The Book of Oaths, And the Several Forms Thereof, Both Ancient.

1715 - A Fascinating Anthology of Oaths [Garnet, Richard, Attributed]. The Book of Oaths, And the Several Forms Thereof, Both Ancient and Modern, Faithfully Collected Out of Sundry Authentick Books of Records. To Which is Added, An Appendix Compleating the Whole to this Present Year. Very Useful for all Persons Whatsoever, Especially Those that Undertake any Office of Magistracy or Publick Imployment. London: Printed for Robert Gosling, 1715. [xvi], 160, 191-206, 177-264, 35, [3] pp. Pagination irregular. Text complete. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, raised bands to spine. Light rubbing and faint staining to boards, tiny early label to rear board, moderate rubbing to extremities, some chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and somewhat worn, boards beginning to detach. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling and a few minor dampstains to title page. A scarce title. $1,250. * Third, final and best edition, enlarged with a new appendix, with index, that includes an oath of a jury of matrons (for deciding if a woman is pregnant) and several others unique to this edition. Attributed to Garnet, this is a fascinating collection of oaths for a remarkably wide range of offices, such as an attorney, archbishop, verderer of a forest and lieutenant of the tower. Several oaths are quite revealing. The oath for a midwife, for example, states that she will not "exercise any manner of Witchcraft, Charm, or Sorcery" (192). That of a ship master engaged in the slave trade contains a promise that a manifest of goods originally put on board still be correct, "Negroes exempted," a tacit admission that enslaved people die in transit (Appendix, 16). It also includes historical oaths, such as the Oath of King Charles. The first two editions were published in 1649 and 1689. All three editions are scarce. English Short-Title Catalogue N16582.          Sussex, Surry and Kent, by C.S. Corrected and Amended with many Additions by Phil Lea. Cantii, Southsexiæ, Surriæ et Middelsexiæ comitat. Una cum suis Undique confinibus, Oppidis, pagis, Villis, et Fluminibus, in eisdem vera descriptio.

1715 - London: George Willdey, c.1715. Original outline colour. 410 x 540mm. A scarce map of South East England, depictng Surrey, Sussex, Kent and, despite not being listed in the English title, Middlesex. The map first appeared in Saxton's atlas of England and Wales published 1579, the first county atlas. The plate has a long and interesting history. It was engraved by Remigius Hogenberg (c.1536-c.1588), older brother of Frans (engraver of the Ortelius atlas and the Braun & Hogenberg townplans), when the pair were taking refuge in England from the religious turmoil in the southern Netherlands. When John Speed copied most of Saxton's maps for his 'Theatre' atlas of 1611, he decided to use individual maps of these counties by John Norden instead. Superceded by Speed, Saxton's plates lay unused until 1645, when William Web published a new edition, with this map only updated with the arms of Charles I and the date 1642. After a 'ghost' edition of c.1665, the next edition was published by Philip Lea (c.1689), when the English title, the hundreds and symbols (crosses, crowns & mitres) were added. A second Lea edition (c.1693) saw the addition of Ogilby's roads, five armorials and Lea's address added under the original Latin title. Willdey was the next publisher, leaving Lea's details but adding his own along the bottom edge, as this example. A final edition of the atlas was published by Thomas Jefferys in 1749, 170 years after the first edition! [Attributes: First Edition]

1715-16 1715 - First edition. Four parts in one volume. 4to. Twentieth century polished blue morocco by Emile Rousselle, gilt dentelles and spine, some very light staining to the title-page of the second part but otherwise a very clean and attractive volume. Parte IVLisbon, 1716. Very rare four part account of the activities of the Portuguese army in India in the period 1713-14. Also included are the full text of the peace treaty between the State of India and the King of Kanara, signed in Goa, 19 February 1714 (pp. 6-14 of part II), There is much other interesting material including an account of the Pirate Angria, and of Portuguese influence on the coasts of arabia and the Persian Gulf. and some charming neo-Latin and Portuguese acrostic sonnets (pp. 5-6 of part I) dedicated to Fernandes Cesar de Menezes who was the Portuguese governor of India from 1712 until 1717. Mascarenhas planned to produce additional parts but none were published. Jose Freire de Monterroyo (1670-1760) was one of the founders of periodical literature in Portugal. His most famous publication the 'Gazeta de Lisboa' began in 1715 and was produced until his death in 1760. He was known throughout Portugal for his erudition but his interest in periodical literature prevented him from being accepted in serious academic circles. Monterroyo wanted to be accepted as both a historian and popular author. An unpublished dissertation by Andre Belo,Between History and Periodicity: Printed and Hand-Written News in 18th century Portugaldiscusses this point: 'The word 'journalist' (jornalista) was not used in Portugal in the first half of the 18th century, being derived from the French journaliste and immediately was given a pejorative sense. The translator and editor of the Portuguese gazette was sometimes referred to as a gazeteiro (gazetteer), a name that occurs more than once in the context of satires directed against the gazette. In the advertisements of his own printed works made in the gazette, where his full name seldom appears, Monterroyo is occasionally mentioned as the 'author of the gazette'. In Monterroyo's life, periodical and occasional newsbooks did not give a name to an author.' Such is also the case with these four works that, although anonymous, have been attributed to Monterroyo. OCLC does not record a complete copy with all four parts and catalogues each work individually, although da SilvaDicionario Bibliografica Portuguezvol. 4, p. 345, no. 3330 describes this work as consisting of four parts. OCLC records the Newberry Library as having three of the four parts but no other institution in America has more than one (OCLC records copies of part II at the University of Minnesota and Princeton); an additional copy of part III can be located at Harvard. Only the British Library world-wide appears to have all four parts. No copies of any of the four parts have appeared at auction in the past twenty-five years. Contemporary full calf, with gold lettering to spine. Marbled endpapers. Decorative woodcut initials and tailpieces. Book housed in a modern black cloth covered clamshell box, with gold lettering to spine. The King James' version, with the Geneva notes. The Bible starts with "The Book of Common Prayer" (1715), followed by The Old Testament ends on page 712; Apocrypha with separate title page inserted; The New Testament is lacking its title page and ends on page 248. Bible ends with the "Whole Book of Psalms Collected Into English Metre" (1715). (See Darlow & Moule, 731). This Bible is complete with its six copperplate maps by Nicolaes Visscher I, Amsterdam, and J. Moxon, London: - 1) Paradise, Or The Garden Of Eden. With the Countries circumjacent Inhabited by the Patriarchs: An early representation of the area comprised between present Egypt and Iran which locates the Garden of Eden on the Euphrates's banks in an area belonging now to Iraq. Combining actual and Biblical geography, it features several semi-mythical locations such as the Land of Nod, the Tower of Babel. In a vignette in the top right corner Adam and Eve standing by the Tree of Knowledge are being chased out of the lush Garden by an angel brandishing a sword. A similar example by Visscher is part of a series of five which was included in the Abraham van den Broeck's 1657 Dutch Staten Bible and would become basis for numerous other Biblical maps appearing through the 18th century, including those of Stoopendal, Krul and Moxon. - 2) Israels Peregrination, or the Forty Years Travels of the Children of Israel Out of Egypt Through the Red Sea, and the Wilderness into Canaan, or the Land of Promise: This map shows the Palestinian and Lebanese coast and depicts the Jews' passage through the Red Sea and the Sinai Desert. North is oriented to the right. At the bottom are vignettes displaying the encampment of the tribes flanked by Aaron and Moses as well as Temple vessels flanked by cherubs. Originally by Nicolaes Visscher, the map was translated into English by Joseph Moxon. - 3) A Map of all the Earth and how after the Flood it was Divided among the Sons of Noah: The map illustrates how the world was divided up among the sons of Noah after the Flood. It is centered on the Old World and only the place names are concentrated there. The rest of the world is shown only with continental outlines, rivers and lakes. The 'island' of California appears across the expansive Pacific Ocean where there are partial outlines for Australia and New Zealand. A series of vignettes surround the map illustrating the Creation and the Garden of Eden at top, with scenes from the Fall of Man to the Crucifixion of Christ at bottom. Two cartouches further decorate the sheet, including a dedication to Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury. In between the two cartouches features Moxon's table of place names. - 4) Jerusalem: This detailed bird's-eye plan was one of the most popular plans of Jerusalem during the 17th century. While it is an imaginary plan, it provides great detail of the city walls and streets, with a numbered key to important religious sites. Solomon's Temple is at upper center and Herod's Palace is located at the far left. This is the last state with biblical scenes on the hillsides in the foreground. Originally by Nicolaes Visscher, the map was translated into English by Joseph Moxon. - 5) Canaan or the Land of Promise.       Londini: Ex Officinâ Jacobi Tonson, & Johannis Watts, 1715. First Printing of this Edition. Love poet, philosopher, political exile, explicator of myth and ritual, Ovid presents many facets of Roman culture, and this set would make a fine addition to any library of classics. Maittaire used the 1629 edition of Heinsius as the basis of his text, but also lists variants discussed by Heinsius in his notes. As with other Maittaire publications, the indices are very extensive and give a good guide to Ovid's use of words and phrases as well as referring the reader to mentions of people and places. Thus, this edition is useful for linguists and literary critics as well as for those mining Ovid's works as sources for cult and myth. Schweiger remarks that copies in good condition are seldom to be found, and we could trace no copy of any kind (much less a well preserved copy in a decorative contemporaneous binding) in ABPC for the past 40 years.. 184 x 112 mm. At the intersection of the Baltic Sea and lake Mälaren is an archipelago site where the Old Town of Stockholm was first occupied in about 1000 AD by Vikings. Vikings had a positive trade impact on the land because of the trade routes they created.

Thieme/Becker XVIII, 549. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1715 1st Gueudeville ed Thomas More UTOPIA Socialism Communism Utopian Politics

Leide : Pierre Vander Aa, 1715. First edition. - 1715 1st Gueudeville ed Thomas More UTOPIA Socialism Communism Utopian Politics “[how can anyone] be silly enough to think himself better than other people, because his clothes are made of finer woolen thread than theirs. After all, those fine clothes were once worn by a sheep, and they never turned it into anything better than a sheep.” Thomas More, Utopia This famous book by Thomas More, ‘Utopia,’ depicts a fictional island society with its own social, religious, and political customs. First published in 1516, many 16th-century critics were curious and confused at the reason More wrote the work. Many aspects of ‘Utopia’ describe life in a monastery, yet still, More seems to be criticizing European society – which he considered to have many problems. More, a devout Catholic, writes of controversial topics which those on the island of Utopia practiced such as divorce, euthanasia, married priests, and female priests. These practices were widely opposed within the Catholic faith, but More cites them as commonplace in his writing. ‘Utopia’ is even polarizing in terms of modern politics. It seems to have been influential to Anabaptists, communism, and social Marxism. Though, ‘the answer implied by “Utopia” was that political realities must be changed in order to free men.” “More was claiming that community pressure could be made to correspond to and to endorse conscience and the way to achieve this was through institutional and legal regulation, supervision and control the environment of the monastery.” (Davis, 57-58). An incredibly rare first edition printing of Nicolas Gueudeville’s translation of Thomas More’s ‘Utopia.’ – Includes expected first issue points, see below.          THE CASE OF THE COASTING FISHERMEN [caption title]

[London, 1715. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. A rare petition to Parliament relating to a current bill concerning the mesh size of fishing nets used along the coast of Great Britain. The fishing lobby here argues that the clause limiting mesh size to four inches, except for use with "Herrings, Pilchards, Sprats and Sardenas," will prevent the catching of various larger fish and lobster and thereby ruin much of the national fishing industry. They claim that the fishmongers, who support the regulation, would prefer "to bring in Foreign Fish caught in Foreign Bottoms" and profit from the higher prices. A leaflet published the same year, entitled AN ANSWER TO THE CASE OF THE COASTING FISHERMEN, indicates the present document was written by the lobsterman lobby. An early example of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC records copies at only two institutions, Oxford and the University of London. HANSON 2118.

Quinti Horatii Flacci Venusini Latinorum lyricorum facile principis poëmata omnia [...] Lyon, Barthélemy Vincent, 1571.

Contemporary parchment binding. 120x80 mm, 16º: a-t#8 v#4 (v4 blanco), 308 [2] pp. On title page printer's mark “Vincenti.” Inner hinges broken, damaged title page (rebound), ex libris with pen “A. Bacigaleye,”; “Antonio Sisco M.D., 1715.” Words with pen on last flyleaf, Latin text in pen on first flyleaf. These are the complete works by the Latin lyric poet Horace (Horatius) (65 – 8 BC), on the title page referred to as “facile princeps.” His work has had a significant impact on the development of poetry in Europe. In 38 BC Horatius was admitted to the literary circle around Maecenas, after he was introduced by Virgil (Vergillius). Horatius was inspired by Greek examples (especially the archaic poets such as Sappho). He rises above the level of his predecessors though by his content and style. Horace's style is distinguished by a large variety of serious and solemn language to almost everyday speech. His use of words is very precise and therefore his formulation always fits perfectly. For every ode in this publication the meter is chanted (bij elke ode wordt het metrum gescandeerd). This is a reprint of the edition that was published in 1554 by Antoine Vincent Lyon. In the colophon Symphorianus Barbier was listed as the printer of this publication. Rare edition.

THE CASE OF THE MERCHANTS-SUFFERERS, IN THE LATE DREADFUL FIRE, BY THE BURNING OF SUGAR, GINGER, OIL, AND SARSARILLA [caption title]

[London, 1715. Broadside. Dbd. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. A rare leaflet lobbying Parliament on behalf of British merchants who had recently lost £22,500 worth of sugar, ginger, oil, and sarsaparilla in a great fire. The merchants had just recently imported the goods, paying approximately £3000 in customs. In the present document the merchants petition the House of Commons to allow them to import goods duty-free up to the value of the customs of the goods destroyed. This is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715.       Sold by Phil: Overton Mapseller against St. Dunstans Church in Fleet Street London, 1715 - Copper engraved with original hand colour 570 x 930 mm Engraved by John Oliver on two sheets, on a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile. This is the rare second state of a map first published c. 1681 by John Selller and John Oliver, known only by a unique copy in the British Library. For this later edition widespread revisions have been carried out to the decorative and explanatory features and there have been additions and alterations to the map itself. It is orientated with the west to the top of the map and is printed on two separate sheets. The right-hand sheet, which contains the decorative title cartouche, includes engravings of 'The Publicke Schools in Oxford' and 'The Pavement Mosaic Work Discover'd at Stansfield near Woodstock'. The left-hand sheet includes views of Blenheim House, Blenheim Bridge, and the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. More important, however, is the fine 'Prospect of Oxford from the East near London Road'. There is a list of the hundreds and of the market towns whilst Overton's additions include mileage's given between some of the towns; a note below the mileage scales states 'the uppermost figures in the Circles are Computed and the undermost Statute or Measured Miles and Furlongs'. An informative and clearly engraved map, the towns and villages particularly prominent. The engraver, John Oliver, was a surveyor, engraver and glass-painter who gained prominence at the end of teh seventeenth century contributing to maps of Middlesex, Essex, Kent and Hertfordshire. Buchanan, 1506-1582, the Scottish historian and humanist scholar was, according to historian Keith Brown "the most profound intellectual sixteenth century Scotland produced". Educated partly at the Scots College in Paris he also worked there and later in Bordeaux. He was imprisoned in Lisbon, charged with Lutheran and Judaistic practices but later became tutor to Mary, Queen of Scots and subsequently to the young James VI. Although of Highland stock and with Gaelic as his native language he became a fluent and subtle writer in Latin and considered by Hugh Trevor-Roper the greatest Latin writer, whether in prose or verse, of his time in Europe. This edition, edited by Thomas Ruddiman, 1674-1757, is the first edition of Buchan's collected works. Ruddiman, a Jacobite, disagreed with his subject's views hostile to hereditary monarchy and wrote a dissenting introduction to the work.

G. in Hirsch-H. Robert Zander bemerkt: "Enthält sehr viel Aberglauben". [Johan.
