The title is displayed in a decorative cartouche featuring a stag and hound. London is shown in pictorial form and numerous coats of arms add greatly to the visual appeal. Enhanced with early hand colour which remains bright and fresh. Latin text verso.  Some mount burn to the margins can be seen where previously framed, which would of course be masked when remounting/matting. A small closed tear has been professionally repaired verso, barely discernable on the face of the map. Centre fold as issued. A crisp, dark impression. The heavy grade hand laid paper remains robust and stable.  Approx. 20" x 16" (500mm x 410mm) map area only, with good margins beyond. Please see also close up images.Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571 -1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the mapmaking industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan (Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas  "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive, Atlas Novus", which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635 - 1662. This is one of the first books to be published in the New World, a Spanish-Nahuatl dictionary issued 50 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. First published in 1555 with only Spanish-to-Nahuatl translations, it is here expanded to translate the Aztec words into Spanish. Alonso de Molina (ca. 1513-85) was born in Spain but immigrated to Mexico by 1523, and quickly learned the indigenous language, Nahuatl. In 1528, he entered the Franciscan convent in Mexico City, and became a friar devoted to converting Mexicans to Christianity. He put together his dictionary to assist his brothers in Christ in communicating their message to the natives, both in sermons and in the confessional, but its value went much further: it is still considered an essential resource for linguists studying Nahuatl. According to modern scholar James Lockhart, "the coverage, authenticity, and correctness of the work are astounding. . . . Molina went far beyond utilitarian basics to include a vast range of vocabulary, making many subtle semantic and grammatical distinctions." As a frequently consulted reference work that saw heavy use, extant copies of the work are found in very worn condition, and most often, as here, incomplete. Our copy lacks the first half of the "A" entries from Spanish to Nahuatl, and the entries for the last part of V, and all of X, Y and Z. Filippo Decio (1454-1535), celebre commentatore civilista e canonista, insegnò a Pisa, Pavia, Siena, Padova e Roma. Ebbe come discepoli uomini di grandezza indiscussa come Leone X, Cesare Borgia e soprattutto Francesco Guicciardini. Questi commentari sulle regole di diritto civile rappresentarono un punto di riferimento non solo per la dottrina strettamente giuridica, ma divennero ben presto modello per chi al diritto s"avvicinava senza spirito tecnicista e piuttosto con finalità politiche. Ex-libris nobiliare ottocentesco al contropiatto Riccardi de Vernaccia (si tratta probabilmente del marchese Francesco Maria Riccardi del Vernaccia (1794-1863), che fu autore fra l'altro di memorie di agricoltura, su Dante, su Girolamo Segato, ecc. Prima edizione, seconda tiratura (esistono frontespizi con date oscillanti tra il 1570 e il 1572 ma l'edizione è la stessa), completa della parte separata con l'Oratione del Menechini, spesso mancante. Il Dolce (Venezia, 1508-ivi, 1568), poligrafo dall'ingente produzione, amico di Tiziano e dell'Aretino, compose drammi, poemi, liriche di stampo bembiano, satire, capitoli, trattati sulla pittura, la lingua e le belle arti, e fu autore di numerosi commenti e traduzioni per il Giolito de'Ferrari. Nella sua ingente produzione questo poema epico in ottave occupa una posizione preminente; in esso la rivisitazione dell'epica greca e romana dà vita a un singolare pastiche in cui la narrazione dell'Iliade si fonde con la materia epico-narrativa dell'Eneide.       Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ( - 1638) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1662 1571 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 42 x 53; - description: Map shows Gothia; -vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing presses running simultaneously, and in 1667 a second press was acquired at Gravenstraat. At the same time as producing the Atlas Maior, Blaeu was also publishing town plans of Italy, maps for globes, and other volumes. At its peak the Blaeu press managed to produce over 1 million impressions from 1,000 copper plates within four years.

      - From the Worship of Luke (24:13-27) Christ appears to his disciples leading them to Emmaus. Mirrored version in respect to that engraved by Philips Galle in 1571 in two states (New Hollstein 6). Text underneath has been cut out. From Piero Zani (1822) we aknowledge the whole inscription which reads: "P. Breughel inuentor. Dominus Vitus ordinis Vallisumbrosae Monacus excude. Romae ann.[D. 1576. / Christus peregrini dignaris sumere formam / Ut firma solides pectora nostra fide.]". The Monk Vito is known for having turned into prints some maps of the Tuscan region between 1574 and 1578. In the present print he added the sun and the moon on the top left. Very rare engraving, no margins, text missing, some damages on the low left corner, some ink stains on the shoulder of the left apostle; total: 222 x 167 mm PB01NT

Leaders like Luther, Calvin, and Melanchthon played a role essential to the Reformation in both legend and reality in interpreting the Bible for its readers; yet while (like the others) he championed the reading of the Scriptures in the vernacular, Calvin chose to present his notes on and explanations of various books of the Bible in the language of scholars — Latin. In other words, effectively, he still expected the mass of believers to => rely on the intermediation of the clergy to assist them; but his works were => placed on the Index nonetheless, including this book, one of his many exegeses of the Old Testament.    The Latin text here is printed in roman and italic with intermittent Hebrew, with decorative woodcut initials throughout. The title-page features the => large printer's device of Bartholomew Vincent. Curiously, most library records for this edition give Geneva as the place of printing, which is wrong. No place is given in the book itself; Vincentius, however, never printed anywhere except in Lyons. Thus, this is the first printing of the Latin text outside of Geneva, for the 1561, 1562, and 1569 edition all appeared there (the 1570 edition was an English-language translation from a London press).    Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of lawyer and historian Guido Kisch (1889–1985, son of Rabbi Alexander Kisch and brother of medical historian Dr. Bruno Kisch), with inked inscription beneath: "Letztes Geburtstagsgeschenk des M. Bruno, '75.         Adams C302; Index Aurel. 130.118. Contemporary vellum, spine with early hand-inked title replacing now-absent title-label; worn, especially at extremities, and cocked with vellum split over front joint (sewing holding) and front cover with insect holes. Endpapers slightly ragged; one internal blank leaf lacking. Some corners bumped; pages age-toned with occasional spotting and staining. => A used but very usable copy, with interesting provenance.

Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing presses running simultaneously, and in 1667 a second press was acquired at Gravenstraat. At the same time as producing the Atlas Maior, Blaeu was also publishing town plans of Italy, maps for globes, and other volumes. At its peak the Blaeu press managed to produce over 1 million impressions from 1,000 copper plates within four years.

These are the complete works by the Latin lyric poet Horace (Horatius) (65 – 8 BC), on the title page referred to as "facile princeps." His work has had a significant impact on the development of poetry in Europe. In 38 BC Horatius was admitted to the literary circle around Maecenas, after he was introduced by Virgil (Vergillius). Horatius was inspired by Greek examples (especially the archaic poets such as Sappho). He rises above the level of his predecessors though by his content and style. Horace’s style is distinguished by a large variety of serious and solemn language to almost everyday speech. His use of words is very precise and therefore his formulation always fits perfectly. For every ode in this publication the meter is chanted (bij elke ode wordt het metrum gescandeerd). This is a reprint of the edition that was published in 1554 by Antoine Vincent Lyon. In the colophon Symphorianus Barbier was listed as the printer of this publication. Rare edition.

      - Hale, Girolamo Maggi, in: Italian studies XL, 1, pp. 31-150. Second edition printed in Amsterdam, annotated and richly illustrated, of two works by the Italian scholar Girolamo Maggi, previously published separately, and originally written while incarcerated in Constantinople in 1571-1572. The author had been able to smuggle in some books and from these started writing De tintinnabulis, the first study on bells in history. Most of the book is dedicated to the history of the use of bells in classical antiquity and in the Islamic world, but a single chapter is devoted to the carillons in the Netherlands. Maggi describes the effect the carillon in Antwerp had on the city's inhabitants, with people jumping around and dancing in their houses and on the squares. Finally he laments the absence of this art form in Italy.During the writing of this treatise, Maggi's books had been taken from him. Subsequently he found inspiration to write a study of the equuleus, an instrument of torture from antiquity used "especially during the Christian persecutions. But was it a sharp-backed wooden horse on which a man was forced to sit while heavy weights were attached to his legs? Or was it not like a horse but like a pyramid? Or was it form of rack?" (Hale) The treatises were sent to the Holy Roman and French ambassadors in Constantinople in a request for aid. Nevertheless Maggi was strangled after an attempted escape, with the treatises being published posthumously in Hanau in 1608-1609.With an owner's inscription dated 1742 and a few marks on the title-page. Binding worn at the extremities and with some damage to the paper on the covers. Engraved title slightly soiled but otherwise a very good copy.

         Christ and his disciples on the way to Emmaus

      From the Worship of Luke (24:13-27) Christ appears to his disciples leading them to Emmaus. Mirrored version in respect to that engraved by Philips Galle in 1571 in two states (New Hollstein 6). Text underneath has been cut out. From Piero Zani (1822) we aknowledge the whole inscription which reads: "P. Breughel inuentor. Dominus Vitus ordinis Vallisumbrosae Monacus excude. Romae ann.[D. 1576. / Christus peregrini dignaris sumere formam / Ut firma solides pectora nostra fide.]". The Monk Vito is known for having turned into prints some maps of the Tuscan region between 1574 and 1578. In the present print he added the sun and the moon on the top left. Las innumerables españolas tenían su precisa explicación en la licencia general otorgada por Felipe II el 12 de julio de 1564, donde decía que ?habiéndonos su santidad enviado los Decretos del dicho santo concilio impresos en forma auténtica, Nos, como católico rey, y obediente y verdadero hijo de la iglesia, queriendo satisfacer y corresponder a la obligación en que somos (.) aceptamos y recibimos el dicho sacrosanto concilio, y queremos que en estos nuestros Reynos sea guardado, cumplido y executado (.) La orden fue seguida de inmediato y antes de acabar el año el resultado del Concilio había sido publicado ya por al menos once imprentas diferentes de Alcalá de Henares (2), Barcelona, Granada, Valencia, Valladolid (2), Zaragoza y, claro, Salamanca (2), en algunos casos con varias emisiones antes de acabar el año. Uno de los dos talleres que lo hizo en Salamanca fue el de los Terranova, quienes incluso incorporaron a su edición la carta a los lectores con la que el impresor Paulo Manuncio abrió la primera edición oficial romana. Sin embargo, siete años más tarde, después de cuatro ediciones, los Terranova publicaron en 1571 una versión diferente a las suyas anteriores y a las de las demás imprentas, que seguían reproduciendo sin variaciones la versión oficial romana. La edición elegida en esta ocasión por los Terranova fue la que, preparada por Orazio Luzi (1541-1569), había impreso Ziletti en Venecia en 1566. Es posible que la edición fuese un encargo, pero si no lo fue, con la elección, los Terranova habrían demostrado tener una visión acertada, puesto que la de Luzi se convertiría en una de las presentaciones del Concilio más difundidas por numerosas imprentas de toda Europa. En favor del encargo , en cambio, pesa que la edición de la versión de Luzi contaba con una autorización española, como queda recogido en el impreso de los Terranova. Ese es el primer motivo de curiosidad: que siendo un impreso de Salamanca presenta una licencia dada por Alva [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
