HUYGENS' TREATISE ON OPTICS, LENSES, TELESCOPES, MICROSCOPES AND HIS FAMOUS COPERNICAN ORRERY [ETC.]. First edition. This is the very rare first edition of Huygens' posthumous work on astronomy and optics, and especially the manufacture and polishing of glass lenses, including the main treatise, "Dioptrica," as one of 6 separate parts. The other parts offer assessment of the telescope, the grinding of lenses, the collision of elastic bodies , his studies on centrifugal force (first written in 1659), and the planisphere automaton, which was the first Copernican Orrery, executed by Johannes van Ceulen, 1682. Huygens describes Telescopes (pp.163-220, 245-248, 265+) and Microscopes in the first section (pp. 221-263). The work was jointly edited by Burcherus de Volder (1643-1709), and Bernhardus Fullenius the Younger (1640-1707), named in the preface. Huygens' Dioptrica, includes "the law of refraction, the determination of the focuses of lenses and spheres and of refraction indices, the structure of the eye, the shape of lenses for spectacles, the theory of magnification, and the construction of telescopes." - DSB, VI, p. 603. Contents: Dioptrica; Commentarii de Formandis Poliendisque Vitris ad Telescopia; Dissertatio de Coronis et Parheliis; De Motu Corporum ex Percussione; De Vi Centrifuga; Descriptio Automati Planetarii. PROVENANCE: This volume was purchased by William Rainey Harper in Berlin in 1891 as part of the core collection of nearly 100,000 volumes. "While vacationing in Berlin with his family some fifteen months before the new University of Chicago was scheduled to open in 1892, William Rainey Harper came across a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. G. Heinrich Simon of S. Calvary and Company [this book is still marked "Calvary," in pencil], a world renowned bookselling firm that was going to close its doors, wanted to sell off his massive stock en bloc. After some negotiating, the two men agreed upon a final price of $45,000." - 'An Acquisition of Inestimable Value': The Men Who Funded the Berlin Collection. 2016 by Michael L. Cardoza with Catherine Mardikes.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Some minor wear to extremities and marks to boards, occasional foxing, otherwise a bright, fresh copy in excellent condition. First edition in English, first published as De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo in 1672. The legal theorist, historian and theologian Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) was the first professor of the Law of Nature and of Nations in a German university at Heidelberg. In his works on political science "he attempted to strike a middle path between the rationalism of Grotius and the voluntarism of Hobbes. He envisaged the state of nature as a war of all against all, from which men would wish to save themselves by joining in a society whose laws were imposed by the ruler's will. But he also argued that such laws must conform to natural law, whose duties he maintained, unlike Grotius, were imposed on man by God's will … In preference to Grotius's a posteriori method, he adopted a sociological form of inquiry into man's condition in society" (The New Palgrave III, p. 1074).

Leipzig & Dresden. Johann Christoph Miethen. 1703. [iv], 210, 287, [1] pages. Titles in red and black, woodcut frontispiece in part 1 showing a cockerel - repeated on verso of the last leaf, 1 folding table, diagrams and numerous tables in the text. Modern half calf, titled in blind over marbled boards. 8vo. Binding: 167 x 107 mm.Small repair to 1 leaf in part 2, with loss of page number and 1 letter only. However, a good copy overall. This is the first complete edition of this curious book - part 1 only was first published in 1695. The title states that the name of the author is contained in the A B C, and most probably it is there in all the anagrams and puzzles in the book, but his name has not been discovered. A rare work on the significance of the letters of the alphabet - mystical, musical, historical and alchemical. The book is full of puzzles, anagrams, ciphers, codes etc., and it has been the subject of scholarly study particularly relating to Bach's music and whether he was influenced by this book.

DAI MIN KYUHEN BANKOKU JINSEKI ROTEI ZENZU: GREAT MAP OF CHINA AND IT'S SURROUND

      - Japan c.[1703]. Original gray rubbed silk covers, a Japanese reprint of the 1663 Chinese map, neatly rebacked,127 x 137.5 cm., a few old mended worm holes, minor flaws, hand colored, folds down to 21.5 x 34 cm. R A R E FIRST & ONLY EDITION Translation of the Chinese Title: continued: "WITH THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY AND ALL ROADS." . Chinese pinyin title is: DA MING JIU BIAN WAN GUO, REN JI LU CHEN QUAN TU. . *** A marvelous and grand size example. The work basically shows the whole country and its surrounding areas. Minor tears, most repaired, some old stains & repaired worming, actually quite nice. Remarkable in its detail and features. It shows the Great Wall at the top, or Northern orientation, geographic features include: rivers, lakes, cities and villages, mountains are painted in green. With a list of foreign countries at the left margin, showing the distance in "Ri" or miles. Important administrative areas in red outline, islands named, the sea around the whole country is done in a stylistic wave pattern set in the middle of an ocean border. Includes China's East coast, Shanghai &c. . *** At the East are islands of the "Women, Long People, Hairy People" &c. Essentially a grand world map, with China occupying the center, other countries shown on the exterior of the map. With a list & explanation on Chinese cities at the bottom, with commentaries on each of the provinces to the right. European countries are shown to the West, each properly named. The whole map is hand-colored with gouache or pastel water colors. There are four marginal stamped cinnabar collector's seals. . *** CONDITION: The map was re-backed professionally a about 100 years ago. There is some loss in a couple of the folds, please see the scans to observe this, else some minor old worming but restored from the verso. Now solid and stable. . There are some old stains on the edges & in the folds, this does not penetrate to the front, if it does the color of the map ameliorates this. By and large a nice work in good plus condition. . Finding maps of this enormous size and subject are difficult, it goes without saying, that we can not always fine pristine examples that have resided in Japan where insects love to eat this kind of hand-made Washi paper. Seldom found for sale anywhere these days. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: This exact map has been cited and illustrated in: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID 19TH CENTURY, plate #23, on pages 50-51. The Oda example is mostly without color, while ours is nicely hand-colored. *** Suitable for framing and wall display. Maps of this period, subject & grand size are exceptionally S C A R C E. . *** Actual scans (incl. one from the book of Oda's descriptive [Japanese] text) are posted to our website.

         Arithmetic, called the computational science].

Moskva Sinodalna 1703 - Folio (28 x 17 cm). ll. 326, including title, printed in Cyrillic letters in red and black within typographic borders, with engraved frontispiece and plate by Mikhail Karnovskii and 3 folding letterpress tables, numerous woodcut figures in text; some leaves remargined and with tears mostly to inner margin, occasionally with minor loss of text, lacking 1 plate (last plate), red wax seals to upper fly leaf, title and first page. Near contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with blind tooled decor in compartments; worn. One of the most important books printed during the reign of Peter the Great. Leontii Magnitskii (1669 – 1739), a prominent Russian scientist and professor at the School of Mathematics and Navigation, compiled the present work as a kind of encyclopaedia of exact sciences on the orders of Peter the Great, issued in February 1701. Magnitskii included the most up to date information on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, astronomy and navigation with the aim of 'educat[ing] Russian young men and people of all the ranks and ages.' Even more significantly, it was here that he introduced Arabic, rather than traditional Cyrillic, numbers for the first time. Lomonosov himself used this work in his studies, referring to it as 'the gates of knowledge.' Published in an edition of 2400 copies, it was used widely as a textbook for almost a century, and is something of a rarity, especially when complete. Magnitskii's work reflects the progressive thinking that started to dominate during the reign of Peter the Great.       Oxford: printed by L. Lichfield, for A. and J. Churchil, & 10 others, 1703 - Folio (313 x 200 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, rebacked to style, red morocco spine label, raised bands, compartments decorated and ruled in gilt, boards ruled and decorated with fleurons in blind, edges sprinkled red. Some minor wear to extremities and marks to boards, occasional foxing, otherwise a bright, fresh copy in excellent condition. 19th-century ownership inscription of William Hodges Tylden Pattenson to front pastedown, dated 1857. But he also argued that such laws must conform to natural law, whose duties he maintained, unlike Grotius, were imposed on man by God's will In preference to Grotius's a posteriori method, he adopted a sociological form of inquiry into man's condition in society" (The New Palgrave III, p. 1074).          Instrumentall Musick For New Years day 1703. Composed by Jo.n Lenton.

[London, 1703]. - Oblong 8vo. Musical manuscript in English, on paper written in a single cursive hand in brown ink, four staves to a page. 12 leaves: blank, title, dedication, 11 pp. of music on 6 leaves, 3 blanks. Dedication to Queen Anne on second recto. In a contemporary morocco binding, exuberantly tooled and gilt by Robert Steel, arguably the finest binder in England at the time; board edges gilt, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. An exquisite musical manuscript, composed and bound for royal presentation on New Years' Day (then celebrated on Lady Day, March 25). Inscribed to Queen Anne of England. Signed "J.L." at the end, the pieces are marked "Overture", "Minuett" (bass), "Minuett" and "Scotch Air", one passage to be played "slow". - The violinist, singer and composer Lenton joined the ensemble of royal musicians, known as the King's Musick, in 1681 under Charles II and played at the coronations of James II and of William and Mary (cf. New Grove X, 665). As violinist, Lenton accompanied William to Holland in 1691 and contributed to the royal musical repertoire. He wrote incidental music for some dozen plays between 1682 and 1705 and accumulated the offices of Gentleman Extraordinary at the Royal Chapel (1685) and Groom of the Vestry (1708). The binder Robert Steel (fl. 1668-1711) apprenticed with Samuel Mearne and took possession of his tools after his death in 1686. In turn, one of Steel's workmen, Thomas Elliott, secured Mearne's tools and became a principal binder for the Harleian Library. - In fine condition: the splendid binding shows a repeated flower-and-foliage tool flanked by rules forming the outer frame; the panels have small fleurons and lobate tools at left and right from which spring billowy sails and branches with clusters of grapes and curled leaves; a gilt-lettered title "Lenton New Year 1703" fills the central cartouche of drawer handles; concentric circles and fleurons cover the spine. For the binding cf. Maggs Bros., Bookbinding in the British Isles Catalogue 1075 (1987), no. 118 (the outer frame tool, there called a roll) and Catalogue 1212 (1996), no. 70 (frame tool), as well as Foot, The Henry Davis Gift II, no. 148.          Two scrolls, 257 x 11,900 mm. & 257 x 12,570 mm., each containing stamped & hand-colored depictions of soldiers in formation

      - At the end of the second scroll: "Created in 1703 according to Takeda family traditions." Two remarkable and rare scrolls, "printed" using small woodcut stamps on fine shiny paper. The scrolls depict a military commander and his troops taking up positions before a battle as practiced by the Takeda family, one of the most important military families in Japanese history. The soldiers and horses have been stamped onto the scroll and then hand-colored; uma-jirushi (battle standards) and banners are painted in with brushes. Hatamoto ("under the banners") were samurai in direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate. They commanded sonae (regiments). About fifteen different and highly detailed stamps are employed in the scrolls. The hand-coloring gives them enormous variety; each squad of soldiers are "dressed" in different colored garb based on their function and rank. The hand-drawn battle standards and banners are colored in a wide variety of tones and shapes denoting different units. The colors include red, yellow, black, brown, green, dark and sky blue, white, pale red, etc. The first scroll begins with infantry, including one soldier beating on a drum carried by another soldier. There are several on horses carrying banners. Their uniforms and body armor are vividly portrayed. Ashigaru (foot soldiers) are carrying bows and arrows as well as muskets. Several different kinds of bugyo (swordsmen) are shown. Heishi (lower level samurai) surround the horsemen carrying banners. We also see shibusha (messengers or runners), sakuba (back-up horses), hokogashira (another kind of foot soldier), mushabugyo (formations of soldiers), hatabugyo (formations of soldiers carrying banners), and metsukebusha (higher rank samurai). The second scroll depicts mochiyaribugyo (spear carriers), gusoku (soldiers carrying additional footwear), taisho (generals), ishi (military doctors) protected by soldiers, shibusha again, kinshushi (letter writers), yonin (high ranking generals led by drummers), shinshugashira (commanders of untested soldiers), yakunin (government observers), kunizuke busha (departmental observers), konida bugyo (troops escorting supplies carried by horses), ninpu (low level workers). At the end of the second scroll, it is written that there are a total of 1392 soldiers depicted on the two scrolls as well as 123 horses (87 horses for riding and 36 for transport of goods). The beginning of the scrolls contain gold and silver speckled "endpapers." In fine condition preserved in a modern box. The National Diet Library has a similar example (but only one scroll).
