Dieser Totentanz-Zyklus ist eines der Wahrzeichen Luzerns, das Werk Caspar Meglingers (1595-1670), von 1626 bis 1635 gemalt, und zwar ursprünglich 67 Bilder. Es existieren heute noch 56, jedoch nur 45 davon wurden (damals 1867) in der Mühlebrücke aufgehängt. Über Jahrhunderte wurden die Totentanz-Bilder immer wieder restauriert. Die unter den Tafeln angebrachten Sinnsprüche sind eine katholische Umformung derjenigen des Pfarrers Müller von Thalwil, die dieser für den von J. R. Meyer gemalten Zürcher-Totentanz dichtete."Meglingers Bedeutung liegt in seiner außerordentlichen szenischen Kompositionsgabe und gewandten Porträtkunst auch in der weichen Behandlung des nackten und in seiner Auffassung landschaftlicher Reize. This spectacular town plan was published by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne, in their Atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum, circa 1595. The image area measures 35 x 43.6 cm [13¾" x 17¼"] on a double-folio sheet, with generous margins on all sides. The title is contained with a decorative cartouche: Namurcum, Elegantissima Ad Mosae Flume Civitas, and three figures are drawn in the foreground. Original hand color. There's a full-page of Latin text on the reverse side, with a large initial cap. Condition: This map is in very good condition, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. Durchgehend griechisch-lateinischer Text beider Reden in der berühmten Auseinandersetzung zwischen Demosthenes und Aischines, die der erstere für sich entschied, obwohl rein juristisch Aischines vermutlich recht hatte. Der Orator Ktesiphon hatte vorgeschlagen, dass Athen Demosthenes mit einer Krone ehren solle für seinen Einsatz gegen Alexander. Aeschines verklagte Ktesiphon in verschiedenen Punkten, die aufzeigen sollten, dass es dem Gesetz widerspreche, wenn zu dem gepanten Zeitpunkt und in der vorgeschlagenen Form die Krone verliehen würde. Mit seiner wohl bekanntesten und rhetorisch wirkungsvollsten Rede konnte sich Demosthenes jedoch durchsetzen. "- Titel mit kleinen alten Vermerken, nur vereinzelt leicht fleckig, meist recht sauber. Die ursprünglich vorhandenen Schließbänder wurden abgetrennt. Der vor langer Zeit erneuerte Rückenbezug wellig und brüchig, mit kleinen Abplatzungen und altem handgeschriebenen Rückentitel. Kleine Fehlstelle im Bezug des Rückdeckels. Innengelenke etwas brüchig und mit Wurmspuren. Wohlerhaltener Buchblock, etwas gebräunt aber wenig fleckig. Vereinzelt wenige Anstreichungen mit Farbstift. Insgesamt in gutem Zustand.

Pierre de La Primaudaye (1546-1619), scrittore francese originario di una famiglia protestante angevina, fu al servizio di Enrico III ed Enrico IV come consigliere. L'opera è concepita in forma di dialogo (diciotto giornate) fra quattro giovani reduci dagli scontri e dalle persecuzioni religiose che caratterizzarono la Francia del tempo. Adottarono nomi fittizi di origine ebraica: Aser (felicità), Amana (verità), Aram (sublimità) e Achitob (bontà). I giovani, istruiti da un vecchio erudito che per anni servì la Corona, furono stimolati a ragionare su felicità umana, governo dei regni, famiglia, matrimonio, istruzione dei figli, arte della guerra, economia, legge, sovranità, tirannide, vizi umani, fede, tolleranza religiosa, ecc. L'Autore sostiene di essere stato testimone oculare dei dialoghi e di aver deciso di pubblicarli integralmente allo scopo di educare la gioventù in Francia, corrotta e male istruita. Prima traduzione italiana dedicata dal traduttore Alessandro Raveri a Ferdinando de' Medici. Édition originale de la traduction du grec au latin des oeuvres d'Hippocrate par Anuce Foes. Cette traduction est resté la référence pendant 250 ans, jusqu'à son remplacement par l'édition française de Littré [1839 à 1861]. Les oeuvres d'Hippocrate sont en réalité un ensemble d'une soixantaine d'écrits, qui furent composés entre 450 et 350 avant J.-C; Ils constituent notre principale source d'information sur la médecine grècque avant l'époque d'Alexandrie. C'est au cours du seizième siècle que les érudits ont progressivement donné naissance à un corpus hippocratique en latin qui a eu cours jusqu'à son remplacement par l'édition française de Littré [1839 à 1861]. Les éditions marquantes ayant permis cet aboutissement sont les éditions princeps en latin (1525 à Rome) puis en grec (1526, Alde), qui permirent la découverte de manuscrits jusque là pratiquement inconnus. Vinrent ensuite les éditions baloises de 1538 et 1546 (Froben) qui menèrent à bien la correction systématique des éditions princeps. Enfin, en 1595, le médecin de Metz Anuce Foes (1528-1595) fait imprimer notre édition bilingue grec/ latin "exacte et complète des oeuvres d'Hippocrate, oeuvres aussi avidement désirées, que vainement attendues depuis longtemps. During the sixteenth century, scholars have gradually given rise to the Hippocratic Corpus in Latin, which was current until its replacement by the French edition of Littre [1839-1861]. The editions that enabled this achievement are the first editions in Latin (1525 in Rome) and Greek (1526, Aldus), which led to the discovery of manuscripts hitherto virtually unknown. Then came the Basel editions of 1538 and 1546 (Froben) that led to the systematic correction of many first editions. Finally, in 1595, the doctor of Metz Anuce Foes (1528-1595) printed this important bilingual edition that became the reference until the Littré works 250 years later. Die Beschreibungen (eine Art Protokolle) werden von Stichen erläutert und teilweise werden auch die zugehörigen Gesänge in Quadraturnotation abgedruckt. Nur der erste Teil (Pars Prima) von ursprünglich insgesamt drei Teilen für das Jahr 1595 ist vorhanden. Es fehlen die ersten Blätter: Das Titelblatt mit Frontispiz sowie die Vorworte des M. Vestrius Barbianus sind nicht vorhanden, aber als Kopie beigelegt. Zum Teil von geringfügigen Wasserschäden betroffene Seiten, einige wenige, stärker betroffene, hinterlegt und in alter Hand ergänzt. Nouvelle édition de la version de Lucrèce donnée par Hubert von Giffen (Obertus Giphanius ou Giffanius ou Gifanius, 1534-1604), qui était originellement parue en 1566 à l'adresse d'Anvers. Degeorges, p. 145 (pour l'édition de 1566). L'ouvrage est couvert d'une magnifique reliure à décors floraux dans la manière de Clovis Eve (1565-1635, actif de 1584 à 1634). Comme on a été d'une très grande générosité dans l'attribution à ce relieur notamment dans les décors dit "à la fanfare", il importe de se montrer prudent, mais la finesse de l'exécution semble bien dans sa manière, en tout cas de son atelier. Stach zunächst viel nach Vorlagen von Hendrick Goltzius. Seine oft allegorisch aufgefassten Motive sind biblischer sowie mythologischer Herkunft. Hendrick Goltzius (1558 Bracht / Brüggen - 1616/17 Haarlem). Niederländischer Maler und Kupferstecher, Hauptmeister des Manierismus. Schüler von Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert und Philipp Galle. Reiste ab 1590 mehrere Jahre durch Italien und Deutschland. Machte sich um die Weiterentwicklung des Kupferstichs verdient, indem er den Stich als solchen außerordentlich variabel behandelte - sogenannter Taille-Stich - und sowohl in Dynamik als auch Stärke variierte. Damit hat er die Kupferstichtechnik insgesamt zu einer völlig neuartigen Modellierfähigkeit geführt. Goltzius drohte zwar mit seinen technisch teilweise extrem forcierten Blättern ins übermäßig Artifizielle abzugleiten, wurde jedoch bereits zu Lebzeiten zu Recht als brillanter Stecher gefeiert.       - Antique print, titled: 'Frisia Orientalis.' - Map of East Frisia comes from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. It is based on the manuscript map by Jon Bloemmaerts or Johannes Florianus and depicts the important shipping center of Emden and the Watten Islands. An inset shows the region inundated by the great flood on Christmas Day, 1277, surrounded by an elaborate strapwork cartouche. The map is finely engraved with a stippled sea and a distance scale surmounted by male and female figures displaying the costumes of the region. Dutch text on verso. Copperplate engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Ref: Van den Broecke #83.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Abraham Ortelius' after an anonymous artist. Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Condition: Good, given age. Paper wrinkled near middle fold. Small tear in image; backed and only visible on verso. Tiny tear bottom middle fold, not affecting image. Original middle fold as issued.
