Le Seul Almanach des Dieux, Pour l'Année MDCCXXII (1722)

Bordeaux: Pierre Calamy, 1721. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. 24mo (6 1/4 x 4"). 88, 8pp. Modern half calf over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Modern endpapers and fly leaves. Woodblock frontispiece and title page. Decorative headpieces. Rare "Almanach des Dieux" (Almanach of the Gods) for the year 1722, containing a calendar, articles on remedies to stay safe from the plague, on how to grow fruit trees, etc.. Also includes a list of the births and deaths which occured in the French Royal family from 1645 to 1720, a list of the main Fairs in the kingdom, a list of arrivals and departures of mail coaches from Bordeaux, etc.. This almanach is prefaced by an anti-semitic text titled "récit véritable" (true story) about a certain Felix Coën, a Jewish messianic pretender in Ferrara (Italy) supposedly crowned on August 2, 1721 by the local rabbi at the synagogue, while a gentile newborn was being bled to death, and his blood collected to be used for Challah bread. The story ends with the Inquisitor of Ferrara arresting the rabbi, the whole Jewish assistance and Felix Coën, and preparing their upcoming trials. This ritual murder calumny was used by the Christian Church in its persecution of the Jews. To accentuate the horror supposed to be felt by any "good" Christian reader, this anti-semitic text is accompanied by an impressive 9 x 8" folded plate (image: 8 3/8 x 7") in red ink depicting the gruesome scene. At verso, also printed in red, is an advertisement from publisher Pierre Calamy. We assume this story to be fictitious, with a clear antisemitic intent as we haven't been able to find any historical reference to either Felix Coën, the "messianic pretender," or to the August 2, 1721 events leading to the arrest of the Rabbi of Ferrara and the whole congregation. This work is extremely rare: No copies in OCLC-WorldCat, and no electronic copy to be found online.Verso of plate, and inner margin of pages 13 to 16 expertly repaired. Slight water-staining at lower margin of very first and very last leaves (not affecting lettering). Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in French. Binding and interior in overall good+ to very good condition.

Printed for A. Bettesworth and J. Battley in Pater-Noster-Row J . Pemberton in Fleet Street a E. Currll in the Strand., London 1721 - Hardcover. Octavo. [ii] + xvi + 236pp. Contemporary blind ruled calf, professionally and very neatly rebacked with original gilt embellished spine laid over, and original boards, corners sympathetically renewed, gilt titled spine label. One engraved plate. An attractive early edition of this study by John Aubrey (1626-97). Despite the book's rather ambiguous title - 'Miscellanies' - the contents are made clear by its lengthy subtitle, and by the 'Introductory Title' which appears on page one: 'A Collection of Hermetick Philosophy.' Aubrey was fascinated by the occult and supernatural, and 'Miscellanies' is a broad-ranging study, with sections on auspicious and inauspicious dates, omens, communications with angels, and magick, as well as a study of ‘second sight’ (the ability to foresee future events through divine inspiration) that is reputed to be the first treatment of the subject to appear in print. The chapter on "Magick" includes a few short references to witches and witchcraft: notably "Vervain and dill, Hinders witches from their will", and several stories recounting methods used to hinder witchcraft. The book was first published in 1696. This second edition, revised and enlarged, includes an account of the author's life. Light overall rubbing and wear to boards, armorial bookplate and private library plate on front pastedown, endpapers browned and a bit foxed, a little scattered browning and light foxing, a few lightly creased corners, text pages fairly bright and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Treatise of Laws: Or, A General Introduction to the Common, Civil.

1721 - Scarce Treatise by Jacob on Common, Civil and Canon Law Jacob, Giles [1686-1744]. A Treatise of Laws: Or, A General Introduction to the Common, Civil, and Canon Law. In Three Parts. I. The Common Law of England: Illustrated in Great Variety of Maxims &c. Also the Use of this Law; With References to Statutes, in All Cases. II. Of the Civil Law, Intermix'd With the Law of Nations, and Its Use Here in England; and a Parallell Between Civil Law and Common Law. III. The Canon Law, and Laws Ecclesiastical; Containing the Authority, and Rights of the English Clergy; Of Patrons and Churches; Courts Ecclesiastical, Trials, &c. The Whole Adapted to the Use of Students, and Practicers of the Law; Students of the Universities; Civilians, Proctors, Ecclesiasticks, and All Young Gentlemen. London: Printed for T. Woodward and J. Peele, 1721. [ii], vi, [6], 533, [15] pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining existing spine with raised bands and lettering piece, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, front hinge mended. A few minor nicks and scuffs to boards, some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, joints just starting at ends, rear hinge cracked. Moderate toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, brief early annotations to a few passages. A nice copy of a scarce title. $1,500. * First edition, one of two issues from 1721. This title is unique in Jacob's prolific output because it discusses civil and canon law at length. The mention of "civilians, proctors, clergy, and gentlemen" in the subtitle is significant. Jacob, though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible, was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the Law would help create a more just society. Counting both issues, OCLC locates 9 copies in North American law libraries. Jefferson owned a copy of this book: Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1804. "Keill was one of the very important disciples gathered around Newton who transmitted his principles of philosophy to the scientific and intellectual community, thereby influencing the directions and emphases of Newtonianism. As one of the few around Newton with High Church patronage, Keill apparently tried to counter the Low Church influences of such spokesmen as Richard Bentley and William Whiston...Keill's work offered itself to Newton as an alternative Newtonian theology, different from that of the Low Church disciples. Newton's public acceptance of Keill's basic criticism against "world-making" was incorporated in 1706 in what was to be the famous Query of the Opticks." -Dictionary of Scientific Biography. The subject of the lectures includes "Of the Solar Spots. Of the Rotation of the Sun and Planets round their Axes: And of the fixed Stars", "Of the Motions of the three superior Planets, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and the Appearances arising from them", "Of the Projection of the Moon's Shadow on the Disk of the Earth", "Of Visible and Apparent Motion", "Of the Apparent Motion which arises from the Motion of the Spectator, or Observer", "Of the System of the World", "In which is proved that the System Explained in the former Lecture, is the true System of the World", "Of the Magnitude and Order of the fixed Stars.         [Magna Carta etc.] English Liberties, Or The Free-Born Subject's Inheritance: Containing Magna Charta . . . The Habeas Corpus Act, And Several Other Statutes

Boston: Printed by J. Franklin, for N. Buttolph, B. Eliot, and D. Henchman, 1721 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. This volume, one of the very first law books printed in colonial America, contains the first American printing of Magna Carta and other fundamental documents of individual liberty in Anglo-American law. Magna Carta has become "a sacred text, the nearest approach to an irrepealable 'fundamental statute' that England has ever had" (Pollock & Maitland). Benjamin Franklin helped to print this book as a 15-year old apprentice at his brother James's Boston printing shop. This was probably Franklin's first exposure to the principles of individual liberty to which he devoted much of his life. The book "contained the most important documents and statements in English history and law concerning liberty, property, and the rights of the individual ... Franklin knew its contents thoroughly" (Lemay). English Liberties "was less a practical handbook than a statement and record of the great legal and political principles which formed the proud inheritance of the British peoples at home and abroad. These matters were ever present in the minds of the colonists" (Wroth). Thomas Jefferson owned two editions of English Liberties, and the book was in many other libraries of the Founders. Original blind-tooled sheep over wooden boards, expertly rebacked. Some soiling and wear. Cloth case.

Oeuvres diverses de physique et de méchanique

Cinq parties en deux volumes in quarto (257x195 mm), (2),78,321,(1bl)/(2), [323]-876 pages. Portrait dépliant, 17 planches hors texte et 34 in texte. Broudin (d.1680), a Franciscan writer and lecturer, was born into the Bruodin (or MacBrody) family of Ballyhogan, Co. Clare, who were traditional chroniclers and genealogists to the O'Brien Kings of Thomond. After an education at the Irish college in Rome he moved in 1650 to Prague to join the Irish Franciscan community there. However in 1651 he left the Irish community and transferred to the Bohemian province where he lectured in theology and philosophy and occupied several influential positions. In 1675, accused of lobbying to become its provincial or head, he was expelled from the Bohemian province and rejoined the Irish province in Prague. He published there several theological and political works in the 1660s and 1670s of which Propugnaculum Catholicæ Veritatis (1669) is the most important. Bruodin's principal and polemical purpose in writing that massive work (circa 1200 pages) and extremely rare work much of which was devoted to Irish affairs and in particular to a spirited defence of Irish Catholicism, was to refute the writings of Thomas Carew, another Irish emigré priest who was based in Vienna and who had published a history of Ireland, Lyra sive Anacephalaeosis (1651 and second edition 1666). Carew by criticising Rinniccini, the critically influential papal nuncio to the Irish Confederate Catholics in the 1640s, had greatly offended many in the Irish emigré community. Bruodin supported Rinuccini's fundamentalist stance of non-accomodation with Ormond, the protestant Lord Lieutenant, and in the Propugnaculum attacked Carew's political views and the factual accuracy of the Lyra. A bitter and unedifying series of counter-attacking publications from both men ensued. This 1721 work consists of some passages from Propugnaculum Catholicæ Veritatis with some additions by the editor, one of the O'Neills. A reading of the 'Approbatio' to this book (where the author's name is spelt Brondin) seems to indicate that this is definitely a separate work, possibly previously unpublished, but Bradshaw said that it was "a garbled and falsified collection of certain passages from Propugnaculum .. with a few fresh things inserted by the editor". That editor was however the son of the exiled Phelim O'Neill so that this book, in either case, is a useful source on the current thinking of the leaders of the Irish emigré community, and any editorial deviation from the earlier version would be of special interest for that very reason. Our Latin is not good enough for more than speculation here, but whatever the truth in that regard this is a very rare book indeed. The bookplate is probably that of Lady Evelyn, a member of the Evelyn family, descendants of John Evelyn whose library was sold by Christie's in 1977 and which contained a number of books with the bookplate of a Lady Evelyn. Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper; light toning; Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675−1726) was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences when he was 27 years old and subsequently became the first person to receive the title Premier Géographe du Roi (principal geographer to the king). At the time de l'Isle was engaged in cartographic research, the prestige of a cartographer and the authority of his maps were gauged by the veracity of the cartographer's sources, i.e., the explorers and travelers who reported details of their travels to geographers and cartographers in Europe. Many of de l'Isle's maps were reissued by the publishing house of Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Coven in Amsterdam in their Atlas Nouveau, which was published in multiple editions, the earliest of which dates to 1730.
