Leyden, Bonaventuer en Abraham Elsevier, 1644.Folio. Contemporary pannelled blindtooled calf, skilfully rebacked, spine richly gilt with red morocco title label. It gives an almost 'blow-by-blow description of the campaigns in Brazil from 1630 to the end of 1636, inserting a wealth of geographical and other information about that country. He also gives an excellent account of the preliminary operations of the West India Company from 1621 to 1630, so this work really comprises a history of that organization from its origin to the end of the year 1636' (Boxer, The Dutch in Brazil, p.293). Also included ample accounts of the conquests on the West African coast, the taking of Curaçao and the foundation of New York. - (Small stamp on title-page). - A fine copy.Tiele 630; Cat.          TOPOGRAPHIA BAVARIAE

[Frankfurt am Main]: Matthaeus Merian, 1644 [but ca. 1660]. FIRST EDITION. Written, like a number of Merian books, by the German school official and miscellaneous author Zeiller (1589-1661), this beautifully illustrated publication is part of the splendid and justly celebrated "Topographia" series of books initiated by Merian (1593-1650) and continued by his heirs to a grand total of some 30 folio volumes, issued between 1642-88. The profusely illustrated works are of primary importance for the knowledge of Central European topography of the baroque era, and it is of great interest because of the very considerable artistic value of its engravings. Graesse notes that volumes (like the present one) covering Germany are especially valued for the accuracy of the illustrations, representing the country very much as it was at the time the books were produced. The present volume covers Bavaria, one of the loveliest parts of Germany. According to Wüthrich, Merian the Elder engraved most of the plates here himself, including some of the most beautiful in the series: "the Vogelschau and the Steinerne Brücke of Regensburg, Neuburg on the Danube, Passau, Landshut, and the market square at Munich"--the latter still recognizable to the modern tourist. The title page bears the date of 1644, though the actual publication date was at least 10 years later. Ours is the first printing of the work, without the appendix that would be added to a later, 132-page edition (still with title page dated 1644). The plates here are executed with considerable skill and charm, with the artist including details of costume and touches of daily life whenever scale permits. Because the Merian topographical works are illustrated books that would have invited avid use, they are usually found with serious defects; the present well-preserved copy is an exception.. 311 x 210 mm. (12 1/4 x 8 1/4"). 38, [2], 39-84 pp., [4] leaves. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum, holes for ties (now missing). With engraved title page, TWO FOLDING MAPS, AND 52 PLATES (40 double-page, mounted on stubs) SHOWING 91 VIEWS. Front free endpaper with early ink owner's signature; occasional early ink marginalia. Wüthrich IV,108, no. 19; Brunet V, 1529-30; Graesse VI, 509. Vellum somewhat soiled, but the binding entirely sound and very satisfactory. Not infrequent but always faint browning to margins, a hint of soiling or foxing here and there, other minor defects, but still an excellent copy internally, generally clean, rather fresh, and with strong impressions of the plates.Written, like a number of Merian books, by the German school official and miscellaneous author Zeiller (1589-1661), this beautifully illustrated publication is part of the splendid and justly celebrated "Topographia" series of books initiated by Merian (1593-1650) and continued by his heirs to a grand total of some 30 folio volumes, issued between 1642-88. Meditationes de prima philosophia. Part 1 (of 2) only. Amsterdam: Jan Blaue, 1644. [2] 3-48 pp., signatures A4 b-f4. Woodcut printer's device on title and ornamental initials. Two works bound in one volume. 4to (203 x 152 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked retaining much of the original spine and the gilt lettering piece, spine with 5 raised bands (extremities rubbed, corners slightly scuffed), red-sprinkled edges, original endpapers. Text generally crisp and clean with very minor occasional spotting and light age toning, first title little dust-soiled, small worm track at fore-edge in a few central quires mended with tissue, 2 ink smudges to lower blank margin of p.82, small light dampstain to blank margin of a few leaves. Provenance: [Johann Friedrich] Goldhagen (inscription on front flyleaf dated 1760 recording it as a gift from Professor Hoppe); faint illegible ink stamp to title page. A fine copy with ample margins. ---- Norman 622; Guibert, p. 118; Tchemerzine II, p. 787; NLM/Krivatsy 9512. - FIRST EDITION OF DESCARTES' SYSTEM OF PHYSICS, in which he developed his theory of vortices. Based in part on his then unpublished work Le monde, which treated the creation and function of the universe in completely mechanistic terms, Descartes' Principia provides a systematic statement of his metaphysics and natural philosophy. The first part, De principiis cognitionis humanae (Of the Principles of Human Knowledge) deals with the nature of motion, rest, force, and action. He defines motion in Book II and distinguishes the difference between translation and 'the force that brings about this translation.' Descartes was careful in the Principia to qualify his mechanistic Copernican views with the idea that all motion is relative. 'His vortical theory allowed him to argue that since the earth is at rest in its surrounding medium it remains unmoved, although it, together with its entire vortex, necessarily circles the sun' (Norman). Descartes' system represents a truly comprehensive look at the universe in a fundamentally new, mechanistic and non-teleological way. His vortex theory was the starting point for all serious work in physical theory in the mid-17th century, including Newton. The fourth and final part of the work contains the first scientific theory of magnetism. II. Guibert, pp. 45-46. - THIRD LATIN EDITION, and the first Amsterdam edition, of Descartes' Meditationes (first Paris 1641), containing his famous conclusion "Cogito ergo sum", here without all the objections and replies. The book is made up of 6 meditations, in which Descartes first discards all belief in things which are not absolutely certain, and then tries to establish what can be known for sure. The "Meditations" consist of the presentation of his metaphysical system in its most detailed level. The publisher announces that, for a better understanding of Descartes' philosophy, he added Gassendi's Disquisitiones Metaphysicae; this, however, is not included here. - Visit our website for additional images and information.          Supernatural sights and apparitions seen in London, June 30. 1644. interpreted. With a mathematicall discourse of the now imminent conjunction of Iupiter and Mars, 26 July, 1644. the effects which either here or in some neere counties from thence may be expected.

London printed for T.V. and are to be sold by I.S. in Little Brittaine 1644 - 4to., 16pp., with two large zodiacal text figures, generally a little spotted and browned, upper margin of title cut close, but with no loss of letters, errata slip pasted over blank foot of last page, bound in mid-19th century black half roan gilt, rather worn. A pretty good copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate of Sir William Grace, Baronet.> First edition. Wing L.2249. 1644 saw the beginning of Lilly's long series of pamphlets of prophecy. In the present, his astrological predictions were vague but portentously gloomy. 'Upon a suddaine and unexpected accident, the dissipation and dissolving of some misterious close consultation and mischievous plot against our State and Common-wealth is portended; the disunion and disagreement of the projectors amongst themselves, and all this is forraigne parts as well as in England: a renting in peeces or mutinous disturbance of some monarchy neare hand, or some Austrian family or Principality, &c. A commotion of the meanest sort of people against some principall man, or majistracy: Losse to Spaine; That we English with our Armies shall travers all the in land countries of this Kingdom, &c. This is all I either can or dare say. M.L.' 1644 marked the third phase of the English Civil War, with victories for the Royalists at Copredy Bridge and Lostwithiel and a major defeat at Marston Moor. Lilly's populist predictions and pseudo-scientific prognostications sold like hot-cakes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Govaerdt Schoevaerdts, Brussel 1644 - RARE VOLUME, published in Brussels in 1644. Full title: Het Leven Ende Miraekelen [Mirakelen] Vanden H. Philippus Nerius Stichter Vande Vergaderinghe Van Het Oratorie - Ghetrocken Uyt Verscheyden Zijne Beschreuen Leuens - Door Eenen Priester Vande Selue Vergaderinghe [OR Ghetrochen uyt verscheyden sijne beschreven levens-door eenen priester vande selve vergaederinghe]. TEXT in DUTCH. No illustrations. With a few woodcut decorative initials, & a few woodcut endpieces. Very scarce work, with Worldcat showing merely ONE LIBRARY holding a copy worldwide (Bibliothèque Nationale de France), which is the LATER 1696 Ghendt edition, & notes "La vie et les miracles de St. Philippe Neri" (The life & miracles of St. Philip Neri). "Philip Romolo Neri (1515-1595), known as the Apostle of Rome, was an Italian priest noted for founding a society of secular clergy called the Congregation of the Oratory. He was born in Florence, & received his early teaching from the friars at San Marco, the famous Dominican monastery in Florence. He chose to relocate to Rome in 1533. He cared for the sick & poor which, in later life, gained him the title of 'Apostle of Rome'. He also ministered to the prostitutes of the city. In 1538 he entered into the home mission work for which he became famous. In 1548, together with his confessor, Persiano Rossa, Neri founded the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity of Pilgrims & Convalescents, whose primary object was to minister to the needs of the thousands of poor pilgrims who flocked to Rome. In 1551 Neri received all the minor orders, & was ordained deacon, & finally priest. He thought of going to India as a missionary, but was dissuaded by friends who saw that there was abundant work to be done in Rome. In 1556 he began the institute with which his name is more especially connected, that of the Oratory. The members of the society undertook various kinds of mission work throughout Rome, notably the preaching of sermons in different churches every evening, a completely new idea at that time. He also spent much of his time hearing confessions, & effected many conversions in this way. Neri considered a cheerful temper to be more Christian than a melancholy one, & carried this spirit into his whole life. This was the secret of Neri's popularity & of his place in the folklore of the Roman poor. Many miracles were attributed to him. When his body was autopsied it was found that two of his ribs had been broken, an event attributed to the expansion of his heart while fervently praying in the catacombs. Philip Neri was a mystic of the highest order, a man of ecstasies & visions, whose greatest happiness was to be alone with God. Yet at the call of charity he gave up the delight of prayer & sought God by helping his neighbour. His whole life is that of the contemplative in action. Neri died on 25 May 1595, after having spent the day hearing confessions & receiving visitors. Neri was beatified by Paul V in 1615, & canonized by Gregory XV in 1622. His memorial is celebrated on 26 May. His body is in the Chiesa Nuova ("New Church") in Rome. Neri is one of the influential figures of the Counter-Reformation, mainly for converting to personal holiness many of the influential people within the Church itself." Small thick volume.
