A Voyage Round the World, by way of the Great South Sea, perform'd in the Years 1719, 20, 21, 22, in the Speedwell of London.

London: J. Senex, 1726. Octavo, with a folding double-hemisphere world map and four fine engraved plates, two of them folding; contemporary panelled calf, well rebacked. First edition of several of this thrilling account of a privateering expedition in the South Seas. Shelvocke's very readable narrative, though chiefly intended to defend himself against charges of piracy and embezzlement, was a best-seller enjoyed for many years by the reading public. At William Wordsworth's suggestion nearly seventy years after its first publication it was the immediate prompt and one of the chief sources for Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.'Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernàndez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao. Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct... Shelvocke mentioned the gold of California and the guano of Peru...' (Hill).'On the map of the world, California is shown as an island. Two of the plates represent male and female inhabitants of California. Shelvocke has the fullest account of California, the natives and other features, of any of the old voyagers. Gold-dust was discovered by the party in such abundance, or so they claimed, that they were 'prejudiced against the thought that this metal should be so promiscuously and universally mingled with the common earth', but the specimens they brought away were lost...' (Cowan). The four very fine engraved plates are by the celebrated designer and cartographer John Pine, "notable for his artistic contribution to the Augustan style". Shelvocke's sometimes hair-raising narrative was a direct source for Coleridge's Ancient Mariner. Coleridge and Wordsworth were walking across the Quantocks in late 1797 when their conversation turned to 'laying the plan of a ballad' (as Wordsworth's sister Dorothy later recalled) to be written jointly. Wordsworth later noted that 'I had very little share in the composition of it, for I soon found that the style of Coleridge and myself would not assimilate'; but he reminisced that 'certain parts I myself suggested; for example, some crime was to be committed which would bring upon the Old Navigator, as Coleridge afterwards delighted to call him, the spectral persecution, as a consequence of that crime and his own wanderings. I had been reading in Shelvocke's Voyages, a day or two before, that, while doubling Cape Horn, they frequently saw albatrosses in that latitude, the largest sort of sea-fowl, some extending their wings twelve or thirteen feet. 'Suppose,' said I, 'you represent him as having killed one of these birds on entering the South Sea, and that the tutelary spirits of these regions take upon them to avenge the crime.' The incident was thought fit for the purpose, and adopted accordingly. I also suggested the navigation of the ship by the dead men, but do not recollect that I had anything more to do with the scheme of the poem....'. Provenance: Richard Shuttleworth Streatfeild (1805-1865, with armorial bookplate). Sides of binding a bit rubbed but a nice copy.

Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver..

London: Benjamin Motte, 1726. A few traces of very light spotting here and there, a very appealing copy in a most attractive binding.. Two volumes octavo, with the engraved portrait frontispiece of Gulliver (in the second state correct for this edition), 6 numbered engraved plates, the first two maps bound as additional frontispieces; nineteenth-century polished sprinkled calf by Rivière, spines ornately gilt, double labels, French fillet gilt borders to sides, marbled endpapers with gilt dentelles. One of the greatest of all works of English (and travel) literature: "Gulliver's Travels has given Swift an immortality beyond Temporary Fame" (PMM). First edition, Teerink´s "B" or third issue. The first three printings have traditionally been thought of as different issues of a single first edition. Although they technically represent different editions Teerink still thought it 'advisable to stick to the well established practice of calling the three 1726 editions first', in part because both the printer and the author thought of them that way. They appeared in very short order, the first printing having sold out in a week. Sets of odd volumes have been made up over the years, but there were no mixed issues at the time of publication and both volumes of 'correct' sets should comprise entirely the A, AA, or (as in this set) the B editions. The portrait is invariably found in its second state in the AA and B editions (with the inscription "Captain Lemuel Gulliver of Redriff. Ætat. suæ LVIII." around the oval and the tablet bearing a Latin inscription, printed on paper with vertical chain-lines).Gulliver is one of the most famous English books of all time, and the greatest work of literature associated with Australia. It is a crucial work in the Imaginary Voyage tradition, particularly for its use of a series of realistic framing devices which include maps, an editorial comment that the work has been greatly reduced by the omission of most of the material relating to winds and tides, and reference to genuine sailors such as Dampier or their props, such as Sanson's Atlas. Gulliver, who is made a cousin of William Dampier, comments at one point that he was 'coasting New Holland', and at another that he has been 'driven by a violent storm to the north-west of Van Diemen's Land' -- in the very year (1699) that Dampier was in fact exploring the Australian northwest. Gulliver is quite precise in his mapping of the lands he visits, and as Davidson notes, 'With a latitude given as 30°2' south, the imaginary Lilliput... is placed somewhere in South Australia, probably near the isles of St Francis and St Peter at the eastern end of the Great Australian Bight'. From its first publication the success of Gulliver was immediate and sustained, its influence enormous. Gove knew of over one hundred eighteenth century editions and there have been countless since. Although it had its famous detractors (notably Samuel Johnson's famously dismissive 'When once you have thought of the big men and little men, it is very easy to do all the rest') it has become one of the best loved and most immediately recognizable works of fiction. No one was more surprised by this than Swift himself, who had said to Pope that the satire would never be published until 'a printer shall be found brave enough to venture his ears'. Provenance: The 19th-century British bibliophile S. A. Thompson Yates, with his bookplate on front pastedowns.

RATIO DISCIPLINÆ FRATRUM NOV-ANGLORUM. A FAITHFUL ACCOUNT OF THE DISCIPLINE PROSESSED AND PRACTISED; IN THE CHURCHES OF NEW=ENGLAND. WITH INTERSPERSED AND INSTRUCTIVE REFLECTIONS ON THE DISCIPLINE OF THE PRIMITIVE CHURCHES

Boston: Printed for S. Gerrish in Cornhill, 1726. [2],iv,10,207,[3]pp. including contents leaf. Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked. H3 torn, lower margin of Ee4 clipped, upper corner of title torn with loss to a few letters supplied in old manuscript facsimile. Good. Provenance: W. Cogswell (early signature). One of Cotton Mather's most important works, and an "important exposition of the tenets of Congregationalism that carefully reaffirms the principles of the CAMBRIDGE PLATFORM" (Streeter). Holmes reveals that although published in 1726, the work was actually written in 1701, quoting from Mather's diary from Oct. 3 of that year: "About this Time I finished a Work, which cost me much Time, and Care and Study. I wrote in a Book of above an hundred pages in Quarto, an account of the Principles and Practices of the Churches of New England. But I embellished it all along, with a further Account of what was done in the primitive Churches, which required some exquisite labor. I concluded, that a Book of this Importance, would have a mighty Tendency, to preserve the holy Discipline in our own Churches, from the Dangers of the Apostasy which may threaten it, and promote the Designs of Reformation abroad in the world." Holmes reviews and explains the many delays in Mather publishing the work, the addition of Increase Mather's "Attestation" dated 1719, and the eventual publication in 1726. The final publication was nearly derailed as the original manuscript was scattered by a strong gust of wind, with the loose sheets finding their way into the garden, the wood pile, and strangers' hands. That every page was recovered without the loss of a single sentence was, as Mather reveals in a letter to Thomas Prince, a sign that the "Angel of the Lord Look'd after it...I don't wonder that such a work must be brought forward with a Struggle. Tis a sign, tis for the Kingdome of God!" (quoted in Holmes). EVANS 2775. SABIN 46474. HOLMES 318. STREETER SALE 672. CHURCH 903.

Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World (Gulliver's Travels)... by Lemuel Gulliver

FIRST EDITION. This is an outstanding untouched example of Teerink's A edition, the true first edition, preceding the AA and B editions. As Sir William Temple's secretary at Moor Park, the young Swift had access to many travel accounts in Temple's library. A frequent reader of such books during his formative years, Swift began working in 1714 on his own fictional account of the travels of Martin Scriblerus. The success of Robinson Crusoe (1719) helped spur on the writing of the book, a satire not only of travel narratives but of many aspects of eighteenth-century life including politics, science, commerce, and society. By the 1720s that work had become Gulliver's Travels. In March 1726 Swift came to England for the first time since 1714, bringing the manuscript of Gulliver's Travels. "To preserve his anonymity, Swift dealt with Motte by post and through intermediaries. ... It has always been assumed that political prudence was the main reason for Swift's so carefully preserving the secret of his authorship. Certainly Swift enjoyed the thought (whether real or illusion) of writing dangerously" (Lock, "The Text of Gulliver's Travels"). The author returned to Dublin even before the parcel had been delivered to the publisher. Although it was rumored that Swift was the author, he maintained the fiction that he knew nothing of the authorship in his conversation and correspondence. Motte hurried the book into print, using five printers who took different sections of the text. The initial printing (Teerink A) sold out within one week, and two additional editions (AA and B) soon followed. Gulliver's Travels was an immediate success, and the book has remained one of the enduring classics of English literature. Thomas Gay wrote that "from the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet Council to the Nursery." The influence of Gulliver's Travels has been vast. The terms Lilliputian, Brobdingnagian, and Yahoo have entered the language. The book inspired countless sequels, adaptations, parodies, and imitations worldwide in print, comics, cartoons, television, stage, and film. The wildly imaginative book became a source of inspiration for authors from Voltaire to Orwell, and it is one of the few works of fiction of its time that is still widely read for pleasure. A fine, unrestored copy of Gulliver's Travels is a cornerstone of any collection of the greatest books in English literature. Teerink 28 (A edition). Rothschild 2104-6. Printing and the Mind of Man 289. Grolier/English 42. Two volumes. Second state of portrait as usual. Contemporary paneled calf. One joint cracked, another slightly cracked, a few minor flaws, but an unusually fine set. Calf case.

Small 8vo (13.5 x 10 cm). Title with woodcut coat-of-arms of Cardinal Everard van de Marck in a 4-piece woodcut border, a large woodcut coat of arms on the last page, 2 woodcut illustrations, one showing Mary and Jesus with Saint Anne (63 x 42 mm), and the other a bishop in his study (45 x 43 mm), each in the same 4-piece woodcut border (different from that on the title-page). Capitals rubricated throughout, some woodcuts also rubricated and some headings and other words underlined in red. Vellum (ca. 1700?).

      - NK 1726; Machiels 931; Nijhoff, L'art typografique XII, 35-38 & XXVIII, 176; USTC 404768, 407352 & 430366. First (and only 16th-century) edition, in the original Latin, of Placentius's history of the bishops and general history of the dioceses Tongres (Tongeren), Maastricht and Liège (Luik), in the eastern central Low Countries, up to 1506. What appears to be the book's first owner signed his name in red at the foot of the title-page and (with further information) at the foot of the first page of his manuscript index: "Pro Thoma. v. Ven[n]e, p[res]b[yte]ro in Oirschot convi[vio]rum" (For Thomas vande Venne, priest of the monastery in Oirschot [Brabant]). He came from a leading Oirschot family. His index has three parts, listing the 84 bishops by location and alphabetically, and indexing the most important subjects. These and his notes are written on a quire of 4 leaves. He probably also wrote the occasional annotations in the margins. Also with later owners’ inscriptions, including the Antwerp Jesuit Jean P. Clé (1722-1800) and the Comte d'Oultremont (Charles-Ignace (1753-1803) or Émile (1787-1851)?), the Antwerp city librarian and archivist Frederic Verachter (1797-1870) and the Belgian politician and nobleman Gustave van Havre (1817-1892).Slightly trimmed, shaving many of the manuscript leaf numbers, but in very good condition. With a few tears in the front paste-down and its conjugate, and a small hole in the vellum, but the binding is still very good. An essential early source for the history of what is now the southeastern Netherlands and northeastern Belgium, especially its religious history.
