Conquista espiritual hecha por los religiosos de la Compañía de Jesús, en las Provincias del Paraguay, Paraná, Uruguay y Tape

Imprenta del Reyno, Madrid 1639 - "Ruiz de Montoya. Notable First Edition of his Conquista Espiritual, of Outmost Importance for the Information About the Jesuit Missions in Paraguay, Uruguay and the Bandeirantes of Brazil". 4to., fine elegant mid 20th century full calf binding; gilt decoration on both covers; preserved in a box. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION. Important work on the customs, religion and life of the Indians of those regions by a native of Lima, a celebrated missionary in the region of Paraguay. Contains much valuable information on the Indians, their religious rites, etc. It is full of bitter and most vehement complaints os the inhuman conduct of the Spaniards with regard to the Indians. "It is well known the "Conquista spiritual" is a work of prime importance on the subject of the infiltration of the bandeiras' of Sao Paulo into Paraguay. Montoya was an eyewitness of the penetration of the bandeirantes' from the beginning until the disaster of Guairá. He describes the Paulistas' military strategies, the manner used to bring Indian prisoners to Sao Paulo, and was the first historian to describe the attire of the bandeirantes'. His activities against them are only too well known" (BdM). *European Americana 639/100; Medina, BHA 1001; Palau 282092; Sabin 74029; Borba de Moraes 587; Rodrigues 1693.         Mundi Lapis Lydius sive Vanitas per Veritate Falsi Accusata & Conuicta.

Antuerp: Typis Viduae Ioan. Cnobbari., 1639. First edition. Small quarto. pp [28], 249, [27]. One of the great Flemish emblem books, with an impressive engraved title-page by Theodore van Merlen and fifty beautiful engraved emblems by Andries Pauwels after Abraham van Diepenbeek. The charm and importance of these illustrations, intended to guide us away from Vanity and towards the Truth, lie in the touchingly detailed glimpses many of them provide of domestic and social scenes of the time. Each plate is followed by two or three pages of text elaborating on the general lesson. Many of these texts have decorative woodcut endpieces. The plates are clear and sharp. Eighteenth century panelled calf, sympathetically rebacked.A few early ownership signatures. Some light wear to the covers. Very good indeed. A bright copy.

        America Septentrionalis

Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1639. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 21.5". 1639. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 21.5". 1639. This beautiful, large-scale map is one of the earliest Dutch depictions of North America. As such, it is also one of the most influential, particularly for its rendering of California as an island. This myth, which originated in literature in the early 16th century, found its seeming confirmation through this highly detailed map and its subsequent replication and dissemination. While the west provides the maps point of historical interest, it is in the east that one finds its beauty and elegance. The continents Atlantic coastline cascades along the vertical axis of the double-page map, extending from as far north as the Arctic Circle down to the northern part of South America and including the West Indies. Its ample labeling and detailed undulations demonstrate the wide extent of geographic knowledge that characterized the Dutch Golden Age. Notable inclusions are Iames Towne (Jamestown) in Virginia, Manhates (Manhattan), Lake Champlain and an early reference to the Great Lakes (Lac des Iroquois). In the lesser-known interior of the continent, a number of explanatory notes describe preliminary discoveries. Moreover, the small renderings of native wild animals are some of the earliest depictions of creatures, such as the Longhorn steer, buffalo, and wild horse, that Dutch explorers encountered in their incursions into hitherto unknown lands. The coast of Labrador for the first time includes Dutch terms, depicting the heightened whaling activities in the region. In South America, Hondius maps the legendary Lake Parima and the city of Manoa or the fabled kingdom of El Dorado along its banks. Following Sir Walter Raleigh's 1595 publication of "The Discoverie of the Large, Rich, and Bewtiful Empyre of Guiana", in which he connected the city of Manoa with El Dorado, European interest in the regain grew considerably in the 17th century and various explorers set out in search of gold in Guiana. The city and the lake would continue to appear on maps until the early 1800s. This is the rare first state of the map, without any imprint in the lower left cartouche. French text on verso. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the centerfold and minor spotting along the lower border. Narrow margins to neat line from binders cropping. Hard to find. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of a prolific map publishing business, which helped to propel the Dutch to lead the Golden Age of cartography. When Jodocus the elder died in 1612, his wife Colette ran the business until their sons came of age to join the firm. During this time, their daughter Elisabeth married Johannes Jansson and the two of them helped Colette run the business. Jodocus & Colette's youngest son, Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) later ran the business along with his extended family.

Historia de la celestial vocacion, missiones apostolicas y gloriosa muerte, del P. Marcelo Francisco Mastrili

First edition. One of the rarest Jesuit relations; it narrates the life, missionary work and martyrdom of Father Marcelo Mastrili (1603 - 1637) in Japan on Mount Unzen (outskirts of Nagasaki) under the Tokugawa Shogunate. Mastrili had sailed to Japan with aims of reconverting the "fallen priest" Christovao Ferreira who had renounced his faith. Ferreira (c. 1580 - 1650) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, he worked in Japan from 1609 to 1633 and was the head of the Jesuit Order in that country during the religious purges against Christianity in 1633; after being tortured for hours, committed apostasy, subsequently changing his name to Sawano Chuan and registering at a Buddhist temple. Mastrili was arrested shortly after landing - the relation of his travesty towards Japan is also noted-; he was then submitted to torture and beheaded. Mysticism did not elude Mastrili, he reported to having visions of St. Francis Xavier who cured him twice. Furthermore, it contains accounts of missions to Goa, Mindanao and Japan.

First edition. The wealth of information included in this short tract, although brief, is remarkable, with news mainly on the Mindanao and Jolo islands, their inhabitants (making mention of the privateering activities held by the Jolo islands natives), defences, nature and distances to other islands, an Embassy from Corralat (a present was brought, considered to be small and denied) and another from Cachil Monacay and belligerent actions taken against the region. It certainly constitutes one of the earliest available sources of information on the region. Exceedingly rare, not a single copy sold at auction (according to AE); according to CCPBE (Catálogo colectivo del patrimonio bibliográfico Español) there is no copy in Spain and according to Tavera -one of the foremost bibliographers on the Philippines- only a copy in the British Library could be found. Provenance: offered in 1922 by Maggs, lot 220. Tavera, 691.

A beautiful map that is one of the most interesting maps of the American southeast. The map is based upon the Jodocus Hondius' map of the same area-Jansson was Hondius' son-in-law-with some updating. This shows the influence of the Hondius map, and the way his map led to an extensive dissemination of both its correct information and its errors. Hondius's map was a combination of information from two sixteenth century maps, one of the Carolinas, and one of the northern Florida/Georgia region. These were combined, and in the process many errors were introduced, not the least of which was the straightening out of the St. John's River so that it flowed from an non-existent lake located to the northwest of the mouth of the river. This lake, which would become Lake Apalachy, appeared on this and other maps well into the eighteenth century. Jansson's map is updated from the Hondius version, including coats-of-arms to indicate the spheres of influence claimed by the French in the Georgia region and the British in the Carolinas. Jansson follows Hondius in the south, but he more accurately depicts the coast in the Carolinas, based on Hessel Gerritsz's map of 1631, and has a more correct image of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, indicating for the first time "Newport nesa".This map shines not only in its interesting cartographic history, but also in its decorative appeal. It is a particularly fine example of the aesthetics of 17th-century Dutch cartography. The elegant calligraphy and compass roses combine with the ships in the sea and the rhumb lines in wonderful embellishment. The fully colored title and scale cartouches, the latter which shows naked putti and the former half-naked natives, add a final flourish that makes the map a delight to look at. All in all an historic map that is a very fine decorative example of the great age of Dutch cartography Dimensioni 500 380mm
