The case of the planters of tobacco in virginia...a vindication of the said representation

London: J Roberts, 1733. Contemporary paper-backed marbled boards. From the Astor Library and New York Public with a duplicate release stamp, and the library of Gordon Jones, M.D., with his bookplate. First edition. The tobacco planters of Virginia in the British Colonies in America became outraged by the hardships imposed upon them by acts of British Parliament. The vast majority of American tobacco was exported to England, and thus planters in the Colonies were dependant for their survival upon payment by tobacco merchants in Great Britain. Fraud and corruption by those tobacco merchants were rampant; higher duties were imposed regularly, and bonds and security had to be paid prior to export. Planters were warned not to trust the merchants and in addition to other acts of protest, the representatives of the planters in Virginia proposed keeping the tobacco in a warehouse under lock and key.

HISTORY OF THE RENOWNED DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA.translated by several hands: and published by Peter Motteux.

London For John Knapton, R. Knaplock, J. Sprint, D. Midwinter, J. Tonson [et al] 1733 - 4 volumes. An early printing, "Carefully Revised and Compared with the Best Edition of the Original at Madrid By Mr. Ozell". "Adorn’d with New Sculptures", comprised of 15 fine woodcut plates and woodcut head-and-tale-pieces, and engraved initials. 12mo, beautifully bound in full polished calf and signed by Bayntun of Bath, the spines with gilt ruled raised bands separating compartments elaborately decorated with fully tooled panels incorporating central gilt devices and with red morocco labels lettered in gilt. [xxi], 311; [vi], 304; xii, 312; 359 pp. A superb set in especially fine condition. Very handsome and beautifully preserved. A WONDERFUL PERIOD AND EARLY EDITION IN ENGLISH OF CERVANTES GREAT CLASSIC. This is the best of Motteaux’s editions, the most faithful to the Spanish original yet retaining the flow and style of his earlier English translations. Motteaux’s translation was also chosen for English illustrated editions by Gustave Dore and Salvador Dali. The engraved illustrations used in this edition are both charming and evocative. They add tremendously to the appeal of this printing. DON QUIXOTE ranks among the greatest literary works of Western Civilization. "What had begun as a simple satire on the tedious chivalric romances of the time broadened into a sweeping panorama of Spanish society. It was for this, the liveliness, and the gibes at the famous, which one it instant fame. Its larger claims, the subdued pathos, its universal humanity, were slower to be appreciated. But within months Don Quixote and Sancho Panza had become legendary.Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times, and there are very few who have not at one time or another felt themselves to be Don Quixote confronting the windmills."       Berlin 1733 - Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666-1743) Engraving from Vorstellung der Vögel in Teutschland und Beyläuffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben und Nach Ihren Natürlichen Farben Berlin: 1733-1763 Hand-colored copperplate engravings Sheet size 14" x 9"; Framed size 18 ½" x 14" Johann Leonhard Frisch had a diverse career, working as a singer, an interpreter in the German army, a headmaster of a school in Berlin, and finally artist and publisher. After settling in Berlin, Frisch became a member of the Society of Sciences in 1706, under the recommendation of the German mathematician Gottfried Leibnitz. Frisch was interested in natural history and collected specimens to form his own “Cabinet of Curiousities.” His drawings of birds from this collection would later become the basis for this publication, which included 252 bird illustrations. Frisch began publishing Vorstellung der Vögel in Teutschland und Beyläuffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben und Nach Ihren Natürlichen Farben in 1733. The work was published in 14 parts, with a supplement, over a period of thirty years. It was completed after his death in 1763 by his sons, Leopold Frisch, who wrote the text, and Ferdinand Helfreich, who together with Philip Jakob Frisch, engraved and colored the plates. The last 30 plates were by Johann's grandson Johann Christoph Frisch. This rare work is divided into twelve parts for the different bird families, and covers European and some exotic species.

Opere fisico-mediche stampate e manoscritte. raccolte da Antonio suo Figliuolo, corredate d'una Prefazione.

      - Venezia, S. Coleti, 1733. 3 volumes. Folio (355 x 225mm). pp. (2), lxxxii, 469; (4), 551; (4), 676, with 92 engraved plates, 3 engraved title-vignettes, 2 engraved plates of portraits one of Vallisnieri and the other one of Contessa Celia Grilla-Borromea, to whom one of the works is dedicated and some engravings in the text. Contemporary half calf, a bit rubbed (frontcover hinge of first volume splitting). First edition of Vallisnieri's collected works. It was edited by his son Antonio and contains all his famous contributions on zoology, entomology, medicine, geology and natural history. Antonio Vallisnieri (1666-1730) was a pupil of Malpighi at Bologna. "In comparison with contemporary scientific thought, Vallisnieri's work has a very modern character - as Redi had already done - the way opened by Galileo (whom he quotes only twice) and Francis Bacon (whom he also quotes) he rejected Scholastic knowledge and trusted solely in direct observation and in experiment. Vallisnieri was thus one of the first modern naturalist to have a clear awareness of the character of scientific phenomena" (DSB). Vallisinieri did a.o. extensive research on the reproductive system of men and animals, he complemented to Redi's demonstration of the fallacy of the hypothesis of spontaneous generation and was a forerunner of evolutionary concepts. Nel 1752 a soli 19 anni venne incaricato di giudice per tutto il distretto delle Valli di Sole e di Non. Viaggia molto, prima in Italia e successivamente in Germania, Danimarca, Olanda e Francia.

The State Dunces. Inscribed to Mr. Pope.

London: Printed for W. Dickenson in Witch-Street. 1733. First Edition Folio, [-]1, B-E2, F1, [ii], 18 pp, disbound.Ascertained by Foxon (q.v.) to be the first of five editions dated 1733. "Whitehead's first notable satire, The State Dunces (June 1733), in heroic couplets, was inscribed to Pope and indebted to The Dunciad (1728-9), but in so far as Whitehead raises his sights to take in bishops, politicians, and, above all, Walpole, he anticipates Pope's New Dunciad (1742). Robert Dodsley bought the copyright for 10 guineas, prompting Johnson, who had a low opinion of Whitehead, to insist on no less for his London (1738)." -- ODNB
