Saducismus Triumphatus Full and plain evidence concerning Witches

Collins, London 1681 - Original first edition of the most influential book on witchcraft of the late 17th Century. The first edition sold here was expanded and republished the following year, and for many years thereafter. 3/4 leather binding in very good condition, possibly later (ca early 19th c?). Hinges and binding tight, pages supple and straight. Damage to first titel page and possibly missing a plate following that. This book is two volumes in one: Titlepages for each volume intact with publishers date of 1681. Book measures app 7" x 4". This first edition appeared posthumously. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More. The book affirms the existence of witches, and the author tries very hard to perpetuate the belief of witchcraft during a time when such a belief was waning. The author attacks skepticism concerning witches abilities and likens these skeptics to the Sadducees. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports. Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Title-page printed in red and black, engraved portrait on verso of final prelim leaf. Contemporary vellum boards, spine lettered in ink. Lightly toned, a little minor soiling. Vellum darkened, an area of the surface gently abraded, a few tidy repairs to spine. Booklabel of Leonard Dobbin to front pastedown. The second edition of the collected works, though the first under the title 'Opera Omnia' (reprinting 'Tractatus quinque', Oxford 1674), of the physiologist and chemist John Mayow (c.1641-1679), who 'must be classed with Hooke and Boyle, possessing the scientific imagination of the one, the tenacity of the other' (ODNB). Mayow's time at Oxford led him to contact with Robert Plot, John Castle, Christopher Wren, Thomas Millington, and others, but it was his work with Hooke during trips to London that led to his defining subject, respiration. 'Mayow described perfectly its mechanism, with the movement of ribs and diaphragm. He understood that the lungs were moved by the action of the diaphragm, and suggested that the internal and external intercostal muscles brought about the inspiration of air, which then expanded naturally into the enlarged space produced in the chest cavity. The function of breathing was not to cause the lungs to expand or to cool the blood, as William Harvey had thought, but to bring air in contact with the blood' (ODNB). Among his other achievements in these tracts is the probable first description of a case of mitral stenosis. Garrison & Morton 578 (for the first edition). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Varia Statum Politicum, Judicialem, et Oeconomicum Carnoliae Concernentia. Conscripta per Anonymum circa annum 1590. Descripta manu scribae, et famuli Joannis Ludovici Schönleben St. Theol. Doct. Proton. Ap.lici Archidiaconi Inf. Carn. Anno MDCLXXIX.

[Probably Laibach, likely 1620s, with additions to 1681]. - Small folio (205 x 300 mm). German and Latin manuscript on paper. (2), 188 (but: 186, omitting 88); (15); (4), 25; (32); (9 blanks); 4 ff. (ca. 530 written pages). With a contemporary sanguine portrait of Emperor Leopold I on the front pastedown and a receipe for aloe pills, dated 1679, written on the lower. 17th century vellum. A collection of mainly German (and a few Latin) legal texts, assembled thus in the 1670s by the Carniolan protonotary apostolic and sometime Jesuit J. L. Schönleben. His title page (as quoted above) is followed by a single, frayed leaf of contents covering folios 1-62, so that at least two further leaves of contents may be assumed to be lacking at the beginning. This is followed by the first and earliest part of the collection, foliated to leaf 188 and written in an earlier 17th century hand, containing the common law of the Duchy of Carniola. Because this section incorporates large parts of the so-called Private-Law Treatises of Bernhard Walther (the "father of Austrian law" who in the mid-16th century collected the Lower Austrian customary law), the present manuscript served as an important source for Max Rintelen's 1937 edition of the Treatises (cf. references below). As a form of oath on f. 5r refers to Emperor Ferdinand II, this section can be dated to no earlier than 1620; occasional textual amendments in Schönleben's later hand suggest that it was closely studied by the scholar. - The remainder of the collection is written in a different single, later scribal hand, likely by an assistant of Schönleben's, containing copies of rare legal codes and mandates: "N. ainer Ersamen Landschafft in Crain verpesserte Landschrannen Ordnung" (copied from the book printed in Graz in 1565); "Neu-auffgerichte Bergkwerchs-Ordnung über all Eisen-, Pergk- und Hammerwerch deß Fürstenthumbs Crain" (copied from the book printed in Laibach in 1587, with a facsimile of the title page traced in ink on now browned translucent paper), various addenda ("Lebensberueff Formular", "Generale ratione ecclesiasticorum bonorum de dato 1. Januar 1587", "Cassatio privilegiorum a privatis concessorum"); a long collection of the decrees of the apostolic visitation of Laibach in 1621 (extracts of which were published in 1862 based on this MS; cf. below); the milling ordinances issues by Emperor Maximilian II in 1572; instructions issued to the verderer of Crain by Emperor Ferdinand III in 1650, and numerous similar mandates mostly issued in the 17th century (but also including a Papal bull from 1122). The end is brought up by the copy of a communication of a Laibach Capuchin monk concerning the traditional Good Friday penance procession (dated 1 June 1681), a tax list for 1633-75, and a curious, extensive and apparently unpublished polemical version of the Lord's Prayer levelled against the King of Sweden ("Des Khinigs in Schwöden Vatter Unser"), juxtaposed line for line with the received text of the prayer: "Ach Khinig du khanst noch nicht recht betten / Ich glaub nit daß auf Erden Einmall / Ein solcher Khirchenrauber gewesen sey alß / Du stilst, raubst, bringst mir schaden [.]". - Provenance: 1) autograph ownership of the Carniolan jurist and historian Johann Gregor Thalnitscher von Thalberg (Dolnitscher, in Slovene: Janez Gregor Dolnicar, 1655-1719), dated 1679, on the pastedown, and his printed bookplate, dated 1680, on the title page. Thalnitscher, who obviously received the book during Schönleben's lifetime, has been called "the spirit of cultural rebirth in the Baroque in Ljubljana". He was keenly interested in the arts, and it is likely that the gifted portrait of Emperor Leopold I (here called "Semper Augustus Princeps Carniolae") under his handwritten ownership is his own work. 2) Private collection of Baron Anton Codelli (fl. 1850s), director of the Historical Society for Carniola. 3) Acquired by the Historical Society for Carniola from Codelli in 1856. 4) Traded to the Austrian legal historian and numismatist Arnold Luschin

Musaeum Regalis Societatis, or a Catalogue and Description

1681 - GREW, Nehemiah. Musaeum Regalis Societatis, or a Catalogue and Description of the Natural and Artificial Rarities Belonging to the Royal Society Whereunto is Subjoyned the Comparative Anatomy of Stomachs and Guts. London: Rawlins, 1681. Folio, contemporary paneled speckled calf rebacked, black morocco spine label, raised bands. $2500.First edition, illustrated with frontispiece portrait of Sir Daniel Colwall, founder of the Royal Society Museum, and 31 striking plates (one folding) bound at rear. The clergyman, botanist and anatomist Nehemiah Grew compiled this "great illustrated catalogue" during his tenure as Secretary of the Royal Society (Garrison & Morton 297). Included here are descriptions and plates of plant, animal, mineral and fossil "rarities" collected on various travels and explorations and acquired by the Royal Society. Part I, for example, discusses "Human Rarities," and begins with a description of an Egyptian mummy. "Grew’s Comparative Anatomy of Stomachs and Guts forms the appendix to his catalogue of the objects in the museum of the Royal Society; its publication marks the earliest usage of the term ‘comparative anatomy on the title page of a zoological work. The appendix represents the first comparative study of a single system of organs: Grew investigated the alimentary canals of birds, fish and various mammals, classifying the last group according to the anatomical and physiological criteria drawn from his investigations" (Norman 945). "The first attempt to deal with one system of organs only by the comparative method" (GM 297). The last nine plates illustrate the Comparative Anatomy. The present work was published at a particularly productive and important time for Grew; his magnum opus, The Anatomy of Plants followed a year later in 1682. Cole, History of Comparative Anatomy, 245-251. Owner signature, small marginal inkstamp, a few early ink corrections and marginal notations.Minor paper repair to frontispiece. Text and plates generally quite clean. A bit of light age-wear to contemporary boards; corners restored. An extremely good and handsome copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Prijs: ?1.250,-.

Strange and wonderful news from Norwich; the like not in all England besides. In a letter from Norwich, to a friend in London.

London: s.n 1681 - single sheet folio, (2)pp., caption title, in fine modern maroon quarter morocco over cloth boards, spine gilt lettered, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. A very good copy indeed. First and only edition. Comprises three letters, the first to an un-named recipient, the second to Lord Paston and Augustine Briggs, the third to Lords Clifford and Fairfax, including two addresses by the citizenry of Norwich and of Yorkshire urging their M.P.s to vote for more stringent legislation against Catholics and the possibility of a Catholic succession. These are preceded by a satirical letter signed 'T.W.'. This letter begins, 'I doubt not but you have heard of the Red hot Zeal of our Town. We are altogether for advancing the Protestant Religion .'. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Blackmer 750. Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
