- "Bernoulli's criticism of Taylor's 'Methodus incrementorum' was simultaneously an attack upon the method of fluxions, for in 1713 Bernoulli had become involved in the priority dispute between Leibniz and Newton. Following publication of the Royal Society's 'Commercium epistolicum' in 1712, Leibniz had no choice but to present his case in public. He released - without naming names - a letter by Bernoulli. in which Newton was charged with errors stemming from a misinterpretation of the higher differential. Thereupon Newton's followers raised complicated analytical problems, such as the determination of trajectories and the problem of finding the ballistic curve, which Newton had solved only for the law of resistance R = av (R = resistance, a = constant, v = velocity). Bernoulli solved this problem (AE, 1719) for the general case., thus demonstrating the superiority of Leibniz' differential calculus" (DSB).

Paris: l'Honore & Chatelain, 1719. In very fine and crisp condition. Engraved map, with superb hand colouring, printed in four sheets joined, 86 x 144 cms. mounted and framed. A superb example of Henri Châtelain's rare and magnificent wall chart of the Pacific and its surrounds.Described by Schwartz as 'one of the most elaborately engraved maps', and Tooley as 'one of the most decorative maps of North America of the eighteenth century', this is undoubtedly one of the most richly decorated world maps ever produced. The aim of Châtelain's map was to educate the reader in matters of geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography, and this information-rich map is a visual celebration of the age of discovery. In the centre top of the chart are nine portrait medallions of the major explorers including Magellan, Columbus, Vespucci, Drake, Dampier, Jacques L'Hermite, and Schouten. There are brief descriptions of their achievements, and the tracks of their great voyages of discovery are marked. There are five voyages marked across the Pacific including that of Magellan in 1520, Le Maire and Schouten in 1616 and L'Hermite in 1625.Clustering around the margins of the chart are sumptuously engraved and richly coloured vignettes depicting indigenous peoples and exotic flora and fauna of the New World as well as famous historic events. Some of the images, such as the scene of beavers building dams and the view of the codfish factory, are derived from Herman Moll. There are several short paragraphs of text on the map, giving information about the features, government and people of different countries, the tides and winds.Australia is charted according to the discoveries of Tasman: "Nouvelle Hollande découverte l'an 1644", and the new place name "Golfo de Carpentarie" is recorded. The north of the continent is shown strangely flattened and the south coast of Tasmania, "Terre d'Antoine Diemens", is placed at a very great distance from the rest of the continent.Significantly this is one of the first maps to begin to dispel the myth of California as an island. Although it is tentatively drawn as such, a notation states that "moderns" believe it to be part of the mainland. The Carte Très Curieuse was originally issued in the sixth volume of Châtelain's encyclopedic Atlas Historique ou Nouvelle Introduction à l'histoire à la Chronologie et à la Géographe Ancienne et Moderne, which was published in seven folio volumes between 1705 and 1720. This map, the outstanding highlight of the atlas, was also separately issued. This is a rare and important map: very few maps of this scale have survived, fewer still in such excellent condition.

Artist: Aa van der Peter ca ; issued in: Leiden; date: ca1719 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 29 x 35; - description: Beautiful total view of the city Circassa of Caucasus; - vita of the artist: Pieter van der Aa ( 1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

Collection of 20th Century Paper Dolls used in Fashion Advertising to Children Directly

United States: , 1917-1996, 1719. United States, 1917-1996. In the 1880s companies saw a way of reaching a wider audience by creating advertising material that was directed towards a young audience. The hope was that children might help to direct their parent's spending habits. By the early 1900s, advertisers had perfected this technique and had come up with a wide variety of paper games and toys meant to attract a child's attention. One such paper toy that was used by advertisers was paper dolls. With the combination of cheap printing and a surge in the popularity of paper dolls, manufacturers of all kinds of household goods took advantage by using them to promote their wares. The fashion and clothing industry in particular used this to great effect, as these ads were designed to mainly target young girls, and encourage them to desire to dress like their favorite paper doll. This collection consists of 11 items (25 dolls) of advertising paper dolls. Below is a brief description of the items within the collection. Dandyline Company Paper Doll (1917) The Dandyline Company, based in Chicago, IL, made dresses for young girls in the early 1900s. It then sold them to retail stores across the country along with an advertising paper doll. While the two dolls in this section are extremely similar, they are slightly different. This is mainly seen in the details of the yellow dress they are both wearing. The back of the doll had a space for the retail store to print its name and address. This is the "Little Sister" series and includes two dolls and 14 costumes. Note the gender specific objects being held by the costumes. The back of each out had a Lot No. so that one could order the exact outfit. The two stores on the back of the dolls in this collection are E. M. Devine in Philadelphia, PA, and Hirsch D. G. Co. in Decatur, IL. 2 Dolls + 13 outfits, CUT, Measures 7" x 2 1/4" (Doll) FA Quality Family (c1920) During the 1920s a company by the name of FA Quality Trimmings, which sold various ribbons and trimmings meant to accent clothing, started a line of dolls called the FA Quality Family. It was a set of 4 dolls- Mother, Sister, Betty, and Buddy (Buddy is missing from this collection) with three outfits each. On each sheet is the advertising phrase: "These cut out dolls serve two purposes; to amuse the children and to give you the style suggestions designed by experts." 3 UNCUT SHEETS (3 dolls + 9 outfits), Measures 7 3/4" x 5" Stories and Fashion (1934) Like the title suggests, this 16 pp. black and white booklet contains both paper dolls and short stories. Published by Mabley & Carew, a prominent department store in Cincinnati, Ohio, its goal was to help sell the clothing available at its store. The book contains six dolls: Mary, Tommy, the twins Betty & Bobby, Billy and Baby Jane. Beside each outfit is the price and department store floor in which it can be found on. The stories in this booklet are: The Little Boy and the Brook, My Fairy, and the Baby Stuart. Cover is detached. 6 Dolls + 10 outfits with accessories, UNCUT Booklet, Measures 7 1/2" 5 1/4" Miss Sunbeam Paper Doll Set (1949) Sunbeam Bread used their Miss Sunbeam doll to not only encourage the purchase of their baked goods, but also as a mean of selling their "Simplicity Printed Patterns". These sewing patterns allowed mothers to recreate the dresses Miss Sunbeam wore for their daughter. Next to each outfit was a product code that correlated to a specific sewing pattern. There are two pages for this item, the first page, with the doll, is in color, while the second page is in black and white. This would allow the child to have even more fun with the toy by coloring in the outfits. These two sheets are stapled together. 1 Doll + 9 outfits with accessories, 2 UNCUT SHEETS, Measures 12" x 8 3/4" Miss Sunbeam Paper Doll Set (c1950) The same paper doll as mention in the previous item, but with new outfits, mean for a new season. These outfits, along with the product code also gave an age range. Additionally this version had a teddy bear paper doll as well. 1 Doll + 9 outfits with accessories, 2 UNCUT SHEETS, Measures 12" x 8 3/4" Gibbs Kids Paper Dolls (c1950) Produced by Gibbs Underwear Company, based in Philadelphia, PA, Gibbs Kids was a series of paper dolls intended to help local retailers sell their clothes. The doll featured is the "10 year old Sister", and it showcases 4 outfits. What is unique about this item is not all the outfits paired with the doll are made or sold by Gibbs. Additionally, on the back of the sheet is a stamp that says "Compliments of Paperdoll Gazette, Shirley Hedge, Editor, Route 2, Princeton IND. 47679" 1 Doll + 4 outfits, 1 UNCUT SHEETS, Measures 12" x 9" Carter's School Wise Cut-Ups (Sept 1952) Printed in the September 1952 issue of McCall's, a monthly American women's magazine that ceased publication in 1992, was a printed ad for Carter's. Carter's was a clothing store for children selling clothes from 'cradle through school'. This ad features two dolls, a Big Sis, and a Baby Sis, each with their own outfit. The ad speaks directly to the child stating that their outfits mean that "Daddy saves dollars galore!" 2 Dolls + 2 outfits, 1 UNCUT SHEET, Measures 13 1/2" x 5 1/4" Pretty as Picture (1961) In a children's magazine, entitled 'Jack & Jill', a paper doll was printed for Vogue Patterns, a company that sold patterns for fashionable clothes. This doll was designed by Betty Jaxon and was meant to capitalize on the Easter holiday. In two sheets, a doll named Jill (there are two version of the same doll, each in a difference stance) is surrounded by colorful, fashionable outfits. Each outfit has the pattern number printed on its tabsThe Pretty as a Picture sheet was a store give-away, the second sheet is a proof presumably for future designs. 2 Dolls + 10 outfits with accessories, 2 UNCUT SHEETS, Measures 14" x 10 1/4" (Larger sheet) Bendel's Cut-Out Dolls (1962) Henri Bendel was an innovator when it came to high end luxury fashion and his boutique shop in New York City soon became a beacon of luxury for the cities elite. He also was a strong proponent fashion-centric illustration, and since paper dolls are a natural progression of that he soon had several books of them that he used to sell his clothes. The item is a 12 pp. booklet with paper wraps. The cover is an illustration of a cut out sheet of paper dolls. The book includes three (3) paper dolls and four (4) pages of outfits. The reverse of the page provides a narrative description, sizing information and pricing for each of the paper doll costumes. There is even an introductory note in the beginning of the book that asks the children not to cut out the dolls until mother has ordered the desired outfits. 3 Dolls + 21 outfits with accessories, UNCUT Booklet, Measures 9" x 7" Vind Garn Til Vinterens Dolls (1966) Published in Familie Journalen, Denmark's longest running weekly family and women's magazine (it was started in 1877), are two paper dolls. The advertisement is for Dale Crepe, a yarn company in Europe. The dolls are meant to help selling knitting patterns, and each sweater is a pattern you can purchase. There is a both a boy and girl doll, each with fours knit sweaters, and at least one knit hat and pair of mittens. In Danish. 2 Dolls + 8 sweaters with accessories, 2 UNCUT SHEETS, Measures 13 1/2" x 10" Look Book Holiday (1996) This advertising pamphlet was aimed directly at both young boy and girl fashionistas. This is evident even in the title, as a 'Look Book' is a collection of designs compiled to show off a style or clothing line. Even the names of the outfits advertised in this accordion folded pamphlet are titled to reflect that. Such as "Glamor Girl", "Updated Classics", and "Long, Lean Look". Published for the holiday season by The Children's Place, an American specialty retailer of children's apparel and accessories since 1969. It comes with two dolls, a boy and a girl with several outfits each. The pamphlet is printed in color and is double sided. As such, it is impossible to cut out both dolls and all the outfits from the same pamphlet. 2 Dolls + 13 outfits with accessories, UNCUT, Measures 5" x 3 1/4" (folded), 26" x 5" (unfolded) To view this collection, please click on the following link: https://goo.gl/photos/XwvcVTTJih1xvwYr7

A System of Experimental Philosophy Prov'd by Mechanicks, wherein the principles and laws of Physicks, Mechanicks, Hydrostaticks, and Opticks, are demonstrated and explained at large, by a great number of curious experiments. . .

London:: Printed for B. Creake, ... J. Sackfield ...; And sold by W. Mears, ... 1719., 1719. Sm. 4to. [xxii], 201, [5] pp. 10 folding engraved copperplates, 5 figs. (pp. 24, 54, 75, 112), half-title is a publisher's ad for Boerhaave, rear publisher's ads [2 ff.], head and tail-pieces; title edges chipped. With errata. Title (+ p.101) perforated stamp and with a rubber stamp on verso, of the John Crerar Library, eight plates with the ex-library rubber stamp on versos; waterstained throughout. WITH FREQUENT EARLY INK CORRECTIONAL NOTES. Modern half blind-stamped dark calf, gilt spine title, raised bands, marbled paper over boards, new endleaves, bindery ticket at rear: Pat M. Bruno. Inscription on recto of front blank (verso is ad for Boerhaave book), "W. --- 1720 Power." SPURIOUS EDITION OF DESAGULIERS' FAMOUS PRIVATE LECTURES CONTAINING NOTES ON BOYLE'S AIR PUMP AND NEWTON ON COLOR THEORY. FIRST ENLARGED EDITION, early issue, without "All carefully Examined and Corrected by Mr. Desaguliers" on title [which otherwise is re-titled, "Lectures of Experimental Philosophy"]. Includes: Sir Isaac Newton's Colours. Proposition. Lights which differ in Colour, differ also in Degrees of Refrangibility. Initially published without the author's permission and then, by evidence of the printed Preface, agreed to issue the book with an erratum. There are multiple forms of this edition as different copies collate differently (Andrade, Kenney, Honeyman copies). The Honeyman copy, called a second edition, has two title-pages, and the Preface by Desaguliers, with an imprint of 1719. There are also differences in the title-pages. The fiasco of the unauthorized edition is the cause of the various issue differences. "Perhaps Dawson hoped ... to ingratiate himself with his patron, but instead he incurred the wrath of the lecturer. Immediately Desaguliers became aware of the book, which he called 'ill put together, sadly transcrib'd and worse corrected', he approached the booksellers. He found that two-thirds of the imprint had already been sold by Messrs Mears, Creake and Sackfield, but they paid him ten guineas 'to pacifie me'. They also promised to insert into all remaining copies a preface that Desaguliers would write, together with a substantial errata. The preface follows the Dawson dedication in some copies of the book entitled, A System of Experimental Philosophy, but precedes it in another version called Lectures in Experimental Philosophy." See: Carpenter, pp. 34-5, 119. Contents: Mechanical experiments, Mechanical powers & definitions; How to make a heavy Body seem to rise it self; gravity, balance, leaver, pulley, wheel axle, wedge, screw, laws of nature, hydrostatics; Description of Robert Boyle's Air-Pump (uses & experiments); How to make an air vacuum; Barometers, Thermometers, Hydrometers; Catoptrichs; Dioptrichs; Sir Isaac Newton's Colours; Condensing Engine; "Rowley's Horary being a machine to represent the Motion of the Moon about the Earth, and the Earth, Venus and Mercury about the Sun." The preface, written by Desaguliers himself, explains that this volume of lectures was released "before I designed to publish them." He then retells how Paul Dawson "took a copy of the lectures ... that they may be service to him when he went thro' my courses, and they were afterwards sold and published without my knowledge." He obtained a copy of the text and made numerous corrections - thus the micro-print 1 ½ page errata. The he invites the owner to annotate the book throughout "before he begins to read the lectures." And indeed, the owner named Powers did annotate this copy - clear evidence he read that Preface. (A2-3). The DNB asserts that Desaguliers, "held in great esteem by Sir Isaac Newton," "is said to have been the first to deliver learned lectures to general audiences. Lectures by him, at his London house were widely attended and were made attractive by experiments." In addition it mentions that Paul Dawson was responsible for the work and that Desaguliers himself "disavowed" himself of the edition. - DNB (pp. 850-1). Nicholas A Hans describes the types of persons attending Desaguliers' lectures: "merchants, craftsmen and clerks, and his private audiences consisted of gentlemen and courtiers and included ladies as well." - Nicholas A Hans, New Trends in Education in the Eighteenth Century, (1951), p. 141. Westfall says of Desaguliers, he "became a fixture at the meetings [of the Royal Society], where he carried out sets of experiments intimately related to various aspects of Newtonian natural philosophy. Some of his experiments, such as the transmission of heat through a vacuum, influenced Newton's views, and other found their way into the third edition of the Principia." - Never at Rest, pp. 685-6. Writing for the DSB, A. Rupert Hall, points out that Desaguliers did not produce his own version of these lectures until 1734, "when he took occasion to denounce this unauthorized version..." - DSB, IV, pp. 43-6. John Theophilus Desaguliers (1683-1744), born at La Rochelle, emigrated to England in 1685 [as a Huguenot refugee, hidden in a tub at 2-years of age], studied at Oxford, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1714. As the Society's experimenter and a close friend of Newton he often verified Newton's theories through experimentation. "In 1717 he published Physico-Mechanical Lectures, an eighty-page abstract of the twenty-two lectures of his course. Although not authorized by Desaguliers, the present work is the first full account of his lectures, edited by his student Paul Dawson. Primarily of interest as a textbook of Newtonian physics, many chemical topics are included. The first issue appeared with the title A System of Experimental Philosophy."

Holdsworth thought highly of this book, noting its "a learned book-the author tells us that he had consulted nearly a hundred authorities; the idea of making such a book was original; and the main features of the constitution are set out." In his preface, Jacob indicates that he did not write this treatise on England's Constitution for the landed gentry exclusively, but for "gentlemen of all ranks," that is, the literate general public. This distinction is significant. Jacob, though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible, was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications, such as A Tr.
