POEMS: Written by Wil. Shake-speare. Gent.

London: Printed by Tho. Cotes, and are to be sold by John Benson, dwelling in St. Dunstans Church-yard, 1640 - SHAKESPEARE (William): POEMS: Written by Wil. Shake-speare. Gent.  London: Printed by Tho. Cotes, and are to be sold by John Benson, dwelling in St. Dunstans Church-yard, 1640. 8vo, engraved Portrait Frontispiece by William Marshall after Droeshout, with verses below. Two letterpress title pages, both with woodcut printer’s device, the second undated, title-page extended and remargined at bottom, tiny abrasion at top of frontispiece, catchword *3 carelessly printed and punched through, final leaf (M4) extended; russet morocco by Bedford, covers gilt paneled, marbled endpapers, spine and edges gilt. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. This edition by Benson brings together all but eight of the sonnets: “A Lover’s Complaint”, “The Passionate Pilgrim” (mostly not by Shakespeare), “The Phoenix and the Turtle” (attributed to Shakespeare), and elegies and other poems honoring Shakespeare by Jonson, Milton, Digges, Herrick, Strode, Carew, and others. Benson famously reorganized the sonnets, probably out of concern that an old-fashioned sonnet sequence would not appeal to the generation of the Cavalier Poets. Many are run together to form poems of twenty-eight lines or more, and all are given titles. Benson also made some effort to disguise the homoerotic content of some sonnets, perhaps most strikingly in his changes to Sonnet 101 (“O truant Muse, what shall be thy amends”), which he runs together with Sonnet 100 under the title “An invocation of his Muse” while he also switches the gender of the pronouns to make the poet’s lover female.         Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq regionum Nova Descriptio.

Blaeu's map of the southeastern portion of North America. The map depicts the region from present day northern Florida to Chesapeake Bay. France is shown as governing the southern portion of this land (though they had been forced out in fact some time before by the Spanish) and Great Britain as ruler of the northeast. As pointed out by Burden, this map improves on the Hondius-Mercator map of the same region, and it provided the best depiction of the region until 1700. Its handsome cartouche surrounded by full figure Native Americans and its elaborate calligraphy contribute to make it one of the most artistically successful maps of 17th century America. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition. Cumming, 41; Burden, The Mapping of North America, 253; Goss, 31

Nicholas Machiavel's Prince. ... Translated out of Italian into English; By E[dward]. D[acres]

London: R. Bishop for William Hils & Daniel Pakeman, 1640 First edition in English of one of the great books of the Renaissance and a classic of political philosophy. Machiavelli, long a diplomat for the Florentine Republic, was personally acquainted with many of the great leaders of the Renaissance including Lorenzo de Medici (the dedicatee of Il Principe), Louis XII of France, Emperor Maximilian, Catherine Sforza, and Piero Soderini. In 1502 he was sent as the Florentine envoy to the court of Cesare Borgia, duke of Valentinois. In Borgia he found an audacious and strong willed leader capable of deception and violence to achieve his ends, yet a man who appeared at all times both controlled and diplomatically prudent. Borgia provided the model for Machiavelli's ideal prince, Valentino. His book addressed the problem of the unification of a self-reliant Italy. "It was Machiavelli's intense preoccupation with this problem- what a state is and how to found one in existing circumstances- which caused the many riddles of his speculative writings ... He was by no means indifferent to private virtue ... but in the realm of politics he postponed morals to political expediency" (Britannica 11th ed.). "The Prince is far more than a book of directions to any one of the many Italian princelings. ... Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind. ... Politics was a science to be divorced entirely from ethics, and nothing must stand in the way of its machinery. Many of the remedies he proposed for the rescue of Italy were eventually applied. His concept of the qualities demanded from a ruler and the absolute need of a national militia came to fruition in the monarchies of the seventeenth century and their national armies" (Printing and the Mind of Man 63). Machiavelli is universally regarded as one of the great thinkers in political philosophy. At the same time, Machiavelli's name has entered everyday usage, connoting sinister machinations and the dark side of politics and power. His name was a familiar part of the English language even in Shakespeare's time, for Hamlet says "I'll put the murderous Machiavel to school." Macaulay wrote, "Out of his [Niccolo Machiavelli's] surname they have coined an epithet for a knave, and out of his Christian name a synonym for the devil." Contemporary English gilt-ruled sheep. Some contemporary marginalia and highlighting. Some wear to spine. Fine.

Cfr. Iccu; Graesse, VI, 343..

In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German."

Early edition of the Dutch translation of a provisional agreement made between the Dutch States General and the Portuguese ambassador Francisco de Zousa Continho on the jurisdiction and territory of Fort Galle in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), one of the most important outposts both strategically and as a trading centre. The Dutch had captured it from the Portuguese in 1640 and they had been fighting in the region since that time. The treaty notes the losses and battles caused by the dispute between the two powers and the demands made by the Dutch government to secure their position in the East Indies. This includes their demand for a yearly supply of cinnamon, through which the Portuguese are to pay off their debt, and restitution by both parties for the losses they caused one another. The parties agree to honor the treaty and not trespass on each other's rights and territories. In very good condition.

Quest'opera è ritenuta di capitale importanza nell'ambito delle pubblicazioni seicentesche dedicate al giusnaturalismo e alla tradizione ebraica.
