Page measures 15.5 x 18.25 inches. This map of Brazil dates from the mid-18th century, when the Portuguese colony was in the midst of a gold rush. Full of identifying and descriptive detail, it documents the knowledge gained of the region "formerly called the Country of Saint Croix" as new people moved to and explored the region. Notes scattered throughout comment particularly on the rivers and mines, with one even pointing to a Native American settlement "said to abound with gold and silver." On the left, an inset map describes the island of Saint Catherine and surrounding smaller islands as situated off the Brazilian coast. Above, a decorative cartouche displays the map's title on a plinth surrounded by a bag of gold and a Native American. The map has been repaired at center fold line. Repair at top and bottom of center fold, Some slight chips at edges, repair to tear at bottom right corner.Emanuel Bowen (1714-1767) was an English map engraver who served as Royal Mapmaker to George II of England and Louis XV of France. He was well-regarded for his large, detailed, and accurate maps.

British Heraldic Coats of Arms in the time of King George I - RARE

      - PERMANENT HALF PRICE SALE - WHY PAY MORE? A RARE collection of 188 contemporary hand tinted and finely engraved family crests of the British aristocracy beginning with the then king, George I, followed by his son George Augustus, the Prince of Wales, all the way through to the family crest of Robert Walpole, so this is a fascinating document from a key era of British history. There is no date, but as George reigned from 1714-1727, it follows that the date of this book would fall within this period. Although all the crests are present, intact and clear, please note that the title page(s) is missing and that "British Heraldic Coats of Arms" is a description of the book's contents rather than an actual title. In addition, a 1 1/2" portion of the upper part of the page above King George's crest has been sliced off, although this does not affect the crest itself. The front cover, although present, is detached, and the back cover is held on by tape. The page edges are dirty, and there is some browning on the very edges of most pages and a few areas of discolouration here and there, but as stated all the crests are presentable and the large majority are very clean indeed. There is also an owner's sticker on the front pastedown, with a crest that reads "Deeds, not Words" and, below that motto, "Dawson of Low Wray". The front and rear hard leather covers show shelf wear and considerable scuffing as might be expected with a book approaching 300 years old, and despite its flaws this is a rare and beautiful volume. At the end of the book are two pages of smaller crests, which are not coloured. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Poortman, W.C. (1995). Kaarten in Bijbels, p. 195-203 / Storm van Leeuwen, J.          La Carniola et l'Istrie

Incisione in rame, con coloritura coeva, perfette condizioni. Grandissima rarità cartografica." "A very rare map taken from the ""Nouveau Petit Atlas - Atlas soluagé de son gros pesant fardeau"" printed in Leiden circa 1714. The atlas is very rare and only one complete copy is known in the library of Leiden, while Burden old only the first volume. The atlas is composed of nine parts: a general part ""Nouveau Petit Atlas"" and 8 parts with maps of a certain region each titled ""Atlas soulagé de son gros & pesant fardeau"". Almost all maps are printed from reworked plates of Janssonius's ""Atlas Minor"". The titles and scale were translated into French. The cartouches have been modernized and windrose added. Copperplate with contemporary outline colour, perfect conditions. Great rarity." Van der Krogt, Koeman's Atlas Neerlandici, Vol. III B, pp. 561/570, 352:51.

Harmonia Sacra: or, Divine Hymns and Dialogues: with a Thorough-Bass for the Theorbo-Lute, Bass-Viol, Harpsichord, or Organ. Composed by the Best Masters of the last and Present Age. The Words by several Learned and Pious Persons. The First Book. The 3d. Edition very much Enlarg'd and Corrected; also Four Excellent Anthems of the late Mr. H. Purcell's never before Printed

London: William Pearson, for S.H. and Sold by John Young, 1714. "Viewed as a whole, the contents [of Harmonia Sacra], both as to text and music, reveal a style that can best be described as very 'high church'... Purcell had not only contributed a larger share than anyone else to Harmonia Sacra, book I, but, as Henry Playford stated in a preface..., had taken upon himself the responsibilities of music editor as well." Zimmerman p. 147. "In early July 1693 the second volume of Harmonia Sacra was advertised for sale, contained in which were five of Purcell's finest devotional songs... 'In guilty night' is unique among all Purcell's sacred music: it fits into no single category, combining elements of the devotional song with those of the cantata and the oratorio... "Harmonia Sacra also contained two magnificent settings for solo soprano which demonstrate how Purcell had taken the dramatic, declamatory Italian style and created his own variant, brilliantly colourful yet always aware of every subtlety in the text... Purcell's treatment of Nahum Tate's 'Tell me, some pitying angel'... is one of the greatest examples of Purcell's genius for setting words and capturing changing emotions, and arguable one of the best solo settings in the whole English musical repertoire." King: Henry Purcell, pp. 195-197.. 1f. (recto blank, verso frontispiece in facsimile), 1f. (recto title printed in red and black, verso blank) 1f. (dedication to the Queen by Henry Playford in facsimile, verso blank), 1f. (recto Henry Playford's letter "To the Reader," verso index), 130 pp. With both decorative and historiated woodcut initials throughout. Pp. 1-4 with early manuscript annotations, apparently inserted from another copy. Most of the compositions are by Henry Purcell; other composers represented include John Blow, John Church, Pelham Hymphryes, Matthew Locke, William Turner, and John Weldon. Third edition. Zimmerman p. 505, 1714b. BUC p. 789. RISM BII p. 196 Bound with: Harmonia Sacra... The First [corrected to "Second" in contemporary manuscript] Book. Oxon." addressed "to Dr. John Blow, and Mr. Henry Purcell, upon the First and Second Books of Harmonia Sacra), 1f. (recto with two additional poems, the first addressed to Purcell and signed "T.B.," the second addressed to H[enry] P[layford] and signed "By an unknown Hand.," verso (index and publisher's advertisement), 112 pp. With both decorative and historiated woodcut initials throughout. In addition to Henry Purcell, other composers represented in this volume include John Blow, Giacomo Carissime, Jeremiah Clarke, William Croft, Robert King, and Daniel Purcell. Second edition. Zimmerman p. 505 1714b. BUC p. 789. RISM BII p. 196.          Orbis Veteribus Noti Tabula Nova

Artist: L Isle de /Covens & Mortier Guillaume ca ; issued in: Paris; date: ca1714 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49,5 x 50; - description: map of the eastern hemisphere.; - vita of the artist: Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

An Act for Providing a Publick Reward for Such Person or Persons as Shall Discover the Longitude at Sea

      J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, London 1714 - First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier/Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the invention of the marine chronometer by John Harrison in 1773. Harrison received more prize money under the Act than anyone else, and the marine chronometer eventually came into wide use in the 19th century. The act was issued separately and as part of the collected acts of Parliament. It is found here in a contemporary bound volume of Acts from the 12th year of Queen Anne's reign. Horblit/Grolier 42a; ESTC N53213 Contemporary blind-panelled reverse calf, brown morocco spine label. Poortman, W.C. (1995). Kaarten in Bijbels, p. 195-203 / Storm van Leeuwen, J. He parted with Calvinism over his interpretations and left Geneva for that reason. - Henry Hammond (1605-1660) was an English churchman, who supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War.
