[Attributes: First Edition]

The university and the author received much praise for this work. That Wood's text was meticulously researched is evident from the footnotes giving his sources. Unfortunately, he received no office or reward from Oxford University for his work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         Ocios Morales.

Mazzarino, por Juan Vanberge, Flamengo, 1691. - Petit in-4.

Georges Gallet for Huguetan, Amsterdam 1691 - 12mo (152 x 95 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece and eleven engraved plates. 18th-century mottled sheep. Leather somewhat peeled and rubbed, losses at ends of spine; two plates with margins renewed, occasional foxing, pale damstaining and browning. Provenance: William Cholmondeley, 3d Marquess of Cholmondeley, British peer (gift inscription on front free endpaper verso to:) Sir John Thomas Ibbeston Selwin (1789-1869), Bart., then to his son; John Selwin (d. 1869; armorial bookplate). A fine abridgment by Claude Perrault of Vitruvius's treatise. "The Amsterdam edition attested to the success beyond French borders of this handy 'manual' (in-12) intended for practitioners. It would be used as a base for various translations, in particular the English version published in London in 1692 and the Italian version appearing in Venice in 1711" (Frédérique Lemerle et Yves Pauwels, Architetura). Perrault is renowned for his translation of the ten books of Vitruvius, published in 1673, and his treatise on the five classical orders of 1683. He was commissioned, along with Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun, by Louis XIV to design the east façade of the Louvre. Though the title is dated 1681, the frontispiece is dated 1691. The list of books for sale by Gallet on three leaves, is here bound after the title; it is sometimes found bound at the end of the work. The rare first volume contains a biography / detailed description the life of Muhammed (24 pages), a resumee of the principal thoughts of the Islam with several sources based on islamic teachers and it contains as well the "refutations" of each sutra, given first in Arabic, followed in Latin translation. Te. A ground-breaking work of Quranic scholarship, a valuable source for the study of the Quran and an essential source for European views of Islam.

Paris, Claude Barbin 1691 - 3 vol. in-12, [8] ff. n. ch. Palau 19 548.       Paris : chez J.B. Nolin, 1691. [Amsterdam, P. Mortier] - 1691 History of Louis XIV Illustrated Medals Emblem Numismatics Coins Menestrier A rare history of the reign of King Louis XIV of France by Claude-François Ménestrier, an important Jesuit author. This book, ‘History of King Louis the Great, Medals, Emblems’ was the first historical account of a modern individual. In this first-hand account, Menestrier used medals, heraldic devices, and emblems drawn from the collection of Francis de la Chaise. Menestrier was a professor of rhetoric and cared for the organizing of festivals and ceremonies during the passage of Louis XIV to Lyon in 1685. This 1691 is a pirated Dutch edition printed in Amsterdam, even though the title page states Paris. This edition includes five plates that were satirical and ‘anti-Louis’ in nature than did not appear in the Paris edition. (Saffroy). Other plates include views of Places de Victories, arms of Chevaliers of the Ordre du Saint-Esprit and more.          Naval Speculations, and Maritime Politicks: Being a Modest and Brief discourse of the Royal Navy of england:of Its Oeconomy and Government, and A Projection for an everlasting Seminary of Seamen, by a Royal Maritime Hospital. With A Project for a royal fishery. Also Necessary Measures in the present War with France, &c.

London: Printed by William Bonny, and sold by Sam. Manship, 1691. [32], 348pp, [2]. With an engraved portrait frontispiece and a terminal errata leaf. Without terminal blank. Contemporary gilt-tooled speckled calf, later rebacked, later contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, particularly to joints. Later plain endpapers, armorial bookplate of 'Thomas Foley' to FEP, with his ownership inscription to verso of frontispiece, very short closed tear to title - not touching text, worm-trail to upper margin throughout - occasionally touching running-title, slight loss to lower corner of P1, lower corner of Z1 repaired, lightly foxed. An extensive monograph critiquing the administration of the Royal Navy, with proposals for the improvement of the service, by Henry Maydman, purser and mayor of Portsmouth for 1710. The work provides a succinct portrait of the economic and organisational makeup of the navy, before presenting detailed arguments for revisions and the introduction of new procedure. Maydman, for example, contends that greater provision ought to be made for poor male children in order to better facilitate recruitment; that the establishment of navy controlled fisheries for the purposes of rations supply be implemented; that trade with France be continued despite ongoing conflict; and that, this being a rather elaborate suggestion, captured French sailors be employed fishing the coasts of Newfoundland. The treatise was presumably written, at least in part, in response to the French defeat of the Anglo-Dutch fleet at the Battle of Beachy Head the year prior to publication; certainly there existed a great unease regarding the future of British naval strength following the alliance with the Netherlands instigated by William III. Maydman's work, seemingly disregarded by the naval authorities, presumably due to his criticisms of the conduct of the Admiralty, nevertheless provides a revealing portrait of the conditions of the Royal Navy in the closing years of the seventeenth-century. Thomas Foley (c.1641-1701), politician, supporter of the Glorious Revolution, and latterly a member of the parliament of William III. ESTC locates copies at seven locations in the British Isles (BL, Cambridge, NLS, National Maritime Museum, Oxford, Senate House, and Thomas Plume's Library), and a further 10 in North America. Overall, an excellent copy; very clean and in a contemporary binding.Originally published in 1690 as ëTwo Treatises of Governmentí. ìLockeís anonymous text is here an anonymous translation, traditionally attributed to David Mazel. ëOne of the Huguenot pastors living in Hollandí, of the second treatise in its 1R version with the first chapter omittedì (Yolton). ìThe second treatise contains a plain statement of the principles of democracy. In an age and country in which the practice of democracy had just been triumphantly vindicated, Lockeís theories, although anticipated to some degree by the ëWhigí tradition of political thought-Aristotle, Aquinas, Hooker, Grotius-had all the freshness of novelty. Like Hooker, Locke presupposes an original and necessary law of reason, and bases the constitution of society on it, rather than on the de facto existence of a government based on the actual submission of the governed to the rulers. This consent is thus a prior condition of the ësocial contractí, not a result of it, so that the civil rulers hold their power not absolutely but conditionally; government being essentially a moral trust, which lapses if the trustees fail to maintain their side of the contract. Locke was to reinforce these liberal opinions by his Letters on Tolerance, and they combine with the Treatises on Government to provide a classic example of the empirical approach to the social and political economy which has remained ever since the basis of the principles of democracyî (PMM). Its influence on the development of French and American political though cannot be overstated.Graesse IV, 243. Printing and the Mind of Man, 163. Yolton, Locke 46.
