Musaeum Regalis Societatis, or a Catalogue and Description

1681 - GREW, Nehemiah. Musaeum Regalis Societatis, or a Catalogue and Description of the Natural and Artificial Rarities Belonging to the Royal Society Whereunto is Subjoyned the Comparative Anatomy of Stomachs and Guts. London: Rawlins, 1681. Folio, contemporary paneled speckled calf rebacked, black morocco spine label, raised bands. $2500.First edition, illustrated with frontispiece portrait of Sir Daniel Colwall, founder of the Royal Society Museum, and 31 striking plates (one folding) bound at rear. The clergyman, botanist and anatomist Nehemiah Grew compiled this "great illustrated catalogue" during his tenure as Secretary of the Royal Society (Garrison & Morton 297). Included here are descriptions and plates of plant, animal, mineral and fossil "rarities" collected on various travels and explorations and acquired by the Royal Society. Part I, for example, discusses "Human Rarities," and begins with a description of an Egyptian mummy. "Grew’s Comparative Anatomy of Stomachs and Guts forms the appendix to his catalogue of the objects in the museum of the Royal Society; its publication marks the earliest usage of the term ‘comparative anatomy on the title page of a zoological work. The appendix represents the first comparative study of a single system of organs: Grew investigated the alimentary canals of birds, fish and various mammals, classifying the last group according to the anatomical and physiological criteria drawn from his investigations" (Norman 945). "The first attempt to deal with one system of organs only by the comparative method" (GM 297). The last nine plates illustrate the Comparative Anatomy. The present work was published at a particularly productive and important time for Grew; his magnum opus, The Anatomy of Plants followed a year later in 1682. Cole, History of Comparative Anatomy, 245-251. Owner signature, small marginal inkstamp, a few early ink corrections and marginal notations.Minor paper repair to frontispiece. Text and plates generally quite clean. A bit of light age-wear to contemporary boards; corners restored. An extremely good and handsome copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

         Rusland - Nicolaes Visscher, 1681.

"Moscoviae seu Russiae Magnae Generalis Tabula qu? Lapponia, Norvegia Suecia, Dania, Polonia, Maximaeque partes Germaniae, Tartariae, Turcici Imperii, aliaeque Regiones adjacentes simul ostenduntur; de novo correcta et edita".

Blackmer 750. Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

         Miscellaneous Poems.

London: for Robert Boulter, 1681 - Folio (292 x 191 mm). Contemporary sprinkled sheep, gilt supralibros of the Society of Writers to the Signet on both covers, smooth spine, lettering-piece. Housed in a red flat back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery Bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Spine rubbed and chipped at ends, last few leaves mottled, a very good copy. Engraved frontispiece portrait, title within double-ruled border, printer's woodcut device on title-page (McKerrow 195); the 16 leaves containing the three poems on Cromwell (R2–T1, U2–4, and X2) cancelled as usual. First edition, including first printings of, among others, "To his Coy Mistress" and "The Garden". The publisher Boulter was one of the original publishers of Paradise Lost, who that summer was to be arrested for predicting the imminent fall of the monarchy. Published a couple of years after Marvell's death, the volume made his poetic talents known to a general readership who would have known him, if at all, only from his commendatory verses to the second edition (1674) of Milton's epic, and perhaps from some satires, thus rescuing from obscurity one of the major English lyricists of the seventeenth century. "Failure of nerve during a temporary crisis in Whig fortunes had led to excision of the three Cromwell pieces before sale from almost all known copies of the work" (ODNB); only two copies, both imperfect, are known with them. Grolier/Wither to Prior 536; Hayward 126; Pforzheimer 671; Wing M872. [Attributes: First Edition]

1681 FOLIO Works of Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Davideis

London : Printed by J.M. for Henry Herringman ., 1681. - 1681 FOLIO Works of Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Davideis “What shall I do to be for ever known, And make the Age to come own?” I shall like beasts or common people die, Unless you write my elegy.” – Abraham Cowley, The Motto Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming, and rare, sixth edition was the last edition of the original one volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as ‘The Mistress,’ ‘The Motto,’ ‘Ode to Pindar,’ and ‘Davideis’ are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar’s works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar’s poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth’s famous ode “Intimations of Immortality.” Item number: #1087 Price: $599 COWLEY, Abraham The works of Mr. Abraham Cowley : consisting of those which were formerly printed and those which be design'd for the press, now published out of the authors original copies. Inscriptions opposite title pages in vol. 1 & 2 reads: ‚Dr. Gilbert Burnet gave me this book June the 4 (the year of the lord) 1683'. Gilbert Burnet (18 September 1643 - 17 March 1715) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was highly respected as a cleric, a preacher, an academic, a writer and a historian. He was always closely associated with the Whig party, and was one of the few close friends in whom King William III confided. In the mid-1670s, a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres (1585) appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work, so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume (1681) covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume (1715) consisted of corrections and additional material. His literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication. The Parliament of England voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume, and in 1680 the University of Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of Doctor of Divinity on the advice of William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury. For over a century this was the standard reference work in the field, although Catholics disputed some of its content. (Wikipedia)
