Minimi segni del tempo e macchiette alla legatura, cerniera anteriore rinforzata, alone limitato al margine esterno delle prime carte, peraltro esemplare nel complesso in buono stato di conservazione. Innocent Gentillet (1535 ca. - 1595), avvocato calvinista francese, si rifugiò a Ginevra per motivi politico-religiosi e fu costretto abbandonare ogni carica pubblica. Convinto riformatore, si dedicò alla dottrina politica, pubblicando in francese nel 1576 uno dei primi attacchi organici al pensiero machiavelliano, divenendo quindi un precursore dell'antimachiavellismo insieme a Francois Hotman.       4to (198x140 mm). (2), 68, (2) pp. With a woodcut portrait (dated 1577) of the author at the age of 38 on the title-page and 6 woodcuts in the text, each showing 4 allegorical illustrations. Contemporary limp vellum, spine recently reinforced, endleaves renewed, small marginal stains in the first and last three leaves, uniformly slightly browned throughout, old repair in the lower outer corner of the title-page not affecting the text, a good, genuine copy.VERY RARE FIRST EDITION containing sixty-one 'canzonelle alla napolitana' presented in sequence without music. If separate music fascicles were published, no copies of it are known to have survived. As in his other publications, each of the pieces in the Opera nuova is dedicated to individual women. The choices here show him to have been well connected to some of the most prominent Lyonnais families including the Buonvisi, merchants from Lucca (cf. F. Dobbins, Lyons: Commercial and Cultural Metropolis, in: "The Renaissance. From 1470 to the End of the 16th Century", I. Fenlon, ed., London, 1989, p. 210). Orbene, la pagina del titolo di quest'Opera nuova reca anche l'incisione di un ritratto del musicista, nella diffusa prospettiva rinascimentale di tre quarti, entro una cornice ovale che specifica: 'Gasparo Fiorino musico et poeta di la citta di Rossano etatis sue XXX8'. He probably was a singer at San Marco about the middle of the sixteenth century. At the time of one of his major works, La nobiltà di Roma: versi in lode di cento gentildonne romane (Rome, 1571), he was a 'musico' in the service of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, presumably in his Roman palace and at Ferrara. He apparently lived also for a while in Venice, where he was directly acquainted to Domenico Vernier and in contact with the musician Adriano Willaert. Strong social connections also inform his two other surviving musical publications, Libro secondo di canzonelle and Libro terzo di canzonelle (both printed in Venice in 1574 and both for three and four voices). The former is dedicated to the ladies of Genoa and is the longest publication of its kind; the latter is dedicated to Giovanni Battista Doria and praises the military and naval achievements of various members of this distinguished Genoese family in its preface. The volume contains several pieces dedicated to the victors of the Battle of Lepanto (1571), including Marcantonio Colonna, the Cardinal Granvelle, and Don Juan of Austria. The word "canzonella", probably coined by Fiorino himself, no doubt was intended as a fusion of 'canzonetta' and 'villanella' (cf. A. Pugliese, Gasparo Fiorino musicista calabrese, in: "Fausto Torrefranca: l'uomo, il suo tempo, la sua opera. Atti del Convegno Internazionale di Studi Vibo Valentia, 15-17 dicembre 1983", G. This edition has however been falsely attributed to the astrologer Abu Mashar, the word Apomasaris is a corruption of the name of the famous Albumasar, or Abu Ma’shar, and Leunclavius afterwards acknowledged his mistake in attributing the work to him. Bound in 3/4 black morocco over marbled paper covered boards, flat spine with lettering and rules in gilt, marbled endpapers with matching marbled edges, head of spine with surface chip.       Extremely rare first French edition of the Portolano del Mare, usually attributed to Cadamosto (Ca da Mosto), a Venetian traveller under the service of Henry the Navigator, who discovered Cape Verde in 1455-56. The Portolano was first published in 1490, and subsequent editions were printed in the 16th century (first in 1528), often with the Consulate, and in an abridgment format, this edition is much larger, includes the full original contents, and possibly more; this is the first time the work, a virtual navigation guide to the Mediterranean and Middle East, is translated and published in French (the translation prepared by Gaspard Carentenne). The 1490 edition is virtually unobtainable, and only later Italian editions, in their abridged form appear to be common, this first French edition is exceedingly rare. It contains sailing instructions through the Mediterranean, from Gibraltar to the Levant, and was probably compiled by Alvise Cadamosto. Cadamosto, or Ca da Mosto (1432 - 1488) was a Venetian navigator and explorer in the service of Portugal´s Henry the Navigator, famous for his explorations along the West African coast in 1455 and 1456, and the discovery of the Cape Verde islands. The narrative of his exploration was published in the Paesi novamente retrovati et Novo Mondo (1507). The title page is illustrated with a large and dramatic woodcut device, taken from earlier Italian and Spanish editions of the Consulate, and later, of the Livre du Consulat, also printed by Roux in 1577, it shows two caravels sailing under the patronage of four Saints; the verso of the title page is occupied entirely by a large woodcut with the arms of France within an architectural frame. According to USTC (94358), a copy of it was printed in 1577 in Avignon, however no copy of this edition is known. Rarity: no copy seems to have appeared at auction according to Rarebookhub, and only two copies are found in libraries, that of the BNF and Amsterdam. Brunet, IV, 832 (for the 1490 edition). The globes are mounted in circular wooden yokes by threaded brass pins screwing into the yoke, the mounted on turned wooden stands, total height on stand 400mm, gores with small areas of surface loss skillfully infilled. Publication This extremely rare set of late Renaissance Italian globes was the work of the cartographer, engraver, publisher and print merchant Mario Cartaro (1540-1620). In 1560, Cartaro was working in Rome, where he produced his first known engraving, a print in reverse after a drawing by Heinrich Aldegrever. In the following years Cartaro was associated with the celebrated cartographer and publisher Antonio Lafreri (1512-1577), and his engravings may be found in two of Lafreri's composite publications: 'Speculum romanae magnificentiae' and 'Tavole moderne di geografia'. In 1586 Cartaro moved to Naples, and in 1589 he was appointed cartographer to the Giunta de Regi Lagni, holding the position until his death in 1620. Cartaro was also an important figure in the history of Italian globe-making. In the first half of the sixteenth century, the only globes produced in Italy were either manuscript globes or engraved metal globes. Cartaro's terrestrial globe of 1577 was the first dated printed globe to be made in Italy (the brothers Livio and Giulio Sanuto had produced an earlier, undated terrestrial globe with engraved gores around the period 1564-1574), and the accompanying celestial globe was the first celestial globe with printed gores to be produced in Italy. These globes are celebrated for the restrained delicacy, precision, and beauty of their engraving, which is reminiscent of Lafreri's work, and Suarez comments that, "the engraving quality is typical of the finest Italian makers, for whom elegance and clarity were overriding concerns, and superfluous decoration avoided", and Shirley judges that "the twelve gores [.] with their stippled oceans and minimal decorations, are in execution among the best Italian work of the era", whilst Raymond Lister identifies Cartaro as one of the most "important sixteenth-century globe-makers" working in Italy (Old Maps and Globes (London: 1979), p. 78). Geography The terrestrial globe is based on Giacomo Gastaldi's xylographic world map of circa 1561, and it is thus the first dated globe to show the mythical Strait of Anian separating America and Asia, and the first dated globe to name Canada, following Gastaldi, who first showed these features. However, Cartaro also updated Gastaldi's cartography where he could use more recent surveys and explorations – for example, he correctly marks New Guinea as an island, which Gastaldi did not. The terrestrial globe is known in two states, and this example is (like that described by Suarez) in the later state, with North America extending deep into the polar circle and two lakes appearing in the continent, the more northerly marked 'Cani' (i.e. Lake Conibas). The celestial globe is derived from Gemma Frisius' celestial globe of c1537, and the stylized pictorial constellations are similar in form and design to those on Frisius' globe, which, in turn, are mainly derived from Albrecht Dürer's 1515 xylographic charts of the northern and southern celestial hemispheres, 'Imagines coeli se [Attributes: Signed Copy]

An interesting and rare manuscript of economic nature from Phillip II of Spain; ordering and stressing the prohibition of removing gold and silver from the colonies unless expressly allowed. These "cedulas" or edicts were sent to the different posts of administration of the Americas and Philippines for information purposes. Phillip II (1527 - 1598) had one of the vastest kingdoms known under his rule (1556 - 1598) as King of Spain, Portugal, Naples, Sicily, the Seventeen Provinces, etc. This enormous empire was centralized, thus every order came from mainland Spain and was to be executed by the colonial administration. The corruption was considerable as to some extent the Monarchy was unable to have absolute control being thousands of miles away; it had to trust the "adelantados" and locals "criollos". The manuscript continues: Resuelva? Que en muy pocos días se saca y desaparece la mayor parte dello lo qual según se ha hecho relación entre otras causas proceden principalmente, de que algunas... que por cedulas mias tienen o vienen dice ... mi para sacar alguna cantidad de dinero (oro y plata) usando de diversas cutelas, y modos y soploz?          Letter from the King of Spain recommending the reading of astronomical texts to update Saint Isidorus´ encyclopedia

      Very rare and desirable letter from the King of Spain Philip II to the Church of Toledo recommending the reading of an Astronomy text to complete and correct the undergoing project on the works of Saint Isidorus of Seville, stressing the argument that works of such academicism should not be lost. The King asks for hastiness, and requests for the books to be delivered back after being used by the Church, introducing his Guardajoyas Hernando de Briviesca as the person in charge of receiving them. Philip II (1527 - 1598) besides being one of the most powerful kings of the Western World, was a renown bibliophile, who spent a considerable portion of his life overseeing the building of the Escorial; the building houses a magnificent library, the first of its kind in Spain -easily recognizable by the disposition of its books, which are set with the spines facing the walls. His interest for the cultural development of Spain was heavily influenced by the Church´s teachings, and thus remained somewhat delayed in comparison to the rest of Europe; a letter such as this tells us that Philip was personally involved in academic writings. Rare first and only edition of a pharmacopoeia for the benefit of the poor of the Dutch city of Leiden, authorized by the city's council. The work is said to have been initiated by Otto Heurnius (1577-1652), a Dutch physician who became professor of medicine at the University of Leiden. It lists simple medicines ("simplicia") and compound medicines ("composita"), together with some brief comments on the ingredients and the preparations of the medicines. "Remedies for the patients in the Caecilia Hospital [Leiden] were in accordance with the prescriptions in this ‘poor-pharmacopoeia'" (Beukers).Very slightly browned, with minor thumbing on the first and last page and a few small spots. Otherwise in very good condition.

First edition of a richly illustrated work comprising all the works, that had then been published, of Jacob Cats (1577-1660), one of the greatest poets and humourists of the Dutch golden age and one of its greatest statesmen. Although he published nothing until he was forty years old, he was very prolific for the rest of his long life. He wrote for a broad public, and many of his works were illustrated with emblematic copperplates by the greatest Dutch artists, especially Adriaen van de Venne, responsible for many plates in the present edition. The book includes Cats's Proteus, of Sinne- en minnebeelden (1618), Houwelyck (1625) Spiegel (1631) and many more. Works like these delivered him the name "father Cats", due to the educational and pedagogical character of his texts.The binding can be ascribed to the so-called "star bindery". "The bindery was situated in The Hague and had a wide clientele, within and (far) outside the town" (Storm van Leeuwen) and is known for its prize and presentation bindings, including several presented to William V, Prince of Orange or members of his family. With some tears in the outer margins, not affecting the text or illustrations, occasional spots and marginal thumbing, lower margin of pages 123-130 of Buyten-leven op Sorghvliet damaged: otherwise good. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise in very good condition.

      1577 - Serie completa di 4 incisioni al bulino, 1577 circa. Da disegni Jan van der Straet, lat. Johannes Stradanus. Esemplari nel primo stato di due, con l’excudit di Philips Galle. I Novissimi, dal latino Quattuor Novissima, secondo la teologia cattolica rappresentano gli ultimi quattro eventi che accadranno all’Uomo al termine della vita: la Morte, il Giudizio, Il Paradiso o l’Inferno. Le quattro incisioni, di formato ovale, sono tutte basate su disegni del celebre artista fiammingo Jan van der Straet, noto come Stradanus. Dopo aver completato la propria formazione ad Anversa, nel 1545 partì alla volta dell’Italia, ma mantenne sempre rapporti con la città di provenienza, inviando i suoi disegni che, tradotti in incisioni, venivano pubblicati soprattutto da Philips Galle. Nel 1577, il maestro di H. Goltzius, Dirck V. Coornhert, presentò il suo allievo a Galle: questa suite, dunque, è tra le prime opere dell’artista olandese. Ciascuna scena è spiegata dai versetti in latino che la circondano, presi dalla Prima Lettera di S. Paolo Apostolo ai Corinzi e/o dal Vangelo secondo Matteo. La PRIMA TAVOLA della serie, inscritta in lastra, in basso nell’immagine, "Johannes Stradanus invetor/Phls Galle Excud.", raffigura La resurrezione dei morti, così come descritto nei due versetti che circondano l’immagine: "in momento in ictu oculi in novissima tuba canet enim et mortui resurgent incorrupti et nos inmutabimur" (Corinzi, 15.52) "in un istante, in un batter d’occhio, al suono dell’ultima tromba. Essa infatti suonerà e i morti risorgono incorruttibili e noi saremo trasformati". L’umanità è rappresentata principalmente dalle tre figure femminili in primo piano, che rispecchiano in pieno lo stile manierista, con le teste piccole e i corpi allungati.       1577 - Bulino, 1577, firmato e datato in lastra in basso al centro. Da un soggetto di Jacopo Zanguidi detto il Bertoja. Esemplare nel secondo stato di quattro con l’indirizzo dell’editore Lorenzo Vaccari. Bellissima prova, ricca di toni, impressa su carta vergata coeva priva di filigrana, rifilata al rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. L’opera traduce in rame un dipinto del Bertoja andato perduto, come descritto da De Grazia. In precedenza, l’errata attribuzione dell’iscrizione Iacobus parmen. Inven, aveva fatto risalire l’opera ad un dipinto di Jacopo Palma. Manfred Sellink descrive un solo esemplare di primo stato, a Berlino, andato perduto durante la seconda Guerra Mondiale. Engraving, 1577, signed and dated at lower center. After Jacopo Zanguidi called Bertoja. Example of the second state of four with the address of the publisher Lorenzo Vaccari. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, in very god conditions. The work translates a lost painting of Bertoja, as described by De Grazia. Previously, the erroneous attribution, had traced the work after a painting by Jacopo Palma. Manfred Sellink describes a single copy of the first state, in Berlin, that was lost during the Second World War. The description and chronicles of Yrelande, likewise from the firste originall of that nation, vntill the yeare. 1547. Faithfully gathered and set forth, by Raphaell Holinshed. Arthur Satrey's ownership inscription in old ink dated 27 February 1577 on dedication leaf and John Harding's ownership inscription dated 1678 in upper margin of title to second part. FIRST EDITION, VOLUME I ONLY OF TWO, 1577, (Volume II continued the history of England to the reign of Elizabeth I). Small folio, slightly trimmed copy, 285 x 190 mm, 11¼ x 7½ inches, bound in eights, each of the 3 parts has its own decorated title page showing a mermaid, lion heads, fruit and plants, an angel at the top and beneath 1577, at the foot "God save the Queene", text in black letter in 2 columns, over 500 woodcuts in the text of various sizes, plus large historiated initials, leaves: [9], 1-126, (last page misnumbered 124), pages: 1-289, [1]; [8], 1-22, lacks blank, 1-518, [26] ; leaves: [4], 1-28; pages: 1-115, [8 of 9]; lacks page of faults, bound in full blind stamped calf, rebacked at sometime keeping early covers. Binding rubbed and with repairs, slight loss to head of spine, hinges cracked and weak, , covers still firmly attached, inner hinges strengthened, first title page has margins neatly trimmed and is laid down on old paper, with Holinshed's coat of arms pasted to blank side, tear with loss to the lower margin of page 57 in the Scottish part, with loss to three lines on either side, and a tear to outer margin of page 97 with slight loss to side notes but not affecting main text, loss to tip of a few corners nowhere near text, minor light damp staining to about 30 pages, Porkington library bookplate to first pastedown, some old ink annotations and underlining in an early hand, mostly to upper margins of the "History of England", a small burn hole to centre margin of leaf 4, a few other minor stains and marks but overall a very good clean copy. The 3 sections on the 3 countries are divided into a description of the country plus its history. Woodcuts appear on most pages, there are small portraits of kings and queens, many large 2 column cuts of varying height, battle scenes, sieges, towns ablaze, duels, cruel punishments, a guillotine, warships, hunting, court and street scenes, building churches, harvesting; many repeated, some several times. Solida legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida con nervi passanti e titoli ms. al dorso. Sguardie antiche, ma verosimilmente rimesse, piccoli aloni marginali. Complessivamente esemplare genuino ed in ottimo stato di conservazione. Edizione originale ed unica di quest'interessante testo dedicato prevalentemente alla peste e che ben s'inserisce nella schiera di trattati del tempo che affrontavano l'argomento (Massaria, Silvatico, ecc). In esso Alfano si distingue per una particolare descrizione delle petecchie (pur senza nominarle esplicitamente). Quest'ultimo fu medico ed accademico, nacque a Salerno nel 1020 ed ivi morì nel 1085.

Modern vellum over stiff boards. A very copy overall, small wormholes to first leaves, lightly browned. 24,000 $ Extremely rare first French edition of the Portolano del Mare, usually attributed to Cadamosto (Ca da Mosto), a Venetian traveller under the service of Henry the Navigator, who discovered Cape Verde in 1455-56. The Portolano was first published in 1490, and subsequent editions were printed in the 16th century (first in 1528), often with the Consulate, and in an abridgment format, this edition is much larger, includes the full original contents, and possibly more; this is the first time the work, a virtual navigation guide to the Mediterranean and Middle East, is translated and published in French (the translation prepared by Gaspard Carentenne). The 1490 edition is virtually unobtainable, and only later Italian editions, in their abridged form appear to be common, this first French edition is exceedingly rare. It contains sailing instructions through the Mediterranean, from Gibraltar to the Levant, and was probably compiled by Alvise Cadamosto. L'editor è stato pubblicato lo stesso anno queste lezioni Antoine Verdier a seguito di lezioni che Pietro Messia ristampato così lo stesso anno. Edizione Rare assente da Brunet (che evoca una edizione del 1584) e Graesse. Harness (catalogo Lione impressioni 16) comunica che copia il nome del Honorat sono molto rare. Assente il BN Francia. Un ritratto medaglione nel libro di Antoine Verdier. Edizioni in caratteri piccoli. XVIII pelle di pecora pieno, di nuovo nervo. Tappo superiore che porta una lacrima, la mancanza in coda copricapo. Vari attriti. La seconda parte è tagliati corti e un po 'di pregiudizi. Pedro Mexia (1496-1552) scrittore spagnolo, francesizzato Pietra Messia aveva una buona reputazione per il suo lavoro di variazione lección Silva, una compilazione enciclopedica di cui la prima edizione pubblicata a Siviglia nel 1540. Gruget Claude ha dato la prima traduzione francese nel 1552 . L'éditeur fit paraître la même année ces leçons d'Antoine Verdier comme une suite aux leçons de Pierre Messie qu'il réimprima de ce fait la même année. Rare édition absente de Brunet (qui n'évoque qu'une édition de 1584) et Graesse. Baudrier (catalogue des impressions lyonnaises du XVIe) annonce que les exemplaires au nom d'Honorat sont fort rares. Absent à la BN de France. Un portrait en médaillon dans le livre d'Antoine Verdier. Editions à petits caractères. Reliure en pleine basane XVIIIe, dos à nerf. Coiffe supérieure portant une déchirure, manque en coiffe de queue. Frottements divers. La deuxième partie est rognée un peu court et de biais. Pedro Mexia (1496-1552) auteur espagnol, francisé en Pierre Messie eut une grande renommée grâce à son ouvrage Silva de varia leccion, une compilation encyclopédique dont la première édition parue à Séville en 1540. Claude Gruget en donna la première traduction française en 1552. Les Leçons de Du Verdier sont basées sur le même principe, consistant dans un recueil de diverses matières savantes et toujours curieuses, Les deux recueils brillent par leurs éruditions, couvrant des sujets aussi variés que les turcs ou le mariage, le vin, ou l'acte vénérien (le mal de Naples). Ce type d'ouvrage, accumulant histoire, science, géographie, alchimie et autres disciplines est tout à fait caractéristique de l'approche savante au XVIe siècle, non seulement du point de vue populaire, mais également scientifique.
