Miscellany Poems: The First Part. Containing Variety of New Translations of the Ancient Poets. Together with Several Original Poems, By the Most Eminent Hands. Sylvae: or, The Second Part of Poetical MiscellaniesExamen Poeticum: Being The Third Part of Miscellany Poems. Containing Variety of New Translations of the Ancient Poets. Together with many Original Copies, by the Most Eminent Hands

Publish'd by Mr. Dryden. Printed for Jacob Tonson 1702; 1702; 1693, London - 3 vols.: [8], 399; [38], 306, [4]; [40], 468, [16], 78 p. 20 cm. Full leather bindings. Raised bands and gilt impressing on spines. Burgundy spine labels with gilt lettering. Corners worn. Some spotting to text block edges of first two volumes. Vol. I has repaired front free endpaper. Worm holes throughout bottom margins of vol. II and a rear endpaper removed. Small ink notations on front free endpaper and half titles of vol. III and small tear at bottom of p. 45 in rear section. The series of miscellanies of which these three volumes form a part was the most influential of its era, and served as a model for later anthologies. The publisher Jacob Tonson and the then Poet Laureate John Dryden joined forces in 1684 to create this popular collection of short, previously unpublished verses by several writers. Dryden's role was partly to contribute, partly to solicit contributions, and partly to edit and assist contributors. Although Dryden's own works, such as Mac Flecknoe and Absolom & Achitophel, are included in these volumes, the many translations of classical authors such as Ovid, Horace, and Virgil helped to foster a taste for verse translations of the classics. Note the poem "Syphilus" at the end of vol. III: originally written by the Italian physician Girolamo Fracastoro in 1530, it was translated from Latin to English by Nahum Tate. Vols. I & II are Third Editions, vol. III is first edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, Begun in the Year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660

Printed at the Theater 1702-1704, Oxford - 3 vols.: xxiii, 557; [16], 581; [22], 603, [22] p. 39 cm. Portrait frontispieces of Clarendon by White after Lely. Title page vignettes, decorated initials, and engraved head and tail pieces. Full leather bindings with raised bands and gilt-decorated panels. Gilt and blank impressing to boards. All edges red. Some cracking to hinges, wear to edges and corners, chips to spine leather, and rubbing to boards. Pages generally neat and clean. Vol. I has a few small spots in margins, and a small ink notation on p. 7. Bottom corner chipped on rear free endpaper in vol. II. Vol. III has mark on front cover, small mark on text block edge, slightly rough edge to last pages, and some soiling to margins in rear index pages. English statesman and historian Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon (1609 – 1674) was always loyal to his king, becoming a key figure for the Royalist cause and serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer after the Restoration in 1660. This three-volume detailed account was the most influential contemporary history of the English Civil War. The original publication of the History was part of a publishing war between supporters of the rival Roundheads and Cavaliers. The publication of the Roundhead Edmund Ludlow's Memoirs in 1698-1699 was a sensational success and led to a spate of Roundhead Civil War memoirs. In 1701 the Tories began a counter-attack by printing the Cavalier memoirs of Sir Philip Warwick, followed in the next year by the first volume of Clarendon's History and the memoirs of Sir Thomas Herbert, Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Charles I. Clarendon wrote portions of this work at different times with different objects. He wrote his original History between 1646 and 1648, but only recorded events to March 1644. Perhaps he hoped that his interpretation of recent errors would instruct the king or his son in the future. After being banished from England during the Commonwealth, he wrote his autobiographical Life between 1668 and 1670. He then revised the History in 1671 by incorporating the Life into it and writing new sections covering events after March 1644. It was his sons who offered the original manuscript to Oxford. After much editorial correction, the three-part work was published beginning in 1702. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         Antique Print-WORLD MAP-Scherer-c. 1702

      - Antique print, titled: 'Typus Totius Orbis Terraquei Geographice Delineatus, Et Ad Usum Globo Materiali Superinducendus' - Beautiful example of Scherer's map of the World, configured in 12 globe gores. California is shown as an island. Fascinating Northwest Passage treatment. Excellent detail in Australia and a nice bit of New Zealand shown, along with a curious oversized Tierra Del Fuego. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Heinrich Scherer' after an anonymous artist. Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a Professor of Hebrew, Mathematics and Ethics at the University of Dillingen until about 1680. Thereafter he obtained important positions as Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria. It was during his time in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria that his lifetime’s work as a cartographer received acclaim and recognition. Scherer’s world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: BG-B6-13 Iscra The overall size is ca. 16.2 x 10.7 inch. The image size is ca. 13.7 x 8.5 inch. The overall size is ca. 41.2 x 27.1 cm.          Lexicon graeco-latinum in Novum Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Testamentum : nominum tam propriorum quam appellativorum significatus atque analysin complexum. Editio correctior

Jo. Fried. Gleditschi, Lipsiae (Leipzig) 1702 - 12mo (7 1/4 x 5"). [28], 1752 columns (876pp), [400]pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Title page in red and black lettering. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Originally published in Herborn in 1619, Georg Pasor's koine Greek* and Latin dictionary of the New Testament is, according to Adolf Deissmann in his "Light from the Ancient East" (1927), "the first lexicon to the New Testament."However, Deissman's claim has recently come under some criticism by John Lee, who shows (in his "History of New Testament Lexicography" (2003) that Pasor's work relies heavily on the work of his predecessors (especially Stephanus). Pasor does, however, seem to be the first NT lexicographer to divide his entries into senses, and his work dominated the field of NT lexicography throughout the 17th century. (For more information, see: J. William Johnston's "The Use of PAS in the New Testament" (2004)).Binding age-toned, partly darkened and soiled. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Title page detached but present. Contemporary previous owner's inscription dated 1713 at lower margin of title page (not affecting lettering). Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Latin and Greek. Binding in overall good-, interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Georg Pasor (1570-1637) was a philologist and private teacher, who later became professor of Greek and Hebrew at the university of Herborn, and in 1626, professor of Greek at the university of Franeker. * Before Alexander the Great, the Greek language was an assortment of localized dialects. Alexander wanted a Greek language common to all peoples. It was called 'koine' or common. By the time the New Testament was written (mid to late 1st century A.D.) koine Greek had become the common language in Israel. Koine Greek became more popular in Rome than Latin. One reason was Rome's acceptance of all cult religions as long as the Emperor was worshipped as well. One of the titles of the Emperor was the koine word, "kurios," which means "Lord." It was a divine title of the emperor! It was the main word used by the LXX (Septuagint) translators of the Old Testament when they translated the Hebrew word YHVH. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Amsterdam, Mortier, 1702 - 9 Bll., 348 S.; 3 Bll., 386 S., 1 Bl. mit einigen Vignetten in Kupferstich. 1 Kupfer-Frontisp., 179 (teils gefalt, teils doppelblattgr.) Kupfertafeln und 7 gefalt. Tabellen. - Pierre Surirey de Saint-Rémy drafted a full inventory of artillery rules and a techniques in his Mémoires d’artillerie. He noted the smallest details of military life, from the calibre of cannonballs to the distribution of munitions among the troops. The many plates illustrate various weapons and show shops or arsenals.

Brunet II, 699. Tagli a spruzzo. Testatine, capilettera elegantemente decorati a racemi e fregi tipografici n.t. ornati in xilografia. Testo in latino in carattere tondo e in francese in carattere corsivo. Lozzi, II, 4914, note. Fondo Olschki, 733.
