Wellcome IV, 279. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Septentrionalis Italiae Pars occidentalior in qua Praeter Sabaudiae Ducatum continentur Principatus Pedemontii Ducatus Montisferrati Status Mediolanensis et Genuebsium Respublica...

Coloritura coeva all'acquerello.Alcuni strappetti marginali, di cui uno più marcato che interessa la parte incisa, professionalmente e felicemente restaurati. Complessivamente gode di ottima conservazione. Manca al San Felici che pubblica esemplare conservato presso la Civica Raccolta di Stampe Achille Bertarelli. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German."

Tsukiyama teizo den [or] Tsukiyama niwatsukuriden [trans : Creating Landscape Gardens]

Numerous double- & single-page woodcut illus. plus text illus. 35; 19; 31 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. dark blue wrappers (wrappers a little rubbed), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Osaka: Kochiya Tasuke, 1735. First edition of one of the principal monographs on garden design and landscape architecture of Edo-period Japan; it is richly illustrated with many fine woodcuts, depicting famous temple gardens as well as the gardens from contemporary residences of wealthy merchants and farmers. These volumes were written by Kitamura (active 1735), with the fine series of woodcuts by Fujii Shigeyoshi in 1735. In this work, the author classified gardens by style and explains garden elements using prominent gardens as examples. It describes how to design a garden, different garden styles, stones, waterfalls, ponds, constructed elements (bridge, stone lantern, basin), plants, hedges, and construction techniques, classifying them in more than 100 categories. In this work, the author lists three important rules for garden design: 1. to learn sketching techniques because the intent of a Japanese garden is to copy beautiful natural scenery; 2. to learn how to compose rocks and plant trees; and 3. to learn how to recreate the harmonious beauty of nature by emphasizing the whole, rather than any particular element of the garden. Nice set and handsomely illustrated. Each volume has some worming touching images and text. We do not find the worming offensive. ❧ Thacker, The History of Gardens, p. 68-this work "illustrates styles and categories of garden arrangement which are still referred to in modern texts, though not always fully accepted. In particular, the categories of hill garden and flat garden are set out.".

A Map of the British Empire in America with the French and Spanish settlements adjacent thereto

Engrav'd by Willm. Henry Toms, London 1735 - (20 1/2 x 15 inches). Engraved map by William Henry Toms, with very fine full contemporary hand-colouring (with twenty-two integral inset views and plans) on 15 double-page and 5 single-page sheets, with full contemporary hand-colouring, mounted on guards throughout, with the double-page key map by Toms, hand-coloured in outline. With the Contents leaf, laid in. Expertly bound to style in half 18th-century russia over original 18th-century coated paper-covered boards, spine gilt with red morocco spine label, modern blue morocco-backed cloth box, titled in gilt on the 'spine' A monument to 18th-century American cartography: a highly attractive fully-coloured copy of the first large-scale map of North America, and the first printed map to show the thirteen colonies. Popple maps with full contemporary colour are exceedingly rare. Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansion of English, Spanish and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and it's tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" (Goss The Mapping Of North America p.122.) The present copy of Popple's map, with its full contemporary hand-colouring, would have been particularly useful in these disputes. Mark Babinski in his masterly monograph on this map notes that 'The typical coloring of fully colored copies . is described best by a contemporary manuscript legend on the end-paper affixing the Key map to the binding in the King George III copy at the British Library: "Green - Indian Countrys. Red - English. Yellow - Spanish. Blue - French. Purple - Dutch." The careful demarcation of the disputed areas by colour would have made the identification of whether a particular location was in one or another 'zone' a great deal easier. Thus the colouring adds a whole new dimension to a map that is usually only seen in its uncoloured state, and perhaps suggests that the copies with full hand-colouring were originally produced for some as-yet-unrediscovered official use to do with the international land disputes of the time. Benjamin Franklin, on May 22, 1746, ordered two copies of this map, "one bound the other in sheets," for the Pennsylvania Assembly. It was the only map of sufficient size and grandeur available - and the map is on a grand scale: if actually assembled it would result in a rectangle over eight feet square. Its coverage extends from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland to about ten degrees west of Lake Superior, and from the Great Lakes to the north coast of South America. Several of the sections are illustrated with handsome pictorial insets, including views of New York City, Niagara Falls, Mexico City, and Quebec, and inset maps of Boston, Charles-Town, Providence, Bermuda, and a number of others. "Little is known of Henry Popple except that he came from a family whose members had served the Board of Trade and Plantations for three generations, a connection that must have been a factor in his undertaking the map, his only known cartographic work" (McCorkle America Emergent 21.) Babinski has made a detailed study of the issues and states of the Popple map. This copy is in Babinski's state 5: the imprint on sheet 20 reads "London Engrav'd by Willm. Henry Toms 1733", and sheet one includes the engraved figure "1" in the upper left corner just above the intersection of the two neat lines. The small format table of contents is not present, but according to Babinski this is not unusual, indeed it was the case with two thirds of the copies examined. The key map is in Babinski's state 1, with only Toms' name below the border at the bottom and no additional place names in the 17 small insets. This copy also notable for containing the very rare Contents leaf, titled "The Contents of each Sheet of the Twenty Plates of Mr. Popple's Map of America." We have handled only one other copy of the map com [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Journey over Land, from the Gulf of Honduras to the Great South-Sea. Performed by John Cockburn and Five other Englishmen... A Brief Discourse of some Things best worth Noteinge in the Travells of Nicholas Withington

London: C Rivington, 1735 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary binding. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the map. An important work because of the account of central America, one of the few recorded by an outsider. Cockburn, Thomas Rounce, Richard Banister, John Holland, Thomas Robinson, and John Ballman, found themselves 'naked and wounded', stranded on the shore at Porto-Cavalo after being taken by Spanish 'Guarda-Costa'. They made their way inland and trailled around 2,400 miles across Central America to Panama. The account was a best-seller, although initially regarded as a fake because of the level of danger and privation it portrayed. The panelled calf binding has been repaired to reinforce the corners and edges, and provide a new spine with raised bands and title label. It is in very good condition. Internally the endpapers have been repaired - there is some loss to the top corner of the fep. Contents: title page (faint signature to top and staining to verso); preface iii-viii; text pp 1-259 (occasional staining eg bottom margin p57/8; mispagination - 106-170-108; small edge tear bottom margin p 159); 'A short account of what befel Mr Rounce pp 260-264; title page for Travells of Nicholas Withington; text pp 267-341; Letters pp 342-349; Finis; publisher's list 3pp. With decorative head and tailpieces. Contents generally clean, in good condition overall.

82 S. Rückenbroschur. Hayn/Got. V, 138 Estreicher II, 469.

Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1735 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57,5; - description: Map shows total Prussia with the Baltic Sea coast, with splendoufully cartouche, ship representation and coat of arms. On inset map Neuchatel.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Holograph Document Signed by Christopher Fell and Simon Johnson, Aldermen of New York City, 1735

New York 1735 - Approximately 7.75" x 6.75". Old folds, small glassine repair and docketed on the verso, a little age-toning, very good. A deposition given by Simon Johnson, in the Mayor's Court, taken before Christopher Fell, dated June 3, 1735, and Signed by both. Johnson, apparently in an attempt to keep a debtor from absconding, states that the debtor, John Remorse(?) ".informed him the deponent that the said John was going Beyond Sea in a short time and further this depon't Saith not."Both Fell and Johnson (Fell's occupation was listed as "Bolter," presumably a maker of bolts and bars; Johnson's as "Gentleman"), were elected, along with a slate of mostly workingmen, a couple of months earlier in repudiation of Colonial Governor Cosby's more well-to-do candidates, in part assisted by the anti-Cosby editorials of The New York Weekly Journal, a newspaper published by John Peter Zenger. When the Alderman refused to command the hangman to burn Zenger's Journal because of its satirical articles and japes against Cosby, Zenger was put on trial, and ultimately acquitted, in an extraordinarily important reaffirmation of the freedom of the press. It was assigned to Fell and Johnson (with a third Alderman, Stephen Bayard), to award Zenger's Philadelphia attorney Andrew Hamilton, Esq., the Freedom of the City of New York for his part in securing Zenger's acquittal, expressing a: ". grateful Sense of the remarkable Service, done to the Inhabitants of this City and Colony, by Andrew Hamilton Esq of Pennsilvania, Barrister at Law by his Learned and generous Defence of the Rights of Mankind, and the Liberty of the Press, in the Case of John Peter Zenger. ."A nice artifact of two New York City officials involved in the Zenger Trial.
