         Illustration from 'Insects of Surinam.'

Amsterdam: 18th century. Hand-colored copperplate engraving on paper. Plate 31 from Dissertatio de Generatione et Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium by A. Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717) and Johanna Helena Herolt (1668-1773). Merian is a remarkable figure among natural history artists. Already a successful and published illustrator of insects, she and her younger daughter, Dorothea, left Holland for Surinam in 1701, where she compiled hundreds of drawings of insects and flowers for her landmark Metamorphosis Insectorum Surnamensium. It remains one of the most decorative yet factual works of Natural History.

Insulæ Americanæ In Oceano Septentrionali. cum Terris adiacentibus.

[Amsterdam, 1647] - Copper engraved with hand colour 380 x 525 mm From Blaeu's 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. German text on verso. A decorative map of the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico, heavily based on Hessel Gerritsz' 1631 map of the same region. The map illustrates the Caribbean, Florida, the south-east coast of the United States, Central America, and the north coast of South America. The title is featured in the upper left corner within a cartouche supported by two putti, and surrounded by various animals native to the Americas, including a turtle and an iguana. The Blaeu family were one of the most famous publishers of maps, globes and atlases during the seventeenth-century. Cartographers, globe makers and booksellers, the Blaeu business flourished in Amsterdam for over 40 years, until a fire destroyed their premises in 1672. They lost all of their plates, prints and stock, which effectively ruined the firm. Willem Blaeu founded the business in 1596. It initially functioned as a globe and instrument makers, but soon expanded into maps, topography and sea charts. The Atlas Novus was Willems great work; a major work which intended to include the most up-to-date maps of the entire world. He issued the first two volumes in 1635, but died in 1638 before the atlas was completed. The running of the business was passed on to his sons Johannes and Cornelius, in addition to the role of the official cartographer of the East India Company. After the death of Cornelis in 1644, Johannes continued the business alone and established his own reputation as a great mapmaker. Johannes completed his father's grand project in 1655 with the sixth and final volume of the Atlas Novus. He also produced the Tooneel der Steden van der Vereenighde Nederlanden in 1649-1653, as well as a similar set of Italian town plans which were published in 1663. Condition: Vertical centre fold as issued. Good impression, although a few areas of light discolouration and foxing.

1647 Francis Bacon History of Henry VII England Tudor Dynasty ELZEVIR Philosophy

Lugduni Batavorium: Franc. Hackium, 1647. - 1647 Francis Bacon History of Henry VII England Tudor Dynasty ELZEVIR Philosophy “Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Bacon’s “History and Reign of Henry VII”. According to Willems, these Hackium publications were printed from the house of Elzevier. In this book, Bacon provides a detailed account of the life of Henry VII, however, not just from a historical perspective, but also providing a sense of the character of the king. From Bacon himself: “He was careful and liberal to obtain good intelligence from all parts abroad Towards his Queen he was nothing uxorious; nor scarce indulgent; but companiable and respective, and without jealousy. Towards his children he was full of paternal affection, careful of their education, aspiring to their high advancement” (Craik) However, because of his attitude and often lackadaisical temperament, he was thought of as an incompetent leader unable to overcome serious difficulties. Francis Bacon creates one of the best biographical sketches of the late-15th-century English monarch. Item number: #1897 Price: $550 BACON, Francis Franc. [img-2574-left-large_default] First edition of a manual of military architecture treating both permanent fortifications and field defence, in which occurs the first historical account of the genesis of bastions. Matthias Dögen studied mathematics at the university of Frankfurt an der Oder and sciences at Leiden, entered the service of the Admiralty at Amsterdam, and in 1641 became the agent there of Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg. He became convinced that geometry can provide perfect, invincible fortifications. This manual is his only published work and on it rests his reputation, since the oft-repeated claim that he built fortifications at Spandau is now disputed. The book subsequently was printed in German and French translations (both also at Amsterdam). 1 [img-2575-left-large_default] Engraved plan of the fortifications of Wolfenbüttel (platemark 205 × 290 mm) The book features a frontispiece engraved by Theodor Dirck Matham (1606-1676) and two series of plates, geometric figures with details of fortifications or apparatus used in building, and a sequence of topographical plans. The most attractive plans are those of cities bordering on water, such as Breda, Mannheim, Antwerp, Geneva, and Ostende. The plans of Stralsund, Küstrin, Wolfenbüttel, and Spandau are said to be based on manuscript materials. 2 Six of the topographical plates were used two years later, in 1649, for Blaeu's town book of The Netherlands.          Christian astrology modestly treated of in three books.

London, Partridge and Blunden, 1647 - 23 Bll., S. 25 - 833, 11 Bll. mit einigen Textholzschnitten. 1 Kupfer-Porträt. Erste Ausgabe des Hauptwerks des vielleicht bedeutendsten englischen Astrologen, sehr selten. - "William Lilly (11 May [O.S. 1 May] 1602 – 9 June 1681) has been described as the most abused as well as the most celebrated astrologer of the seventeenth century. . Lilly`s most comprehensive book was published in 1647 and was entitled Christian Astrology. It is so large that it came in three separate volumes in modern times, and it remains popular even today and has never gone totally out-of-print. It is considered one of the classic texts for the study of traditional astrology from the Middle Ages, in particular horary astrology, which is mainly concerned with predicting future events or investigating unknown elements of current affairs, based on an astrological chart cast for the time a particular question is asked of the astrologer. Worked examples of horary charts are found in Volume 2 of Christian Astrology. . The publication of a facsimile of the original 1647 edition of Lilly`s Christian Astrology in 1985 by Regulus Publishing Company Ltd., in the UK, brought about a renaissance in astrological scholarship in North America and Europe, and also a transformation of the techniques of modern astrology. Olivia Barclay and other British astrologers began to unearth Lilly`s astrological work, and were influential in the eventual re-publication of Christian Astrology" (Wikipedia Abruf vom 12.10.2017). - Die ersten 4 Blätter (inlusive dem Kupferporträt) sowie die letzten beiden Blätter gereinigt und mit restaurierten Beschädigungen sowie teils aufgezogen (ohne Text- bzw.          Ongeluckige Voyagie, Van't Schip Batavia, Nae de Oost-Indien. Gebleven op de Abrolhos van Frederick Houtman.

Jan Jansz, Amsterdam 1647 - Small quarto, with six full-page plates comprising 15 separately engraved images: seventeenth-century vellum, spine faintly lettered in ink; preserved in a handsome calf bookform box. A wonderful copy of an exceptional rarity: the very first views of Australia are the astonishing highlight of this, the first Australian book, the earliest record of any European landing on the Australian continent, and a famous tale of murder and mystery. This is one of only two copies of the first edition of 1647 that is known to be held outside institutions. Pelsaert's account of the "unlucky voyage" and wreck of the VOC ship Batavia off the western Australian coastline in 1629 and its gruesome aftermath is the first published account of any voyage of Australian discovery. The book is justly famous not only for the remarkable tale but for the suite of engraved illustrations that accompany the text, with graphic reproductions of the wreck, the mutiny and slaughter on the islands, the trial and torture of the leaders and their execution on the mainland; they are the earliest published images of Australia. The story of the wreck itself "provides the greatest dramatic tragedy in Australian history beside which the mutiny on the Bounty is an anaemic tale" (Drake-Brockman). The account was written by Pelsaert (1595-1630), a Belgian officer of the Dutch East India Company who was given command in 1628 of a small convoy of three ships bound for Java. Sailing on the Batavia he became isolated from the other vessels in the Atlantic, so that the ship was sailing on its own when, on 4 June 1629, it struck a coral reef on Houtman's Abrolhos (off the coast near modern Geraldton). Pelsaert immediately took a ship's boat to coast Australia and seek rescue in Batavia, but by the time he had returned to Abrolhos in September, a mutinous band led by the deranged second-in-command Jeronimus Cornelisz had killed some 125 survivors in a series of bloody battles and murders. Pelsaert tried the ringleaders where they stood, hanging seven of them. Six more mutineers were sentenced to death in Batavia. Two men, Looes and Pelgrom, were sentenced to be marooned on the mainland. They were put ashore near the mouth of the Hutt River and thus became the first Europeans to settle in Australia. This first edition has the engraved illustrations in their full size, all folding. In the five further editions published over following years the illustrations were reduced in size. The text had its first major outing in English translation when it was included in Harris, Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca (1744), where it was introduced with the comment that it "has appeared very strange to some very able Judges of Voyages, that the Dutch should make so great Account of the Southern Countries, as to cause the Map of them to be laid down in the Pavement of the Stadt-house at Amsterdam, and yet Publish no descriptions of them" (p. 320).The tale of the Batavia has since been the subject of countless studies, novels and even opera. A facsimile of the first edition published by Hordern House in 1994 with an introduction by Martin Terry and full translation by Willem Siebenhaar remains the most sought after of any book we have published. Other major studies include: Henriette Drake-Brockman, Voyage to Disaster (1963); Hugh Edwards, Islands of Angry Ghosts (1966); Philippe Godard, The First and Last Voyage of the Batavia (1993); Mike Dash, Batavia's graveyard (2002); Simon Leys, The Wreck of the Batavia (2006); & most recently, Peter Fitzsimons, Batavia (2011).The engraved illustrations are -I. The Batavia wrecks and the crew and passengers take to the ship's boats (3 scenes).II. The first camps ashore and salvaging goods from the wreck; exploring the other islands (2 scenes).III. The mutiny (full plate).IV. Rescue and restoration of order, including an image of signal fires being lit and another showing sailors on a cutter firing their muskets (3 scenes).V.          De gemmis et lapidibus libri duo; BOUND WITH: Etzler's Isagoge physico-magico- medica: in qua signatur ae non paucorum vegetabilium et animalium tam internae quàm externae accuratè depinguntur.

Ex officina Ioannis Maire, 1647; Etzler's work: Argentinae: Sumptibus Caspari Dietzelij, anno MDCXXXI [1631]. - Full title of De Laet's work: De gemmis et lapidibus libri duo, quibus praemittitur Theophrasti liber de lapidibus, Graece & Latine cum brevibus annotationibus. 8vo (18.2 x 11.4 cm.): [64], 210, [6] pages, with over 40 wood-cut illustrations, several large or full-page (De Laet); [6], 176, [10] pages (Etzler). Both works bound together in contemporary vellum over boards, inked title on spine (vellum slightly soiled, mild browning, small tars and restorations, else very good). PROVENANCE: title page has illegible ink signature (M. Gregoire Mubarly?) dated 1649 as well as small red wax seal with unidentified armorial crest; unidentified ca. 19th century ink stamp with initials "RB" on title page verso. FIRST EDITION OF DE LAET'S WORK ON GEMS AND PRECIOUS STONES, BOUND WITH A VERY RARE ALCHEMICAL TREATISE BY ETZLER. Joannes De Laet (1581- 1649), a Dutch geographer and director of the Dutch West India Company, is best known for his "History of the New World," first published in Dutch in 1625 and subsequently issued in Latin and French editions with updated maps. Towards the end of his life De Laet wrote this work on gems and precious stones. He divides his book into two parts, the first describing the "pellucid and semi-pellucid" (i.e., transparent and semi-transparent) gemstones, while the second describes the "figured" stones that naturally appear shaped in curious and unusual forms (e.g., fossils, corals, geodes, enhydros, asbestos, pumice, etc.). A 48-page Greek-to-Latin interlinear translation of Theophrastus's short treatise, "On Stones" (Peri Lithon), with annotations by De Laet, serves as an introduction to the entire work. De Laet frequently appears bound with copies of "Gemmarum et lapidum historia" by Anselmus De Boodt (1550-1632), which Joannis Maire also published in 1647 and which De Laet may have been intended as a supplement. In the present volume, De Laet is instead bound with a second edition of August Etzler's "Isagoge physico-magico-medica" (1631), which first appeared in 1610. As indicated by its long Latin title, Etzler's work emphasizes the doctrine of signatures in plants and animals, relations of sympathy and antipathy, and the rule of superior celestial over inferior terrestrial bodies. A chapter is devoted to each planet and the plants, animals, human types, places, metals and diseases related to it. Etzler also published two other rare medical-astrological works, "Brevis tractatus fundamentum medicinae aeternum explanans et ad quintuplicis entis morbifici cognitionem viam sternens" (1613), and an introduction to astrological medicine, "Introductorium iatro-mathematicum" (1622).          Ik wensch VE: bij desen mijn Vader en Moeder... [New Year's card]

New Year's wishes to his father and mother. In the national archive in The Hague there is only one Louijssen that matches the period, Cornelis Louijssen of Schouwen, Southern Netherlands. [This Cornelis was accused in 1647 of the death of Jean Fontaine: by throwing a tin glass to his head, Cornelis made Fontaine fall from the stairs. Because of the injuries the latter died a couple of days later. The document testifies the end of the prison time of Louijssen in 1652, following a letter asking for his remission.] We cannot be sure if Philippus had some relationship with Cornelis, further archival research is needed. Some calligraphic elements have been designed to decorate the manuscript as a frame to the actual text of the card. On the bottom especially, on the left and on the right, two animal-like figures enclose the signature and the date of the letter: 'VE Dienst Willingen Soon / Philippus Louijssen: / 1646.' The wishes begin with the dedication: 'Ik wensch VE: bij desen mijn Vader en Moeder eer baer / geluk en Voorsyoet in delen Nieuwe Jaer / trecht ghelog in Jesum Christus Verheven / het welck Godt u en ons allen wil geven. [...]'. Other two couplets follow, one in nine lines and the latter in eight, plus clausa. Brown ink on paper, stains and foxing. Foldings making paper very fragile, damages along the margins, tears on the folds. On the verso the addressee and some notes (numbers and sums) probably due to reuse of the paper, very likely later than the composition. Tape in the middle of the page on the verso, probably to repair a tear or hole. Total: 422 x 327 mm
