An Act for Providing a Publick Reward for Such Person or Persons as Shall Discover the Longitude at Sea

      J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, London 1714 - First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier/Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the invention of the marine chronometer by John Harrison in 1773. Harrison received more prize money under the Act than anyone else, and the marine chronometer eventually came into wide use in the 19th century. The act was issued separately and as part of the collected acts of Parliament. It is found here in a contemporary bound volume of Acts from the 12th year of Queen Anne's reign. Horblit/Grolier 42a; ESTC N53213 Contemporary blind-panelled reverse calf, brown morocco spine label. Binding slightly rubbed and marked, else a very good, clean and tall copy [Attributes: First Edition]

The northern displays California as a peninsula and a spartan northern Pacific. The south polar map depicts the routes of explorers including Tasman. Poortman, W.C. (1995).

      G. Benhourt, Rouen 1714 - An important work in two parts on the kingdom of Morocco in the early 18th century and the attempt to redeem Christian prisoners who were taken captive and held by the marauding pirates of North Africa. The problem reached such epidemic proportions that a religious order, the Trinitarians, was founded with the express purpose of ransoming such captives. The author of the work, Busnot, was one such member and tried unsuccessfully to free captives held in Morocco during his visits to the region. The work describes the history and culture of Morocco and the state of the Christians who were held. The second part is a treatise on the tradition and methods of the Church regarding the redemption of hostages in such situations. Quite an interesting work. 12mo (17 x 10cm), First part: [5], 254pp., [13]. Second part: 278pp. Engraved frontispiece of the King of Morocco granting an audience to the Trinitarians. Bound in contemporary calf, some rubbing, especially to joints, occasional toning. A very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ottimo esemplare totalmente coevo. Legatura coeva in piena pelle, fregi in oro al dorso, pp. 227, 1 - 1 Tav. ripiegata, in 16°

In Which Are Collected, All the Judgments and Resolutions Dispersed in the Year-Books, And All Other Reports Both in Law and Equity, What Estates in Fee, In Tail, For Life or Years, Have Been Created by Wills Either Expressly or by Implication. Very Necessary for All Such Who Are, Or May Be, Entitled to any Estates, By Vertue of Any Will or Administration, Or as Guardians to Infants. Collected in a More Plain, Easie, And Methodical Manner, Than Hitherto Hath Been Done in Any Treatise of this Nature. [London]:Printed by J. Nutt, 1714. [viii], 532, [12] pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title and gilt-edged raised bands with blind tooling to spine, endpapers renewed. Title page printed in red and black. Light toning to text, tiny spot between pp. 336-337 from a bit of glue (or other sticky substance), inetrnally clean. A notably handsome copy. $750. * First edition. "The Difficulty is to find out what a Man intended after he is dead; and concerning such Intentions, there have been so many nice speculations and fine Constructions both of Words and Sentences, that a Man may with great Truth affirm, many Wills have been made after the Testator himself hath been dead. (...) Lord Hales tells us in Fry and Porter's Case, that a will may be any thing, every thing, nothing, and the reason is plain, for when a man is sick, and yet hath a disposing power, he usually writes non-sense, and then the judges must rack their brains to find out what he intended" (Preface). This book had two other editions in 1724 and 1733. In addition to treatises on evidence, game law and a notable JP manual, Nelson produced editions of Dalton's Countrey Justice, Blount's Nomo Lexicon and Manwood's Laws of the Forest.
