         Noticias Generales de Europa .

1685-1690. . - . Zaragoza-Barcelona. . 1 Vol. . . Cuarto Menor. . .

, 1690 - Cm. 16,5, pp. (16) 303 (1).

Roma, De Rossi 1690 - In folio (mm 477x325). Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\VEAE\005442; A. Bonazzi, Il Mercurio geografico: il gioco e la differenza, in: "Giacomo Cantelli: geografo del Serenissimo", Bologna, 1995, pp. 37-44 e 150-152; A. The map extends from India to the Philippines and the Ladrone Islands, and from southern Japan to Northern Australia (Nova Hollandia). There is a partial outline of Papua New Guinea and considerable cartographic data in the East Indies. It is one of the most accurate early charts of the coastline of north Australia, with many places named along the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Cape Keerweer (where fresh water could be found) on the north coast, reached by Willem Janszoon in the Duyfken in 1606 when sent by the Dutch East India Company to search for new trade opportunities. The decorative title cartouche is surrounded by various people of the region, animals, birds, and a bounty of trade goods. For nearly a century, the Visscher family of cartographers were important mapmakers and mapsellers in Amsterdam. The Schenk family started with many copper plates from the Visschers and became well-known print and map-sellers in their turn.Price: ?1.450,-.

         23. A Map of Oxfordshire With the Roads

Sold by Philip Lea at the Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside. London. [c. 1690] - Copper engraved with hand colour 366 x 482 mm A very scarce decorative map of the county of Oxfordshire, divided into Hundreds and with the roads marked. A boxed list provides the names of principle market towns and the Hundreds. Below is a large radiate compass with fleur-de-lis pointer. The title is boxed and topped with a simple four barred entablature, and a key in the bottom left corner is framed by a pair of cherubs carrying symbols of agricultural abundance. A pair of elaborate ribbons supported by more cherubs to the top left and right of the map show the arms of the colleges, as well as those of the University and King Alfred, the apocryphal founder of the University. This edition shows evidence of removal of another publication line left of the centre title, likely that of John Sellers (1632-1697) at the West Side of the Royal Exchange. During the 1680s, Sellers worked on a number of county maps for an Atlas Anglicanus, though after his publication of Lea's revised Saxton in 1689, Sellers abandoned the Atlas Anglicanus and sold the plates to Lea, who reworked and reissued them some years later. Philip Lea (fl.1683-1700) was a British map maker, globe maker, engraver, and publisher, as well as a manufacturer of scientific and cartographic instruments. The majority of his maps were reworkings of plates purchased from many of the leading map engravers of his day, including Saxton, Ogilby, Moll, Morden, and Overton. As well as his work as a map maker, Lea also collaborated with Robert Morden on a series of views of London, which customers were able to purchase printed on silk if so desired. Condition: Pressed central vertical fold, as issued. Minor time toning to margins, not affecting plate or map. Large professional manuscript repair to top right corner of sheet and map.

Memoires relating to the state of the Royal Navy of England, for ten years, determin'd December 1688.

London Printed anno MDCXC 1690 - First edition. 8vo (182 x 112 mm). [2], 214, [18] pp., large paper copy, inscribed "Ex dono Authoris" on the title page. With the portrait of Pepys by White after Kneller and folding accounts table, title printed in red and black, internally clean, contemporary mottled calf, A great example - A presentation copy from Pepys; royal Provenance (from the library of the future King William IV); and a large paper copy on thick paper. This issue was intended for private distribution, and instead of the imprint "printed for Ben. Griffin, and are to be sold by Sam. Keble", it reads instead "Printed anno MDCXC". This is a large paper copy, and the paper used is somewhat thicker and more substantial than that used for the ordinary copies. "Pepys had long intended to compile a naval history: the idea seems to have begun in 1664, when Coventry suggested he should write an account of the First Anglo-Dutch War. The scale of the proposed work gradually lengthened, and many books and notes were acquired with this distant prospect in view. Enforced leisure from 1679 to 1684 had allowed for further research, Evelyn providing much arcane knowledge from his own store. Pepys's renewed leisure, ample means, and reasonable health during the 1690s seemed likely to generate the great work, but it never came. The Memoires of 1690 were his only publication" (ODNB). Here the diarist looks back at the state of the Navy in 1679. Included is his proposition to the King for repairing the damage done to the Navy while Pepys was out of office for five years on account of accusations of supporting popery. Pepys supplies ideas for the improvement of administration, and a schedule of the fleet in December 1688. The Legard family has been long-established in North Yorkshire; Robert was a Naval Officer and so would have hada personal interest in the book. Wing P1449. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
