Nova et succincta, vera tamen historia de amplissimo, potentissimoque, nostro quidem orbi hactenus incognito, sed perpaucis abhinc annis explorato Regno China.

Frankfurt: S. Feyerabend? 1589 - 8vo (15.4 x 9.5 cm). Title printed in red and black; with two final blank leaves present at end. Contemporary vellum with overlapping fore-edges, edges stained red (rebacked). First Latin edition of this important general description of China, containing the accounts of the Augustinian and Franciscan friars to China via the Philippines. The first edition in German appeared previously the same year. The work also includes an itinerary of the New World and the discovery of Mexico, translated by Luc de la Porte from the writings of Father Margin Ignacio, detailing his travels to Mexico, the Canaries, Santa Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. "According to Nicholas Antonio, the . Itinerary of the New World . was written by F. Martin Ignacio, and was never published separately. The itinerary gives curious details concerning the Canaries, St. Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, Porto Rico, and especially Mexico. Ortelius, in his Atlas, declared that he had received more information concerning America, from this itinerary than from any other single book" (Sabin 27775). The book is dedicated to Count Anton Fugger. Adams G-870; Alden & Landis 589/30; Cordier Sinica I, 14-15; Lust 27; Palau 105516; Sabin 27781. [Attributes: First Edition]

THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT OF JESUS translated out of Vulgar Latine by the Papists of the Traiterous Seminairie at Rhemes...whereunto is added, The Translation out of the Original Greeke

London: Deputies of Christopher Barker, 1589. Illustrated with elaborate woodcut border to title- page, woodcut floriated and historiated initials and headpieces. Folio in sixes, (leaf size 273 x 190 mm); with generous margins to all edges - a copy that does not appear to have been much trimmed and therefore has a larger leaf size, it would seem, than most other copies. Contemporary full brown panelled calf over wooden boards, rebacked. Later 19th century marbled end papers, four blank leaves to the front, two of which appear original and have various 17th and 18th century inscriptions in a number of different hands - William Gould his book 1784 etc. Robert Laulay[?] with the date 1651 appears bottom of Vvv4 b. Collation - Signatures: *4, A-Y6, Aa-Yy6, Aaa-Yyy6, Aaaa-Vvvv6, Xxxx4; but this copy missing 10 leaves as follows: *4, A1, D1, D2, Rr5, Cccc1, Cccc4. Dddd5, Xxxx2 & Xxxx3. Despite these few missing leaves, the contents are generally very good, barring the following few faults, slight loss from the inside corner at the head of Ccc3 affecting just a few words, chip to the head of Hhhh5 affecting running title, loss to the top outer corner of Vvvv5 affecting about 20% of the text, top corner tip missing from Vvvv6 but just missing text, chip from lower inside corner of the last leaf affecting about 5% of the text. A few other leaves with short tears but no apparent loss of text. . A little worming, generally minimal and does not detract, light staining to the lower gutter of a few leaves, name to head of the title page which has a small repaired chip to the lower outer corner. Rebacked sometime in the 19th century but this has again failed and rebacked again but preserving the spine of the original reback. Now good and strong; original boards good with some general wear and rubbing, lower corners chipped, some old worm holes, catches to the rear board, but clasps missing. But for the few missing leaves, a very good copy. The first Fulke edition, with Bishop's version and Rheims New Testament in parallel columns. 'It was the first systematic and comprehensive attempt to refute the arguments and accusations contained in the Rheims New Testament of 1582' (Herbert 202).. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Folio.

1589 Julius Caesar WAR Commentaries Military Tactics Illustrated MAP Pompeii

LXXXIX. [1589]. - 1589 Julius Caesar WAR Commentaries Military Tactics Illustrated MAP Pompeii HUGE FOLIO edited by Famous CIPHER Vigenere “If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it!” – Julius Caesar A rare collection of civil war histories and Julius Caesar war commentaries by Blaise de Vigenere. Vigenere is most remembered for his cipher, called the ‘Vigenere cipher’, which was a method for encrypting text using a series of Caesar ciphers. Julius Caesar’s war commentaries are some of the most prolific military writings! While not specifically known for his writing, Julius Caesar wrote this book which would become a mainstay in the Latin literature canon. It focuses on first-hand account of Julius Caesar in the Callic wars, but it was written as though from a third-person view. This book is incredibly illustrated with in-text engravings on wood depicting animals, city views, and maps as described by Julius Caesar. It also includes Pliny’s ‘Eloges de Cesar’, ‘Abregez de Flore by Florus, and ‘Sommaire d’Eutrope’ by Eutropius. LXXXIX. With a full-page engraved portrait of the author-artist, 1 full-page and 8 half-page engraved illustrations by Van de Venne. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges.

Arents II, 194; Franken, Vander Venne, p. 99, III; 8015. First and only edition of a charming and amusing little book of verse, the first part primarily devoted to peat as fuel and the second part to the bizarre dream of a pipe-smoking blacksmith and his encounters with devils and with death, beautifully illustrated in a satirical style by the painter (and in this case also author) Adriaen van de Venne. Van de Venne (1589-1662) is best known for his paintings and emblematic prints, but after the death of his brother, a printer in Middelburg, he published books in The Hague, moving his shop to the Turfmarkt (Peat Market) between 1629 and 1634. That location no doubt led him to write and illustrate the present book, in which the first part is an ode to peat. The title and the style of illustrations suggests a sort of mock emblemata, but the book does not appear in the emblemata literature. Beyond its interest as humour, art, and the history of peat, tobacco and pipe smoking, the book illustrates the blacksmiths with their tools and equipment.First flyleaf detached, slightly browned and a tiny tear in the margin of the second leaf and author's portrait. Binding rubbed along the extremities, top of spine slightly damaged. Overall in good condition.

Florence: Domenico & Francesco Manzani, 1589. 8vo (157x108 mm); later stiff vellum, ink title on spine; 60, (4) pp. Printer's device on the title-page and at last leaf verso. Faded ownership's inscription on the title-page no more readable. Slightly browned and foxed throughout, more strongly on pp. 17-34, marginal stains in the last leaves, but all in all a good, genuine copy.VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, dedicated by Domenico Manzani to the Archconsul of the Accademia della Crusca, Pier Francesco Cambi, of this gastronomic burlesque work in praise of the pork and sausage. The text comprises the verses of the Capitolo sopra la salciccia and an extensive commentary on it. Grazzini celebrates many different kinds of food, but comes to the conclusion that the pork meat is the finest of all and that sausage is the most delicious part of the pork, preferable to any other. He gives then the recipe for the sausage "alla fiorentina" (in Florentine style), according to him absolutely the best, and reports several entertaining stories related to the sausage, with comic and sometimes erotic effects. Finally Grazzini describes how to prepare the "pan'unto' (fried bread), which he considers superior to the trebbiano soup and to caviar (cf. A. Grazzini, Comento di Mastro Nicodemo dalla Pietra al Migliaio sopra il Capitolo della salsiccia, D. Romei, M. Plaisance & F. Pignatti, eds., Manziana, 2005, passim).A.F. Grazzini was born in Florence in 1504. He started his literary career in the 1530s, when this work was composed. In 1540 in the house of Giovanni Mazzuoli, called Stradino, took place the first meeting of the Accademia degli Umidi, which wanted to revive the Florentine tradition of burlesque poetry. In the following years, however, with the admittance of erudite scholars like Cosimo Bartoli, Benedetto Varchi and Pierfrancesco Giambullari, the Academy was transformed into an official literary academy, the Accademia Fiorentina, in which every member was obliged to hold an academic speech on a specific subject. Therefore, in 1547 Grazzini, who had refused to comply to this new rule, was expelled from the academy to be readmitted again only two years later, in 1549. Grazzini, however, never gave up to his program of editing texts belonging to the Tuscan popular tradition. He published the Primo libro delle opere burlesche di M. Francesco Berni in 1548 and the collection Tutti i trionfi, carri, mascherate o canti carnascialeschi andati per Firenze dal tempo del magnifico Lorenzo il vecchio in 1559.In the last period of his life Grazzini animated a new literary circle that gathered at the Giunti bookstore and which in a few years would gave birth to the famous Accademia della Crusca. In the new academy he maintained the pseudonym of Lasca and was able to keep alive the ludic and popular tradition that had previously been of the Umidi. Even after the admittance of Leonardo Salviati and the official birth in 1583 of the Accademia della Crusca, Lasca remained in his place and, while the erudite members like Salviati and De' Rossi were already working on the Dante edition that would appear in 1595, in 1583 the Academy printed the Cicalamento sopra il sonetto Passere e beccafichi magri arrosto by G.M. Cecchi, in 1584 Il Lasca dialogo by Salviati and, in 1589, the posthumous present Lezione by Grazzini (cf. D. Romei, Poesia satirica e giocosa nell'ultimo trentennio del Cinqucento, in: "Nuovo Rinascimento", URL:http://www.nuovorinascimento.org/n-rinasc/saggi/rtf/romei/cinquec.rtf, 1998, pp. 9-10).Grazzini is also the author of several comic dramas and the famous Cene, a collection of tales that remained unpublished until the 18th century (cf. C. Spalanca, Anton Francesco Grazzini e la cultura del suo tempo, Palermo, 1981, passim).Edit 16, CNCE21687; BMSTC Italian, p. 370; D.B.I., LIX, p. 34.

Many contemporary owner's marks and scribbles in ink on the title page, a.o. by John Goodington and John Bonoyer. Exlibris Daniel de Bruin. (7) pages text and 120 pages with full page woodcuts by and after Jost Amman. The woodcuts depict 61 coats-of-arms, 32 allegories and portraits (some may be portraits of the noblemen related to the coats-of-arms) and 27 costumes (tracht). Every plate comes with a poem of 8 lines presumably by Feyrabendt. This famous, rare and early book on heraldry and other subjects was intended for all those who love and appreciate the free arts. It is a showpiece of the skills of the artist Jost Amman, with great variety in the illustrations. The woodcuts of the coats-of-arms are wonderfully detailed and provide information for all those interested in heraldry. Jost Amman (June 13, 1539 - March 17, 1591) was a Swiss artist, celebrated chiefly for his woodcuts, done mainly for book illustrations. Amman was born in Zurich, the son of a professor of Classics and Logic. He was himself well-educated. Little of his personal history is known beyond the fact that he moved to Nuremberg in 1560, where he continued to reside until his death in March 1591. He worked initially with Virgil Solis, then a leading producer of book illustrations. His productiveness was very remarkable, as may be gathered from the statement of one of his pupils, that the drawings he made during a period of four years would have filled a hay wagon. A large number of his original drawings are in the Berlin print room. About 1,500 prints are attributed to him. He was one of the last major producers of woodcuts for books, as during his career engravings were gradually taking over that role. Sometimes he included both a cutter's knife and a quill pen in his printed signature on prints, showing that he cut his own blocks. Most woodcut artists normally let a specialist Formschneider cut the block after his drawing, but in these cases Amman did it himself. A series of engravings by Amman of the kings of France, with short biographies, appeared in Frankfurt in 1576. Sigismund Feierabend published a Bible in Frankfurt that was with woodcuts by Amman, the Panoplia Omnium Liberalium Mechanicarum et Seden-tariarum Artium Genera Continens, containing 115 plates, which is of great value. Amman's drawing is correct and spirited, and his delineation of the details of costume is minute and accurate. Paintings in oil and on glass are attributed to him, but none have been identified. Amman died in Nuremberg, Bavaria, aged 51. H148

Birkelund nr. 35 - Thesaurus Nr. 213 - Bibl. Danica III:951.

DELLA RAGION DI STATO, LIBRI DIECI Con $1Tre Libri delle Cause della Grandezza, e Magnificenza delle Città$2.

Venezia, appresso I Gioliti, 1589.

Epitome Theatri Orteliani, preacipuarum orbis regionum delineationes, minoribus talibus expressas...

Antwerp: Philippo Gallaeo, 1589. FIRST LATIN EDITION. Contemporary (possibly the original) vellum overlaid onto early vellum; some marginal soiling and browning, index page partially torn, all maps clean. Contemporary ownership signatures on title. First Latin edition under this title, complete with the map plates engraved by Galle, and text printed by Plantin just weeks before his death. The previous Latin edition was first published in 1570 under the title Theatrum orbis terrarum, with Latin poetry rather than prose by Hugo Flavoliusd. Like the Theatrum this version was immensely popular and was translated in prose form into Dutch (1577), French (1579), Italian (1593), English (1603), and German (1604). The miniature version of Ortelius's atlas was mostly used by travelers, students and all those for whom the folio would be inconvenient. Copies were eagerly sought after and usually received considerable wear. The atlas was printed through the eighteenth century. Ortelius (1527-1598) was the father of the modern atlas. His Theatrum orbis terrarium was the world's first regularly produced atlas. Combining maps with comprehensive text, the Theatrum sets the standard for future atlases.
