      Nürnberg: Johann Andreä Endters, 1721 (actually 1731). First edition, later printing. 9 3/4 x 7 1/2. 30 leaves, 140 pages, 11 leaves. Most text printed in double columns, within a black border. A full page frontis of Ernesti's printing shop is followed by short histories of 8 famous printers from Coster to Plain, each with an engraved portrait; then a history of printing in Nuremberg with 4 more portraits. The first 44 pages comprise a type specimen, followed by lays-of-the-case for various alphabets and for music type. Then comes the manual with tables for format and imposition diagrams. The final 11 leaves are a German translation of Depositio cornuti typographici (a play performed by printing apprentices). This is lacking its title page, which was neatly excised. Bound in contemporary vellum spine & corners, brown & black speckled boards. Boards are heavily worn; last gathering is loose; one margin missing a piece; contents very good. Comprehensive printers' manual with "A valuable section on type specimens...more than 40 different types in 18 type sizes, an indication of the increase and variety of type at this period." (JPHS, D6). specimen of types, including Greek, Hebrew, exotic types, music, calendar cuts, medicine/apothecary symbols, and printers' flowers. In the Frontis, Ernesti's two presses are dated, respectively, 1440 and 1731--the year this was printed. In Yale's copy, the press is dated 1730. There was a second edition, with 20 more pages, in 1733. Provenance: Kaim, Vienna 1880.

Broudin (d.1680), a Franciscan writer and lecturer, was born into the Bruodin (or MacBrody) family of Ballyhogan, Co. Clare, who were traditional chroniclers and genealogists to the O'Brien Kings of Thomond. After an education at the Irish college in Rome he moved in 1650 to Prague to join the Irish Franciscan community there. However in 1651 he left the Irish community and transferred to the Bohemian province where he lectured in theology and philosophy and occupied several influential positions. In 1675, accused of lobbying to become its provincial or head, he was expelled from the Bohemian province and rejoined the Irish province in Prague. He published there several theological and political works in the 1660s and 1670s of which Propugnaculum Catholicæ Veritatis (1669) is the most important. Bruodin's principal and polemical purpose in writing that massive work (circa 1200 pages) and extremely rare work much of which was devoted to Irish affairs and in particular to a spirited defence of Irish Catholicism, was to refute the writings of Thomas Carew, another Irish emigré priest who was based in Vienna and who had published a history of Ireland, Lyra sive Anacephalaeosis (1651 and second edition 1666). Carew by criticising Rinniccini, the critically influential papal nuncio to the Irish Confederate Catholics in the 1640s, had greatly offended many in the Irish emigré community. Bruodin supported Rinuccini's fundamentalist stance of non-accomodation with Ormond, the protestant Lord Lieutenant, and in the Propugnaculum attacked Carew's political views and the factual accuracy of the Lyra. A bitter and unedifying series of counter-attacking publications from both men ensued. This 1721 work consists of some passages from Propugnaculum Catholicæ Veritatis with some additions by the editor, one of the O'Neills. A reading of the 'Approbatio' to this book (where the author's name is spelt Brondin) seems to indicate that this is definitely a separate work, possibly previously unpublished, but Bradshaw said that it was "a garbled and falsified collection of certain passages from Propugnaculum .. with a few fresh things inserted by the editor". That editor was however the son of the exiled Phelim O'Neill so that this book, in either case, is a useful source on the current thinking of the leaders of the Irish emigré community, and any editorial deviation from the earlier version would be of special interest for that very reason. Our Latin is not good enough for more than speculation here, but whatever the truth in that regard this is a very rare book indeed. The bookplate is probably that of Lady Evelyn, a member of the Evelyn family, descendants of John Evelyn whose library was sold by Christie's in 1977 and which contained a number of books with the bookplate of a Lady Evelyn. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675−1726) was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences when he was 27 years old and subsequently became the first person to receive the title Premier Géographe du Roi (principal geographer to the king). At the time de l'Isle was engaged in cartographic research, the prestige of a cartographer and the authority of his maps were gauged by the veracity of the cartographer's sources, i.e., the explorers and travelers who reported details of their travels to geographers and cartographers in Europe. Many of de l'Isle's maps were reissued by the publishing house of Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Coven in Amsterdam in their Atlas Nouveau, which was published in multiple editions, the earliest of which dates to 1730. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and prolific French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century, in the service of the French Hydrographical Office. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King. Bellin was responsible for an enormous output of charts and maps. In a large folio format, he issued a volume of sea-charts of France, the Neptune François, and several sea-atlases of the World, including the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Française. These large charts were amongst the best of the period and continued being reissued throughout the second half of the eighteenth century. In smaller format, he issued the Petit Atlas Maritime (1764),which contained 580 detailed charts, as well as maps to illustrate l'Abbe Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages (1746-1757). Bellin also produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps, particularly reflecting continuing discoveries and political events in the Americas. Essa comprende l'avviso de "lo Stampatore ai lettori", la "Vita di Messer Benedetto Varchi, scritta dall'Abate Don Silvano Razzi: all'Illustre, e Rev. Signor Bernardo Medici", seguita dalla dedica "All'Illustrissimo, ed Eccelentissimo Signor Suoi, e Padrone Osservandissimo, Cosimo Medici Duca secondo di Firenze, Benedetto Varchi"; quindi il "Proemio" e, infine, preceduta da una tavola a doppia pagina con il "Ramo delle famiglia Medici", ha inizio la Storia ("Della Fiorentina Storia di Mess. He produced architectural views of places around the world intended as vues d?optiques, which were published in various places during the last half of the 18th century, including Paris, Augsburg and London. He was also known for his portraits.Probst came from an extended family of printers, whose businesses can all be traced back to the publishing firm of Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724). After Wolff's death his firm was continued as ?Wolff?s Heirs? by his son-in-law Johann Balthasar Probst (1689-1750). After Probst?s death in 1750, his descendants divided the business and published under their own imprints: Johann Friedrich Probst (1721-1781), Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) and Johann Michael Probst. Another part of the Wolff-Probst firm was acquired by the Augsburg publisher Johann Georg Hertel (1700-1775), whose son Georg Leopold Hertel had married a sister of the Probsts. In the next generation, Georg Mathäus Probst (d. 1788), son of Georg Balthasar Probst, also became an engraver of portraits and views.

Su contenido no podía ser más polémico ya que, en la primera parte, se debate si el Papa y la Iglesia tienen capacidad de excomulgar, en qué casos y si la excomunón puede recurrirse. Si tiene más autoridad el Papa o el Concilio. Si un príncipe o una república libre pueden ser destituidos de sus estados mediante excomunión; si la excomunión es compatible con la libertad eclesiástica y si esta libertad es solo de la Iglesia o se extiende a sus pastores. Si un príncipe puede exigirle diezmos al clero, si tiene derecho de por sí a juzgar a eclesiasticos criminales y, por fin, si existe la infalibilidad papal. En todo el debate son múltiples las ocasiones en que se trae a colación el Concilio de Trento. Unas veces para criticar sus decretos, no pocas para criticar al Papa por ser el primero en no acatarlos. Ses poésies sont inspirées par Chateaubriand et Lamartine. Il était l'ami du philosophe A. Blanc de Saint-Bonnet. Seconde édition imprimée à Carpentras quelques mois après la rarissime édition originale marseillaise saisie dès sa parution. C'est une relation détaillée et fidèle de l'effroyable épidémie de peste qui frappa Marseille et la Provence en 1720. C'est la dernière grande épidémie de peste enregistrée en France. "Le Grand-Saint-Antoine", un bateau en provenance du Levant semble être à l'origine de l'épidémie. La peste s'étend rapidement et entraîne près 40 000 décès sur 90 000 habitants, puis en Provence où elle fait près de 100 000 victimes sur une population de 400 000 habitants. L'enlèvement des cadavres du quartier de la Tourette par les galériens de l'Arsenal, mobilisés à cet effet sous les ordres du chevalier Roze constitue un fait majeur de ce tragique évènement. Marseille n'est pas la seule cité atteinte par l'épidémie qui touche également Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, puis Allauch, Cassis, Aubagne, Alès et Avignon. Coste estime que "cette relation constitue l'une des trois sources essentielles pour l'historiographe de la peste de Marseille" ¶ cf. J. Each of The Canterbury Tales is illustrated with an engraving of the pilgrim and throughout, there are very pretty headpieces, tailpieces, fleurons and initials. Contemporary panelled calf, decorated in blind, recently and expertly rebacked. Spine lavishly decorated and lettered ("Chaucer's Works") in gilt, six raised bands and seven compartments. The contents are very good. The front pastedown has the armorial bookplate of Lord Kennet of the Dene. Kennet, has made pencil notes in the margins in a few places where he has taken exception to a biographical note or an editorial decision. In particular "Certaine Balades" are noted to be "Not Chaucer" or "Why Here?" and he flatly contradicts Urry's claim that Chaucer was at Cambridge and disputes the date of birth which Urry gives as 1328 (it is 1343). He has also written (in pencil) on the ffep a note listing those works in the book not by Chaucer. This is an excellent, fresh, tight copy of Urry's celebrated and perhaps notorious edition of Chaucer which was the first to use Roman rather than Gothic type. The three added stories are The Coke's Tale of Gamelyn; The Merchant's Second Tale, or the History of Beryn; and The Adventure of the Pardoner and Tapster at the Inn at Canterbury.Before the early century, Chaucer scholarship and biography was incomplete and haphazard. Urry's edition was the first that took all published versions of Chaucer's work and all available manuscripts and collated the various versions to establish what was thought to be Chaucer's intent. It was also one of the first full biographies of Chaucer and remained the standard "Life" until Sir Harris Nicolas's biography in 1844. Urry received the license to publish this edition in 1714, but died before completing it. Thomas Ainsworth took on the project, but also died. Timothy and William Thomas finished it, with Timothy assembling the preface explaining the scholarship and the glossary "explaining the obsolete and difficult words in Chaucer." This frequent passing of the editorial baton clearly affected the quality of the work and Urry's edition has long been criticised for its somewhat fast and loose approach to the texts. However, this an important book in the history of Chaucer scholarship and this copy is a particularly fine example.

De eerste twee delen met het grote lofdicht op Haarlem en alle bekende en veel gespeelde blijspelen en kluchten zijn een herdruk van de uitgave uit 1721 bij de weduwe van Barend Visscher in Amsterdam, het derde deel verscheen eerst 30 jaar later en het vierde postuum in 1760, tegelijk met de herdruk van de eerste twee delen, bij zijn vriend, de Haarlemse uitgever-boekhandelaar Jan Bosch (ca. 1710-1780?). Dat vierde deel bevat het intrigerende, maar zelden gespeelde toneelspel 'Spiegel der vaderlandsche kooplieden' (ca. 1756), volgens Kees Smit een beklemmend en realistisch stuk waarin Langendijk een hele generatie kooplieden hekelt. De opvoering ervan begin 1786 door het Haarlemse gezelschap 'Leerzaam vermaak' is volgens Simon Koster de première geweest van het stuk. Opmerkelijk zijn de twee verschillende titelvignetten: op de titelpagina van het eerste en vierde deel staat het 'E silva litterae'-vignet van drukker Bosch (met een gezicht op Haarlem en L.J. Coster), op die van het tweede en derde deel een vignet met Fumus gloria mundi. Dat is de zinspreuk die de (door Langendijk gewaardeerde) burleske dichter Focquenbroch een halve eeuw vroeger al voor zijn werk plaatste. Dit vignet is gegraveerd door een andere goede vriend van Langendijk, de tekenaar-graveur Jan Wandelaar (1692-1759)."

      London: Printed for William and John Innys,, 1721. The Third Edition, Corrected. Octavo (195 x 122 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco label to spine, boards tooled in blind with floriate motifs and lozenge pattern to central panels, edges sprinkled red. With the final leaf of advertisements. 12 engraved folding plates. Bookplate of High Legh Library to front pastedown. Joints and spine ends skilfully repaired, a few marks to boards, occasional foxing to contents, overall a bright, clean copy. Third edition of Newton's major work on his corpuscular or emission theory of light, "a work of great authority" (PMM) both on its first publication in 1704 and in the present day. "The Opticks of 1704–6, generalizing the message of the Principia, issued a manifesto of his new programme. The mechanical philosophy with its imagined mechanisms of imagined particles was out. Forces mathematically defined, explaining observed motions in a quantitatively precise manner, formed the centrepiece of Newtonian science. Modern science has shaped itself accordingly. The same Opticks also contained at the end the first full papers in mathematics that Newton made public" (ODNB). As Babson notes, this is a reprint of the second edition (1717-18) with a few corrections and one additional passage referring to Noah and his sons.

With engraved frontispiece and title-page printed in red and black. Recased in 18th-century vellum, later endpapers, preserving the original publisher's printed wrappers.

      Buisman 1029; STCN (2 copies); Ter Horst no. X; Waller 745. First and only edition of Kersteman's extremely rare "histoire scandaleuse", describing the flagrant life of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of Louis XV. The book is described on the title-page and in the preface as a defence against the slanderous biographies published by the French and English. This apparently couldn't convince the French ambassador Louis Augustin d'Affry, who had, immediately after publication, destroyed the full run after buying all available copies for their full price, to defend Madame de Pompadour her good name. With modern bookplate on pastedown. The engraved frontispiece is possibly transferred from another work and has a small restored tear in the margins. Faint dampstain in the last quire and a few spots throughout. Good untrimmed copy. The original wrappers soiled, but the vellum very good.
