First edition. Extremely rare chronic of the Cyprus war by an eye-witness, which took place between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, in 1570-73, famous for the naval engagement which took place in 1571: the battle of Lepanto; the conflict began with the Ottoman invasion of Cyprus, Venice, unable to match the strength of Ottoman might, joined the Holy League, a consortium of Catholic states arranged by Pope Pius V, financed mostly by the Spanish Crown. The fall of Cyprus under Venetian control to the Turks in 1571 represented a great shock to the powers of the Christian Western World. The preparation of a failed last attempt by the Christians to defend the island set in motion a chain of events that led to the formation of the Santa Liga which was formed under the auspices of the Pope and was constituted by, Christian States including, Venice, Spain, and the Knights of Malta. The Liga was victorious in the battle of Lepanto but lost La Goleta in the North of Africa 1574. Torres Aguilera, as he states in the introduction, narrates all these events from the point of view of an eye-witness thus making the book a particularly interesting source of first-hand information. The first part of the book (28 leaves) is devoted to Cyprus and its fall. Here, as Torres Aguilera states in his prologue, the reader will 'see a long account of the loss of that famous Kingdom called Cyprus and the ruin of its populated cities of Nicosia and Famagusta'. According to Cervantes' biographer, Astrana Marín, Torres Aguilera's vivid description of the fall of Nicosia influenced Cervantes in his play El Cautivo. Torres Aguilera also tells the story of the ladies of Cyprus who blew up the ships on which they were being transported by the Turks to become concubines to the Great Sultan. This incident is also included in Cervantes' novella El amante liberal. Furthermore, Torres Aguilera's description of the battle of Lepanto is regarded as the most extensive of all contemporary sources. Palau, 336726. IB 18613. Sánchez, Bibliografia aragonesa, vol. 2 no. 562. Not in Blackmer, Navari, The Ottoman World.

Meurer Atlantes Colonienses Die Kolner Schule der Atlas Kartographie 1570-1610; Meurer IOC 8 Map from the very rare Initerarium Europae Provinciae, published in Cologne between 1579 and 1588. Also known as Itinerarium Orbis Christiani, this atlas was published anonymously due to the political and religious problems that characterized that particular period, i.e., the persecutions suffered by the Protestants who were threatened by the Catholics. The work belongs to the atlases published by the so called Cartographic school of Cologne, whose works were published along fifty years (1570-1620). The school was mainly made of Flemish and Dutch refugees among which Mattheaus Quad and Frans Hogenberg, the founder of the institution. The maps have been ascribed to Jan Matal and Michale von Eitzing. Jan Matal, or Metellus, was born in France and worked in Louvaine and Cologne, where he fled to escape the Catholic persecution and where he died in 1597. He was considered one of the greatest cartographers of his time and one of the most important artists of the school of Cologne, together with Quad and Hogenberg. some of his maps have been afterwards included in some posthumous works with the text on verso. From a cartographic point of view, the maps derive from those published by Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp in 1570; the engravings instead have been ascribed to Frans Hogenberg. The rarity of this work, together with the lack of information on the secret works published in Cologne confer a particular charm to this map, a bench mark for every collector. Copper engravings, magnificent contemporary colours, in very good condition. Extremely rare work, not present in any collection. Example in the first state, before the number was added. (?Was immer Aristoteles gesagt haben mag, sei erlogen?). (ADB). Seine Bearbeitung erschien erstmals 1577 in Lyon. - For the last 50 years Ramus has been at the center of considerable scholarly interest and activity. Several of his books have been edited, and various aspects of his philosophy have been explored. The focus has gradually shifted from examining Ramus? own works and his contribution to the development of philosophy or of commentaries of Aristotle to tracing their influence and impact. Studies have been devoted to his followers and to the political and social context in which he developed his ideas and not least to a better understanding of the impact his writings and his program had on the education in early-modern Europe. We now know more about Ramus? own pedagogical ideas and his radical ambition to reform higher education, as well as his political outlook, at least in general terms. We also know that, contrary to early assumptions, his ideas did not have a confessional impact. His pedagogical program was not carried out primarily at Reformed universities. Indeed, it was not at old and well-established universities that professors lectured from the Ramist textbooks but instead at poorer and less renowned schools such as gymnasia or gymnasia illustria. From this perspective, the importance of Ramus? program cannot be overestimated. In small Hanseatic cities and imperial counties and principalities, it became possible, thanks to the Ramist curriculum, to found schools and teach young students, in an adequate way, to fulfill a variety of future positions? (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

Castello S. Angelo Con La Girandola

1579 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1579, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra "Io. Ambr. Bram. Etching and engraving, 1579, signed et dated on the plate, at bottom right, "Io. Ambr. Bram. Inv et fe. 1579". Magnificent proof, rich in tones and contrast, printed on contemporary laid paper, with watermark "anchor in the circle with star", wide margins, in excellent condition. The first edition of this work was published by Claudio Duchetti. The second state was published by Giovanni Orlandi; later his name was abraded, but still readable, and replaced by Henricus van Schoel. A broadside on the firework display called Girandola at the Castello Sant'Angelo in Rome; with an engraving showing a nocturnal scene, in the background the castle, from three of its towers fireworks and smoke developing, in the middle ground the river Tiber and a bridge, in the foreground further fireworks and a crowd of spectators, at the bottom a coat-of-arms; with engraved text in three columns, wanting the engraved title. Since 1471, a firework display called the 'Girandola' was held at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, the papal fortress (originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian). The firework display was sponsored by the papacy and held when a new pope was elected or crowned, at Easter, and on 28 June (the eve of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul). Huelsen 127.
