THE LIFE AND STRANGE SURPRIZING ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, OF YORK, MARINER: WHO LIVED EIGHT AND TWENTY YEARS ALL ALONE IN AN UN- INHABITED ISLAND ON THE COAST OF AMERICA, NEAR THE MOUTH OF THE GREAT RIVER OROONOQUE; HAVING BEEN CAST ON SHORE BY SHIPWRECK, WHEREIN ALL THE MEN PERISHED BUT HIMSELF. WITH AN ACCOUNT OF HOW HE WAS AT LAST AS STRANGELY DELIVER'D BY PYRATES . [with:] THE FARTHER ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE; BEING THE SECOND AND LAST PART OF HIS LIFE, AND OF THE STRANGE SURPRIZING ACCOUNTS OF HIS TRAVELS ROUND THREE PARTS OF THE GLOBE [with:] SERIOUS REFLECTIONS DURING THE LIFE AND SUPRISING ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE: WITH HIS VISION OF THE ANGELICK WORLD

Printed for W. Taylor, at the Ship and Black- Swan ., London 1720 - Three volumes. [4],364pp.plus engraved frontis; [8],373,[11]pp. plus engraved folding frontis map; [16],270,84,[2]pp. plus engraved folding frontis. Octavos. Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked and recornered to style, with the original gilt backstrips laid down, marbled edges and endsheets. Two tasteful bookplates in each volume on front pastedown, pencil notes erased from one terminal binder's blank, expert reinforcement on verso of one fold to frontis map in second volume, some faint spots to B1-2 in the second volume and one small spot on title of same volume, affecting one letter, but a very good set. Third edition of the first work, Hutchins' issue 3c; first edition 2nd state (with advert on A4v) of the second work; and first edition of the third (state with catchword 'The' on p. 270). A quite respectable set of one of the most celebrated of all 18th century English novels and an essential text in the literature of the imaginary voyage, including the two supplementary narratives. The first work was immediately popular and went through four editions within the four months after publication; the second also struck a chord with the public, with a second edition appearing the same year. The third part, however, languished and was not reprinted by Taylor, and its appearance in the subsequent, often abridged, editions of the full narrative is generally fragmentary. Crusoe's ADVENTURES was both pirated in its time and imitated, serving as the progenitor of the subset of imaginary voyages christened "Robinsonades." It established the relative fortune of its publisher, though not of its author, who sold his interests outright to Taylor. HUTCHINS, pp. 74-8; 97-112; and 122-8. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 41. PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 180.

Jeweils EA. - Beat Fidel Zurlauben (1720-1799), genoss eine hervorragende Erziehung in Radolfzell, Mantes-la-Jolie (Ile-de-France) und 1732-1737 am Collège des Quatre-Nations in Paris. Er trat 1735 als Fähnrich in franz. Dienste.

1720 - 1 engraved dedication/explanation leaf (3 3/8 x 4 7/16 inches), 52 engraved cards (each 3 3/8 x 2 3/16 inches), each backed on 19th-century card. All contained within a single early 20th-century brown straight-grained morocco slipcase modelled as a book and titled in gilt on 'spine' Provenance: Later ownership notation on verso of each card A very rare complete set of early 18th-century playing cards, intended as an illustration of heraldry in France. Later issue of this ornamental set of numbered playing cards in the French suit system (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades), after a presumed first of 1712. The set as a whole is intended to offer a simple explanation and illustration of the science of Heraldry, with each of the cards featuring one or more shields. These shields are used as a demonstration of a particular heraldic term, but also include a caption naming the French family whose arms they represent. A number of the cards are enlivened by one or more figures. This set is likely to be from one of three known issues of the Carte Methodique recorded by the Cary Collection at Yale University. In each of the three known sets, the imprint of the publisher appears printed on the whole sheet of cards. For the present set, this information was lost when the sheet was cut to form the present fifty-three separate cards. Cary Collection, FRA sheet 177,197; GER sheet 242; Albertina 1974, 3, p.167; S.         The Works of Plato Abridg'd.

London: For A. Bell, J. Darby, A. Bettesworth [& 8 others in London],, 1720. With an account of his life, philosophy, morals, and politicks. Together with a translation of his choicest dialogues, Viz. 1. Of Human Nature. 2. Of Prayer. 3. Of Wisdom. 4. Of Holiness. 5. What one ought to do. 6. Immortality of the Soul. 7. Valour. 8. Philosophy. In two volumes. Illustrated with notes. By M. Dacier. Translated from the French, by several hands. The Second Edition, Corrected. 2 volumes, duodecimo (162 x 92 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, spines numbered in gilt else plain, red speckled edges. Portrait frontispiece to each volume. Contemporary bookplate of James Horton on reverse of title pages, price of volumes (5 shillings) written in contemporary hand on pastedowns. Spines slightly chipped at ends, front joints cracking, very minor stain on each rear cover. Overall a very good set. Second collected edition in English. The first edition, published in 1701, was the first substantial collection of the works of Plato to appear in the English language. On its first appearance, it was the first publication in English of the first and second Alcibiades, Euthyphron, Theges, Laches, Protagoras, and second appearances of the Apology and Phaedo, which were first published in 1675. It was translated, not from the original Greek, but from the 1699 French edition of André Dacier. The direct translation of Plato into English occurred remarkably late in comparison with other classical authors and it was not until the translations of Sydenham and Taylor (published in 1804) that English scholars were provided with a near-complete translation from the Greek. The Dacier editions (in French and English) remained the standard text throughout the 18th century, with three more editions following in 1739, 1749 and 1772. The text of the present second edition followed the first with some corrections.

Prijs: Euro 4.250,-.

        Imperii Persici.

Artist: Homann Johann Babtiste ca ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 58; - description: map of the Persian Empire; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724), Nuremberg, was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Published by Pieter Van der Aa, was also parte of the Dapper's travel. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example.

        Pharmacopoeia Londinensis

Boston: John Allen for Nicholas Boone .., 1720. Culpeper, Nicholas (1616-54). Pharmacopoeia Londinensis; or, the London dispensatory further adorned by the studies and collections of the fellows now living, of the said college. 8vo. [24], 305, [39]pp. Boston: John Allen for Nicholas Boone. . . Daniel Henchman. . . and John Edwards, 1720. 175 x 113 mm. American blind-tooled sheep ca. 1720, spine cracked, inner hinges repaired, some rubbing and edgewear. Margins of first few leaves trimmed touching some text, some toning as is usual for American books of this era, but very good. Ownership signatures of James Simpson (dated April 30, 1777) and William Whipple (dated 1750). First American Edition. This 1720 Boston edition of Culpeper's Pharmacopoeia Londinensis enjoys the triple distinction of being the first herbal, the first pharmacopoeia, and the first full-length medical book published in the American colonies. It is the earliest American medical book possibly obtainable today. This copy is also remarkable for its original American blind-tooled sheep binding. This is also probably one of the earliest American bindings that one could expect to obtain today. The only known predecessors of our edition are the unique surviving copy of Thomas Thatcher's Brief Rule to Guide the Common People of New England. . . in the Small Pocks or Measles (Boston, 1677; described as "a single sheet of paper"), and a 1708 Boston reprint of The English Physician, ascribed to Culpeper on the title-page, but most probably only as an attempt to capitalize on his famous name. The 1708 edition has been essentially unobtainiable since the 19th century. The American edition of Culpeper's work enjoyed a wide popularity in the colonies, perhaps because of its Puritan slant and its bias toward the household treatment of illness. Culpeper's writings show a genuine interest in providing health care for the poor: his remedies contained only cheap, readily obtainable English herbs, and on his deathbed, he stated that he "never gave a patient two medicines where one would serve." It was this populist attitude toward medical care that had prompted Culpeper in 1649 to publish his English translation of the Pharmacopoeia Londiniensis, an act that earned him the enmity of London's medical establishment.         CHRISTIAN V's DANSKE LOV.

1720 1720 - Afskrift ved Jacob Bircherod ca. 1720. 8vo. 150 s., hvoraf 129 beskrevne. Indbundet i samtidigt velbevaret helpergament. Knuds Kirke.

N.n., n.pl. 1720 - (The great mirror of folly, showing the rise, progress and downfall of the bubble in stocks in the year 1720). N.n., n.pl. 1720. One volume in folio; pp. (2), 25, (1), 52, 31, 8, 9; title in red and black, 74 plates (including frontispiece) most of which are double-page or folding, 1 plate is in duplicate, verso of frontispiece repaired, a few plates frayed at fore-edge, one plate shaved at fore-edge. Contemporary calf, raised bands, spine very skillfully re-backed using the original spine strip, corners a bit bumped, spine gilt in compartments with gilt lettering, gilt border and gilt panel on covers with crown and drawer-handle tool at each corner, central gilt ornament, text pages with some browning or foxing, plates with light browning or foxing in outer margin, in all a very good copy. First edition of the famous Great Mirror of Folly. This volume is a significant contribution to economic literature. Its bulk is made up largely of satirical plates, but its text also embraces the charters of important companies which were floated in various Dutch cities during the period of the bubble fever. According to Arthur Cole’s excellent survey The Great Mirror of Folly neither the textual material nor the engraved prints are always identical in individual issues, nor do they appear in the same sequence within the volume. In a sense, each copy of the Tafereel is unique. (Cole, p. 1f) Sperling 205, Kress 3211, Goldsmiths’ 5879, Sauer 5/1968: 1468 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 47 x 59; - description: map of Europe; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

Free Thoughts on Religion, the Church, and National Happiness.

London: printed, and sold by T. Jauncy, and J. Roberts,, 1720. Octavo (191 x 115 mm). 20th-century panelled calf, spine gilt to compartments with red label lettered in gilt, panels ruled and roll-tooled in blind with blind-stamped cornerpieces, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, red silk pagemarker. Bookplate to pastedown. Very slight rubbing to covers, very slight creasing to some pages. An excellent copy. First edition, variant state with page xix misnumbered ixx, without known priority. Free Thoughts was Bernard Mandeville's (1670–1733) most substantial work to date. Borrowing heavily from Pierre Bayle, and in fact transcribing substantial passages, Mandeville's treatise provides a defence of religious toleration and constitutional government. Mandeville espouses a moderately whiggish position, and it is a work which proved far less controversial than his other treatises attacking Christian ethics, defending brothels and opposing charity schools. The book was reissued in 1721 and 1723, with new editions in 1729 and 1731, and was translated into French, Dutch and German.
