appresso Bernardo Giunti, 1592. Cm. 19,5, pp. (8) 286 (2). Bel marchio tip. al frontespizio, graziose testatine e capilettera xil. Testo in corsivo. Legatura antica in piena perg. rigida; dorso a 4 sottili nervi e titoli in oro su tass. in marocchino. Cfr. Iccu; Gamba, 1241; Camerini, Annali Giunti, II, 482..

1592 PLATO Philosophy Politics Socrates War Dialogues Alcibiades Ficino

[Genevae] : apud Iacobum Stoer, 1592. - 1592 PLATO Philosophy Politics Socrates War Dialogues Alcibiades Ficino “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” ― Plato A rare, late-16th-century printing of the works of Plato edited and translated by Marsilio Ficino. His translation is notable as being the first translation into Latin of the complete works of Plato. This volume from the 1592 edition features many of the most popular and famous Platonic works including the First and Second Alcibiades, Dialogues of Protagoras, Philebus, Sophist, Euthyphro, Parmenides, Charmides, Laches, Hipparchus, and Hippas. These Socratic dialogues discuss philosophy and seek to answer ‘what if’ questions. The Alcibiades are particularly important as the discussion between Socrates and Plato focuses on politics of war and peace.          Autograph document signed and dated February 23, 1591 attesting to a tenor's service to a Milanese chapel

1 page. Folio. Document executed in an attractive late 16th century hand certifying that one Giovanni Battista Rossoni di Caravagio served as a tenor at a chapel in Milan. Slightly worn and soiled; browned at edges; creased at central fold; one small hole not affecting text. Valdessio describes himself in the present document as a "maestro di castello" in Milan, the ensemble attached to the Spanish garrison. We have been unable to locate any additional biographical information on Valdessio. Rossoni appears as having moved to the Duomo's choir in 1592 (see printed-sacred-music.org/manuscripts/00000000002914); he is gone from the lists by 1600, thus he would have been at the Castle from 1587-91 and the Duomo thereafter, most probably until his death. We would like to thank Professor Robert L. Kendrick of the University of Chicago for his kind assistance in the cataloguing of this item.

In Venetia, appresso Bernardo Giunti , 1592.

In Venetia, appresso Bernardo Giunti 1592 - Cm. 19,5, pp. (8) 286 (2). Bel marchio tip. al frontespizio, graziose testatine e capilettera xil. Testo in corsivo. Legatura antica in piena perg. rigida; dorso a 4 sottili nervi e titoli in oro su tass. in marocchino. All'illustrissima, & eccellentiss. Signora donna Isabella de Medici Orsina duchessa di Bracciano.

appresso Giovanni Griffio, in Venetia (Venezia) 1592 - 8vo (150x100 mm), contemporary stiff vellum, pp. [16], 280; editorial woodcut device at title-page; xylographic initials. Text printed in italic type; printed marginal references in small roman type. Dedication to Isabella de' Medici Orsina, Duchess of Bracciano. Very scarce edition of the refined and amusing Bargagli's small masterpiece (first published in 1572 in Siena) on the intriguing or funny games played in the Tuscany summer evenings of the Renaissance period. The "vegghie sanesi" («Sienese evenings») were a renowned part of the activities of the club of Accademia degli Intronati (one of the first literary and cultural clubs that were formed in Italy; Bargagli being a member), in which cultured word-games were a focus for intriguing interchange between men and women. 137 games and their variants are described, called for wit, verbal skill, and variety of response and enigmas. "Materiale Intronato" is the pseudonym for Girolamo Bargagli (1537-1586), see Melzi, Dizionario di opere anonime e pseudonime, II, p. 169. A certain amount of intellectual agility would also be required to follow the text, with its long sentences separated by occasional full stops (periods). George Irving Dale in his "Games and Social Pastimes in the Spanish Drama of the Golden Age" (Hispanic Review, 1940) calls attention to the number of games that Bargagli describes, their appearance in Spanish drama and elsewhere, observing that "the first game in Bargagli's book of games is that of cross purposes or themes, "del proposito," in which each player whispers something to his neighbor, who in turn whispers an answer and another question until each player has had a turn; after which the questions and answers are repeated aloud for the pleasure of the company. Bargagli mentions that the game is described in Ariosto's Orlando Furioso and cites the passage. This game was utilized by Cervantes in his Galatea. The dramatists do not seem to have made any use of it." Prov.: Handwritten ownership inscription at title-page. References: IT\ICCU\UBOE\000146. CNCE, 1386. OCLC, 4486284.
