Bonoiae Apud Alexandrum Benatium. Facultate a Suepeioribus concessa 1590 - FIRST EDITION. Folio, 295 x 208 mms., pp [xviii], [660], 330 numbered leaves, engraved title-page, with engraved vignette, printed in double columns, woodcut vignettes at start of each book, contemporary annotation on lower margin of title-page contemporary sheepskin, a monastery binding, with ownership stamps on title-page, and ownership inscripiton on rect of front free end-paper, printer's colophon on verso of last leaf, spine gilt in compartments (but worn), with what looks like an early repair; lower front joint cracked. A well-used copy but still in good condition; ex-library. "This treatise describes the many ways in which the saintly conduct of St. Francis of Assisi (1182–1226) conformed to the life and teachings of Christ. The original manuscript of this work, presented to the Franciscan Order by the Franciscan friar Bartholomeus de Pisis in 1399, featured a full-page drawing of Christ crucified on the allegorical 'Tree of Conformity'. In 1542 the Lutheran scholar Erasmus Albertus (ca. 1500–1543) intentionally misread the book's representation of St. Francis as a saintly reflection of Christ in order to ridicule the Franciscan Order for believing that St. Francis was the equal of Christ. For Catholic scholars, however, the book long remained a highly regarded compendium of Franciscan principles" (Perkins School of Theology).          Persici sive Sophorum regni typus.

Antwerpen ca. , 1590 - Kupferstichkarte, 49 x 39 cm. Breitrandig und sehr gut erhalten. Wide margins, very good condition. * vdBroecke 167. A finely engraved, very decorative map of the Persian Empire (with the modern Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Eastern Iraq), rich in placenames, obviously based on Italian sources, as they were frequent travellers to this part of the world. An interesting error is the depiction of the Caspian Sea as longer and narrower than in reality, while the number of rivers flowing into the Persian Gulf is exagerated.

It shows a view of the city of Huy, in the Belgian Ardennes region, with key to locations. Handcoloured engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This print originates from Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', part 2 (Koln: 1575-1612).Artists and Engravers: Engraved after Franz Hogenberg. Hogenberg (1533-1588) was the son of a Munich engraver who settled in Malines. He engraved most of the plates for Ortelius' Theatrum and the majority of those in the Civitates, and may have been responsible for originating the project. Worked and died in Cologne/Germany. He was a prolific copper engraver and etching artist of maps and town views. In cooperation with Georg Braun he created the first four volumes of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum in 1572. The fifth and sixth volume was created by Simon van den Neuwel (Novellanus). Georg Braun (1542-1622), a German publisher and Frans Hogenberg issued the famous six volume town book "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" between 1572 and 1618. The volumes originally published in Latin, follow by German and French translations. The plates passed to Jan Janssonius who reissued the town books in 1657 while removing the costume figures on the plates. Condition: Very good, given age. Middle fold, as issued. A few stains in the bottom margin. Mild paper erosion in the middle fold, affecting the colouring. Storage location: LJC-B1-19 The overall size is ca. 20.9 x 14.4 inch. First edition of this history of the Northern Netherlands, relying on traditional accounts of the origin and identity of the Frisians to prove the ancient autonomy of the region, and thereby its independence from the dominant province of Holland. The author (Sjoerd Pietersz), professor of philology at the universities of Erfurt and Cologne, and sometime secretary and librarian to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, established a line of legendary Frisian monarchs, beginning with Friso, his brothers Saxo and Bruno, who reputedly left India in the fourth century bc, studied with Plato, fought for Philip and Alexander of Macedon, and then settled in Frisia, where they drove away aboriginal giants and founded Groningen. 1 The Frisian language, he claimed, inherited much from Greek and from Hebrew, and even more from Indian. 2 Reprinted in 1598, the book instigated a controversy in which Ubbo Emmius and Bernardus Fumerius participated, watched closely by Scaliger. 3 [img-2404-left-large_default] Author's presentation inscription to Gregor Tengnagel, a jurist of the Imperial Chamber Court in Speyer (page height 165 mm) On the title-page and again on the upper cover of our copy, Suffridus Petrus has written presentation inscriptions to Gregor Tengnagel, a lawyer born at Louvain about 1555, who was then employed as a judge of the imperial court (Reichskammergerichtsassessor) in Speyer. 4 Gregor's books were inherited by his brother Philipp 5 and afterwards passed through the Helfenstein library into the Fürstenberg library at Donaueschingen.

"Artillery and military arts in Spain in 1590". Small folio; folding table on page 170 and the final folio containing the errata sheet and colophon in facsimile; modern binding. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this classic text regarding military discipline and artillery. The author, Diego de Álava y Viamont, was the son of the captain general of artillery, don Frances de Álava, member of the Council of War and ambassador to France, a man of great influence in the court who intervened in collection of books for the library of El Escorial. His son, Diego de Álava y Viamont, was born in Vitoria in 1555.Diego de Álava published his book thanks to influential sponsors. In first place, El Perfeto Capitán is dedicated to King Felipe II, and enjoyed his support, without doubt thanks to the father of the author. Further, it has a prologue by don Antonio de Toledo and a letter from El Brocense to the author. As was common at the time, Diego de Álava begins the book with praise of the basic military sciences: arithmetic, geometry, and artillery. Among the six books of the work, the fifth treats the new science of artillery based upon the theories of Tartaglia. El Perfeto Capitán enjoyed great success and its author, Diego de Álava y Viamont, was elected to report on another text of the military art: the Comentario en breve Compendio de disciplina militar by Mosquera y Figueroa, printed in Madrid in 1596. He has published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. From 1666, Pieter Goos, his son, also published a number of well produced atlases. He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe. A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Initiated in 1659 by Doncker, the approach was also adopted by Goos from 1666. One of his larger works is named le grand & nouveau miroir ou flambeau de la mer (1662).In the same year, Goos published -The Lighting Colomne or Sea-Mirrour-, which not only contained nautical charts, but also -a brief instruction of the art of navigation-.The maps of Goos and Gerard van Kuelen were used exclusively during the eighteenth century until 1740. They were, however, found to have deficiencies such as the location of sandbars, grand banks and islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with inaccuracies of as much as 44 leagues on the reduced Goos maps.Goos' famous world map titled Atlas ofte Water-Weereld was in two parts, one for each hemisphere. The colourful presentation included the two poles. His maritime maps encompassed not only Europe, Great Britain and Ireland but also the two poles.

         Aprutii ulterioris descriptio

Piccolo strappo all'estremità del margine destro. Piccolo restauro in basso alla piega centrale.Bibliografia: Van den Broecke 138.

A charte of the island of Cap Verd

Artist: Goos Abraham ( - 1643) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1650 1590 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Upper left and right corner perfectly replaced; - size (in cm): 44 x 54; - description: Map shows the Island of Cap Verde; -vita of the artist: Abraham Goos (1590?1643), was a cartographer and map seller.

Ferrara: Benedetto Mamarello, 1590. 8vo (144x95 mm); early 18th-century half vellum, gilt title on morocco label on spine, yellow edges; (4), 170, (2) ll. With the printer's device on the title-page. Giovanni Vacchelli Casoni's bookplate. At the end ownership's entry by Gustavo Zuiardi. Light damp stains in the last leaves, a few gatherings slightly browned, but a very good copy.RARE FIRST EDITION, dedicated by the translator Girolamo Naselli to Don Cesare d'Este (Ferrara, November 24, 1590), of the first Italian translation of Montaigne's Essais. Though partial and expurgated, it represents the first translation into any foreign language of Montaigne's masterpiece. The first complete Italian translation by Girolamo Canini was published only in 1633 by Marco Ginammi.Naselli was a courtier at the Ferrara court and since 1557 an agent of the ducal chancellery. For his translation, he probably used a copy of the second edition of the Essais, that issued in two books at Bordeaux by Millanges in 1582. Naselli found the volume presumably during a mission in France, between March and May 1589, at a very critical stage in the relationships between the king and the Ligue. On that occasion he brought back with him to Ferrara several works on the political situation of France, some of which he judged worthy of being translated into Italian for the dignitaries of the Este court.Naselli translated 44 of the 84 chapters that form the first two books. He does not seem to know the third book, first appeared in 1588. He arranged the chapters in a different order as the original, favoring those related to political and moral issues. The Discorsi morali, politici et militari was printed by Benedetto Mammarelli, who in 1589 took over the printing house from his brother Domenico and in a very short time became a serious rival for Vittorio Baldini, the most important Ferrarese typographer of the time. Thanks to the collaboration with Girolamo Naselli, in 1590 he also published an Italian translation of the treatise De la naissance, durée et cheute des Estats by René de Lucinge. As Montaigne himself refers in his Journal des voyages, upon his arrival in Rome on November 1580, his copy of the Essais, freshly released from the press, was confiscated and examined by a Papal commission, which in the end decided not to condemn the book but provided Montaigne with a list of censored passages that should have been removed in a new edition of the work. It is not clear whether Naselli followed for his edition the instructions given to Montaigne by the censors or the choice of the expurgated and omitted parts of text was entirely his.At the end is added the anonymous essay Questione se il forestiere deve esser admesso al governo della Republica, ò nò ('Question whether a foreigner should be admitted to the government of the Republic'), allegedly written by Naselli himself. Despite Naselli's attempt to conform Montaigne's Essais to the dictate of the Roman Church, when in 1676 Montaigne was definitely condemned by the Inquisition and his work put in the Index, his 1590 edition was included in the condemnation (cf. M. Palumbo, Introduzione, in: "M. de Montaigne, Discorsi morali, politici et military", E. Canone & M. Palumbo, eds., Naples, 2009).Edit 16, CNCE 35895; J. Balsamo, Naselli, Girolamo, in: "Dictionnaire de Michel de Montaigne", P. Desan, ed., Paris, 2004, pp. 809-810; P. Desan, Traductions des 'Essais', in: "Dictionnaire de Michel de Montaigne", P. About the authors: Augustinus Hunnaeus or Hunnäus (1521-1577) was a Belgian theologian who studied theology at the University of Leuven, where he became Doctor of Philosophy. He taught Greek and Hebrew at the Gymnasium castrense of Leuven. He later became professor of theology at the local University. Hunnaeus is one of the Syncretists of his time, whose work is based on Aristotle and Petrus Hispanus. He contributed to the Plantin Polyglot, a polyglot Bible printed by Christopher Plantin in Antwerp. Thomas Cajetan (1469-1534), was an Italian philosopher, theologian, cardinal (from 1517 until his death) and the Master of the Order of Preachers 1508-18. He was a leading theologian of his day who is now best known as the spokesman for Catholic opposition to the teachings of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation while he was the Pope's Legate in Wittenberg, and perhaps also among Catholics for his extensive commentary on the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Saint Thomas Aquinas OP (1225 -1274) was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. The name Aquinas identifies his ancestral origins in the county of Aquino in present-day Lazio.
