L'Atlas ou Meditations cosmographiques de la Fabrique du Monde

Judoci Hondij,, Amsterodami, 1613 - The first 'atlas' Folio (480 by 330 mm), engraved title heightened in gold, (3) pp, engraved portrait of Mercator and Hondius, (9) pp., 374 pp., 45 double-page engraved maps, engraved half title (Galliae) heightened in gold, 30 double-page and one single-page engraved maps, engraved half title (Germaniae) heightened in gold, 29 double-page engraved maps, engraved half title (Italiae, Slavoniae et Graeciae) heightened in gold, 45 double-page engraved maps, 18 ff, full original hand colour throughout, 150 maps in total, contemporary mottled calf, spine divided into seven sections with raised bands, gilt, restoration to capitals and lower back. A fine example of a great atlas. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) would not begin his great 'Atlas' or 'Cosmography' until relatively late in life. The impetus for this came when he was employed as cosmographer to Duke William IV of Kleve, in 1563. Mercator's intention was to produce a work that consisted of five books and covered the whole world. The first book would cover the creation; the second the heavens; the third geography; the fourth history; and the fifth chronology. He intended to draw all the maps, write all the text, and cut all the plates himself. Unsurprisingly, the ambitious project would require more time than he could afford to give it, and he was only able to complete a few of the parts: the creation; the maps for Ptolemy's 'Geographia' - part of the geographical section - in 1578; and four of the modern parts. The first three were published together in 1585 and covered France, the Low Countries, and Germany. The fourth part, covering Italy, the Balkans, and Greece, appeared in 1589. Mercator died on December 2, 1594, leaving the responsibility for completion of the cosmography to his son Rumold. Mercator's work is referred to as the first atlas, because he was the first to give a collection of curated maps this name, reflected in the famous engraved title-page showing King Atlas measuring the world with a pair of dividers. It is often wrongly thought that the word 'atlas' refers to the Titan of the same name, whose punishment for fighting against the Olympian gods was to hold the heavens on his shoulders. King Atlas was a mythical ruler of Mauritania, a mathematician and philosopher who supposedly made the first celestial globe. There was one further edition in 1602 before the plates were acquired by Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612). This is the second French edition printed by Hondius, both times adding groups of new maps to the book. Together with the 1613 Latin edition, it is the first to contain the famous double portrait of Mercator and Hondius engraved by Hondius' widow Colletta van den Keere, a successful publisher in her own right who continued the business after her husband's death. The title-page of this copy states "Editio Quarta" (i.e., the fourth Latin edition), but it is in fact a variant of the 1613 French edition, with the Latin title-page but French text (as in Koeman). There are examples of the 1613 French edition at the Scheepvaart Museum, Amsterdam, and the Lilly Library, Bloomington, Indiana, and an example with a Latin title in the University Library, Leiden. Collation as in Koeman II 23A, but title page as in Koeman II 23B; van der Krogt I 1:112; Shirley (2004) T-MER 2g (Latin 1613).

The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly Translated

The Great "She" Bible, the "authorized version" or King James Bible, one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This edition is known as the "She" Bible for the reading "She went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. In this copy he error "Judas" for "Jesus" in Matthew 26:36 is corrected with a pasted-on slip. Fry styles this the "first edition, second issue," though it is more properly the second edition. "The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. Probably the greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but the publication, for some reason or other, was delayed till 1613. . . . Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets" (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. In the preface, Miles Smith, one of the dozens of translators, commented on the importance of the work: "Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most Holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water." "For every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character, imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come, was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals, or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine" (G. M. Trevelyan). Complete copies of this Bible in early bindings are among the most sought-after books in the English language. Printing and the Mind of Man 114. Herbert 319. Folio. Some staining and edge wear. Preliminaries restored. Engraved map of the Holy Land, frayed at edges, supplied. Contemporary calf over oak boards, brass fittings, rebacked, leather worn, binding expertly restored. A very good copy.

Artist: Besler Basilius d ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: d1613 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Upper left corner replaced; - size (in cm): 45,5 x 40; - description: Beautiful yellow, red and violet Iris. 1.edition of the Hortus Eystettensis, printed and issued from the Basilius Besler in Nuremberg 1613. In 2013 is the 400 anniversary of the first edition!; - vita of the artist: Basilius Besler (1561?1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental Hortus Eystettensis. He was curator of the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The bishop was an enthusiastic botanist who derived great pleasure from his garden, which was the only important European botanical garden outside Italy. The work was named Hortus Eystettensis (Garden at Eichstätt). The emphasis in botanicals of previous centuries had been on medicinal and culinary herbs, and these had usually been depicted in a crude manner. The images were often inadequate for identification, and had little claim to being aesthetic. The Hortus Eystettensis changed botanical art overnight. The plates were of garden flowers, herbs and vegetables, exotic plants such as castor-oil and arum lilies. These were depicted near life-size, producing rich detail. The layout was artistically pleasing and quite modern in concept, with the hand-colouring adding greatly to the final effect. The work was first published in 1613 and consisted of 367 copper engravings, with an average of three plants per page, so that a total of 1084 species were depicted. [Attributes: First Edition]

Imprimée à Toulouse, la première édition de cet ouvrage qui s'adressait principalement aux femmes, est une authentique rareté bibliographique.          Lachrimae lachrimarum. or The Distillation of Teares Shede For the untymely Death of The incomparable prince Panaretus. [Bound with:] — Lachrymae Lachrymarum or The Spirit of Teares Distilled The third Edition, with Addition of His Owne.

[London: Printed by Humphrey Lownes, 1612 & 1613] - 2 works in 1 volume, small quarto (179 × 140 mm). 19th-century green straight-grain morocco by Thomson of Edinburgh (with ticket), lately rebacked to style, covers with blind decorative roll border and gilt ornaments inside corners, wide turn-ins gilt all round, gilt edges. Bookplate of Sir Thomas Brooke (1830–1908), of Armitage Bridge House, near Huddersfield. Somewhat closely trimmed, the second work neatly extended with plain paper at fore and lower edge margins to match the page size of the first, printed headlines and signatures in second work shaved. Overall, very good copies of two rare editions. First work: white-line woodcut title with Prince Henry's arms, text within woodcut borders throughout, collates A-D4 (lacks final sig. D4, which has the woodcut border on recto but no text). Second work: white-line woodcut title with royal arms, text within woodcut borders on first 12 leaves, the remainder mostly letterpress save 2 leaves printed with white-line royal arms on black, collates A–B4, C8 (-C8, as issued), D–G4. Both works somewhat eccentrically collated, but textually complete. First appearance of a rare lifetime publication of a poem by John Donne, in the third edition of these funerary verses for Prince Henry, bound together with the second edition. The sombre theme is echoed in the mise-en-page, the text predominately set in deep black woodcut borders with funerary ornaments either side. The promising life of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594–1612), eldest son of James VI of Scotland and I of England, was publically celebrated from the beginning. Nativity poems, banquets, tilts, and masques attended his birth; in his life, he inspired the praise of authors such as George Chapman, John Davies, Michael Drayton, Henry Peacham, and Francis Bacon, who dedicated the second edition of the Essays (1612) to him; and his sudden death from fever (now thought to be typhoid) was mourned in print by Thomas Campion, Joseph Hall, George Herbert, and Walter Ralegh, among others. Sylvester (1563–1618), who had depended on Prince Henry as his chief patron, was particularly effusive in his grief. The first and second editions also include elegies in English, French, Latin, and Italian by the royal tutor, Walter Quin. The third edition is in two parts: the second part has a letterpress divisional title, "Sundry Funeral Elegies." dated 1613, and contains poems by John Donne ("Look to Me, Faith; and look to my Faith, God"), Sir William Cornwallis, Sir Edward Herbert, Sir Henry Goodyere, and Henry Burton. Hayward, in his English Poetry Catalogue, notes that, "with the exception of the Anniuersaries (1611, 1612) and the Elegie. on Prince Henry (printed in J. Sylvester's Lachrymae Lachrymarum, 1613), none of Donne's poems was printed in his lifetime". Both first and second editions are bibliographically complicated – the first edition appearing in various combinations of sheets that "may exist in reimpositions which have not yet been adequately studied" (ESTC). STC designates this variant "Anr. ed"., two of the three copies cited matching this in having A3r line 4 "Cædars" and B3r line 10 "Hee". In this variant the colophon is omitted from D4r (this leaf lacking in this copy), though it retains the frame of woodcuts. STC 23577 & 23578 ; Keynes, Donne, 72 (3rd ed.)

TRATADO DELA ARTILLERÍA Y USO DELLA PLATICADO POR EL CAPITÁN DIEGO UFANO EN LAS GUERRAS DE FLANDES

Ivan Momarte, Bruselas 1613 - Materia: Libro antiguo del siglo XVII. Primera edición. Militar.

1613 - copper engraved plate; overall size c 57 x 45 cm; plate size c 48 x 40 cm. plate # 154. 1st edition. text on verso.- A magnificent print from the ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ [The Garden of Eichstatt], one of the most amazing botanical books of the 17th century ever produced!- Basilius Besler, an apothecary and botanist from Nurnberg, was the curator of the prince bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The bishop took great pride in the gardens of his palace, Willibaldsburg, which rivalled other magnificent gardens in Europe, and asked Besler to compile a codex of all the plants growing there which, initially, was started in 1596 and designed by Joachim Camerius the Younger (1534-1598). It took Besler 16 years to complete the task; unfortunately, the bishop died weeks before the publication of the Hortus. - The garden was sacked by Swedish troops in 1633/4 during the 30 Year War but re-opened in 1998 after reconstruction, following closely the outline of the book. What makes the Hortus so unique is that instead of portraying medicinal or culinary plants, the emphasis was on garden flowers, herbs, vegetables and exotic plants. These were depicted almost life size with great detail, and arranged artistically and pleasing to even the modern eye, with an average of 3 plants on one sheet. This arrangement made up a total of 1084 plants on 367 copper engravings on 368 large folio sized sheets. - First published in 1613, 300 copies were printed which took over four years to sell. Two version were produced of the first edition: one with text on verso of the plant print, intended as reference books; the second without text, on quality paper and lavishly hand-coloured, used as presentation or subscriber copies. In 1640 and 1713, two further editions were published. - The luxury version sold for an exorbitant 500 florins, while the plain, uncoloured copies went for 35 florins each. Besler could finally purchase a comfortable home in a fashionable part of Nürnberg at a price of 2 500 florins – five coloured copies' worth of ‘Hortus Eystettensis'!- de Belder 23, 24, 25; Nissen 158- Paper cream coloured; light horizontal centre crease (due to drying on a line); additional smaller printer’s creases; slight text off-set; o/w vg cond.
