         1601 English Rheims-Bishops' New Testament

      - The text of the New Testament of Jesus Christ, translated out of the vulgar Latine by the Papist. at Rhemes. Whereunto is added the translation out of the original Greeke, commonly used in the Church of England, with a confutation of all such arguments, glosses, and annotations, as conteine manifest impietie, or heresie. against the Catholic Church of God. (ed.) by W. Fulke. Londini: Impensis G.B., 1601. Folio. When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English (first edition, 1582), the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged, other intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke, of Pembroke College, Cambridge, was among those offended, outraged, and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach, however - which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT (the then accepted version of the Church of England), supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences. As Darlow and moule comment, "by printing the Rheims Testament in full, side by side with the Bishops' version, (Fulke) secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained, and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version, and thus passed into the language" (Great Books and Book Collectors, p. 108). This is the second edition of the Rheims - Bishops' version of the New Testament, and thus the second printing of the Rheims in England. all early editions of the Rheims NT are important and most are scarce. 2nd Fulk Edition Complete Copy.          Des fortifications et Artifices, Architecture et Perspective.

1601. PERRET, Jacques. Des Fortifications et Artifices, Architecture et Perspective. 11 ff text, all but the last printed on recto only. Engraved title and 22 double-spread engraved plates by Thomas de Leu. Folio, 440 x 285 mm, bound in contemporary full vellum preserved in a maroon half morocco folding box. [Paris, 1620]. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Edition of this visionary architectural work from the time of Henri IV. The text and original drawings for the plates are the work of Jacques Perret, Savoyard engineer and architect. The engraved title depicts a classical portal crowned by an equestrian portrait of Henry IV; at the foot of the title appears a bird's eye view of the city of Paris and the following legend: "Par le grand Roy Henri IIII. Le vingt deuxieme de Mars 1594." Perret's remarkable book is comprised of plates and text dealing with imaginary fortifications and city plans. The most extraordinary aspect of the engravings centers on the surreal quality of the fortifications and the visionary designs of the buildings, including one thirteen-story edifice, complete with rooftop sculptures, urns and fountains, which prefigures the modern urban skyscraper. The First Edition, published 1601, had considerably more text, however the same illustrations. Both are uncommon. Title page and first text leaf with marginal repair at the bottom, some very light staining not effecting the illustrations, vellum with staining and early repairs. Still a very nice, unsophisticated, wide margined copy. Cockle 799. Millard, French 139 (First Edition). Berlin Katalog 2368. Not in Fowler, Guilmard.

Par I.D.L. [i.e Jean de Moncy]. A La Haye, Chez la Veuve de Hillebrand van VVovv [i.e. Wouw], lc.I .c.xlv [i.e. 1614]. (2), [7-], 192 p.

[Attributes: First Edition]

Ad Laudem et Gloriam Sanctissime Trinitatis, incipit prima pars [-secunda] Ritum Sacri Ordinis Carthusiensis. Continensa prima dominica adventus.

1601 - Magnificent pair of Antiphonals for the Use of the Carthusian Order of Spain. 1601. [Spain]. Two volumes, folio (500 x 360 mm). 202 ff.; 145 ff. Both volumes are housed in impressive not-uniform calf bindings, both contemporary, the first in plateresque style, tooled in blind with corner and center-pieces of brass (a few renewed), and the second in a plain more simply-tooled calf, decorated with the same brass clasps as the first; some pieces renewed, as well as clasps, else very good. Excellent condition overall, some darkening or oxidation to a few leaves as common, else in wonderful estate of preservation; second title with a restored text away from text and traces of glue on gutter. 30,000 $ A truly impressive, large, and unusual pair of Antiphonals for the use of the Ordo Cartusiensis (Carthusians) of Spain; both are entirely on vellum, feature decorated titles pages and large initials in blue and red, and retain their original bindings. As stated above, antiphonals for the use of the Carthusians are rare; there were far fewer convents and monasteries of the Order in Spain than other Orders as the Benedictines for example. The Carthusian Order, founded by Saint Brune in the 11th century in the Alps, is contemplative and eremitical in its nature, where the monks habit cells separated from each other, engaging in prayer, meditation, and some sort of manual labor. The decoration is typically Spanish, large initials in red and blue, and marginal decoration in purple accompanying some of the initials; the initials are finely executed, and are inhabited by mostly floral patterns, putti, and animals. The first title is particularly beautiful, enclosed in a purple frame of remarkably detail. Both volumes end with a manuscript note “Correctum”, attesting the volumes had been checked for errors and censored. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Finely hand-drawn & colored map on rice paper of a portion of the "golden" Sado Island, 560 x 1350 mm., depicting the town of Aikawa and its port and the surrounding mines. Minor worming but in excellent condition with fresh colors of green, orange, yellow, red, and blue

[Japan: n.d. but probably 18th century]. Gold, silver, and copper mining on Sado Island, just off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, had its beginnings in ancient times. With the discovery in 1601 of the rich Aikawa gold and silver mine, Sado experienced an economic boom. The Edo shogunate assembled miners and slave laborers (mostly the homeless) from throughout Japan and sent them to Sado to exploit the Aikawa mine and three other nearby mines. It soon became the largest gold and silver mining site in Japan, attracting a population of more than 50,000 and it, to a very large degree, financed the Edo shogunate for several hundred years. A series of unique mining, smelting, and minting technologies developed at Sado were disseminated to other mines throughout Japan. Today, the Sado complex of mines is on the "Tentative List" of Unesco World Heritage Sites (and much of our description is derived from the detailed article prepared for submission to Unesco). This fine map depicts the mountain town of Aikawa and its nearby port city with the government warehouses for gold, silver, and copper; the entrances to the fives mines (red dots); local rivers (especially "Muddy River") and main thoroughfares; local streets ("Miso Street," "Timber Street," "Paper Street," "Barber Street," etc.); the shipyard; gates to the mining areas; shrines and temples; storage areas for grain and rice; water removal systems for the mines; etc. The artist of this map has provided a color "key" to the features of the island and its mining activities: red dots are the entrances to the mines, orange for the mining areas, yellow for urban areas and refining works, blue for water, and brown for roads.

Fretum Magellanicum, und dessen Eigentliche Beschreibung

Attractive map of the Strait; it illustrates the voyages of Sebald de Weert and mostly of Oliver van Noort to South America, through the Strait of Magellan after stopping by the Patagonia and Brazil. The map is splendidly embellished with renderings of natives and penguins; the bottom contains a cartouche marking some points in the map. Versions of it were published in part IX of De Bry's Great Voyages and later in 1655 in the Newe Welt und Americanishe Historien. This map belongs to the earlier editions.

Methodus curandorum omnium morborum corporis humani
