         L’Histoire Justifiée contre les Romans.

A Amsterdam, aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1735. - in-12. 4ff. 362pp. (1f.blanc). [Attributes: First Edition]

Paris P.G. Le Mercier 1735 - 4 volumes, folio (42.6 x 27.8 cm). Title-pages printed in red and black. Engraved title vignettes by M. Baquoy after A. Humbolt, 4 engraved head-pieces after Humbolt, 65 engraved plates, the majority of these maps, many folding or double-page (a few with contemporary outline-colouring), by Delahaye, Desbrulins, and Fonbonne after Humblot, Lucas, Le Parmentier and others, engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut head-pieces. (first half title creased with paper flaw to lower outer corner, some occasional pale spotting or minor browning, minor marginal hole in Aaaaaa1.) Contemporary French mottled calf, sides with central gilt-stamped arms, spines in seven compartments with six raised bands, each with red and brown gilt-lettered lettering pieces in two compartments, gilt-decorated panels in the rest, small repairs to extremities, a very handsome set. The first edition of Du Halde's "encyclopaedic account of China" (Lust) -- and one of the earliest European sources on Chinese ceramics. Du Halde, who became a Jesuit priest in 1708, was entrusted by his superiors to edit the published and manuscript accounts of Jesuit travellers in China. The present work records the narratives of twenty-seven of these missionaries (listed in volume I, pp. li-li). Also notable is the Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Sibérie (volume IV, pp.452-458), which is the first published account of Vitus Bering's 1728 voyage through the eponymous straits, whose importance he failed to recognize after sighting no land. Beering depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu' Kamtschatka (bound between pp.452 and 453) is based on Bering's manuscript map, which was given to the King of Poland and in turn passed to Du Halde to be reproduced here. Bering's map is "The first printed map of part of present Alaska" (S.I. Schwarz and R.E. Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America).

Palau, 80424. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Contemp. calf, spine with label richly gilt, with crowned arms in lowest compartment, gilt outer and inner dentelles (corners somewhat bumped, edges and spine ends somewhat rubbed). Paris, Prault père, 1735. First edition. Large paper copy of the quarto issue of this comprehensive history of French theatre, arranged in chronological order. The work starts with Provençal poets, leading up to 1552; the following section is entitled "Théatre françois depuis 1552. jusqu'en 1735", divided in four periods; the third section deals with Ballets and Mascarades, the Théatre de l'Opéra, the Théatre Italien, and the Opéra comique ou Théatre de la Foire. De Beauchamps (1689-1761) wrote a number of plays, mostly on themes from classical antiquity.       Augsburg, Martin Engelbrecht, (um 1735). - Mit gestochenem Titel, gestochenem Vorwort und 12 ganzseitigen Kupferstichansichten von Martin Engelbrecht und Georg Pinz. Plattengröße ca. 21,7 x 32,5 cm. Alle Blätter von ornamentalen Bordüren umgeben 23 x 36 cm. Leicht beschädigte Kartonage der Zeit. Nagler, Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon XII, 495 6 (nennt 15 Bll.). Schott, Der Augsburger Kupferstecher und Kunstverleger Martin Engelbrecht und seine Nachfolger 213-226 (nennt 2 Bll. Einleitung und nur 11 Tafeln). Berliner Ornamentstichkat.

Paris, Cuchet, 1792. 2 volumes. 8vo. With 2 engraved plates, one folding, and 7 plates extra added. Contemporary olive sheepskin, modern paper sides.

Moström 293; Ward 179. Enlarged and highly valuable edition of this important mineralogical work. The first edition of the Sciagraphia consisted of 166 pages, and J.C. Delaméthrie provided the enlargements in the present edition. Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735-1784) was a Swedish scholar, and his book provided the first classification of minerals by their composition, and thus based on purely chemical principles. Bergman's analysis also disproved the widely held "saline principle" in crystallization. The two engraved plates belonging to this edition show equipment and crytaline geometry. The first is engraved by Sellier. The 7 numbered plates, which are extra added in this copy, are also engraved by Sellier, after Fossier, and depict minerals.Very good copy, only very slightly foxed, spine of first volume slightly damaged at top and bottom. Interesting copy of a valuable mineralogical work with 7 extra plates.

First edition of this cornerstone of any collection of books on China, which is also among the rarest and most desirable of important Americana, included in Rare Americana: A Selection of One Hundred and One Books, Maps and Prints not in the John Carter Library. This, "the first definitive European work on the Chinese empire" (Hill), was compiled by Du Halde, Jesuit former confessor to the duc d'Orléans, from the accounts, published and unpublished, prepared by 27 Jesuit missionaries during their travels. This encyclopaedic work not only provided valuable information on Chinese political institutions, education, language, medicine, science, customs and artefacts - importantly it is one of the earliest European sources on Chinese ceramics - but also marked the first appearance of 43 maps by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, internationally recognized as "the finest cartographer of his time" (Moreland & Bannister). Drawn from recent surveys commissioned by the Emperor Kang-hi from the Jesuits, these maps represented an immense improvement on existing knowledge and are considered by Tooley to be "the principal cartographic authority on China during the 18th century". For certain remote parts of northern China, Mongolia and Tibet, this work was the only adequate reference until the technological revolution in surveying in the 20th century. The work also contains the first separate map of Korea, together with a previously unpublished account of that country by Jean-Baptiste Régis. The book is also of considerable interest in terms of the exploration of America. Printed here for the first time is the eponymous Vitus Bering's account of his 1728 traverse of the Strait, "Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Siberie." Of comparable importance is the map "Carte des pays traversees par le Capne. Beering depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu'a Kamtschatka" bound between pp. 452–3, based on Bering's manuscript map, and containing the first representation of any part of Alaska, St. Lawrence Island. The manuscripts followed a circuitous route to Du Halde. Bering, a Dane who had risen in the ranks of the Russian navy, was sponsored on his expedition by Peter the Great, and when he finally returned to St. Petersburg in 1730, five years after Peter's death, his account was sent as a gift to the King of Poland, who in turn "gave them to Du Halde with permission to do with them 'as he saw fit'" (Hill). Lada-Mocarski reports that in many copies pp. 451–2 in vol. IV have been supplanted by the map; in this copy, both are present. An excellent example of this fine work of 18th-century encyclopaedism, superbly printed and engraved; this first edition was considered by Lada-Mocarski to be "the most desirable and significant." Cordier, Sinica 46–47; Cox I, p. 335; Hill 498; Howes 546; Lada-Mocarski, Books on Alaska II, pp. 20-22; Lust 12; Moreland & Bannister Antique Maps; Sommervogel iv 35.11; Tooley Maps and Mapmakers, p.107; Wagner p. 156; Wroth: Early Cartography of the Pacific, 91.

      - Amsterdam, Johannes Rotterdam, 1735 (derde druk). [x],320 pp. Met frontispice en 30 platen. Perkamenten spitselband. (M.          ANTI-CATHOLIC MEGA-BROADSIDE / PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH INQUISITION: A VIEW OF THE PRACTICES AND PROCEEDINGS OF THE TRIBUNAL OF THE INQUISITION; ALSO OF THE CEREMONIES PRACTICED BY THE ROMAN CATHOLICKS ON ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY.

Broadside (58.5 x 93 cm / 23 x 36.5 inches), composed of 12 distinct panels each with full original hand colour, dissected on the panel boundaries and mounted upon original linen (Very Good, lovely original colour, light even toning, some chipping with minor loss to blank marginal areas of middle and bottom left panels; light vertical line of toning to second row of panels; printers crease to right middle panels). - London: Printed and Sold by John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill, [circa 1735]. Exceptionally rare – an extremely large broadside composed of 12 panels, conveying Anti-Catholic rhetoric by showcasing the horrors of the Iberian Inquisitions as practiced in Portugal, Goa (India) and Spain, published by the prominent London printmaker John Bowles, after templates by Bernard Picart. - This resplendent broadside is one of the rarest, largest and most impressive Anti-Catholic prints published in England during the 18th Century. Issued by the prominent London printer John Bowles it capitalizes on the virulent Anti-Catholic sentiment that was prevalent in Hanoverian England in the years between the two Jacobite invasions of 1715 and 1745. In resplendent fashion, the broadside features twelve illustrated panels, all with brilliant full original colour, depicting a different aspect of the Inquisition as practiced in Portugal, Goa (the capital of Portugal’s Asian empire), and Spain, accompanied by explanatory text. The Iberian Inquisitions were considered to be the most extreme and barbarous manifestation of fanatical Catholicism (which indeed many Catholics found repugnant), and no other subject made the blood of strident Protestants boil hotter. While beautifully made, Bowles’ broadside was nevertheless ‘red meat’ for the street. While the explanatory text below the views was entertaining, the images themselves were accessible to the illiterate and semi-literate (the majority of the British populous). The images employed by Bowles are directly copied from engravings by from the early volumes of Bernard Picart’s Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (9 vols., Amsterdam: 1723-1743), edited by Jean-Frédéric Bernard. Picart, in turn borrowed some of this imagery from the engravings of Theodor De Bry, made in Cologne during the 1590s. Picart’s work was incredibly popular throughout Europe, and while, in the words of Jonathan Israel, Picart went to "immense effort to record the religious rituals and beliefs of the world in all their diversity as objectively and authentically as possible", he struggled to hide his Anti-Catholic bias.
