Dissegno della citta di Mondovi in Piemonte.

Amsterdam (but possibly the Hague): Joannes Blaeu (or Adriaen Moetjens) 1697 - [?1697] copper engraved city view on two sheets, oblong folio, 460 x 1055mm. (to plate edge), 510 x 1130mm. (to frame edge), twentieth century black and gilt frame, unglazed, slight disjoint where two sheets conjoined, some faint marks to blank borders, two faint crease marks where the plate was folded when part of bound volume, printer’s information in central cartouche very faint, frame cracked at lower edge, some chipping to frame’s border A clean, clear and crisp copy of one of the most desirable prints from a monumental seventeenth century topographical masterpiece. Toscano’s original panoramic or bird’s eye drawing of Mondovi, showing the city, and its monastery behind, with the river Elero in the foreground, upon which the plate is based has been dated to 1662 by Luigi Firpo in his Theatrum Sabaudiae (Turin, 1984-85).  The engraved version first appeared as plate 33 (folios 119 and 120) in part II of Theatrum statuum regiae Celsitudinis Sabaudiae ducis, Pedemonti principis printed by Blaeu in 1682. The printer’s information in the central cartouche of the present copy is very faint and has evidently been deliberately erased from the copper plate. This points to a later impression, quite possibly from Moetjens’ 1697 edition printed in the Hague. The key at the lower part of the engraving lists 58 places of interest within the city. The gigantic piece of self-aggrandisement that was the two volume Theatrum statuum was designed to show off the lands of Duke Charles Emmanuel II to best effect, and was designed in particular as a sort of calling card to other leading European grandees. The work was undertaken by Joannes Bleau, a famed cartographer and publisher in Amsterdam, and was reissued a number of times in the following fifty years. Literature: Maria Paola Marabotto. L’arte del descrivere. Disegni et incisioni nel Theatrum statuum regiae Celsitudinis Sabaudiae ducis (Syracuse, 2010); Krogt, P.C.J. van der, Koeman’s Atlantes Neerlandici New Edition: Volume IV-1: The Town Atlases [by] Braun & Hogenberg, Janssonius, Blaeu, De Wit, Mortier and others (Houten, 2010), 43.331.Savoy 43 Other copies of the engraving traced: At auction: Ketterer Kunst, Hamburg, Sale 22 May 2007, lot 913, from the 1697 edition, described as browned and spotted with a long tear, sold for € 1,200; Rheiss and Sohn, Sale 20 April 2005, lot 98, stated to be from the 1682 edition, described as foxed and creased, sold for € 1624.         1697 Hunting Fowling Fishing Falconry Hawks Birds Game Gentleman’s Recreation

London : Printed by I. Dawks for D. Browne and N. Rolls, 1697. Fourth edition. - 1697 Hunting Fowling Fishing Falconry Hawks Birds Game Gentleman’s Recreation A fine and highly desirable late 17th-century printing of Nicholas Cox’s ‘Gentleman’s Recreation’ – a book dedicated to outdoor sports, hunting, and fishing. It tells of ‘forest laws’ and regulations, tips and tricks, sporting equipment and care, types of game and birds, and two charming folding engravings. According to Schwerdt, Cox's book is well composed, comprehensive, and compact. It fills a space in the not overcrowded list of old English hunting and hawking books and certainly compares favorably with John Ray's additions to the 'Ornithology,' which deal with fowling and hawking" (Schwerdt, 123). Westwood and Satchell detail Cox’s section on fishing. “Nicholas Cox is of the superstitious, astrological, necromantical order of angling writers. He makes us acquainted with divers miraculous streams and unaccountable fishes.” (W&S, 68) Item number: #1827 Price: $750 COX, Nicholas The gentleman's recreation : in four parts : viz. hunting, hawking, fowling, fishing : wherein these generous exercises are largely treated of, and the terms of art for hunting and hawking more amply enlarged than heretofore : also the method of breeding and managing a hunting-horse : whereto is prefix'd a large sculpture giving easie directions for blowing the horn, and other sculptures inserted proper to each recreation. London : Printed by I. Dawks for D. Browne and N. Rolls, 1697. Fourth edition.         Physica curiosa, sive mirabilia naturae et artis. . . Editio tertia juxta exemplar secunda editionis auctioris.

Herbipoli:: Excudit Jobus Hertz, Sumptibus Wolfgangi Mauritii Endteri, 1697., 1697. 22 cm. 4to. [20] ff., 1389 pp., [10] ff. Engraved half-title, title printed in red & black, hundreds of striking illustrations (several folding), index; foxed. Modern quarter antique-style calf, gilt-decorated compartments, dark red gilt-stamped label, marbled boards, endleaves. Short old Greek ink inscription on corner of title, translated, means: "everywhere the truth" [literal], thus "seek the truth everywhere." Very good copy. PRIMARY SOURCE FOR THE MAGICAL MONSTER & OTHER CREATURES. Third Edition (first issued in 1667) of an amazing encyclopedia of natural wonders, highly desired for its depictions of extraordinary figures and monstrous beings of both human and animals as well as fish, botanical or arboreal, and teratological phenomena. Caillet says this is the most complete treatise on demonology. "Schott's chief works, the MAGIA UNIVERSALIS and the two companion volumes, PHYSICA CURIOSA and TECHNICA CURIOSA, are huge, uncritical collections, mines of quaint information in which significant nuggets must be extracted from a great deal of dross. Like many of his time, Schott believed that the principles of nature and art are best revealed in their exceptions. . . Although the 'natural curiosities' include some useful matter (such as on South American mammals), his syncretic attitude and taste for the abnormal made him far readier than most of his contemporaries to credit tales of ghosts, demons, and centaurs. All this writing about magic, both natural and supernatural, involved him in slight difficulties with the censors." - A.G. Keller for the DSB, XII, pp. 210-11. Engraved frontispiece engraved by Joachim von Sandrart, shows a Garden of Eden scene (no people), with both normal and abnormal animals (including the odd giraffe, a boar with two bodies, etc.). The remainder of the book distinguishes itself with a broad spectrum of brilliant and fantastical engraved figures, most derived from the imagination rather than fact, but sorting through that morass would have been difficult. The plates include: dragon (being slayed), elephant (p.886), mapach (p.905), rhinoceros (p.921), horse with fashionable stripes (p.603), pelican (p.1021), bear (p.927), su (p.923), lion (p.893), laguara (p.891), leopard (p.890), rabbit (p.890), paca (p.849), camel (p.829), giraffe ("Camelopar dalis"] (p.818), bison (p.808), armadillo (p. 788). In addition: constellations (p. 701), chicken monster ["Gallus Monstrosus"] (p. 619), beast with bisected arms, winged and hoofed, horns on fore & rear of head; three-headed monster with scales (p. 616). Humanoid-like monsters are aplenty: human monster with webbed appendages and 6 miniature heads (on arms, legs & chest), a pencil-thin nose, and bird-like feathers to the eye-temples, pig-ears; hoofed-creature standing with tail and maybe wearing the matador's cape!(p. 615); (p. 611): 3 figs., incl. man with a congenital twin whose chest passes through the standing man's chest "Monstrum monocephalon. . . " - two other monstrous human portions extruding from another, such that one sees four arms, four legs., etc.; (p. 610): congenital twin males being joined at the base of the spine, giving a mirrored image on the page; (p. 609): two more humanoid monsters; (p. 603): congenital twin with breasts and what appears to be a large penis, being actually three mixed-up figures in one; (p. 599): 6 human figures with bizarre deformities, including a man with no head (but his face is present on his chest), another with their feet turned the opposite way of normal; another being a cyclopes; another with the ears of a rabbit, but they flop down to his knees; (p. 595): 3 figures, including a boy with four arms from the elbow and four legs, another with apparent rubber legs and an egg-shell-shaped head, the third is a male child with no legs, his feet present, lacking some fingers (one arm deformed, the other appears normal). Some woodcuts of babies in the womb are shown with numerous positions (p. 481). Plate facing p. 395 showing 4 women with deformities including heads of a wolf, or the skin is fur and one is bearded. Many of the figures rank high in fantasy, such as facing p. 363, showing 4 figures almost beyond description (you have to see them to understand): a man with furry stubbed arms (cacti?) and a tree stump for his legs - another with fish-like body, dragon feet, breasts, ears of a cat and plenty of facial fur - another again more fish-like, wings, older breasts, demon-like face and nasty teeth - another with thick legs, body armor like the armadillo, and quite possibly a face to match as well a skin/wing cloak. (Page 614): 3 figures: a bizarre man with wings for arms, one normal leg, one leg with both scales and roots, a erect penis, "VXY" emblaze don his breast, a head that is a cross between a friendly lion and a goat with cat's ears, two hanging appendages from chest / a Mermaid with wings / a demon with animal feet, long tail, gryphon-like wings, lion-like claws, small armed, and a chameleon-like face. Gaspar Schott, born in Koenigshofen, Germany and died in in Augsburg, was a student in Sicily and later assistant of Kircher at the Roman College, then went back to Germany taking a position of professor of mathematics at Augsburg. The present work reflects the views of both persons, including some bizarre ideas about zoology and human anatomy. Schott "specialized in the fields of physics, mathematics, and natural philosophy. He wrote extensively on the mechanical developments of his time, and produced the first published account on Otto von Guericke's experiments on vacuums. His most famous works include MAGIA UNIVERSALIS, TECHNICA CURIOSA, and PHYSICA CURIOSA - essentially encyclopedias magical, mechanical, and natural history knowledge. Schott was a great compiler, and relied on an extensive library for his own research. Most of Schott's publications are aggregations of the writings and research existing on various topics." - BHL Staff. He practiced medicine before getting a license, but enrolled later at the University of Glasgow and received his M.D. degree in 1745. After training in obstetrics in London and Paris, he opened a practice in London and began teaching. He invented a "machine", an obstetrical manikin, for instructions. Smellie described the mechanism of labour, designed obstetrical forceps, devised a maneuver to deliver the head of a breech, and published his teachings. He is believed to have painted his own portrait. Use of forceps by W.Smellie The William Smellie Memorial Hospital which provided maternity services in Lanark closed in the early 1990s and was re-located to a unit at the Law Hospital in Carluke. This was also closed recently and maternity services moved to Wishaw General Hospital. It has been alleged that Smellie was involved with either murdering or showing a callous disregard for where his corpses came from (as well as his former pupil William Hunter, and brother John Hunter). The supporting evidence for this theory includes the large number of pregnant corpses Hunter was able to obtain. However, this is widely contested by scholars, and so the debate continues. The tomb in which William Smellie (and later his wife) was buried still stands in the St. Kentigerns section of the state run Lanark graveyard. (Wikipedia).

Erläuterung) und 6 Bl. Notenbeilage. Leder d. Zt. mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel. Erste Ausgabe. A. Hoffmanns Novelle 'Der Krieg der Sänger'. KING ARTHUR. An Heroick Poem. In Twelve Books. To which is annexed, an Index, explaining the names of countrys, citys, and rivers, &c.

London, Awnsham and John Churchil, and Jacob Tonson, 1697.. FIRST EDITION IN 12 BOOKS 1697, (the first edition appeared in ten books in 1695 under the title: Prince Arthur). Folio, approximately 330 x 200 mm, 13 x 8 inches, pages: Title page, i- xvii, [1] errata, 1-343, [8] - index, bound in full contemporary panelled calf, blind decoration to covers, sometime rebacked in lighter calf with raised bands, no lettering or label. Covers slightly worn and lightly pitted, small chip to surface on lower cover, corners slightly worn, inner paper hinges cracked, small pale water stain to title page, light crease to lower corner of title page and next few pages, slight worming to lower margin of title page persisting but decreasing to page 195, small pale damp stain to lower inner margin from page 335 to the end of the index, otherwise contents bright and clean. A very good tight copy. ESTC R235060. Sir Richard Blackmore (1654-1729) was a physician and a poet with a passion for writing epics. He supported the Glorious Revolution, and his first epic Prince Arthur (1695) was a celebration of William III. The poem was based on the form of Virgil's The Aeneid and the subject matter of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. It told of the Celtic King Arthur opposing the invading Saxons and taking London, which was a transparent encoding of William III opposing the "Saxon" James II and taking London. William made Blackmore physician-in-ordinary (a position he would hold with Queen Anne as well), gave him a gold medal, and knighted him in 1697. Among Blackmore's admirers were John Locke and Dr Johnson who did him the honour of writing his life for his Lives of the Poets. Blackmore's next epic, King Arthur, has the same hero "yet 'tis another entire poem" (author's Preface), not as some have stated an enlarged reworking of the Prince Arthur. It takes different episodes of his life from Geoffrey of Monmouth, namely the expedition to invade France and the conquest of Paris. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.         A Collection of Tracts, publish'd in Vindication of Mr. Lock's Reasonableness of Christianity, as delivered in the Scriptures; and of his Essay concerning Humane Understanding. London: A. And J. Churchill, 1697-1706.

      - First edition. Samuel Bold was one of five people to whom Locke presented copies of the fourth edition of the Essay concerning Humane Understanding (1700). Also, the Preface of Locke's Second Vindication of The Reasonableness of Christianity (1697) consists mostly of Locke's grateful letter of acknowledgement addressed 'To Mr. Bold'. This collection, behind its new main title-page dated 1706, contains first printings of all the following six works, each with its own original title-page: 'Bold was installed as rector at Steeple in Dorset in 1682. It was from there, in 1697, that he commenced the work for which he is chiefly remembered, his defence of John Locke. Locke's The Reasonableness of Christianity had appeared in 1695 and was immediately attacked as Socinian by the Calvinist John Edwards in Socinianism Unmasked (1696). Locke's own Vindication (1695) and Second Vindication (1697) of the Reasonableness of Christianity against Edwards were supported by Bold who, in 1697, entered the field with A Short Discourse of the True Knowledge of Christ Jesus in which he contended with Locke that Christ and the apostles considered it sufficient for a Christian to believe that Jesus was the Christ. Bold published two further works in that year, contra Edwards, in defence of Locke and his own Short Discourse, and in 1698 added Observations on the animadversions on a late book entituled, the Reasonableness of Christianity, again in defence of Locke. In 1699 Bold turned his attention to the vindication of Locke's other great work, the Essay Concerning Humane Understanding (1690) which by then was already in a second edition but which had attracted unfavourable comment. Bold's Some considerations on the principal objections and arguments against Mr. Locke's essay of humane understanding (1699), together with his earlier work in support of The Reasonableness of Christianity drew the comment that Bold was ‘one of the ablest advocates of Mr. Locke’ (Hutchins, 1.612), as well as Locke's own unstinted gratitude. Bold was frequently mentioned in Locke's correspondence with great regard and Locke wrote to him in 1699 ‘everything must be welcome to me that comes from your pen’ (N&Q, 137), although in 1703 when Bold visited Locke at Otes (or Oates) he was dissuaded by Locke from further publication. In 1706, however, after Locke's death, Bold's earlier publications in defence of Locke were republished, together with some of his more recent works, in A collection of tracts publish'd in vindication of Mr. Locke's Reasonableness of Christianity. One of these later works, A Discourse Concerning the Resurrection of the Same Body (1705), seems to have been generated by Bold's assimilation of Locke's views on human existence, resulting in a major shift in Bold's own thinking regarding the nature and destiny of man' (ODNB). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Six parts in one volume, 8vo, [iv], 55, [ii], [vi], 52, xvi, 52, [v], 124, [iv], 60, [xii], 206, [2] pp., contemporary calf, rebacked, armorial bookplate of John Bold of Grange, early ownership inscription on front free endpaper and early annotations on main title verso showing through, browned in places (heavily in the fourth work), generally good copies, all very rare.
