A New and Exact Plan of Ye City of London and suburbs thereof, With the addition of the New Buildings, Churches &c. to this present year. (Not extant in any other) Laid down in such a method that in an Instant may easily be found any Place contain'd therein.

Printed & Sold by Tho: Bowles next to the Chapter-house St. Paul?Äôs Church Yard; Sold by John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill, London, 1719 - A city of meat eaters 610 by 1475mm (24 by 58 inches). Engraved map on three sheets, joined, parishes picked out in outline colour, extending north to south from Clerkenwell to Southwark, and west to east from Buckingham House to Stepney, list of streets and squares to left and right margins, trimmed to neatline, a few nicks and tears and some minor loss, skilfully repaired. Howgego 63 (1). Large and detailed plan of London. The map bears grid lines for ease of reference, the major public buildings such as Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham House, and the Tower of London are represented as birds-eye views. The text upon the map gives the extent of London as "7500 Geometric paces, that is above 7 English Miles and a half" from west to east and "2500 paces, or 2 miles and a half" from north to south. There are about 5000 streets. The number of houses is calculated to be 110,000. The population is guessed at "by what is eaten": "There were in one Year, when it was less by two thirds [ie. in the mid seventeenth century], 67500 Beefs, 10 times as many Sheep, Besides Poultry &c. also every Year is brought into the River 400,000 at least Charldon of Coales". Also the number of "Buryings" was said to number 26,000 per year. The amount of ale and beer produced is said to be 20,000 barrels. Bowles acknowledges the source of these numbers as Sir William Petty (1623-1687), who through some crude statistical analysis calculated the population in the mid-seventeenth century. He estimated that there were 115,846 families and 695,076 souls; more than Paris, Rome, Rouen or Amsterdam, which were said to have some 500,000 souls. To the left of the text is a list of watermen and hackney carriage rates.Scale: 11 inches to 1 statute mile.

Chez L'Honoré & Châtelain, Amsterdam 1719 - An important and fascinating map of Canada from Châtelain's celebrated 'Atlas Historique' This very finely engraved and epistemologically interesting map was one of the most important maps of Canada printed during its time, and was included in Châtelain's Atlas Historique. It is largely derived from Guillaume de L'Isle's famous 1703 map of Canada, and the geography of the Great Lakes, eastern Canada and New England is quite accurate for the time. The numerous trading posts and missions of New France and the major towns of the adjacent British colonies are labeled. The area around Hudson's Bay is shown to be inhabited by native tribes referred to as the "Christinaux or Kilistinons," while Labrador is home to the "Eskimaux." Interestingly, the map features a number of notes specifically referring to the names of explorers and the dates in which they discovered certain places, such as the reference to 'Nouveau Danemarc', discovered by the Danish explorer Jan Munk in 1619. The depiction of the upper Mississippi and Ohio basins is also quite detailed, noting the position of the French fort of 'St. Louis' or 'Crèvecouer' near the present-day site of Peoria, Illinois. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the map is its portrayal of the "Rivière Longue," one of the most sensational and enduring cartographic misconceptions ever devised. This imaginary river was reported to flow from the 'Pays des Gnacsitares' in the far west, promising the best route through the interior of the continent, supposedly placing one within close reach of the Pacific Ocean. It is a product of the imagination of the Baron Lahontan, an entertaining and roguish French adventurer, whose best-selling travel narrative Nouveaux voyages dans l'Amérique septentrionale (1703) convinced many of the world's greatest intellects of the existence of this mythical waterway. The text, 'Remarque Historique' that fills the northwestern part of the map describes the history of New France from the days of Jacques Cartier to contemporary times. Kershaw, Early Printed Maps of Canada II:334, plate 215. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition. Sheet size: 18 x 21 5/8 inches.

South America: With federal remarks. Dedicated to the Earl of Sunderland

London 1719 - Herman Moll (1654-1732) “South America: With federal remarks. Dedicated to the Earl of Sunderland.” From The World described; or a New and Correct Sett of Maps. London, 1719 Engraving with original hand color Sheet size: 40 1/2" x 25"; 30" x 46 ¼" framed Herman Moll came to England from the Netherlands shortly after 1680 and became one of the most prolific cartographers of the first part of the eighteenth century. Early in his career, he used his skills as an engraver to obtain work from the cartographer Moses Pitt, among others. He had a knack for making interesting friends and involving himself in unusual projects, as he provided maps for Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. In 1689 he established his own London shop, and maps of a uniquely Moll character began to appear during Queen Anne’s reign. His individual style of mapmaking grew increasingly more distinct as his career progressed. Moll’s maps are noted for their elaborate design, clarity of lettering and numerous legends on the map’s face. These lengthy writings give historical information about the geography, inhabitants, and overall particulars of the area shown. His impressive body of maps and atlases constitute some of the finest examples of early British cartography and summation of British knowledge at the time. Each is beautifully rendered and has great historical significance. Very few English mapmakers had made a name for themselves in the 16th and 17th centuries, because Dutch cartographers were generally so far ahead of their competition that challenging them seemed an insurmountable task. In the early 18th century, however, British cartography began a resurgence and Britain eventually displaced Holland as the most advanced map-producing nation. This is due in large measure to Britain’s role in colonization, which by this time far superseded that of the Dutch and most other nations. With government surveyors working to chart colonies and potential colonies in distant lands, the British cartographers had a degree of access to geographical information that their foreign competitors did not. Another factor in the revival of British cartography was the immigration of Dutch mapmakers like Hermann Moll, who gained his expertise in his native country, and then applied that knowledge and experience to the sophisticated geographical information he was now privy to in Britain. With respect to accuracy and beauty, his maps were among the most impressive to be produced in the early 18th century, during the dynamic era of the British Enlightenment, and served as models for his fellow cartographers in Britain. In the early 1700’s, Herman Moll along with a group of peers decided to explore an idea they called the South Sea development. What they envisioned was an expansion of British trade to South America as well as the eastern Pacific Ocean. Throughout the years Moll printed several maps that publicized the location, which in part added to the interest in the area. In 1719, he produced this map of South America with each country carefully outlined and distinguished by various colors. In addition, Moll included certain annotations around the coast of the continent. Included within the map is an interesting detail located in the bottom left corner. It is a depiction of a location called Potosi, a region that received a wonderful gift from nature: an incredible amount of silver located in a moderate sized mountain in what we now call southern Bolivia. Having only mined the silver when it was necessary, it came as a shock to the natives when the Spanish colonizers began to ravage the resources. By the middle of the 1500s, the silver became a magnet for settlers looking for money. Potosi, a word meaning high place, became synonymous with wealth and splendor in the modern world. As a result, Hermann Moll included the location on his map hoping to entice the public into the interest in South America.

A. vielfach umgearbeitet worden ist. (ADB) 1100 gr. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Annales sex regum Angliae.

Oxonii Oxford: e Theatro Sheldoniano 1719 - 8vo. (26), 347, (1, 32 index followed by postscript) pp. Late 18th century dark green straight grain morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panels with ornate decoration to the other compartments, gilt tooled rosettes with flower and leaf stems to the corners of each board, the ciphered initials "P.S." to the upper cover and the motto "Vincit et Patitur" to the lower board in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, mustard coloured endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait. Binding slightly rubbed, some very light spotting to the front and rear leaves, else a most handsome copy. The binding has sometime been attributed to the noted binder Roger Payne, his name pencilled on one of the front endpapers though nowhere is the binding signed. Certainly the binding has the appearance of his work and, specifically, the cornerpieces are very reminiscent of devices that he used.Nicholas Trivet (c.1257 – c.1334) was a Dominican friar and scholar. Manuscripts exist of various works by him, though this is one of the few that subsequently ever made it into print. The work chronicles the history of the early Plantagenet dynasty, from King Stephen to Edward I. This edition is edited by Anthony Hall, an Oxford scholar who had previously edited a 1709 edition of the work of the English antiquarian John Leland "Commentarii de Scriptoribus Britannicis". His postscript at the rear of the volume indicates his intention to publish the continuation of the manuscript from which he was working, the "Annalium Continuatio" appeared 3 years later.

The map, which is primarily based on Nicholas De Fer's 1713 map, focuses on North and South America, which occupy the center, but also includes the entire Pacific with the East Indies, Japan, and Australia as well as all of the Atlantic, with a large portion of Europe and Africa presented. Grandiose and elaborately engraved, it is of wall-chart proportions, and it includes a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the Western Hemisphere. Interestingly, even at this relatively late date, California is depicted as an island. However, Châtelain's depiction of this geographical curiosity shows uncertainty, as can be seen by the faintly drawn eastern coast of the land mass. In fact, Châtelain even includes an annotation that states that many modern thinkers believe California to be a part of the mainland. In a similar manner, the coastline of Australia is convoluted and the coast of the western half of Tierra del Fuego is also lightly drawn. Nonetheless, the map provides a wealth of cartographic information in great detail, including the correct depiction of the Great Lakes and a relatively accurate course for the Mississippi River. The paths of the major voyages in the Pacific, including those of Magellan and LeMaire, are noted and medallion portraits of celebrated explorers from the Age of Discovery are shown. The highly decorative cartouches and splendid vignettes are meant to give a picture of native flora and fauna as well as of the customs and lifestyles of the indigenous people in the Americas, subjects which were both unusual and enticing to Europeans at that time. There are vignettes illustrating sugar mills, mining, Native Americas hunting and fishing, as well as a more exotic, titillating depiction of an Aztec pyramid and human sacrifice. In the space between Asia and the Americas is an elaborate view of a beaver colony in Niagara Falls, and the Northern Atlantic region includes a vignette of cod fisheries in Newfoundland, illustrating the two main products at the center of trade in the New World. Two very involved cartouches on the lower sheet include inset maps and city plans of Acapulco, Panama, Vera Cruz, and other New World cities, and there are views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Cape of Good Hope..

1719 - Paris, 1719. Dissected and laid on linen, total 890 x 790mm. Splits in folds of linen. A rare map of the Aragon region, once owned by Honoré Charles Michel Joseph Reille, Marshal of France, who campaigned in the area during the Peninsula War. Although it was originally published during the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-20), in which Britain, France, Austria and the Dutch Republic rounded on Philip V of Spain because of his expansionist plans in Italy, it was still an important map during the Peninsula War. Reille (1775-1860), was an extremely important figure in Napoleon Bonaparte's army: he was Commander of the Army of Portugal at Vitoria during the Peninsula War, and commanded the II Corp (25,000 men) at Waterloo. He was later made a Maréchal of France and is buried in Pére Lachaise cemetary in Paris in the tomb of his father-in-law, Maréchal Messéna.

No place, 1719. 20pp. Dom Jean Liron (who died in 1749) was a benedictine monk of the Congregation of St. Maur. His work is placed exactly between the Bibliothèque françoise by François de La Croix and Antoine Du Verdier (both published in 1585), and l'Histoire littéraire de la France that was to be published from 1733 to 1736. Initially Liron wanted to write a Bibliothèque générale des auteurs de France. However, understanding that it would be impossible for a single person to complete this he decided instead to write a series of bibliothèques regionales and started with the Diocèse of Chartres. A next volume, the Bibliothèque d'Anjou was only published long after his death, in 1897. After the general introduction Liron explains in detail his method of working. This section ends with a catalogue of works which he used for writing this work, which gives an idea what bibliography was like in the beginning of the 18th century. Each entry is both biographical and bibliographical. The entries are chronologically ordered and often in the first entries Liron mentions sources that only exist in manuscript. Liron deserves an eminent place in the history of bibliography but is lacking in Besterman (Les Débuts de la Bibliographie Méthodique) and in Malclès (La Bibliography). However, he is cited in Besterman's A world of bibliography (1230). The inserted (anonymous) letter is an attack on Liron and his work. A contemporary hand on the titlepage gives the name of the real author.
