Very rare re-issue, enlarged with an index and several documents, of a history of the Dutch religious controversies that arose during the Seven Years Truce. The work includes an almost verbatim report by Bernard Dwingelo of the acts of the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), which ended with the official condemnation and banishment of one of the two parties, the Arminians or Remonstrants. The main issue had been the Calvinist article of faith regarding the issue of predestination, which was rejected by the Leiden theologian Jacob Arminius (1560-1609). Arminius's more liberal views were opposed by his strict Calvanist colleague Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641).Title-page slight browned and thumbed, boards rubbed along the extremities. Overall in very good condition.

First and only edition of a Dutch translation of the London Pharmacopoeia, which had appeared in dozens of Latin (beginning in 1618) and English (beginning in 1649) editions. Although a slightly revised Latin edition had appeared in 1677, the Dutch publisher Ten Hoorn apparently based his translation on the 1650 edition, so that his readers miss out on the recipe for Irish whiskey. It nevertheless contains much interesting information for Dutch readers. Among the many ingredients used in the recipes were the wonderful horn of a unicorn, the skull of a man killed by violence (translated as "the skull of a man who died in good health"), twelve types of excrement (for which the Dutch translator used five different words) and fresh cheese (pp. 26-28). A list of other medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final pages.With a bookplate. Binding soiled and spotted, text with some spots and a few small holes; lacking front endpapers. A good copy of a rare pharmacopoeia.

A collection of portraits of members of the mercantile and banking dynasty founded by Jakob Fugger (circa 1430-1518), each portrait accompanied by appropriate heraldic insignia, and displayed within an architectural or grotesque frame of impressive quality and size (platemarks 340 × 230 mm). On the versos of the portraits are printed brief genealogical notices apparently supplied by Marcus Henning (1561-circa 1622). The book has been long recognised as a valuable document for the history of costume, especially for women's clothing. He was soon employed by Philipp Eduard, Octavianus Secundus, and Anton Fugger on a project to engrave their family's portraits, and by 1592 he had completed sixty or more prints. 4 A small selection of these (ten portraits, including those of Custos's three patrons) was issued in 1592, in quarto format, as I cones decem illustr. Baronum et Fuggarorum gente qui Domicilia Augustae Vindelic. constituta habent.5In 1593 appeared the first edition of Fuggerorum et Fuggerarum quae in familia natae... Imagines, a folio presenting seventy-one portraits, each imposed within an engraved frame appropriate to the sitter's rank and sex (eleven different frames were designed). 6 After Custos's death (1616 or 1617), Lukas and Wolfgang Kilian brought the work up-to-date, adding to the end of the series portraits of Margareta Fugger-Caretto (1592-1652) and other members of the family who had been born (or reached maturity) since 1593, and interpolating portraits of Ulrich Fugger (1441-1510), Sigmund Friedrich Fugger (1542-1600), and others of whom models had just become available. Altogether, the new edition presents 127 portraits. Sixty-two portraits, eleven designs of frames, and the alle­gorical title-page, are printed from plates attributable to Custos. Lukas, the more talented of Dominicus' stepsons, engraved twenty-nine portraits and one new frame; his younger brother, Wolfgang, contributed thirty-six por­traits, three frames, and the large print of the Fugger coat-of-arms placed at the beginning of the volume. 7 A local draughtsman, Johann Mathias Kager (1575-1634), city painter of Augsburg after 1615, was designer of the four frames engraved by the two Kilians. 8 Unlike the 1593 edition, which seems to have been limited and distributed by the family, the 1618 edi­tion was a commercial undertaking by the newly-established publisher Andreas Aperger. Backgrounds were strengthened with cross-hatching and shading, and the portraits occasionally were updated. 9 The original portrait of Raymund Fugger (1489-1535), for example, depicts him as a young man (1593 edition, pl. 8); the Kilians added a beard to convey the appearance of old age (1618, pl. 8). 10 Hans Jakob Fugger (1516-1575) likewise was transformed from a middle-aged (1593, pl. 12) to an old man (1618, pl. 12). 11 Custos's portrait of Helena Fugger-Madruzzo (1593, pl. 59), who had married Georg Fugger (1560-1634) in 1583 and by 1611 borne him twenty-one children, was replaced by an entirely new portrait engraved by Wolfgang Kilian, which depicts her in old age (1618, pl. 86). Custos's portrait of the celebrated entrepreneur Hans Fugger (1531-1598) also was replaced by a new one, en­graved by Lukas Kilian, a close copy except in one detail: in the original, the subject is depicted with a notebook in his right hand (1593, pl. 23); in the substitute, the book rests on the table top (1618, pl. 74). Several of Custos's portraits were excluded from the new edition, among them one of Anna Jacobäa Fugger (1593, pl. 47), who in 1582 had brought scandal upon the family when she fled the Dominican convent St. Katharina in Augsburg, converted, and afterwards married the Protestant Heinrich vii Graf zu Ortenburg; 12 and the portrait of Barbara Fugger-Bäsinger, wife of Jakob Fugger (1398-1469) (1593, pl. 3). 13 The book has been long recognised as a valuable document for the history of costume, especially for women's clothing. 14 Indeed, its most striking feature is the high proportion of women portrayed: nearly half of the portraits in the 1618 edition (sixty-two of 127) depict women, the wives and daughters of the Fuggers in almost equal number. Some illustrious male members of the Fugger dynasty are unaccountably omitted. In their stead appear women - some, like Ursula Fugger-Lichtenstein (pl. 16), the patroness of the Society of Jesus in Augsburg, had attained celebrity; 15 but others are obscure, and had no progeny, such as the Benedictine nun Maria Fugger (pl. 69). 16 Perhaps the three instigators of the project choose the subjects, or the choice may have depended on the availability of authen­tic models for the engravers to copy. 17 The matrices of the portraits were restruck (without the engraved frames) at Augsburg in 1620 for an edition with German text, published by Sara Mang, under the title Contrafahe der Herren Fugger und Frawen Fuggerinnen. Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an outspoken character in the Dutch political scene of the seventeenth century. As a follower of Johan de Wit (1625-1672), de la Court became unpopular when the republican experiment backfired. Sinryke Fabulen was a great opportunity for him to carry out his political ideas disguised as fables. This book is a beautiful example of the synergy between fable literature and Dutch emblematic structure. The stories each contain a picture, a Latin motto and a moral explanation.       [Jodocus Hondius Jnr., Amsterdam, 1618] - Copper engraved 92 x 135 mm A beautiful and finely engraved miniature celestial map in two hemispheres, published by the younger Hondius for Petrus Bertius' Tabularum geographicarum contractarum libri septem. The hemispheres depict numerous personifications of the constellations, each labelled with its Latin title. All of the signs of the zodiac are represented, along with other major star-groups, including Ursa Major, Bootes, Cygnus, Andromeda, Cetus, Orion, Canis Major, and Centaurus. The spheres are both divided into twelve sections, each governed by a particular zodiacal sign, the symbols for which appear in the borders of each hemisphere. The spaces around the outside of the spheres are decorated in elaborate strap-work, and a secondary title above the plate mark reads 'De Sphaera Caelesti,' illustrating its use in a section of the atlas 'concerning the celestial spheres.' The latin text on the verso describes classical perceptions of the heavens and earth, with particular reference to the writing of Aelius Gallus, Varro, Ennius, Plato, Aristotle, and the influence of ancient Egyptian and Chaldaean philosophy and astrology. The majority of the plates for Petrus Bertius' Tabularum geographicarum contractarum libri septem were reduced versions of those published in the Mercator-Hondius Atlas Minor. The first edition, published by Cornelis Claes, was published in Amsterdam in 1600, using a suite of miniature maps first published in the Caert-Thresoor by Barent Langenes. Over the next fifty years, the Bertius atlas was issued numerous times in Latin, French, and German, its collection of maps continually increasing with new plates, the majority of which were engraved by Bertius' brothers-in-law Jodocus Hondius and van den Keere. Hondius the Younger's first issue of the Bertius atlas, published in 1616, was an immediate commercial success, and the second edition appeared later the same year. Petrus Bertius (14th November 1565 â€" 13th October 1629) was a Flemish theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer and was related to Jodocus Hondius Sr. and Pieter van den Keere by marriage. Bertius studied at the University of Leiden and later traveled in Germany and Russia. In 1620 he emigrated to France where he was appointed as a cosmographer to the court Louis XIII. Bertius published a number of folio maps, but never published an atlas of his own. His maps were either separately published or included in atlases and books by other publishers. Jodocus Hondius (14th October 1563 - 12th February 1612) was a Dutch Flemish cartographer, engraver, and publisher. Hondius is most famous for reviving the primacy of the work of Gerard Mercator, through the publication of his Atlas, and the smaller Atlas Minor, in the early seventeenth century, at a time when cartography was largely dominated by Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The Mercator-Hondius Atlas was composed of maps pulled from plates Hondius had purchased from Mercator's grandson, as well as thirty-six new plates Hondius commissioned, and in many cases engraved, himself. He is also believed to have been the chief engraver of the plates for John Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. Following his death, he was succeeded by his sons, Jodocus the Younger and Henricus, as well as his son in law Jan Jansson. Condition: Excellent crisp impression. V.2).Von 1559 bis 1574 erschien in Basel die "Ecclesiastica historia", eine von Matthias Flacius angeregte und geleitete Gemeinschaftsarbeit mehrerer lutherischer Theologen, den sog. "Magdeburger Centurien". Dieses einzige, größere, auf Quellenforschungen beruhende kirchengeschichtliche Werk des Protestantismus der Reformationszeit behandelt - nach Jahrhunderten (Centurien) eingeteilt - die Kirchengeschichte bis zum Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts. Die Bearbeiter der "Magdeburger Centurien" suchen zu beweisen, daß die Papstkirche im Lauf der Jahrhunderte immer mehr von der ursprünglichen Reinheit und Einfalt der apostolischen Kirche abgefallen sei und die Reformationskirche, die sich auf viele "testes veritatis" der früheren Jahrhunderte berufen könne, keine Neuerung sei (Vgl. dazu Bautz II, 43-48). Zur Widerlegung der protestantischen Magdeburger Centuriatoren veröffentlichte La Bigne in seiner "Bibliotheca veterum patrum" über 200 Werke der Kirchenväter in systematischer Ordnung, um den Nachweis zu erbringen, daß die katholische Kirche nie von der Lehre und der Verfassung der Alten Kirche abgewichen sei. Ein Unternehmen, an das sich bisher noch keiner gewagt hatte. Die Bibliotheca erschien erstmals von 1575-79 in 9 Bänden, wurde wiederholt nachgedruckt und vermehrt, und erreichte in der Ausgabe von Lyon (1677) bereits 27 Bände. Vorliegende Ausgabe umfasste 15 (in 19) Bände (die alle im gleichen Jahr gedruckt wurden) und wurde 1622 um einen Indexband erweitert. Die beiden Teile enthalten Werke u.a. von Filastrius v. Brescia, Didymus dem Blinden, Apollinaris von Laodicea, Philon v. Karpasia, Chrysologus Petrus u. Sixtus III. Die Bände stammen aus dem aufgelassenen Grazer Karmeliterkloster St. Joseph. LA BIGNE (auch Binius od. Bignaeus) Marguerin de (1546 od. 47 - 1589 od. 90); Theologe u. Patrologe. L.B. entstammte einer alten normannischen Adelsfamilie. Nach dem Erwerb des Lizentiats der Theologie an der Universität Caen bekleidete er dort das Amt des Rektors. Auf der Sorbonne setzte er seine Studien fort und wurde zum Doktor der Theologie promoviert. Die Herausgabe der "Bibliotheca veterum patrum" brachte ihm eine Domherrenstelle in Bayeux ein. Sein persönliches kirchenpolitisches Engagement für die Rechte seines Stiftes führte zum Konflikt mit seinem Bischof und zu L.B.s Resignation in Bayeux. Kurz darauf verstarb er in Paris. 2°. Tit. Pasta española del siglo XVIII, lomo liso, tejuelo rojo: suarez. el passagero. Segunda edición, publicada un año después que la princeps de Marid. En El Passagero, Suárez de Figueroa da inestimables informaciones sobre las costumbres de la España de su tiempo. Esta merecidamente considerada como obra maestra, escrita en diálogos, narra el viaje de un maestro en Artes y Teología, un militar, un orífice y un doctor –que debe representar al propio Figueroa– entre Madrid y Barcelona, camino de Italia. Los personajes dialogan sobre las comedias y los comediantes, la vida universitaria en Alcalá, las mujeres, el gobierno, la sociedad de entonces. No faltan las burlas, como era habitual en su tiempo, contra muchos ingenios de la época: Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Juan de Arguijo, Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, Cervantes. Hay estudios que afirman que fue Suarez de Figueroa quien escribió el Quijote apócrifo y no Avellaneda basándose en el análisis del léxico de El Quijote y de El Pasajero, donde queda suficientemente de manifiesto la personalidad del autor, su espíritu crítico respecto a la sociedad de su tiempo, las nada cordiales relaciones que mantuvo con sus colegas –en particular con Alarcón– y la antipatía que sentía hacia Cervantes. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. $650. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.)       1618 - Leiden, 1618. Original colour. Sheet 410 x 530mm. Trimmed within neatline. A very unusual separate-issue map of West Frisia, engraved by Dierick Albertsen, his only known map. Along the top is the main title decorated with eleven city arms, with four propects of cities including Harlingen & Leeuwarden; down the left are five vignettes of costumes of antiquity and down the right are five vignettes of modern dress; and along the bottom are seven more prospects. In the bottom right corner is a large dedication cartouche including the scale. This map is more frequently seen as published by Frederick de Wit in 1665.

      The volume comprises letters on the progress and evolution of the missionary work of the Jesuits all over the World, encompassing Austria, Spain (Aragon, Toledo), Germany, France, and most notably, some of the earliest accounts of the missions at Mexico (occupying pp. 251-283) and the Philippines (occupying pp. 284-296). As for the Philippines, it contains news from -amongst others- the Collegium Manillanum, Mindanao, Residentia Silana, Residentia Zebuana, Samarensis, Panamd. A fine copy of an important collection of Jesuits reports, covering some of the most influential European countries and Spanish colonial settlements in Asia and America. Provenance: armorial ex libris on front pastedown of Annibal Fernandes Thomaz, author of the "Boletim de Bibliographia Portugueza".

These are followed by 30 engraved views or scenes most with a Latin distich at the foot. Interleaved. Sprinkled calf (ca. 1700), gold-tooled spine.

      Atlas van Stolk 1027 note; STCN (4 copies); WorldCat (5 copies); cf. Hollstein XXXVIII, C. J. Visscher 116a-120a, 122a-123a (8 views); Muller, Hist. prenten, suppl., 1285B; Simoni, D38. The most complete copy we have seen of the 1618 edition of a rare book of noteworthy sights, views, and scenes from daily life and from trade and industry in the Netherlands (primarily Holland). It was intended in part for students to use as an album amicorum. The plates include salting and smoking haring, ship-building, making hemp rope ("cannabis" in Holland in 1618!), Dutch peasants, ice skating, wind-powered and horse-drawn ice sledges, wind-powered carts on the beach and many more. One copy of this edition at Amsterdam University has exactly the same plates as the present, while another copy there, and copies at Leiden University and the Pierpont Morgan Library, have fewer.The heraldic plates vary even more from copy to copy and were probably assembled according to the wishes (and pocketbook) of the buyer. Ours has 8, the Van Stolk copy of the undated edition has 4 and the most complete Leiden copy of the 1616 edition has 7, but each has heraldic plates not in the others.

Ten complete and very rare etched and engraved architectural-ornamental print series (each with 6 prints), designed and executed by the leading Paris architect and engraver Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682). "One of the most inventive and prolific ornamental draftsmen of all time. ... Le Pautre's importance is vast. ... All Europe followed his influence until the end of the eighteenth century." (Millard). Working for the Manufacture des Gobelins and on his own account, Le Pautre executed much work for Louis XIV. The work also provides a survey of Paris fashion in interior decoration fairly early in the reign of Louis XIV and helped to determine and establish the richly ornamental style we associate with Louis and his circles.
