Carte Nouvelle de L’Amerique Angloise Contenant La Virginie, Mary-Land, Caroline, Pensylvania Nouvelle Iorck. N: Iarsey N: France, et Les Terres Nouvellement Decouerte Dresse sur les Relations les Plus Nouvelles par le Sieur S a Amsterdam Chez Pierre Mortier Libraire Avec Privilege de nos Seigneurs les Etats

      c. 1700 - 59 x 91 cm. Coloreado a mano. Márgenes estrechos. Muy buen estado de conservación.

         Bolivia

1700s - 1800s. The letters span from the 1700s to the 1800s and most are addressed to Francisco Ruiz De Sorzano, a very important man during the colonial period in the La Paz area of today Bolivia. He had important business relations with Peru, and was the owner of lands in what today is the border between Peru and Bolivia. He was also possibly a descendant of the King of Spain. The letters deal with commerce and various historical accounts. This collection is rife with untapped material and will be a true treasure to historians specializing in Bolivian culture. While many letters still have wax seal remnants, most do not have postal markings meaning they were undoubtedly hand carried in the 1700s. Sorzano's great great grandson, Jose Luis Tejada Sorzano, became President of Bolivia during the Chaco War. Sorzano was the Vice President at the time but was elected President after Daniel Salamanca Urey was forced to resign. The Chaco War was a costly conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay. Hostile incidents began as early as 1928 over the Chaco Boreal, a wilderness region of about 100,000 square miles (259,000 square km) north of the Pilcomayo River and west of the Paraguay River that forms part of the Gran Chaco. The conflict stemmed from the outcome of the War of the Pacific (1879-84), in which Chile defeated Bolivia and annexed that nation's entire coastal region. Thereafter, Bolivia attempted to break out of its landlocked situation through the Río de La Plata system to the Atlantic coast; athwart that route lay the Gran Chaco, which the Bolivians thought had large oil reserves. Paraguay formally declared war on May 10, 1933 launching a series of attacks along an extended front late in October and made such impressive gains that the Bolivian president Daniel Salamanca replaced Kundt with General Enrique Peñaranda. After Bolivian counterattacks put Paraguayan forces on the defensive, a truce was arranged on June 12, 1935. About 100,000 men lost their lives in the war. A peace treaty was arranged by the Chaco Peace Conference, which included Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States. It was signed in Buenos Aires on July 21, 1938. Paraguay gained clear title to most of the disputed region, but Bolivia was given a corridor to the Paraguay River and a port (Puerto Casado). The war had caused disruption of the Bolivian economy, provoking demands for reform among the deprived Bolivian masses. Argentina was given the main credit for the settlement, and Argentine investors profited greatly from Paraguay's territorial gain. Sorzano as president had a responsibility to bring an end to the disastrous Chaco War. By June 1935, a ceasefire was reached with Paraguay, however, the terms granted most of the Chaco Boreal region to Paraguay, reducing Bolivia's territory considerably. This earned Tejada the disdain of the military and he was removed from office in a coup d'etat led by generals José David Toro and Germán Busch a year later.

Printed on two sheets and joined. Published by Pieter Schenk junior from the plate by Nicolaas Visscher. With 2 beautiful cartouches. Copperplate engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Nicolaes Visscher' after 'Pieter Schenk'. For nearly a century the members of the Visscher family were important art dealers and map publishers in Amsterdam. The founder of the business, C. J. Visscher, had premises near to those of Pieter van den Keere and Jodocus Hondius whose pupil he may have been. From about 1620 he designed a number of individual maps, including one of the British Isles, but his first atlas consisted of maps printed from plates bought from van den Keere and issued as they stood with some additions of his own, including historical scenes of battles and sieges for which he had a high reputation. Some maps bear the latinized form of the family name: Piscator. After Visscher's death his son and grandson, both of the same name, issued a considerable number of atlases, constantly revised and brought up to date but most of them lacking an index and with varying contents. The widow of Nicholaes Visscher II carried on the business until it finally passed into the hands of Pieter Schenk. Pieter Schenk / Petrus Schenck ( 1660-1718/19) was born in Germany, but settled in Amsterdam where he first became a pupil of Gerard Valck, the engraver. In 1687 he married Valck's sister and thereafter the Schenk and Valck families were active over a long period with a wide range of interests as print sellers, publishers of books, maps, topographical and architectural drawings and globes. Although they produced some original maps, most of their atlases consisted of printings from revised and re-worked plates originally by Jansson, the Visschers, the Sansons and others.
