         Extraits des lettres, actes, et mémoires envoiés, ou reçeus par Monsieur le Comte d'Avaux, plénipotentiaire ambassadeur de France aux conférences pour la paix de Westphalie, qui se sont trouvés dans le cabinet de Monseigneur de Mesmes président à mortier, ou dans la bibliothèque de feu Mr. Colbert.

      S.l.n.d., - fort vol. in-folio, [612] pp. n. ch., couvertes d'une écriture fine et très lisible (environ 40 lignes par page), [7] ff. vierges, vélin rigide, tranches mouchetées de rouge, titre manuscrit au dos (reliure de l'époque). Vélin un peu taché, mais bon exemplaire. Très important registre de correspondances concernant la période la plus importante de la vie de Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux (1595-1650). Il a été collationné à partir des pièces conservées dans la bibliothèque de son neveu Jean-Jacques de Mesmes (1640-88) et dans le cabinet de Colbert, qui a dû les hériter de Mazarin. C'est dès 1627 que commença la carrière diplomatique du jeune maître des requêtes avec une ambassade extraordinaire à Venise, mais c'est le 20 septembre 1643 qu'il fut envoyé pour la seconde fois à La Haye, pour négocier la paix générale, dont l'aboutissement sera les Traités dits de Westphalie en 1648, en compagnie d'Abel Servien et du duc de Longueville. Notre recueil commence précisément avec l'année 1643 et quasiment avec l'insertion de ces lettres de mission. Il se termine un peu après la disgrâce de l'ambassadeur, rappelé par Mazarin le 13 mars 1648 et exilé dans ses terres, à la suite de son interminable et pénible rivalité avec Abel Servien, qui avait fini par envenimer tant la mission elle-même que les rapports avec les puissances étrangères et la position de Mazarin. Longueville ayant été également rappelé, Abel Servien demeura seul à négocier avec l'Empereur, les pourparlers avec l'Espagne ayant été rompus à cette date. La répartition des pièces se fait ensuite de la façon suivante : 1. Année 1643 : pp. 1-8. 2. Année 1644 : pp. 9-70. 3. Année 1645 : pp. 71-165. 4. Année 1646 : pp. 166-316. 5. Année 1647 : pp. 317-504. 6. Année 1648 : pp. 505-612. Il est important de noter que ce registre est minimal, c'est-à-dire qu'il ne reproduit pas les pièces citées dans leur intégralité, mais se contente d'en résumer le contenu (exemple : "Le 25 de février 1647. Mémoire de Monsieur d'Avaux. Il envoie une copie plus correcte du traité des Suédois. Proposition de M. de Traum pour Me la Landgrave : difficultés entre les Catholiques et les Protestants, et sur l'affaire Palatine. Il séjourne encore quelque temps à Osnabrug." En dépit de cela, et du fait qu'il existe des publications partielles des négociations d'Avaux en Westphalie (Mémoires de Monsieur D. touchant les négociations du Traité de paix fait à Munster en l'année 1648, Paris, 1674 - Mémoires et négociations secrètes de la cour de France touchant la paix de Munster, contenant les lettres. et avis secrets envoyés de la part du roi, de S. É. le cardinal Mazarin et de M. le comte de Brienne, aux plénipotentiaires de France à Munster, afin de leur servir d'instruction pour la paix générale, avec les dépêches et les réponses des plénipotentiaires, Amsterdam, 1710), ce manuscrit demeure un instrument de premier plan pour la connaissance de la diplomatie de Mazarin.

(titre, dédicace, préface, vie de Lucrèce, table des chapitres), 486 pp., texte entièrement réglé, maroquin vieux-rouge, dos lisse et plats ornés d'un riche décor de filets, rinceaux, branchages et semis de fleurs dorés, avec cartouche central vierge, simple filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Petits trous de vers stoppés, cachet de la bibliothèque du séminaire de Toulouse et ex-libris manuscrit cu collége des Jésuites d'Auch. Nouvelle édition de la version de Lucrèce donnée par Hubert von Giffen (Obertus Giphanius ou Giffanius ou Gifanius, 1534-1604), qui était originellement parue en 1566 à l'adresse d'Anvers. Degeorges, p. 145 (pour l'édition de 1566). L'ouvrage est couvert d'une magnifique reliure à décors floraux dans la manière de Clovis Eve (1565-1635, actif de 1584 à 1634). Comme on a été d'une très grande générosité dans l'attribution à ce relieur notamment dans les décors dit "à la fanfare", il importe de se montrer prudent, mais la finesse de l'exécution semble bien dans sa manière, en tout cas de son atelier. Arbeitete daran anschließend für einige Zeit eng mit Hendrick Goltzius und Jacques de Gheyn d.J. zusammen. Ließ sich um 1595 in Assendelft nieder. Stach zunächst viel nach Vorlagen von Hendrick Goltzius. Seine oft allegorisch aufgefassten Motive sind biblischer sowie mythologischer Herkunft. Hendrick Goltzius (1558 Bracht / Brüggen - 1616/17 Haarlem). Niederländischer Maler und Kupferstecher, Hauptmeister des Manierismus. Schüler von Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert und Philipp Galle. Reiste ab 1590 mehrere Jahre durch Italien und Deutschland. Machte sich um die Weiterentwicklung des Kupferstichs verdient, indem er den Stich als solchen außerordentlich variabel behandelte - sogenannter Taille-Stich - und sowohl in Dynamik als auch Stärke variierte. Damit hat er die Kupferstichtechnik insgesamt zu einer völlig neuartigen Modellierfähigkeit geführt. Goltzius drohte zwar mit seinen technisch teilweise extrem forcierten Blättern ins übermäßig Artifizielle abzugleiten, wurde jedoch bereits zu Lebzeiten zu Recht als brillanter Stecher gefeiert.       - Antique print, titled: 'Frisia Orientalis.' - Map of East Frisia comes from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. It is based on the manuscript map by Jon Bloemmaerts or Johannes Florianus and depicts the important shipping center of Emden and the Watten Islands. An inset shows the region inundated by the great flood on Christmas Day, 1277, surrounded by an elaborate strapwork cartouche. The map is finely engraved with a stippled sea and a distance scale surmounted by male and female figures displaying the costumes of the region. Dutch text on verso. Copperplate engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Ref: Van den Broecke #83.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Abraham Ortelius' after an anonymous artist. Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Condition: Good, given age. Paper wrinkled near middle fold. Small tear in image; backed and only visible on verso. Tiny tear bottom middle fold, not affecting image. Original middle fold as issued. Le texte est divisé en vingt chapitres : maladies d'amour, grossesses simulées, possessions diaboliques, syphilis cachées, crachement de sang simulé, tumeurs feintes, impuissance apparente, virginités simulées, ulcères factices, envoûtements, empoisonnements, etc. Il s'agit d'un livre peu commun, dont le recensement Edit-16 (ICCU) ne localise que quatre exemplaires dans les bibliothèques publiques italiennes. Antica firma di possesso al frontespizio. Restauro con integrazione di pergamena alle estremità dei piatti, sporadici e trascurabili aloni. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Pierre de La Primaudaye (1546-1619), scrittore francese originario di una famiglia protestante angevina, fu al servizio di Enrico III ed Enrico IV come consigliere. L'opera è concepita in forma di dialogo (diciotto giornate) fra quattro giovani reduci dagli scontri e dalle persecuzioni religiose che caratterizzarono la Francia del tempo. Adottarono nomi fittizi di origine ebraica: Aser (felicità), Amana (verità), Aram (sublimità) e Achitob (bontà). I giovani, istruiti da un vecchio erudito che per anni servì la Corona, furono stimolati a ragionare su felicità umana, governo dei regni, famiglia, matrimonio, istruzione dei figli, arte della guerra, economia, legge, sovranità, tirannide, vizi umani, fede, tolleranza religiosa, ecc. L'Autore sostiene di essere stato testimone oculare dei dialoghi e di aver deciso di pubblicarli integralmente allo scopo di educare la gioventù in Francia, corrotta e male istruita. Prima traduzione italiana dedicata dal traduttore Alessandro Raveri a Ferdinando de' Medici. With occasional woodcut vignettes. Complete with index, though pages 1099-1110 are misbound. In later dark full calf, c. 1750, skilfully re-backed with original spine leather pasted over. Raised bands and gilt titles to red label on spine. All edges red. Title page browned; first leaves delicate, with some repair to edges of first leaf following title page, and the final leaf of the index. Lacking blanks at beginning and end. Very good overall. Plutarch's 'Lives' were first published in a French translation from the original Greek by Jacques Amyot in 1559. Thomas North then published his first collection of Lives in English, translated from Amyot's French, in 1579. This second edition followed in 1595 with some newly translated lives, and a third edition with further translations appeared finally in 1603. Shakespeare, among others, drew inspiration directly from this influential translation, with whole sections copied almost verbatim in 'Antony and Cleopatra'.

Johannes Holstenius (1624-85) was the son of the learned headmaster at the Västerås gymnasium, Eric Holstenius. The son studied in Uppsala, performed an oration on the science of mining in 1646 and eventually returned home to become a teacher at above-mentioned school. El tratadito retórico del jesuita Juan de Santiago "o Juan de Jacobo" (Toledo, 1532-Marchena, 1604), es una obra muy rara. Tanto Escudero y Perosso como Palau la citan por el ejemplar conservado en Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, al que cabe sumar tan solo otros tres ejemplares en bibliotecas españolas recogidos en el Catalogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español (CCPB000022911-3), y un quinto más, mútilo de portada y la hoja de erratas, custodiado en la biblioteca de la Universidad de Sevilla. Su obra, escrita a la zaga de la del padre Cripriano Suárez (S. J.), De arte rhetorica libri tres (Coimbra, 1562), que gozó de numerosas ediciones a lo largo del Quinientos convirtiéndose en el manual más utilizado por los colegios de la Compañía, muestra cierto conservadurismo, con un ramismo libre influenciado en buena medida por el Institutionum Rethoricarum (Lovaina, 1554) de Fadrique Furió Ceriol, al que no cita, y por la producción gramatical valenciano Pedro Juan Núñez. Jahrhunderts, nicht nur in Ausgburg, wertvoll durch die Behandlung der Augsburgischen Altertümer, zahlreiche lateinische und deutsche Gedichte, sowie eine große Zahl vortrefflicher. Holzschnitte" (Lentner). - Der erste Teil enthält die deutsche Übersetzung der 1594 in Latein erschienen Chronik Welsers "Rerum Augustanarum. libri octo". Teil 2 und 3 bestehen aus der deutschen Ausgabe von Gassers "Annales civitatis Augsburgensis", deren Drucklegung 1593 vom Rat der Stadt Augsburg zunächst verhindert worden war (vgl. NDB 6, 79 f. bzw. ADB 8, 396 f.). Als Druckort ist deshalb Basel angegeben. Der vierte Teil mit dem Titel "Antiqua monumenta" ist wiederum von Welser und auch als separater Druck erschienen. "Diese deutschsprachige Ausgabe brachte Welser allerdings an den Rand eines Eintrags in den Index der katholischen Kirche: Denn der einflussreiche italienische Jesuit Antonio Possevino warnte vor der Lektüre der Stadtgeschichte Welsers in seinem "Apparatus ad omnium gentium historicam" von 1597 wegen der protestantischen Haltung der angefügten Gasser-Chronik" (M. U. Ferber: "Scio multos te amicos habere". Documenta Augustana, Bd. 19, S. 47). - Vollständiges Exemplar, mit der häufig fehlenden Karte und den oft fehlenden 2 n.n. Blättern vor Teil 2 sowie den 4 n.n. Bll. (letztes w.) vor Teil 3, die beim größten Teil der Auflage weggelassen wurden, um Gasser als Autor nicht in Erscheinung treten zu lassen. Lediglich die weißen Blätter am Ende von Teil 2 und 3 wurden vor der Bindung entfernt. - Einband etwas fleckig bzw. abgegriffen, mit einzelnen Reib-/Stoßstellen. Die ursprünglich vorhandenen Schließbänder wurden abgetrennt. Der vor langer Zeit erneuerte Rückenbezug wellig und brüchig, mit kleinen Abplatzungen und altem handgeschriebenen Rückentitel. Kleine Fehlstelle im Bezug des Rückdeckels. Innengelenke etwas brüchig und mit Wurmspuren. Wohlerhaltener Buchblock, etwas gebräunt aber wenig fleckig. Vereinzelt wenige Anstreichungen mit Farbstift.       1595 - Bulino, fine XVI secolo. Da un disegno di Agostino Carracci. Magnifica prova, ricca di toni, impressa su carta vergata coeva, rifilata al rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Il soggetto è già interpretato da Francesco Brizio nel 1595; e del tema esistono diversi disegni preparatori, nessuno dei quali sembra essere l’originale del Carracci. Questa incisione è nello stesso verso rispetto al disegno preparatorio e pertanto potrebbe essere stata realizzato guardando la stampa del Brizio. Non descritta nei repertori. The subject is already played by Francesco Brizio in 1595, and the theme there are several preparatory drawings, none of which seems to be the original of the Carracci. This work is in the same direction with respect to the preparatory drawing and therefore may have been made by looking at the release of Brizio. Not described in the repertories.       - In Parigi, appresso Abel L'Angelieri nella prima colonna del Palazzo, MDLCXV [ma MDXCV: 1595], in-12, bella leg. ottocentesca in pieno marocchino a grana lunga, dorso con cornici a filetto e titolo in oro, piatti riquadrati da filetti con piccolo monogramma coronato impresso al centro (sempre in oro), tagli dorati, carte [13], 361 [ma: 465], [2], le carte a11 e a12 bianche. Non è stata legata l'ultima c. che era bianca. Numerosi errori di cartulazione. Rispetto alla collazione presente in ICCU questo esemplare è dotato d'un altro frontespizio fuori fascicolatura, legato prima del frontespizio posto al recto di carta a1 e recante: Di Gerusalemme conquistata del Sig. Torquato Tasso. Libri XXIIII. In Parigi appresso Abel L'Angelier, nella prima colonna di Palazzo, MMXCV [sic]. Questo secondo frontespizio reca anche un piccolo ritratto del Tasso inciso in rame. Edizione rarissima, a cura di Angelo Ingegneri, il cui nome figura nella prefazione, condannata e soppressa con decreto del Parlamento di Parigi del 1 settembre 1595, a riguardo di alcuni versi dal canto XX. Il ns. esemplare è corredato delle due varianti del frontespizio che caratterizzano l'edizione. Gamba 964: "Assai rara". Raccolta Tassiana n. 1041. Bandet med några brunfläckar samt många små blå bläckstänk. Försättsblad urrivet. Enstaka lagerfläckar och några bläckfläckar. Första arbetets titelblad med litet hål, Lång reva i texten på s. (3-4), reva i yttermarginalen på s. 9-10, ett fåtal understrykningar och marginalanteckningar t.ex. på s. 164-65 och 319 samt föremål i pappersmassan i yttermarginalen på s. 225-26. Det andra arbetet något mer fläckigt och med fler understrykningar och anteckningar, framför allt i början. En ljus fuktfläck i övre marginalen från s. 497 till slutet. Sista registerarket nästan loss i ryggen. Tre sidor gamla latinska anteckningar på eftersättsbladen. Frampärmens insida med latinsk anteckning från 1800-talets första hälft. Med Johannes Holstenius och [J. W.] Liliestråles namnteckningar, den förstnämnda daterad den 16 april 1643, samt Wilhelm Malms överstrukna namnteckning från den 6 mars 1835, Wilhelm Gynthers namnteckning daterad den 18 december 1841 och J. Det första arbetet har mycket dekorativa kartor. Det andra arbetet inkluderar geografiska verk och resor av bland andra Martin Crusius, Matthias Dresser (Etiopien), Jan Ma ecki (Preussen) och Paul Oderborn (Ryssland). Johannes Holstenius (1624-85) var son till den lärda rektorn vid gymnasiet i Västerås Eric Holstenius, studerade i Uppsala, höll en oration över bergsväsendet i Västmanland 1646 och anställdes 1659 vid gymnasiet i Västerås samt slutade sina dagar som kyrkoherde i Folkärna.

Mit 1 ganzseitigen Ansicht der Klosteranlage, die kleinen Holzschnitte zeigen Reliquiengefäße, Kruzifixe, Monstranzen etc. - Der interessante Einband etwas angestaubt. Titelblatt gebräunt und im Falz etwas fleckig. Die Falttafel mit kl. Hinterlegung.

      Anversa 1595 - Carta geografica del basso Lazio tratta dal Parergon, atlante storico di Ortelius. Dal punto di vista cartografico la carta deriva da Ignazio Danti, che inviò delle informazioni ad Ortelius nel 1592. Inserito nel cartiglio in basso a sinistra il particolare del Monte Circeo, da disegno di Angelo Breventano. Questo esemplare è tratto dall'edizione latina del Parergon, del 1608/1612. Testo latino al verso. Sulla destra, la notizia del priviegio di stampa decennale. La mappa è dedicata a Marco Velsero, eminente archeologo, filologo e storico di Augusta. Incisione su rame, bella coloritura a mano, in ottime condizioni.         Sacra Famiglia

      Acquaforte, circa 1595, priva della firma dell'artista. Prova del raro primo stato di due, avanti l'aggiunta nel margine bianco della scritta "Guido Reni fecit". Magnifica impressione, nitida e contrastata, impressa su carta vergata coeva, con margini, in eccellente stato di conservazione. Il Reni affronta questo soggetto in maniera molto simile per tre volte. Molto difficile ordinare cronologicamente le opere, a causa della mancanza di date e di documenti relativi. Tuttavia la notevole influenza del Parmigianino in questo lavoro e l'affinità stilistica con lo Stemma della famiglia Sforza (Bartsch 23) lascia presupporre che sia il più antico dei tre, quindi databile all'ultimo decennio del XVI secolo. Nella ripetizione di questo soggetto (Bartsch 10 & 11), esistono sostanziali differenze stilistiche nella maniera di incidere. Etching, circa 1595, without signature. Guido Reni translate this subject, in the same way, three times. Very difficult to sort chronologically the works, due to lack of dates and related documents. However, the considerable influence of Parmigianino in this work and the stylistic affinity with the coat of arms of the Sforza family (Bartsch 23) suggests that it is the oldest of the three, so datable to the last decade of the sixteenth century. In the repetition of this subject (Bartsch 10 & 11), there are substantial differences in the manner of stylistic influence. Perfect example. Bartsch 9, TIB 004 I/II, Bertelà 858.
