Dispensatorium Hafniense, Jussu Superiorum à Medicis Hafniensibus adornatum.

Hafniae (Copenhagen), Georg Lamprecht, 1658. 4to. Completely uncut in the original blank interim boards with a marbled paper spine with handwritten title-label. A bit of scattered brownspotting and a small marginal damp stain to some leaves. All in all a very good copy in original state. Lovely engraved frontispiece (which is usually lacking), (8), 283, (18) pp. ¶ The very rare first - and only - edition of the first Danish pharmacopoeia, which was not only the first official formulary/collection of recipes in Denmark, but also the only one for more than a century. The present copy is in the first issue, with Lamprecht as printer, and not Paulli. "In the year of 1658 Denmark got her first official formulary when "Dispensatorium Hafniense was published. On the title-page this publication bears the title Dispensatorium Hafniense, in other words, The Dispensatory of Copenhagen, and as this indicates, its purpose was to be an aid to the pharmacists in the capital of Denmark. At this time Copenhagen had but three pharmacies of which the first was established in the year of 1546, but within the year of publication of the dispensatory, the fourth pharmacy was established in Copenhagen. Although this formulary according to its origin, was intended to be of assistance to the pharmacies of Copenhagen, it was, however, some years later in connection with the "Medical ordinance of the 4th of December, 1672" stetd to be obligatory for all pharmacies in "The kingdom and countries" and as such remained the valid pharmacopoeia until the first edition of "Pharmacopoea Danica" was published in 1772.!" (Kurt Bærentsen: Dispensatorium Hafniense in the Light of History (the afterword to the facsimile-edition of the work, 1966), p. 17).Although no less than ten physicians and professors of medicine in Copenhagen - amoung them Simon Pauilli and Rasmus Bartholin - were co-workers on the project, the principal person in the preparation of the "Dispensatorium Hafniense" was Thomas Bartholin. The work is also known as "Bartholin's Dispensatorium". Thomas Bartholin (1616-1680) was one of the leading physicians of his time, now remembered, among many other things, as the discoverer of the lymphatic system. He "was the most celebrated physician of his period in Denmark and perhaps in all of Europe". (Kronick, p. 81). He is considered "a typical representative of the "Curiosi naturae" of the 17th century with all their learning, diligence and insatiable spirit of curiosity... He belonged with all his heart to the learned period, and yet he made an anatomical-physiological discovery of high mark when he found, and demonstrated, a hitherto entirely unknown vascular system in animals, and later in man - the lymphatic." (Meisen, p. 25). He was a hugely influential and extremely productive man. Apart from his seminal discovery of the lymphatic system, he wrote a number of highly influential treatises, published a series of very influential anatomical papers, published his vast correspondence with other scientists, which has the character of a scientific archive at a time when there were not yet periodicals of natural science, provided us with the most extensive information about medicine in Denmark and about the conditions of the physicians, called attention to the significance of pathological anatomy, created one of the earliest scientific journals in the world and compiled the first pharcopoeae in the country. In short, Thomas Bartholin is the main exponent of an era in Danish science that became one of the most memorable.

Histoire de la grande isle Madagascar.

Pierre L'Amy 1658 - In-4 (222 x 169 mm) de 12 ff. n. ch., 192 pp., 9 ff. n. ch., pp. 193 - 384, 42 pp. 15 planches hors texte dont 6 cartes et plans, 4 planches à double page et 2 tableaux ; vélin ivoire souple (reliure de l'époque). Chadenat n° 306 ; Pritzel n° 2929 ; Grandidier n° 177. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Morgenlandische reyse-Beschreibung.

First edition. Double-page map, engraved half-title, portrait and 21 fine text engravings. Small folio Contemporary rather soiled, vellum, initialled and dated in large gilt lettering ?C.C. 1658? on the upper cover. The title repaired without loss [xxxvi], 248,[36]pp. Schleswig, Johan Holwein Mandelso went with Adam Olearius to Persia in 1633 to negotiate a trade agreement with the Shah. Instead of staying in Persia or returning with his fellow ambassadors he continued his journey to the court of the Mogul Emperor via Surat and thence south to Ceylon returning to Europe via, Madagascar and the Cape of Good Hope. His observations are varied and enjoyable enhanced by illustrations mainly from his own hand, including a view of the fortified island of Hormuz, one of Madagascar and a particularly attractive engraved title. At the end of the volume there is a lengthy description of the East Indian Islands, with description too of the political situation in Formosa and Japan, one imagines this is written by Olearius who supplies a short panegyric poem celebrating Mandelso's all too short life (1616-1644). The first complete edition of Mandelslo's travels. A less full account had previously been appended to Olearius's account of the mission. Cordier, 878. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Whole Duty of Man, Laid down in a plain and Familiar Way for the Use of All, but especially the Meanest Reader.

      R. Norton 1658 - Hardcover in presumed original leather covered boards which have been professionally rebacked and repaired with gilt decoration on boards and spine with five raised bands and gilt titles, some repaired pages (see photos), page 401 has some loss, some previous owners names in ink on verso of title page and page 401, other small annotations throughout, all edges gilt, marbled end papers, Very Good condition commensurate with age. First edition, pp 503, engraved frontis, preface by Dr. H. Hammond. A Very Scarce first edition of this important theological work. From Wikipedia: The consensus view of modern scholars is that the likely author was Richard Allestree, but at the time of publication (towards the end of the Interregnum) the High Church tradition it represents was a politically dangerous position. The authorship was well concealed, and it has been noted that the work has been attributed to at least 27 people, beginning with Hammond himself., The Whole Duty of Man is mentioned in novels as a work typically to be found in small personal libraries. Examples are "a Family Bible, a "Josephus," and a "Whole Duty of Man", in The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy; "a shelf on which Mrs Julaper had her Bible, her Whole Duty of Man, and her Pilgrim's Progress", in The Haunted Baronet by Sheridan Le Fanu; and "the bookcases, where Fox's "Lives of the Martyrs" nestled happily beside "The Whole Duty of Man" in The Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. Du Bois. Richard Brinsley Sheridan guyed it in The Rivals. Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote of William Sherlock's Treatise on Death that it "during many years, stood next to the Whole Duty of Man in the bookcases of serious Arminians". David Hume, a critic, wrote in his An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, that "I suppose, if Cicero were now alive, it would be found difficult to fetter his moral sentiments by narrow systems; or persuade him, that no qualities were to be admitted as virtues, or acknowledged to be a part of PERSONAL MERIT, but what were recommended by The Whole Duty of Man". Benjamin Franklin wrote, in a letter to his wife, regarding his daughter Sally, "I hope she continues to love going to church, and would have her read over and over again the Whole Duty of Man, and the Lady¿s Library." It was enormously popular on the continent of Europe translated into Italian in 1560 and into French and German in 1567 and 1575. Although it continued to be reissued in Latin well into the 17th century it was not translated into English until 1658. Levinus Lemnius or Lemmens (1505-1568) was born at Zirickzee in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. At first he studied theology, then medicine under the famous anatomist Vesalius. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and then practised medicine successfully in his native town. He was a friend of Dodoens and Conrad Gesner. This work was his most famous and important, a Book of Secrets with large sections on medical matters and natural history: procreation and birth, medicinal plants, influence of the moon on plant growth, epilepsy, sleepwalkers, sleeping with an open mouth, the benefits of wine drinking, alcoholism, healing power of gemstones.       Probably Tuscany, 1658. - Small 4to (117 x 155 mm). Italian manuscript in black ink on paper. Title, blank leaf, (24) pp. Rebound in modern half leather. Remarkable mid-17th-century Italian manuscript in the Tuscan dialect, entitled "Shield for the Dog Days" and containing a total of 29 numbered recipes for flavoured and perfumed waters to help the thirsty through the hottest days of summer. The recipes include "acque di Gelsumini" (Jasmine water), "acqua con fiori di melangoli" (water flavoured with blossoms of bitter oranges), "acqua di limoni" (lemonade), "acqua di foglie di cedro" (cedar leaf water), "acqua di fraule" (strawberry water), "acqua di Tubarosa" (tuberose water), but also cocoa drinks ("per far la cicolata") and coffee ("per far cafe"), etc. Also, a recipe "how to lend any water the colour of wine without changing its taste" ("per dare il colore di vino a qualsi vogl' acqua senza levarli il sapore"). The inventor of these recipes, who calls himself "Androfilo Sannatele", could not be identified; the name is likely a professional alias. - Some waterstaining and ink corrosion (loss of page numbers, otherwise well legible).          Les chansons de Gaultier Garguille. Nouvelle édition. Suivant la Copie imprimée à Paris en 1731

s.é., A Londres 1658 - [Chansons] Nouvelle édition.
