Prijs: ?3.950,-.

The Marquis was a bibliophile of the first order . '. Royal Berkshire History by David Nash Ford, online. The duke's estates were seized and sold off to pay his mounting debts. Harriet Arbuthnot, the diarist, commented after a visit to Blenheim in 1824: 'The present duke is overloaded with debt, is very little better than a common swindler and lets everything about Blenheim. People may shoot and fish at so much per hour and it has required all the authority of a Court of Chancery to prevent his cutting down all trees in the park. ¿Polydore Vergil, original name Polidoro Vergilio (born c. 1470, Urbino, Urbino and Pesaro¿died April 18, 1555, Urbino), Italian-born Humanist who wrote an English history that became required reading in schools and influenced the 16th-century English chroniclers Edward Hall and Raphael Holinshed and, through them, Shakespeare. In 1508 he was made archdeacon of Wells. He became friends with such English Humanists as Sir Thomas More, William Grocyn, and John Colet, and remained in England, with periodic visits to Italy, until 1550, when he returned to Urbino. Among Vergil¿s important works were Proverbiorum libellus (1498), known as the Adagia, a collection of proverbs and aphorisms with comments and moralistic reflections; De rerum inventoribus (1499), a popular, often reprinted treatise on inventions ¿ ¿ Encyclopedia Britannica online.          Books and Divers Epistles of the Faithful Servant of the Lord Josi

1671 - COALE, JOSIAH. The Books and Divers Epistles of the Faithful Servant of the Lord Josiah Coale. [London]: Printed in the year, 1671. 4to. 28, 33-104, 152, 269-343 [i.e., 344] p. Complete as issued. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked and recornered, later (but old) endpapers. Modern bookplate. First edition. Pages 14 through 19 contain a testimony by William Penn, most likely written while Penn was in prison. The testimony expresses great love and admiration for Coale. Josiah Coale was one of Penn's intimate friends during Penn's first years as a Quaker. Coale had been one of the early missionaries to the New World and was likely the first Quaker to touch Pennsylvania soil in 1658 (Bronner & Fraser p. 131). The text, erratically paginated but complete and conforming to the other known copies, contains several different essays and testimonies, including "An Epistle to Friends in New-England," "To the Flock of God, Gather'd out of the World in the Province of Maryland," "To all People in Jamaica," &c. "The VVhore Unveiled" has a separate title page dated 1667. European Americana 671/82; Wing C4751; Bronner & Fraser (Penn) 13; Baer (Maryland) 68; JCB(3) III:215. [Attributes: First Edition]

Hocsieu with its suburbs / Hocsieu met de voor Stadt.

[London, 1671]. - Copper engraving. 285:720 mm. Matted. Top left notes to the letters (A-D) in English and Dutch. After the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie was driven out of Taiwan in 1662, it tried to gain access to the porcelain and silk trade at the port of Fuzhou, which was then also known as Hocksiew. However, the Company's attempts to trade there were hampered by a string of bureaucratic restrictions. As early as 1655 a Dutch delegation had visited the Imperial court in Peking (Beijing), but had had little opportunity to discuss trading conditions. A visit of this kind was regarded solely as a token of the respect to which the emperor was entitled. In 1666 a second delegation was sent to Peking Beijing. It was led by the ambassador Pieter van Hoorn. But aside from some dazzling descriptions of China, this journey also yielded nothing. Although the trading post at Fuzhou barely made a profit, the VOC kept it on until 1681.

Dedication dated: d. 4 April: 1671. EXTREMELY RARE SECOND EDITION OF THIS RICHLY ILLUSTRATED TREATISE ON DENDROLOGY BY THE ITALIAN NATURALIST ULISSE ALDROVANDI. The first was published posthumous in Bologna in 1668. Dendrology is the science and study of wooded plants (trees, shrubs, and lianas), specifically, their taxonomic classifications. Dendrology is often confused with botany. However, botany is the study of all types of general plants, while dendrology studies only woody plants. Dendrology may be considered a subcategory of botany that specializes in the characterization and identification of woody plants. Ulisse Aldrovandi (11 September 1522 – 4 May 1605) was an Italian naturalist, the moving force behind Bologna's botanical garden, one of the first in Europe. Carl Linnaeus and the comte de Buffon reckoned him the father of natural history studies. He is usually referred to, especially in older literature, as Aldrovandus; his name in Italian is equally given as Aldroandi. Provenance: Handwritten ownership inscrptions at title-page (deleted). References: IT\ICCU\TO0E\117569 (1 copy at the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria – Torino). OCLC, 15806288. Cond.: Light brownings and some water-stains. Front hinge a bit cut at bottom.
