The Roads of England According to Mr Ogilby's Survey.

1713 - London: George Willdey, c.1713. Contemporary colour refreshed. 590 x 595mm. Repairs to folds, laid on archival paper. A scarce separate-issue map of England and Wales arranged to show the roads as surveyed for John Ogilby's 'Britannia'. To make the detail marked on the roads clear (for example the distances between towns) the geographical outline of the country is distorted, fitting into a circle. Bottom left there is no attempt to show the Cornish peninsula, yet Land's End is marked. The rich borders are decorated with acanthus leaves, with roundels containing armorials. The map is unusual in that it was printed from two plates, a circular plate, 525mm in diameter, for the map and a second plate for the border. As this border has no distinct 'up', examples exist where the border is rotated in relation to the map into all four cardinals. This example is rotated 90º clockwise to the illustration in Shirley. The map can also be found without the border. Ogilby's 'Britannia' was the world's first printed road atlas, published 1675, a hugely-influential publication; soon his roads started appearing on British county maps, and, nearly forty years later, Ogilby's work was still being used. SHIRLEY: Willdey 1, 'striking road map'; this second state, not listed in Shirley, has apparent 'crossing-out' lines through Willdey's imprint.

Coloured, 550 x 665mm. Narrow top margin. A close copy of Jacques Cassini's extremely rare map published by Nolin in 1696, showing the world on an Azimuthal equidistant projection (i.e. in a single sphere, centred on the North Pole, heavily distorting the Antipodes. This, in turn, was based on Jean-Dominique Cassini's 8-metre map prepared for the French Academy of Sciences in the 1680s, the first map to set standard longitudes for known places based on the observations of the moons of Jupiter. Here the sites where the readings were taken are marked with stars. In the Cassini-Nolin map the corners were left blank; here they have been embellished with designs by Jan Goree, with four large classical figures, including Mercury, cherubs and the signs of the Zodiac. On the map California is an island. See SHIRLEY 579 for Cassini's original.

Voyage du Tour de la France.

A Paris, chez Etienne Ganeau, 1713. - in-12. 12ff. 504pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Palau, 52718. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Preface to the B----p of S--r--m's Introduction to the Third Volume of the History of the Reformation of the Church of England [in a bound volume of 16 tracts]

London: John Morphew, 1713. First edition. 56 pp. 8vo. Contemporary speckled calf, remnant of morocco spine label, edges sprinkled. Binding worn with joints and spine cracked, contents toned and foxed throughout, a few headlines trimmed. First edition. 56 pp. 8vo. A sammelband of 16 tracts, including the first edition of Burnet's Introduction to volume 3 of his History of the Reformation as well as Swift's reply (his Preface to B[ishop] of S[a]r[u]m's Introduction). Burnet painted Popery as the deadliest of evils, and suggested that only Whig bishops, such as himself, could resist it. Swift, having switched to the Tory cause just a few years before, "makes the church his real theme [and] abandons impersonation; and if there are some playful fantasies and much sarcasm among his provisions, they are kept subordinate to the dignity of the main essay. Swift writes with a grave, self-conscious intensity ..." (Ehrenpreis, Swift II, p. 694). The complete contents of the sammelbands follows: [NEWTON, William]. The Principles of the Low-Church-Men ... (33 x 21 cms.). Tomo I: 11 hs. (incluidos frontis y portada) + 429 págs. + 11hs.

         I. Muscari obsoleto albo flore. II. Muscari floribus, III. Hyacinthus stellaris Bizantinus.

Nuremburg 1713 - Copper-engraving, with fine hand colour. Dimensions: 535 x 425mm. (21 by 16.75 inches) A magnificent plate from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden. Besler was asked to complete the work by Gemmingen in 1606; the huge nature of the task was clear to Besler and he enlisted the help of his younger brother Hieronymus and Ludwig Jungermann, a nephew of Camerarius. Printing the Hortus may have begun as early as 1607. Drawings were made in situ and from specimens sent by the Bishop to Nuremberg; the Bishop reported to Hainhofer that he had boxes of fresh flowers sent every week to Besler at Nuremberg for sketching. A team of at least 10 engravers were employed to translate the drawings to copperplates. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destroyed by the invading Swedish troops under Herzog Bernhard von Weimar in 1633-4, although they were partially restored by later bishops. Many of the original drawings survive in the University Library, Erlangen.

Chez Pierre Ribou, Paris 1713 - 12 mo. Volumes 1-4: Les Six Voyages De Monsieur Jean-Baptiste Tavernier Ecuyer Baron d'Aubonne, en Turquie, en Perse et aux Indes.[50]-501-[3]-465-[3]-402-[3]-367-[5]/ Volume V: Recueil de plusieurs relations et traitez singuliers et curieux de Mr Tavernier. qui n'ont point été mis dans ses six premiers voyages .467-[4] / Volume VI: Nouvelle relation de l'intérieur du sérail du grand Seigneur, contenant plusieurs singularitez qui jusqu'ici n'ont point été mises en lumière., frontispiece portrait of Tavernier in Persian costume, 1 title frontispiece dated 1712 + 60 plates & maps (of which 5 folding maps + 55 plates of which 46 are folding ones), contemporary full calf, title gilt on raised decorated spine & printed in red & black, previous owners’ name inscribed on title page, set in good condition, rubbed edges of 2 volumes. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was a 17th-century French gem merchant and traveller. "Tavernier, a private individual and merchant travelling at his own expense, covered by his own account: 60,000 leagues, 120,000 miles making six voyages to Persia and India between the years 1630-1668. In 1675, Tavernier, at the behest of his patron, Louis XIV, published Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (Six Voyages, 1676). Tavernier was born in Paris of a French or Flemish Huguenot family that had emigrated to Antwerp to escape persecution and subsequently returned to Paris after the publication of the Edict of Nantes which promised protection for French Protestants. Both his father Gabriel and his uncle Melchior were cartographers. Though it is clear from the accuracy of his drawings that Tavernier received some instruction in the art of cartography/engraving, he was possessed of a wanderlust and while still a teenager travelled extensively through Europe and achieved a working knowledge of its major languages. Tavernier is best known for the discovery/purchase of the 116 carat Tavernier Blue Diamond that he subsequently sold to Louis XIV of France in 1668 for 120,000 pounds the equivalent of 172,000 ounces of pure gold and a letter of ennoblement. (Five years later, Louis had his court jeweller Jean Pitau reset the stone into the 68 carat French Blue and had it set as a hat pin. The gem was reset by his great-grandson Louis XV in The Medal of The Order of the Golden Fleece, stolen in 1792 and was cut again and re-emerged in London 30 years later as The Hope Diamond). In 1669 Tavernier purchased for 60,000 livres the Seigneury of Aubonne, located in the Duchy of Savoy near the city of Geneva and became Baron of Aubonne. Tavernier's writings show that he was a keen observer as well as a remarkable cultural anthropologist. His book became a best seller and was translated into German, Dutch, Italian and English during his lifetime. The work is frequently quoted by modern scholars writing of the period. At the upper site of the covers two chain attachments, where a chain could be attached to carry the book. Both covers of the professionally restored binding are decorated with frames of flowers, lines and little portraits of saints. Beautiful early 17th-century binding, possibly originating from a (Belgian ?) monastery. 8o: pi 8 A - Hh 8 I 4, foliated: [8], CCXLVIII, [4]. Title printed in red and black. With 12 small woodcuts of the months and many woodcut text illustrations, 4 of which signed with the monogram HCvS, probably referring to Hans Christoffel van Sichem. With a 18th-century ownership mark by Martinus Martinus Jacobs, ‘woende in den ee vent [convent?] tot Mechelen' (dated 1713). The ‘hortulus animae' [little garden of the soul] was a popular prayer book, both in Latin and other languages in the sixteenth century. The first known edition was printed at Strasburg by William Schaffener of Rappeltsweiler in 1498. After that year new editions with various supplements and modifications were constantly issued by other printers. The present Dutch adaptation was made by the Belgian dominican author Damianus van den Houte (? - after 1577), and originally published in 1552. The popularity of this Dutch version is shown by the number of editions that followed, many of which were printed in Antwerp. In 1584 an edition appeared with woodcuts by Arnold Nicolai, which were used again in subsequent editions, i.g. the edition printed in 1606 by Jan van Keerberghen. The present copy, however, is printed after that Antwerp edition and is in fact printed later. The woodcuts by Nicolai are replaced by others, such as a series a woodcuts of the months which may well have been intended for use in a small type of almanac. Four of the other woodcuts are signed with the monogram HCvS, which bears great resemblance tot the well known monogram of Christoffel van Sichem. This monogram in no to be found in Nagler or any other of the usual reference works. However, a son of Christoffel van Sichem I by the name of Hans Christoffel van Sichem (born Johannes Christophorus in Basel, ca. 1580) was active in Leiden in the early 17th century. In 1603 he calls himself ‘figuersnijder' [woodcutter]. Forster suggests that he worked with his father and two other brothers (Christoffel II and Carel van Sichem) in some kind of a family company, first in Leiden and later in Amsterdam. These facts point to Leiden as the place of origin for the present edition of the Hortulus Animae, but further typographical research is necessary to unveal the anonymus printer. B0074.          A Representation of the Royal Fire-Work preform'd by the directions of Coll. Hopkey and Coll. Borgard on the River Thames before Whitehall, ye 7th of July 1713, being ye day appointed for a publick Thanksgiving for the General Peace

London, 1713. Mezzotint on laid paper, engraved by and after Lens. Plate mark: 20 3/4 x 16 3/8 inches. Sheet size: 23 3/8 x 18 1/4 inches. Provenance: Christopher Lennox-Boyd (Christie's 12 March 2008, lot 57). Rare early mezzotint of fireworks over the River Thames: from the noted collection of Christopher Lennox-Boyd.The event celebrated with fireworks was the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. Acclaimed for his skill as an engraver, and particularly for his mezzotints, Bernard Lens II established a drawing school in the 1690s in St. Pauls Churchyard. The present mezzotint is a fine example of his work, wonderfully displaying his skill at depicting scenic effects at night.Engraver and artist Bernard Lens II was the father of better-known miniaturist Bernard Lens III. Father and son collaborated on several joint projects. In 1710, a delegation of four Native American leaders, three Mohawk from the Iroquois alliance (Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow of the Bear Clan, called King of Maguas); Ho Nee Yeath Taw No Row of the Wolf Clan, called King of Canajoharie; and Tee Yee Ho Ga Row, of the Wolf Clan, also called King Hendrick) and one Mohican from the Algonquin nations (Etow Oh Koam of the Turtle Clan), traveled to the Court of Queen Anne in London. Arranged by Pieter Schuyler, mayor of Albany, New York, the delegation traveled to London with British military leaders seeking support against the French and their allied Native interests in North America. On the last day of their stay in London, Bernard Lens III produced miniature portraits of the "Four Kings"; Bernard Lens II copied these portraits in mezzotint, producing one of the most celebrated 18th century English engravings of Native Americans.Cf. Chaloner Smith, p. 813.
