      1591 - Rome: Hendrik van Schoel, 1602. Three sheets conjoined, total 420 x 880mm, good margins. Repaired tear, minor repairs to binding folds, wide margins An extremely rare view of the Capitol ( Campidoglio ) of classical Rome, with little regard for perspective, first published in Salamanca's 'Speculum Romanæ Magnificentiæ' c.1550. Antonio Martinez of Salamanca (1478-1562) published prints in Rome from c.1517 until his death, latterly in partnership with Antonio Lafreri. The plates of the Speculum passed to Lafreri after Salamanca died, then onto Lafreri's nephew Claudio Duchetti. Hendrik van Schoel (c.1565-1622) of Antwerp, bought a number of Duchetti's plates for re-issue in a business in Rome.

(con armi dorate impresse al piatto anteriore, coincidenti con l'ex-libris muto, entrambi risalenti al 1600 ca.) con titoli ms. al dorso su tass. di carta; traccia di antica colitura del dorso, pratica in uso in alcune biblioteche tedesche tra XVI e XVII secolo. Due antichi timbretti di biblioteca religiosa tedesca dismessa. Qualche sporadico punto di naturale brunitura. Ben conservato. Capolavoro della scienza giuspolitica cinquecentesca del giurista angevino Jean Bodin (1520-1596). L'opera, edita in lingua francese nel 1576, venne rielaborata in latino dall'A. nel 1586 allo scopo di agevolarne la circolazione dottrinale in Europa. Le originali teorie su temi come tirannide, tirannicidio, usura, tolleranza religiosa e soprattutto sovranità, scatenarono molteplici reazioni dottrinali, ancora vivaci alla fine del Seicento. La dottrina politica bodiniana è da considerare in definitiva il ponte ideale fra la tradizione tardo-medievale e la cultura giuridica moderna protesa alla sistemazione dell'idea di Stato. Cfr.       In Brescia, appresso Pietro Maria Marchetti 1591 - Cm. 15,5, pp. (40) 763 [recte 765] (3). Ancora aldina al frontespizio, numerosi e graziosi capilettera xilografici. Bella legatura coeva in piena pergamena molle con titoli ms. al dorso. Carta di guardia anteriore assente. Minima mancanza (pochi mm.) al margine esterno bianco delle carte iniziali, trascurabile forellino di tarlo alle ultime 3 carte, lieve alone limitato alle carte iniziali e finali, sporadiche fioriture. Esemplare nel complesso genuino e ben conservato. Tomás de Mercado (1530-1575), teologo della Scuola di Salamanca e brillante economista spagnolo, è ritenuto uno dei primi pensatori tomisti e mercantilisti. Questo celebre trattato "Tratos y contratos de mercaderes y tratantes" fu originariamente pubblicato a Salamanca nel 1569 e poi ampliato in una seconda edizione a Siviglia nel 1571, con il titolo di "Suma de tratos y contratos". L'opera è divisa in quattro parti principali riguardanti i contratti, i cambi commerciali, l'usura e la restituzione dei guadagni illeciti. Il trattato influenzò i teologi e gli economisti dalla fine del Cinquecento fino all'opera di Adam Smith e la scuola scozzese dell'economia moderna.       Appresso Gli Heredi di Simon Galignani, Venetia 1591 - WIth contemporary hand-coloring of all illustrations, including the title page, and decorative devices, of a book seldom found with color. 4to. 30 by 20.5 cm. [6], 95 pp. Each of the 23 chapters features a hand-colored illustration of the particular funeral rite. These measure 9 by 15 cm, oblong. Plus coloring of the rinceaux bands at the chapter heads, the letter devices at the beginning of chapter texts, and foot decorations at the close of the chapters, plus a more elaborate statuary decoration at the close of the book. Besides the beauty of the hand-coloring, the color greatly aids in the delineation of detailing. Brunet IV 820. Title page heavily soiled. Dampstaining to closing pages. Scattered soiling in between. Images, though, are consistently bright and fresh. Vellum, which is near contemporary, has band of soiling running on both front and back. Some surface abrasion to vellum, and other wear. Old title label on spine chipped. Newer plain endpapers.

      1586 or 1591. - Plate mark 33 x 51,5 cm. The whole sheet 40,5 x 54 cm. A map of the Sound (Öresund) published for Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer s "Spieghel der Zeewaerdt" the world s earliest printed sea atlas. The first edition was issued in 1584 with dutch text on tthe back. The present edition has latin text on the back and was either published in 1586 or 1591. Waghenaer used to sail the Baltics but settled in his native port town of Enkhuizen in northern Holland in 1579 and began to prepare his great sea atlas, which became one of the most famous and intriguing atlas of all times. It was not only a great innovation but also a great work of art beautifully laid out and executed by one of the best engravers in Holland - Jan van Deutecom. The atlas became an instant success and became the blue print for similar works for the next several hundred years. An uncommon map. Some offsetting of lettering on the facing sides. Seltene zeitgenössische Dokumentation über die Ereignisse im achten Hugenottenkrieg. Die Kupfer zeigen Szenen aus dem Leben von Heinrich III., verschiedene Schlachten mit Stadtansichten (Dieppe, Dreux, Auneau, Paris etc.) und am Schluss eine schöne Karte mit Vogelschauansicht auf die Ile de France. 1596 erschien eine Art unabhängiger Fortsetzung über weitere Ereignisse (VD 16 ZV 8030; ohne Ilustrationen). Das vorliegende Werk ist komplett mit allen Kupfern, eventuell fehlt ein weiteres weisses Blatt vor den Kupfern (eines vorhanden). - Exemplar aus der berühmten Bibliothek des kaiserlichen Rates und grossen Bibliophilen Franz Gottfried von Troilo von Lessotho (ca. 1580-1650), auf dem Titel sein eigenhändiger Besitzvermerk. "- Wenige kleine Wurmstiche ohne Textverlust, papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, am Ende kleine Feuchtränder nur im weissen Rand. Der hübsche Einband ohne Bindebänder und aufgebogen, Vorderdeckel mit altem handschriftlichem Titel "Historia von der Liga.".

A very good copy, and a good example of the use of the "civililte" typeface. The popular and prolific Spanish author Antonio de Guevara (1480 - 1545) was one of Spain's most important Renaissance writers. The work is published in three languages, Spanish, French, and Italian as a sort of courtesy book, disapproving of court life and preferring village life, as the title suggests. The argument seems to be that the importance of money in courtly life and behaviour leads to wickedness and debauchery, while the life of the common labouring man leads to moral certitude and stability. Just another romanticizing of the happy peasant. The work was first published in 1539 and many times reprinted. Ernest Gray: Guevera: A Forgotten Renaissance Author (2012). For the typeface, see Carter (Harry) and Vervkuet (H.D.L.): "Civilite types" (Oxford Bibliographical Society, 1966), no, 265*. As every schoolboy knows, the civilite typeface, imitating French cursive letters of the Renaissance, was invented in 1557 by the French engraver Robert Granjon, Jean de Tournes (1504 – 1564) was a French printer, book publisher and bookseller, and the founder of a long-lasting family printing business. Reprint of a treatise on the qualities of the balsamum tree, first published in Venice in 1511. After obtaining his doctor's degree in 1578, Alpini settled as a physician in Campo San Pietro, a small town in the Paduan territory. But his tastes were botanical, and to extend his knowledge of exotic plants he travelled to Egypt in 1580 as physician to George Emo or Hemi, the Venetian consul in Cairo. In Egypt he spent three years, and from a practice in the management of date palms, which he observed in that country, he seems to have deduced the doctrine of the sexual difference of plants, which was adopted as the foundation of the Linnaean taxonomy system. He says that "the female date-trees or palms do not bear fruit unless the branches of the male and female plants are mixed together; or, as is generally done, unless the dust found in the male sheath or male flowers is sprinkled over the female flowers". Oblong 16mo (4 1/8" x 5 1/8"); pagination: 209-361, plus 17 pages, including an Index and approbatio, with 72 plates on 71 leaves (lacking 4 plates and the text on the verso). This copy has two approbation leaves, both dated 1590. The final plate is the full-page Plantin device with the legend 'Labore et Constantinia.' Newly bound by Fitterer to style in full calf with a gilded spine. Ascribed to both the medieval grammarian Aelius Donatus and to Lactantius Placidus. The etchings are by Pieter van der Borcht, who signed the plate on p. 357. (Van der Borcht went to work for Christopher Plantin at an early age and designed many of his typographical ornaments.) It is complete, as per bibliographic references; divided into three numbered sections, of 43 pages, 21 unnumbered pages, 413 pages, 3 unnumbered pages, and 448 pages, and 28 unnumbered pages of notes, making it 956 pages in all. As called for, Page 99 incorrectly numbered 47, p. 448 numbered 414. OCLC 16258765. > It is in good antiquarian condition, with some age and humidity toning, some light foxing, some old ink notes made in an early hand, evidence of early repair of the first blank, book block solid, binding firm, several engraved headpieces, the vellum binding shows light soiling but is very handsome, "yapp edges" (folded vellum to protect the pages) intact; and with beautiful, apparently original, spine title lettering with date, MD XCI. This is a very important early edition of the the famous Roman Pliny, dating back to 1591, and including his famous and vivid account of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, as well as his correspondence with the Emperor Trajan on Christians. Handsomely printed and bound in full original vellum leather, with original title on spine, this important edition comes from one of the foremost early printing houses in Europe, the House of Stephanus, famed for handsome printing and scholarly erudition. The exceedingly rare first edition of the work in which we find the first depiction of the Jelling Stone, also known as "Denmark's birth certificate", and its famous rune inscription for the first time in print. The work is of exceptional importance to Danish history and of specifically important to our current knowledge of the Jelling Stone and where it was placed. The Jelling stone is a massive carved runestone from the 10th century, found at the town of Jelling in Denmark. It was raised by King Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth in memory of his parents, celebrating his conquest of Denmark and Norway, and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity. The runic inscriptions on these stones are considered the best known in Denmark and are of the utmost importance to the history of the country. The seminal Jelling Stone is often called "Denmark's birth certificate", because Denmark is named in the inscription and also because the stone is a clear material proof of the change in religion - from paganism to Christianity. Furthermore, it is strongly identified with the creation of Denmark as a nation state. The inscription translates thus: "King Harald ordered these kumbls made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thyra, his mother; that Harald who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian". Værket er således af største betydning for dansk historie og endog af konkret betydning for vor nuværende viden om Jellingstenen og dens placering."1586 endelig blev Jællinge-Runestenene en almindeligere Gjenstand for bevarende og undersøgende Opmærksomhed, hvilket baade var en Frugt af de tidligere Bestræbelser, - der dog ganske vist ikke havde indskrænket sig til blot ovenstaande, som er det nu derom bekjendte - og en Opfordring til mere, og navnlig blev det Anledningen til, at der skete en god Begyndelse med at føre vore Runestenes Indskrifter ind i Litteraturen. Huitfeldt kaldes den, i det dens Indskrift der er blevet optaget, "Stenen ved Kirkedören", og begge Indskrifter, baade den store Stens og den "in parvi lapide", blev strax meddlete i et Skrift, som paa den lærde Henr. Contemporary limp vellum, cloth ties, contained within a modern morocco backed cloth box. A fine wide-margined copy of the first Latin edition of a seminal illustrated work for early North America, with Jacques Le Moyne's spectacular images of the region's Native Americans and a very important map of Florida. With the publication of this work, together with Hariot's Virginia, De Bry launched what would later become known as his Grand Voyages. These first two works are without question the most important of the series both in terms of their contemporary influence and their historical and ethnographic value to modern scholars and collectors. The text of the Brevis narratio. describes the earliest French settlements of what are now portions of the United States and are here united by De Bry with engravings based on watercolours by a member of the expedition to the New World. To most of the Old World, this work presented the first accurate eyewitness depiction and account of Native Americans. In the mid-1560s two French expeditions led by Jean Ribault and René Goulaine de Laudonnière sought to establish a Hugenot settlement in Florida. Among those accompanying Laudonnière was Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues: born in Dieppe, France in about 1533, he was appointed artist to the expedition which sailed in April 1564. Arguably the first western artist to visit the New World, Le Moyne recorded the scenery of Florida and the lives of the Timucua Indians in great detail, as well as charting the coastline of Florida and much of present-day South Carolina. Unfortunately, the nascent French colony was seen as a threat by the Spanish, the dominant European power in the region, and in September 1565 a force led by Pedro Menendez massacred the French colonists at Fort Caroline. Le Moyne and several others, however, made a miraculous escape. The story of their struggles was not published until 1588, when, at the instigation of Richard Hakluyt, Laudonnière's journal was published in Paris. Later that year, master engraver and publisher Theodor De Bry traveled to London, and met with Le Moyne in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain illustrations of the region to accompany a new edition of Laudonnière's journal. Following Le Moyne's death the following year, De Bry returned to London and purchased the watercolours from his widow. It was on this trip to London that De Bry met Hakluyt, who informed him of the British expeditions to Virginia, shared with him both Hariot's journal and White's watercolours from the expedition and suggested the publication of a series of illustrated voyages to America, beginning with Hariot/White and Laudonnière/Le Moyne. De Bry returned to Frankfurt and in 1590 published the former in Latin, German, French and English; the following year he published the latter in Latin and German, presumably having found that there was only a small market for the other languages. Le Moyne's extraordinary illustrations of the Florida Indians, which appear on forty-two leaves of this work in their first published form, rank with those of John White as the best visual record of American Indians before the 19th century. They show all aspects of Indian life, including settlements, ceremonies, wars, agriculture, hunting, and preparation of food. They also show scenes of the French settlement and their involvement with the Indians. These images were widely copied for centuries, and many later supposedly original illustrations of American Indians are actually copies of Le Moyne's illustrations. Rare first edition of Theodor de Bry's (1528-98) great illustrated work on 'Florida', in a copy fit for one of the consummate collectors of 16th-century illustrated books, lavishly bound in red morocco with the gold-tooled arms on the upper and lower covers for the Prince of Essling (1836-1959): its 42 copper engravings representing the earliest European encounter with native North American culture are in this copy remarkably fine strikes, richly inked with excellent plate tone. Famously describing a region then extending across much of the southeast of the present-day United States, the work represents the first printing of the narrative of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533-88), which Lawrence Wroth has characterized as "the most informative and satisfactory of all books on the Huguenot colony in Florida [the first attempt by a European nation to found a colony north of the Rio Grande]. The large map, the first to show the French colony, and the fascinating plates of Florida scenes and life engraved by De Bry after Le Moyne's drawings, make this an indispensable Florida item" (Streeter, 1172), and a vivid pictorial record of this crucial period of American history in general, as well as an indispensable work for understanding the culture of the now lost Timucua people in particular. The narrative represents the second part of De Bry's Grand Voyages, a series issued in thirteen parts over a period of nearly forty years, and is one of the most desirable illustrated works for the collector of North Americana, being one of only two parts by De Bry which deal exclusively with North America (Thomas Harriot's Virginia appeared in 1590). Le Moyne, a member of the ill-fated 1564 French expedition led by Jean Ribault (1520-65) and René de Laudonnière (c. 1529-74), describes and depicts the first contact between the French explorers and the Timucua, as well as the establishment of Fort Caroline (near modern-day Jacksonville) and Charlesfort (modern Parris Island, South Carolina). The majority of De Bry's engravings examine the rites and customs of the Timucua, with plates devoted to their religious practice, methods of warfare (including the dismemberment of captives), manner of dress, agriculture, cuisine, architecture, games, marriage ceremonies, and other celebrations. Included here are the famous depictions of the Timucua hunting while cloaked in the full hides of deer, fending off giant alligators, and searching for gold. The final plate depicts the killing of Pierre Gambie, a symbol of the deteriorating relationships with the natives that, along with the Spanish attacks of 1565, ultimately doomed the fledgling Huguenot colonies in Florida. The present copy is complete except for the (unsigned H2) colophon to the plates, which, in any case, is rarely present ("Stevens could not find it in forty of the copies which he examined" -- Church, p. 334), and the integral blank (unsigned K6) at the end.

Hand-coloring of this quality is outstandingly rare in any English work of this period, and such an extensive suite of illustrations is very unusual for purely literary works. Containing "the best known engraved illustrations in an English book before 1700" (Hodnett, p. 46), Harington's Orlando Furioso represents a landmark in engraving in England, an achievement that Harington himself highlighted in his prefatory comments on the "vse of the Pictures" in the book, noting that its images "are all cut in brasse, and most of them by the best workemen of that kinde," and that he had "not seene anie made in England better, nor (in deed) any of this kinde, in any booke." He further states that, although England had produced some impressive illustrated volumes, "all their figures are cut in wood, & none in metall, and in that respect inferior to these" (fol. Ar).In these remarks "Harington gives us the first critical comment on book illustrating by an Englishman" (Hodnett, p. 46), and by citing the fine English woodcut books of "Liuy, Gesner, Alciats emblemes, a booke de Spectris in Latin, & (in our tong) the Chronicles, the booke of Martyrs, the book of hauking and hunting, and M. Whitneys excellent Emblems," he announces his intention to produce an illustrated volume comparable to the best yet produced in England. Marca tipografica al titolo (abilmente reintegrato al margine bianco inferiore); margini un poco rifilati ma buon esemplare lavato in legatura pergamena semifloscia posteriore, reinserita. Unica edizione. E’ il trattato meno noto e più raro del L., probabilmente redatto molto prima che fosse afflitto dalla cecità che lo colpì nel 1571. In pratica è un consistente ampliamento del capitolo XVII nel libro settimo del Trattato della pittura. Vi si teorizza il moderno concetto della collocazione in Musei come definizione ideale dei "luoghi delle Muse". Ricco di citazioni elaborate di artisti (Vasari, Michelangelo, la scuola fiamminga) e di letterati (Doni, Aretino, Pontano, Folengo), non sceglie quindi un modello preciso a cui ispirarsi. Un’analisi approfondita di quest’opera è stata elaborata nella recente edizione critica del trattato, e in particolare da A. RUFFINO, Le muse di Lomazzo: avviamento all’iconosofia, Trento 2002.
