. Raised bands to spine, contrasting leather label. Index [8], Engraved maps and routes - 273 pages. Early ink ownership signature. One 2 inch close tear to edge of pages 17/18 with no loss. Boards slightly marked and worn otherwise a remarkably clean and sound copy of this beautifully produced and historically important book of maps. Please contact us for more photos and details. Ogilby's atlas is rightly celebrated in the history of cartography. The pre-turnpike road network is not depicted with any accuracy until Ogilby published his atlas of "principal roads" of England and Wales in 1675 (Ogilby, 1970). Britannia consisted of strip maps at 1:63360 scale of 85 routes on 100 copper plates which surveyed and mapped over 7500 miles of road. Earlier itineraries and road books had demarcated routes nationally but only as sequences of stages usually eight to twenty miles apart. In essence Britannia marked the transition from route, a direction of travel between known points, to road , a physical feature in the landscape. Despite the significance of Ogilby, his atlas has remained largely the preserve of the cartographic historian [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Suites de pieces pour le clavecin

printed and sold by John Walsh musick printer & instrument maker to his majesty at the Harp and Hoboy in Catherine Street in the Strand. Where may be had all the opera's & instrumental musick of the above author. No. 490. : c. 1736 and 1733 : London : Oblong folio, two volumes bound as one, engraved throughout. I: title, verso blank, and pp. [1] 94 [1], first and last pages blank; II: title, verso blank, and pp. [1] 2-83 [1], first and last pages blank. The same titleplate is used for both volumes, with the words 'Second volume' blocked out in printing for the first volume. : An attractive copy of the standard edition of Handel's harpsichord suites. Volume I contains the 'Eight Great Suites,' HWV426-433 which probably took their final form while Handel was working for the Duke of Chandos at Cannons (1717-1719) but derive from earlier sketches. Volume II contains the D minor suite HWV436 written after 1720, works which had appeared earlier in the so called piracy of 1719-20 (see below), a G major suite of questionable authorship HWV441, and the Chaconne in G HWV442/2 which is probably an early work. The publishing history of the suites is complex and still not entirely clear. Volume I was published under Handel's direct supervision in 1720 and printed by John Cluer - although he had worked with Walsh previously. The plates were revised, in Smith's analysis, c. 1721-22 and again c. 1725-27, but copies inevitably vary in their make up. Some were sold by Walshwith a pasted on imprint before he produced his own edition - the present edition - in 1736 with new plates, thus fixing the text in the final form as left by the composer. When Handel published his edition of volume I in 1720 he claimed 'I have been obliged to publish Some of the following lessons because Surrepticious and incorrect copies of them had got abroad'. This refers to the Pieces à un & deux clavecins composées par Mr. Hendle with the imprint of Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam. However Donald Burrows has pointed out that the music engraving is in the current London style, different from Roger's and the names of the movements are characteristically English. Burrows therefore suggests that 'the titlepage could just be genuine' and the publication a collaborative enterprise between Roger and a London publisher, possibly even Walsh. But this does not explainn why Handel himself disowned it and only included some of the pieces in his Volume I, promising to publish more if this volume received a favourable reception. The material not used by Handel appears, with other works, in volume II. The plates were, according to Smith, presumably prepared for Cluer, but no copies exist with his imprint and the volume was probably not offered for sale or was withdrawn from publication. These plates were then re-arranged by Walsh for the 1733 edition. The two volumes bound together here comprise the standard edition of these great works and the basis for the numerous subsequent editions. This copy is very lightly marked up with fingering and ornaments, but only in certain movements, suggesting that the performer - or her teacher - chose these movements to study, rather than taking the suites as wholes. The dust-soiling of the outer pages of Vol. I suggest that this part was not bound immediately. The performance marks are similar in the two volumes and were most likely made after the volume was bound. The owner of the volume, Grisel Hamilton, could be the daughter of Charles Hamilton, Viscount Binning who married Philip, 2nd Earl Stanhope in 1745, but the binding may be later than this. The sweet pea 'Lady Grisel Hamilton' (1895) is probably named for a later Grisel Hamilton.

        Principatus Silesiae Wratislaviensis.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1736 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Upper Left margin perfectly replaced; - size (in cm): 56 x 82; - description: Beautiful dekorativ map shows the area of Breslau in lower Silesia with beautifl herladic cartouche and an index of the map; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Aula Subterranea domina Dominantium subdita subditorum. Das ist: Untererdische Hofhaltung Ohne welche weder die Herren regieren/ noch die Unterthanen gehorchen kà nnen.

Verlegt von Johann David Jung, 1736., Frankfurt am Mayn: - Two parts in 1. Small folio. (12), 208, (4), 36 pp. Engraved half-title (signed Badollet fe[cit].), title printed in red & black, 44 woodcuts (see 1672 printing); some browning, lower margins waterstained, occasional minor marginalia, pp. 97-98 torn at lower gutter (some minor loss), ink stain pp. 15, 31-32. Original full vellum, manuscript spine title; some tearing or damage to spine. From the library of John Stuart, the Third Earl of Bute (1713-1792), George III's tutor and his first Prime Minister (1762-3) [no markings]. CLASSIC WORK ON MINGING ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY Eighth edition, the final German edition and the most complete. "Designation as the fifth edition is erroneous. This edition contains the annotations, etc., as in the 1672 edition, and [Christian] Berward's Interpes Phraseologiae, with separate pagination (36 pp.). There is a new section, designated as Second Appendix to the Fifth Book, describing saltpeter plantations and the manufacture of gunpowder. This is illustrated with three new woodcuts showing recrystallization of saltpeter and the milling and graining of gunpowder." â€" Sisco & Smith, p. 334. "Although the title-page credit one 'J.E.C.' with editing and enlarging it, this is essentially a reprint of the 1703 edition, with an added section on gunpowder, illustrated by engravings of powder mills and graining shops. 'J.E.C.' may stand for Johann Hiskias Cardilucius, who wrote the Foreword to the 1672 edition . the illustrations in this 1736 edition are identical with the ones in the 1580 edition and with a few exceptions were obviously printed from the same blocks." â€" Sisco & Smith. Considering the importance of Ercker's treatise it is remarkable how little is on record about him. He was inspector-general of the mines in Hungary, Transylvania, and the Tyrol, which position he held under three consecutive emperors in the 16th century, and he calls himself of St. Annen Bergk. This town is in the Saxon Erzgebirge, close to the Bohemian border. His book was highly prized at the time, for it was a record of practical experiences, and was not burdened with theories and hypotheses. Ercker's work should prove of interest to the economic historian for throughout it one can catch glimpses of the relation between scientist and plant operator and see the utilization of scientific knowledge and techniques for the control of mill operations for an increase of profit. "The only one of Ercker's works to contain many drawings, it presents a systematic review of the methods of testing alloys and minerals of silver, gold, copper, antimony, mercury, bismuth, and lead; of obtaining and refining these metals, as well as of obtaining acids, salts, and other compounds. The last chapter is devoted to salt-peter." â€" DSB, IV, pp. 393-394. Lazarus Ercker, (born c. 1530, Annaberg, Saxony [Germany]â€"died c. 1594, Prague, Bohemia [now in Czech Republic]) important German writer on early metallurgy. He studied at the University of Wittenberg (1547â€"48) and in 1554 was appointed assayer at Dresden, the first of many such positions he held in the state bureaucracy of Saxony. After 1567 he became control tester of coins at Kutná Hora, near Prague. In his great work, Beschreibung allerfürnemisten mineralischen Ertzt und Berckwercksarten (1574; "Description of Leading Ore Processing and Mining Methods"), he presented a systematic review of the techniques then in use for testing alloys and minerals of silver, gold, copper, antimony, mercury, bismuth, and lead; of obtaining and refining such metals; and of extracting acids, salts, and other compounds. It may be regarded as the first manual of analytic and metallurgical chemistry. â€" Britannica.
