[iv], 182, [6]ads.pp. London, Crouch often published work under the pseudonym Richard or Robert Burton. As a publisher and compiler he had a prodigious output, and this little compendium was printed in at least four editions. It deals firstly with Guinea, then St. Helena, with a short description of Saldana Bay, west of the Cape of Good Hope, however his description of the East Indies becomes much more sketchy and loose. Ten pages of the text relate to the Table Valley in South Africa before the Dutch occupation of 1652. Theal, p322. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Schrifft, der Grossen und Kleinen Welt.

      - O.O. u. Dr. (Amsterdam, Wolters), 1686. Emblematisches Titelkupfer, 14 Bl., 820 S., 8 Bl. Pergament d. Zeit (angestaubt u. fleckig). Erste Ausgabe. 1686 1ed English Siege of BUDA Budapest Ottoman Muslim Turks Jews War Hungary

London : Printed for Robert Clavell, 1686. - 1686 1ed English Siege of BUDA Budapest Ottoman Muslim Turks Jews War Hungary A rare first-hand account of the Holy League’s siege of the Ottoman Empire capital city of Buda. This siege, organized by Pope Innocent XI during the Great Turkish War. The Battle of Buda in 1686, which followed the Battle of Vienna, was the downfall of the Buda (modern day Budapest). This siege was the start of a massacre of Jews and Muslims in the Middle East. Jews and Turks alike fought together during the Turkish War, but the Christian imperial troops killed thousands of Turks and Jews when the Reformed Hungarian Protestants wanted a complete eradication of Jews from Hungary. One Protestant account from the events says: “Not even the babies in their mother's wombs were spared. All were sent to their deaths. I was quite horrified by what was done here. Men were far more cruel to each other than wild beasts.” (Johann Dietz). This book provides military tactics used during the Great Turkish War, siege plans, approaches to enemy territory, descriptions of 17th-century Budapest, This first English edition was taken and translated from an anonymous French account.

With press-figure "[*]" on leaf L4v. 2nd work: [8], 22, [4], 6, 8pp., cancel title (A-D4 A-B4), 4 folding plates, followed by two leaves "Tabula Ascensium Obliqu-arum", no D4 (possibly an advertisement leaf), B± at end blank, some light damp-staining, contemporary panelled calf, joints and corners worn. First edition of the first work; second [?] edition, not listed in ESTC, of second work. William Molyneux (1656–1698), experimental philosopher and constitutional writer, born in Dublin has a claim to be considered the founder of modern science in Ireland. In October 1683 he set himself the task of forming a society in Dublin on the design of the Royal Society. As first secretary and treasurer he conducted correspondence and exchanged minutes with the Royal Society and its sister society at Oxford. He took an active part in the proceedings of the society, elucidating discoveries, demonstrating experiments and instruments, discussing books, showing curious objects, undertaking the calculation of solar and lunar eclipses, and recording weather data. In the summer of 1685 Molyneux visited his brother Sir Thomas Molyneux, then a graduate medical student at Leiden, and they undertook a three-month tour of the Netherlands and the Rhineland, ending up in Paris. They visited Christiaan Huygens at The Hague, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek at Delft, and Jean-Dominique Cassini at Paris. In September Molyneux spent two or three weeks in London and was invited to Greenwich by Flamsteed. He also took the opportunity to commission an instrument maker, Richard Whitehead, to make a combined dial and telescope. Although the instrument never performed well, Molyneux demonstrated it to the Dublin society, claiming it had improved the art of dialling by application of telescopic sights, and in 1686 he published the present book describing it. John Twysden (1607–1688), physician, had a keen interest in mathematics. Twysden's first work, in collaboration with Edmund Wingate, was published in London in 1654: it was an edition of Samuel Foster's Elliptical, or Azimuthal Horologiography. In 1659 he published the residue of Foster's papers, with some mathematical essays of his own, in a folio volume entitled Miscellanea, sive, Lucubrationes mathematicae. After many years work on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians, Twysden continued his mathematical studies, and first published the present work in 1685 (ESTC 15 copies). At the end of this work are two short works: John Palmer, The Planetary Instrument, or the description and use of the theories of the planets, 6pp., and Samuel Foster, The description and use of the noturnal, 8pp and table.          Plan Cadastral of the Land Outside the Fortifications.]

1686. 1686 - Large hand coloured manuscript map of the outlying districts of the town of Veurne in the Flemish region of Belgium. 63 x 98 cm on thick paper, folded three times; some slight wear on the folds and a few small holes, not really affecting the image. An attractive and historically important manuscript map. Sebastian Le Prestre Vauban constructed very distinctive fortifications to the town in the latter half of the 17th Century; these can be seen in the Ferraris Map of the Austrian Netherlands [1770 - 78]. There is no sign of these fortifications here, merely the earlier surrounding city wall. There is a listing of landowners with map references as well as an outline border marked on the map. The speculation is that this could be a survey to identify landowners prior to the requisition of land in order to construct the series of star shaped and zigzag fortifications and may be one of the few records in existence of this earlier shape and ownership of the surrounding district. These fortifications were taken down in the late 18th Century by forces under Joseph II of Austria and only outline traces remain.

Parentis Caspari Bartholini, Ad Circulationem Harvejanam, Et Vasa Lymphatica Quintum Renovata : Cum Iconibus novis, & Indicibus. An important early, very well illustrated edition of this standard anatomy by the Danish physician Thomas Bartholinus (1616-1680), who revised his father's work. With additional title engraved by G. Appelmans and an engraved portrait of the author pinx. by Ditmer and sculp. by G. Appelmans, and over 120 mostly full-page figures in the text and folding plates. The book is divided into 4 'libri' dealing with the lower torso, the thorax cavity, the head, and the limbs, joints and muscles, and 4 'libelli' on the veins, the arteries, the nerves, and the bones, cartilage and ligaments. It concludes with two letters from Johann Walaeus to the author on the subject of the circulation of blood and chyle within the body. The work is dedicated to King Christian V of Denmark.Four of the images from the "De ossibus" section in Bartholin's "Anatome" were adapted for use in the "Kaitai shinsho" (1774), the first Japanese anatomical treatise based directly on Western materials. The images are Tabula II, showing two views of the skull Tabula VI, showing the upper and lower portions of the skull's interior figures I - III of Tabula VII, illustrating types of vertebrae and the folding plate of the skeleton opposite p. 748.In Wales important letter to Bartholinus on the circulation of the blood, he gives a very early convincing proof of HARVAYs discovery according to the laws of hydrodynamic with a plate which shows a simple experiment on a dog to confirm Harvey?s doctrine.Thomas Bartholin of Copenhagen was at once the most prolific and the most widely read of the anatomists of the seventeenth century.Waller No. 713

RdH011".

1686 Machiavelli PRINCE Italian Renaissance Philosophy Politics Government

Amsterdam : Chez Henri Wetstein, 1686. - 1686 Machiavelli PRINCE Italian Renaissance Philosophy Politics Government “The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.” Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work “The Prince” has infamously coined the term ‘Machiavellianism’ regarding politics and dishonest politicians. It has often been considered the first work of modern philosophy, mostly because it conflicts so strongly with Catholic doctrines concerning politics and ethics at the time. In ‘The Prince,’ Machiavelli treads a line between accepting tyranny and supporting free republic. He advises leaders on ‘acceptable’ tyranny, justifying many immoral actions taken by kings and princes; however, this point likely was written to encourage medieval Catholicism to be less strict in their relationship with the law. Ultimately, Machiavelli was seeking to provide rulers with a guide on how to be accepted by their subjects – however necessary – be it commanding respect, demanding actions through law, using bribery, or even imparting fear. This printing is a fine third edition, published by Wetstein, includes a portrait engraved frontispiece of Machiavelli. Translated by Abraham Amelot de la Houssaye – an important translation that influenced political analysis during the Ancien Regime. York, N. Jarsey, Maryland, Pensilvania, Carrolina etc.

c 1686., London, - First map to name Philadelphia Double-page engraved map (475 by 565mm to the neatline, full margins showing the plate mark) with contemporary hand-colour in outline. Not only does this rare English map of America include the first appearance of Philadelphia on a printed map, it famously depicts California as an island. This is the second state of a frequently mis-cataloged map. According to Taliaferro, this map was offered for sale as early as 1684 and that most likely, there are two states of the map, the later (as here) of the two adding an advertisement for maps of Africa, Asia and Europe. This is the earliest appearance of Philadelphia on a printed map. Due to the changing English political landscape, the dedication to Henry, Duke of Beaufort, in a separate cartouche flanked by cherubs, makes it improbable that it was published after 1689. Henry was only a lukewarm supporter of the Glorious Revolution. The map is richly embellished with ships, coats of arms and a second cartouche featuring native inhabitants; and reflects heightened interest in the English colonies as well as English place-names for much of the New World.

First Italian edition, translated from the original Spanish (1683) by Ambrosio Ortiz. This is the official biography of Sanvitores, written in order to produce evidence for canonization. Sanvitores (1627 - 1672) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, recognized as founder of the first Catholic Church in Guam (the land being donated by local Chief Kepuha) and for establishing the Spanish presence in the Mariana islands (Ladrones); he arrived in Mexico in 1660 and in 1662 journeyed from Acapulco to the Philippines where he remained for 6 years, when permission was finally obtained for his mission to the Ladrones islands in the North Pacific, renamed Marianas at this time in honor of Maria Anna of Austria. A life of Luis de Medina, one of his companions martyred in the Marianas in 1670 was compiled from documents supplied by Sanvitores. His life ended abruptly, being martyred on Guam in 1672. A fundamental work, containing one of first detailed accounts of the Marianas in the Pacific; much also included respecting the Philippines and Guatemala. Illustrated with a fine engraved plate by Pesche, shows the martyrdom of Father Sanvitores, woodcut device on last folio. Sabin, 26591.

Napoli : Camillo Cauallo e Michele Luigi Mutij, 1686. Quarto, contemporary vellum (corners rubbed, a little stained), titled in manuscript on spine, pp. [xxii], engraved portrait, 663, woodcut device, a few stains, browning. Scarce. The first Italian edition of the official biography of San Vitores, notable Jesuit missionary to the Mariana Islands, and proponent for a Spanish expedition to colonise Terra Australis. Father San Vitores was one of the pioneer Spanish missionaries in the Mariana Islands, which lie directly to the north of the island of New Guinea in the northwest Pacific. He was martyred on the island of Guam in 1672. In his Memorial, of 1669 dedicated to the Viceroy of New Spain, patron of the Jesuit congregation in Mexico, San Vitores urges the Jesuits in Mexico to establish a mission in the Marianas - not as an end in itself, but because it would create a base from which the colonization and ultimate conversion of Terra Australis might be carried out. San Vitores' report was carried back to Mexico on the first galleon to visit him on Guam after his arrival there.

First French edition. Besides its rarity, this edition is also important for its illustrations don´t derive from either the Dutch original or two earliest English editions. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, from Exquemelin´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemelin (1645 - 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemelin describes the lootings, plundering, life and adventures of these seamen is, and was unequaled for a long time. The illustrations include seven folding maps and views; the Maracaibo and Panama maps closely follow the Dutch, a large folding map of the Spanish Main is entirely new to this edition. The text from this edition was substantially augmented by the editor, Journel; he is also responsible for shading light onto the term "buccaneer". Provenance: the Hamsworth copy (lot 6479, Sotheby´s, December 1949, 2/10/- GBP).
