The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.Light toning, very good. 253, [2 blank], 100pp. Amsterdam, Jean Frederic Bernard, The Recueil is likely the first collected edition of official documents relating to the famous ?Compagnie de l'Occident ou de la Louisiane,? later the ?Compagnie des Indies,? under the leadership of John Law. It consists of two parts. The first and larger part of this work consists of the collected Arrests. of the French monarchy relating to the Compagnie D'Occident from the granting of the concession to Crozat and the Compagnie in 1712 up through November 1719. These decrees are of the greatest importance for the history of the venture of the Compagnie in the Mississippi Valley, and this is their first collected appearance, preceded only by the extremely rare individual publications as royal decrees. Besides the Louisiana section, Nicholas Jeremie's Relationdu Detroitet de la Bai de Hudson, appears in the second part here for the first time. The map shows the northeastern part of North America, including Hudson Bay, and is titled, ?Les Cotes de la Virginie, les Detroits de Forbisher et de Hudson.? Also in the second part is an account of Martin Frobisher's voyages to China and Japan of 1576-78. SABIN 68419. HOWES R107 (?aa?). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mappemonde a l'usage du Roy Par Guillaume Delisle Premier-Geographe de S.M.

1720 - 43 x 66.5 cm.

About the author: Johann Heinrich Michaelis (1668-1738) was a Protestant theologian and Orientalist at Halle where he was a key figure in Halle's founding generation of scholars in biblical, Oriental, and Slavic studies. A close associate of Francke, Michaelis was a Pietist who, like Francke, was deeply committed to biblical philology and the study of Hebrew (from Wikipedia). * "Founded around 1700 by a group of German Lutherans known as Pietists, the Halle Orphanotrophei (Orphanage) became the institutional headquarters of a universal seminar that still stands largely intact today. It was the base of an educational, charitable, and scientific community and consisted of an elite school for the sons of noblemen; schools for the sons of artisans, soldiers, and preachers; a hospital; an apothecary; a bookshop; a botanical garden; and a cabinet of curiosity containing architectural models, naturalia, and scientific instruments. Yet, its reputation as a Pietist enclave inhabited largely by young people has prevented the organization from being taken seriously as a kind of scientific academy - even though, Kelly Joan Whitmer shows, this is precisely what it was." (For more information, see Kelly Joan Whitmer's "The Halle Orphanage as Scientific Community: Observation, Eclecticism, and Pietism in the Early Enlightenment" (2015) published by The University of Chicago Press).          Autograph letter signed to an unnamed "Monsieur", thanking him for his good wishes upon his appointment as Contrôleur general of finance.

Paris: 14 January 1720 - Single folio sheet (317 x 207 mm). Sometime folded, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. Docketed in the upper left hand corner. Lightly spotted, a few small marginal chips; in very good condition. A fine example of the famous speculator John Law's signature, appended to an autograph letter, written in a neat cursive secretarial hand, to an unknown "Monsieur", thanking him for his complimentary letter following Law's appointment to the post of controller-general of finance of France. On 5 January 1720, John Law was appointed controller-general of the finances of France and "in April received the more prestigious title of superintendent (surintendant des finances, a title not used since 1661 and never again to be used in France). In the course of April and May 1720 he was effectively chief minister and minister of finance, a sort of latter-day Cardinal Mazarin and Nicolas Fouquet combined; but on 27 May, the first crisis of his 'financial system', he was temporarily dismissed from office and threatened with imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris. Yet the eclipse was only brief: he returned to office on 2 June with the additional responsibilities of the superintendence of French commerce, the director-generalship of the Banque Royale, and a councillorship of state with a seat in the council of regency. With the collapse of his system Law was forced to offer his resignation on 9 December 1720, and he went into exile abroad, first to the Austrian Netherlands on 17 or 18 December. He returned to England, though his time there was not untroubled. The death of the régent in 1723 wrecked his hopes for a restoration in France and he moved on to Italy two years later with a commission from the king of England to any other prince or state 'not for use but for protection' (DNB). He died from pneumonia at Venice in comparative poverty on 21 March 1729, having received the Catholic last rites. The collapse of his system had brought down his own personal finances, which though very considerable in 1720 (a letter from Law to the régent, dated 1 March 1721, talked of his shareholdings at that time being worth nearly 100 millions) had been inflated by paper assets which in the end proved worthless." (ODNB). Docketed in the top left hand corner "M. Lass. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Pythagorae Carmen Aureum: Graece & Latine, cum analysi critica & ethica, imitationibus item graeco-latinis. II., Casp. Barlaei Orationesii Patheticae, una Elegiaca, altera Epica, cum analysi rhetorica, Opera & studio M. Joann. Christiani Knauth.

        Antique Map-USA-NEW MEXICO-TEXAS-FLORIDA-CARIBBEAN-GULF-Homann Heirs-c. 1720

      - Antique Map, titled: 'Regni Mexicani seu Nova Hispaniae Ludovicianus, N. Angliae, Carolinae, Virginiae et Pensylvaniae ( ).' - This superb map covers the region from the Great Lakes and Nova Scotia through Central America, the Caribbean and Venezuela, and from New Mexico (naming Taos and Santa Fe) to the eastern seaboard. The map is based largely on Delisle's map of 1703 (Carte du Mexique et de la Floride), depicting the social, political, and economic outcomes from the War of the Spanish Succession, also known as Queen Anne's War. The British colonies are shown confined east of the Appalachians and extending south almost to St. Augustine, deep into Spanish-claimed territory. The map itself is filled with settlement place names, Indian tribes and villages. In present-day Texas, Corpus Christi and El Paso (el passo) are noted. Sea routes of treasure fleets from Vera Cruz and Cartagena to Havana and Spain are outlined. Richly embellished, a fine title cartouche depicts two native figures with items to trade, such as hides and blankets. In the Atlantic, there is a large scene of extensive gold mining operations, with Indians bringing their treasures to fill the Europeans' chest. Off the Pacific coast of Mexico is yet another opulent engraving of a raging sea battle, reminiscent of the battles fought in Queen Anne's War. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'.
