1671 - Blount, Thomas; London, 1671. With the Addition of "Above One-Hundred" Words by Thomas Blount [Rastell, John (d.1536)]. Rastell, William (1508?-1565). [Blount, Thomas (1618-1679), Editor]. Les Termes de la Ley, Or, Certain Difficult and Obscure Words and Terms of the Common Laws and Statutes of this Realm Now in Use Expounded and Explained. Newly Corrected and Enlarged. With an Addition of Above One Hundred Words. London: Printed by John Streater, James Flesher, and Henry Twyford, Assigns of Richard Atkins and Edward Atkins, 1671. [xvi], 613, [1] pp. Lacking final leaf, a blank. Woodcut frontispiece (royal arms of England). Main text in parallel columns. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter morocco over marbled boards, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to boards and extremities, crack in text block between front free endpaper and following leaf. Moderate toning to text, headlines of some leaves affected by trimming, a few minor tears and chips to fore-edges with no loss to text, early owner signatures and annotations to endleaves, early owner initials and small later owner stamp to head of title page. $500. * Later edition. With additions by the notable legal lexicographer Thomas Blount, author of the Nomo-Lexikon (1670). English and Law French in parallel columns. First published in 1527 by John Rastell, this was both the first English dictionary and first English law dictionary. It was originally written in Law French with the Latin title Expositiones Terminorum Legum Anglorumae. Later editions were produced by his son, William, who is believed to be the editor or translator. (Some sources claim, erroneously, that William is the author.) Quite popular with students and lawyers due to its clarity and concision, it went through at least twenty-five editions by 1721. A final reissue appeared in 1819. As Marvin observes, it is a useful dictionary because it "reflects the common law at the close of the year-book period with much fidelity.": Legal Bibliography 599. English Short-Title Catalogue R203324. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lyon: Chez Pierre Compagnon, & Robert Taillandier, 1671. Lyon:: Chez Pierre Compagnon, & Robert Taillandier, 1671., 1671.4to. [xiv], 358 pp. Woodcut title vignette, 16 folding engraved plates, 1 map (of Palestine & Jerusalem); light foxing. [Plates are located facing pp. 1, 72, 114, 129, 136, 144, 152, 160, 162, 166, 176, 184, 188, 190, 192, 266, 315]. [COMPLETE]. Modern antique-style calf, raised bands, elaborate gilt-stamped spine compartments, covers tooled in blind. Fine. Second illustrated edition, illustrated with 16 Plates & a Map of the Levant. Jacques-Florent Goujon was a fur trader, before receiving a vocation and taking the habit of Cordelier in November 1636. He traveled to the Holy Land in 1666 and stayed for two years in Jerusalem. This interesting and well-illustrated volume relates the events of his journey, and endeavors to describe various significant locations in detail, with special attention being given to chapels, churches, Christ, Aleppo, the Dead Sea, archeological monuments and burial sites. Chapters [or "Visites"] include such subjects as "Mount Tabor", "Mummies and Pyramids", "The Holy Sepulcher", "Mount Zion", "The Mountains, and the Deserts", "Syria", and "of Egypt in General". While Goujon's interests are primarily religious, a large portion of the text is devoted to secular matters such as local customs, geography, and architecture. / "The issue [of colorful exaggeration in pilgrimage writing] remained alive in the work of Jacques Florent Goujon, a Franciscan who had spent two years (beginning in 1668) making observations, taking notes, and mulling over his experiences in the Holy Land. His Histoire et Voyage de la Terre Sainte (Lyon, 1670), a thoroughly Custodial work, explicitly urged the contrast to be drawn between a pilgrimage (such as his own) that was composed by a traveler who lived in Palestine over an extended period of time and a pilgrimage by a traveler who, however devout, was merely passing through. …Tension and competition between pious visitors and pious residents of the Holy Land became a hovering smoke in the literature of pilgrimage. …" "In Goujon, the perennial problem, of writing something new in a tradition of centuries reporting on the same places, is related to this matter of the comparison between the resident's thick interpretation of the Holy Land and the visitor's thin impressions of the same scene. Something to notice about Goujon is his use of a new style of language. He speaks of his seeming to "uncover (desrobant) the history and outline of the holy places" and remarks that "each step that Christ took conceals mysteries (cache des mystères) which it is not easy to explain thoroughly." It is for this reason that one must make repeated visits to individual places. One cannot speak too often of the sacred places. There is always more to say. "These are the same places sanctified by these august mysteries that I have described. One cannot reflect enough on them. However devout he is, the Christian cannot often enough meditate upon them." "This is something of a conceptual breakthrough. Within the world of the pilgrimage, Goujon has found a new way to attack the old problem. There is always need for new books of pilgrimage, and not simply because earlier authors were imperfect or forgetful reporters or because things change over time or because everyone sees things from a different angle."

"Inscription in lower left corner of image: Io Baptista Falda / dell. e Sculpit. / 1671; Etcher born in Valduggia, a small village in Valsesia in the province of Novara, who was active in Rome where he collaborated with the printer Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi. The print shows Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome, decorated with sculptures of angels holding the Instruments of the Passion, that were designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini and other sculptors. A papal procession is seen crossing the bridge, with a view of Castel Sant'Angelo in the background. Splendid impression of this fine view of the festival held on the occasion of Pope CLEMENT X taking possession of the newly completed bridge at Sant'Angelo and the restored Castello Sant'Angelo. Most of the celebrated statues which Bernini and his studio executed for this bridge were completed in 1669 when Pope Clement IX, who had given Bernini the commission, died. The ""Angel with the Cross,"" the statue in the right row on the bridge and considered the masterpiece of ERCOLE FERRATA, was not completed until 1670 and in the following year the bridge was formally inaugurated. In the foreground is the sedia gestatoria holding Pope Clement X followed by his College of Cardinals. The engraving was entrusted by Bernini to Giovanni Battista Falda, the most accomplished architectural engraver in Rome. Bernini had given his designs to Faldo for the engraving. Their close relationship is evident in Falda's inclusion of Bernini's plan for the Colonnade of St. Peter with the so-called terzo braccio, which was never completed. Perfect condition."          De Fabrica triremium liber.

Amsterdam: [Christoffel Cunradus,], 1671. Quarto (201 × 142 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked to the spine, marbled edges. Superb folding etched frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe showing 5 separate sections of oared vessels, printer's device to title page, diagrams to the text, extensive use of Hebrew and Greek types. Eighteenth-century ownership inscription of the classical scholar Johann Christoph Wernsdorf to the first blank. Covers just a little rubbed and mildly sprung, first blank loose, light toning, a highly attractive copy. First and only edition of this uncommon treatise on ancient shipbuilding, drawn from classical and Biblical sources, illustrated with a beautiful, etched frontispiece by de Hooghe. Born in Tönningen, Schleswig-Holstein, around 1630, Meibom was a Danish philologist and polymath scholar probably best known for his work on music in antiquity. His Antiquae musicae auctores septem of 1652 printed seven Greek works together with his Latin translations of them, and it is known that he attempted concerts of reconstructed Greek music. Meibom was summoned to the court of Queen Christina; became a professor at the Soroë Academy at the time when Christian IV was attempting to turn it from a "knight academy" into a full university; was later chief of the customs office as Helsingöer; and was made professor of history at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam in 1668. In the present work he essays an accurate reconstruction of the construction and organization of the ancient trireme from a collation and analysis of contemporary sources. Dedicating the book to the kings, princes and Christian republics of the shores of the Mediterranean, he explains that triremes were the principal warships of the ancient world and assures his readers that he has "tried, by means of this book to re-launch them into the sea, not from ship-sheds where they, having been pulled on the shore, have stood until the present time, but brought forth from the much-venerated ancient monuments of letters." An important early-modern work of marine archaeology.

Artist: Wit de Frederick (d) ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: (d)1671 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Some restoration at lower centerfold; - size (in cm): 47,5 x 56; - description: Map shows South Germany with Schwaben and Bayern, Suisse, South Tirol, Luxemburg and partly Austria; - vita of the artist: Frederik de Wit (1610 ? 1698) His Atlas began to appear around 1662 and by 1671 included anywhere from 17 to 151 maps each. In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. Frederik de Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired, to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid-1670s an atlas of as many as 151 maps and charts could be purchased from his shop. In ca.1675 Frederik de Wit released a new nautical atlas. The charts in this atlas replaced the earlier charts from 1664 that are known today in only four bound examples and a few loose copies. Frederik de Wit new charts were sold in a chart book and as part of his atlases. Frederik de Wit published no fewer than 158 land maps and 43 charts on separate folio sheets. In 1695 Frederik de Wit began to publish a town atlas of the Netherlands after he acquired a large number of city plans at the auction of the famous Blaeu publishing firm?s printing plates.Dating Frederik de Wit atlases is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years.

As Marvin observes, it is a useful dictionary because it "reflects the common law at the close of the year-book period with much fidelity.": Legal Bibliography 599.       1671 - 28.5 x 54 cm.

Prijs: ?3.950,-.

He became friends with such English Humanists as Sir Thomas More, William Grocyn, and John Colet, and remained in England, with periodic visits to Italy, until 1550, when he returned to Urbino. Among Vergil¿s important works were Proverbiorum libellus (1498), known as the Adagia, a collection of proverbs and aphorisms with comments and moralistic reflections; De rerum inventoribus (1499), a popular, often reprinted treatise on inventions ¿ ¿ Encyclopedia Britannica online.
