      nella Bottega d'Erasmo di Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1549. Cm. 16, cc. (8) 229 (1). Marchio tipografico al frontespizio e capolettara figurati. Solida legatura d'inizio '700 in piena pelle, dorso a piccoli nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro. Qualche rara macchietta e mende non gravi alle ultime due carte, peraltro esemplare molto ben conservato. Edizione originale, non comune, di questa raccolta di questioni che abbracciano tutto lo scibile umano, soprattutto nei suoi aspetti più curiosi.

It is a 'Curieux traité, où l'auteur aborde un grand nombre de problèmes concernant la vie scolaire et universitaire' (Dictionnaire de Droit Canonique, Paris 1965, vii, col.477). The author had studied at Montpellier, Toulouse, and Cahors, where he took his doctorate in utroque jure. In 1527 he was teaching at Poitiers, in 1529 in Bourges, and in 1533 in Paris, where he was one of six doctors regent appointed to lecture on canon law. He pub­lished on some of the most vexed and sensitive legal questions of his day, including treatises on the law concerning ecclesiastical benefices, the rights of pos­session, royal duties and prerogatives, war, and the lordship of castles. The work is divided in three parts: 'Scolasticorum priuilegiorum', 180 in number (pp.1‒384); 'Scolastica necessarium', or 'De His quae necessaria sunt literarum studiosis', 12 in number (pp.385‒420); and 'De interpretatione autenticae constitutionis habita' (pp.421‒567). Melanchthon's postils, a collection of sermons following the liturgical calendar, are distinguished for their clarity and simplicity. They were assembled by his students to whom he had explicated them and proved very influential amongst university educated clerics, as well as pastors with rudimentary reading skills in Latin, contributing to sermons that they eventually composed and delivered. For those less educated, the first German translation appeared in 1545. Both the Latin and the German edition went through a considerable number of reprints and like Luther's postils Melanchthon's became one of the bestsellers of the sixteenth century. - Owner's inscription on title page, single wormhole in first hundred leaves, some contemporary underlinings and marginal annotations.

Antico rinforzo al margine esterno del frontespizio che si presenta un po' frastagliato, segni di tarlo limitati al margine esterno di poche carte, sporadiche fioriture e bruniture, qualche alone sparso. Esemplare nel complesso genuino e in discreto stato di conservazione. Etienne Forcadel (1519 ca.-1578) spesso menzionato per lo "scontro" con Cujas nell'assegnazione di una cattedra a Tolosa, fu un giurista di spicco nell'ambito dell'umanesimo giuridico francese. Quest'opera, caratterizzata da un titolo curioso e un po' pretenzioso, si traduce in una sorta di elogio/esegesi del diritto romano classico fondata sul dialogo immaginario tra i più grandi giureconsulti dell'antichità. Alcune interessanti annotazioni di mano coeva, lieve alone nella parte finale del libro, sporadiche fioriture/arrossature e alcune macchiette, peraltro nel complesso buon esemplare. Luigi Alamanni (1595-1556) letterato fiorentino, deve la sua fama proprio al poema Coltivazione. Implicato nella congiura del 1522 contro Giulio de' Medici, l'A. fu costretto a ripiegare in Francia, anche se tornò in Italia per alcune missioni diplomatiche al servizio della politica francese. Quest'opera, divisa in sei libri e scritta a imitazione delle Georgiche di Virgilio, fu dedicata al re Francesco I, a cui fu presentata dalla delfina Caterina de' Medici. Terza edizione. Cfr.       In Vinetia, appresso Gabriel Giolito di Ferrari 1549 - Cm. 15, cc. (8) 111 (1). Magnifico marchio tip. giolitino a frontespizio e colophon, alcuni graziosi capilettera xil. Antica nota manoscritta di possesso alla sguardia del conte veronese Leonardo Miniscalchi. Legatura settecentesca in pieno cartonato rigido con titoli in oro su tassello in pelle al dorso; tagli spruzzati. Qualche sporadico e piccolo alone. Esemplare ben conservato. Pietro Valeriano (1477-1558), umanista originario di Belluno nato come Giovanni Pietro Bolzani Dalla Fosse, fu nipote dell'illustre grecista Urbano Dalle Fosse che nel 1493 lo introdusse nel circolo di Aldo Manuzio a Venezia. Qui ebbe come maestri Valla, Lascaris e Sabellico, che gli suggerì di adottare il nome di Pierio Valeriano. Nel 1509 si trasferì a Roma, dove divenne un protetto di papa Leone X, che gli affidò l'istruzione dei nipoti Ippolito e Alessandro. Nel 1537, in seguito alla morte di Clemente VII e di Ippolito e Alessandro de' Medici, si ritirò a Belluno, per dedicarsi agli studi e alla redazione degli Hieroglyphica, opera considerata il suo capolavoro. I cinque libri degli Amori, scritti in versi elegiaci, furono composti nel 1524 e rimasero a lungo inediti. Il sesto libro raccoglie invece quattro operette giovanili già apparse a Venezia nel 1509 con il titolo di Praeludia. Tutti i componimenti poetici, rilevanti per l'ottimo stile e per le molte notizie contenute, sono dedicati ad alcuni protagonisti della vita intellettuale dell'epoca: Isabella Gonzaga, Bembo, Beroaldo, Fracastoro, Sabellico, Sannazaro, ecc. Rare first edition of one of Gelli's most influential works, his vernacular dialogue on man's condition, often regarded as his masterpiece. The ten dialogues are based on the Homeric legend of the witch Circe who transformed Ulysses' companions into a variety of animals - ranging from an oyster to an elephant. Ulysses persuades her to change them back into human beings but only the elephant, formerly a philosopher, returns to his former state as he alone recognises man's freedom and dignity. In the work the self-taught Gelli reveals a remarkable range of sources from Homer, Ovid, Plutarch, Pliny and Aristotle to humanists such as Ficino, Pomponazzi and Pico della Mirandola. There were three translations into English from the 16th to 18th centuries (first translated by Henry Iden, 1557) and it may have influenced Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726).The self-taught Florentine poet, thinker, playwright and critic Gelli (1498-1563) trained as a shoemaker, but although of humble birth, he later became a member of the Florentine Academy and was given the title Riformatore della lingua. With over one hundred editions until the end of the 16th century (including translations and adaptations), the 'Colloquies' became Erasmus' most printed work.The Colloquia grew from their earliest form of short models of Latin conversation and formulae of etiquette (composed for the use of Erasmus' pupils at Paris in 1497 and first printed without his authorization at Basel in 1518 and again edited by Erasmus himself in March 1522) into a rich and motley collection of dialogues, each a masterpiece of literary form. Full of witty and penetrating information on ordinary day-to-day happenings, they are a valuable mine of information about 16th-century customs, institutions and social problems. The work also became a vehicle of social criticism and, as such, the focus of controversy (cf. E. Rummel, Les Colloques d'Érasme: renouveau spiritual et réforme, Paris, 1998, passim).The Colloquia were prohibited in various unofficial Indices since the late 1540s not only for their "Lutheran" ideas but also for being considered morally corrupt. The index of Paul IV (1559) condemned all of Erasmus' works, but the index of the Council of Trent (1564) permitted their publication in expurgated form. However, Lauro's Italian translations were nevertheless prohibited (cf. P. Grendler, The Roman Inquisition and the Venetian Press, 1540-1605, Princeton, NJ, 1977, p. 166).For his translation Lauro certainly used or the definitive edition of the Colloquia printed in March 1533 or slightly later one. His aim was to give to his unlearned readers the very essence of the Colloquia, what let him to cut most of the didactic parts ("formulae") and some erudite disquisitions (mostly philological). He translated however all the major colloquies in their integrity. In the present revised edition Lauro's name has been omitted (for fear of retaliatory measures of the Holy Office?). The dedication to Renée de France (cf. E. Belligni, Evangelismo, riforma ginevrina e nicodemismo: l'esperienza religiosa di Renata di Francia, Cosenza, 2008, p. 247) had been maintained in its entirety and is followed by Erasmus' vindication of the Colloquia with a slightly different title (see below). As early as 1522 Erasmus was defending the purposes of his Colloquia, especially against the assaults led by the Carmelite Nicholaas Baechem. By May 1526, his enemies in the faculty of theology at Paris, who had been complaining about him for several years, succeeded in carrying a motion of censure against the Colloquia. A few weeks before the faculty acted, Erasmus chose to defend his work in a letter to the bishop of Lincoln, John Longland (April 30, 1526). A revised version of this apology was then published under the title De utilitate colloquiorum ('On the Usefulness of the Colloquies', dated May 21, 1526) at the end of Familiarium colloquiorum opus, printed at Basel by Froben in June of the same year. He was born around 1510 in Modena and probably made medical studies in Bologna or Padua, considering the many translations of medical works he did during his career. In the 1540s he moved to Venice, attracted by the growing possibilities offered in the printing business. As a schoolmaster, he taught Greek and Latin and at the same time collaborated with several local typographers especially as a translator. The relationships Lauro had with several figures close to the Evangelical movement, like Ortensio Lando, Lucrezia Gonzaga and Renée de France, and the many letters addressed to German correspondents (all found in his letter collections, published in 1552 and 1560), testify to his sympathy for the Lutheran doctrines (cf. S. Seidel Menchi, Erasmus als Ketzer: Reformation und Inquisition im Italien des 16. Jahrhunderts, Leiden & New York, 1992, pp. 435, 467). The year after the publication of the translation of the Colloquia, he completely disappeared from the literary scene in Venice to re-emerge only in 1549. Among the many works he translated in Italian stand out the De inventoribus rerum by Polidoro Virgili (1543), De officio mariti by Juan Luis Vives (1546), and Leon Battista Alberti's De re aedificatoria (1546). From Spanish he translated numerous devotional works by Luis de Granada and Antonio de Guevara. Lauro died at Venice after 1568 (cf. G. Dini, Pietro Lauro, in: "Dizionario biografico degli italiani", vol. 64, Rome, 2005, pp. 119-122).The printer Vincenzo Valgrisi (Vincent Vaugris) was originally from Lyon, and moved to Venice in the late 1530s, where he was active until 1573. In 1559, when all of Erasmus' works were put on the index of Paul IV, probably under pressure of the Venetian Holy Office, Valgrisi dropped the designation 'Ex officina Erasmiana' or 'Nella Bottega d'Erasmo' ('In Erasmus' workshop') from his title-pages and colophons (cf. It became a great success right from its first appearance in 1549 and was reprinted twenty-one times until the end of the century (cf. G. Voss, Christoph Stummel: "Studentes, comoedia de vita studiosorum', in: "Jahresbericht über das Königliche Kaiser-Wilhelms-Gymnasium zu Aachen für das Schuljahr 1898/99", Aachen, 1899, p. 1-12). At the end of the volume is printed a long poem by Stymmelius Iudicium Paridis.In his comedy Stymmelius introduces three young students on the stage: the assiduous Philomates, and two of his idle fellows, Acolastus and Acrates, who are going to spent their time and money with girls and gambling. Though the plot is not really original and Stymmelius sporadically borrowed from Gulielmus Gnaphaeus' Acolastus (1526), nevertheless Stymmelius' comedy is very im-portant for giving a vivid and faithful picture of the students' life in a German university of the six-teenth century, and furthermore expressing the educational intention of its author (cf. K.G. Konrad, Die deutsche Studentenschaft in ihrem Verhältnis zu Bühne und Drama, Berlin, 1912, pp. 74-77; see also W.F. Michael, Das deutsche Drama der Reformationszeit, Bern, 1984, pp. 104-106; and C. Als wir des Trinkens satt geworden, ging es auf den Markt. Zuerst kam uns entgegen ein ungeheurer Gnotenschwarm, der mit gezückten Schwertern auf uns sich stürzte. Da schlugen wir mit mutigem Sinn, dass sie besiegt uns endlich den Rücken zeigten, viele auch so schwer verwundet, dass kaum noch Lebenshoffnung übrig ist. Bald durch den Lärm gerufen, stürzte sich auf uns der Wache Schar, in Waffen blitzend. Auch diese wurde in die Flucht gejagt. Traun, vor Lachen wäre ich fast gestorben, als die, denen noch das Heil der Stadt vertraut ist, so schändlich flohen'. Stymmels Stück fand über-grossen Beifall. The woodcut on p. 782 is a small map on which Libya with Carthage and the Nile are visible but placed far to near each other. Strabo (c. 63 BC-21 AD.) was a Greek geographer whose only fully preserved work is this extraordinarily valuable geography in 17 books. A trip around the Eastern Mediterranean territories gave him firsthand knowledge of these areas, which he could use in his geographical description, which also contains information on literature, cultural history, medicine and natural history. Besides his own experiences Strabo based his work on earlier authors such as Eratosthenes, Poseidonios and others. The first books cover Western Europe, Britain, Gaul, Britanny, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. Book seven describes the northeastern parts of Europe while books nine and ten deal with Greece. The descriptions of Asia begin in book eleven with the main emphasis on the Middle East, including Assyria, Babylonia, Mesopotamia and, Arabia, and also India. The last book covers Egypt and Africa. Matthias Floderus (1766-1822) was, after an academic career, made vicar of Rasbo and Kil in Uppsala archdiocese in 1797. He was also a great collector. Eric Abraham Almquist (1767-1830) was bishop of Härnösand. His library was sold at auction in Uppsala in 1832. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A distressing story about an individual who was forced to recant his belief in Christianity by the enemies of the Gospel in Welsch Switzerland. Initials and small endpiece. Religious tract explicating strict Christian interpretations by the Italian legal scholar Matteo Gribaldi describing the struggle of Franciscus Spira (Francesco Spiera), a respected and affluent Italian jurist in Padua, that ended in tragedy. Spiera had developed doubts about Roman Catholic teachings after reading various evangelical writings. He was subsequently arraigned before the Inquisition in Venice and repudiated his views in June of 1548. Following the abjuration of his "errors," having denied "the truth" as he saw it, Spiera fell into a severe state of despair which affected him so gravely that he had to consult physicians. The treatments were unsuccessful and Spiera succumbed to the complications arising due to this episode.The foreword is written by the controversial Lutheran reformer Matthias Flacius Illyricus, known for his adaptations of the Augustinian concept of original sin and his disapproval of Roman Catholic premises. His leanings towards a scientific study of church history can be seen as a precursor to modern hermeneutics. He was born in Istria, today Croatia, studied in Italy and Switzerland and was appointed professor of Hebrew at Wittenberg in 1544. He moved on to Magdeburg in 1549.Text in German. RARE EDITION of the Tory-inspired Book of Hours that was first published by Simon de Colines in 1543, reissued by his successors Regnault I and his son Claude Chaudiére. The same blocks were used for the illustrations and borders, from four of which the Lorraine cross signature was removed, presumably because Tory's shop was no longer active. These two editions are among the finest examples of French Renaissance printed book decoration. Particularly striking are the black arabesque borders, which recall niello-filled metal engraving as well as artists' pattern books of the period. The male portrait in the border of the Raising of Lazarus cut on m1v represents François I, according to Mortimer, the female portrait probably Eleanor of Austria. No other binding executed for the original female owner, Jeanne Petitroux, has been found. Similar designs and the large open tool above and under the name can be seen on bindings by Wotton Binder B and the Cupid's Bow Binder, but do not allow a positive identification. Spridda fläckar av olika slag. Titelbladet med något solkiga marginaler och en fuktrand nedtill som sedan återkommer här och där de första femhundra sidorna. Bläckfläck på s. 95 och några större fläckar på s. 657-60. Ett litet maskhål från s. 355 växer sig större och kompletteras från s. 671 med flera växande maskhål som blir ett stort maskhål de sista tjugo sidorna, alla i nedre marginalen. De stör dock inte texten. Mängder av samtida understrykningar och marginalanteckningar på både latin och grekiska samt flera små vackra pekande händer. Sista sidan fullskriven med delvis överstrukna kluddiga samtida anteckningar. Liten grekisk anteckning på försättsbladet. Titelbladet med bortskrapad gammal namnteckning nedtill och anteckning "Ex bibliotheca patris, Matth. Floderus, Upsaliæ 1788". På frampärmens insida E. A. En snarlik edition med endast (8) sidor i början trycktes också. Grekisk-latinsk parallelltext i spalter. Träsnittet på s. 782 är en liten karta där man ser Libyen med Kartago och Nilen, vilka dock ligger alldeles för nära varandra. Strabo (omkring 63 f.kr.-21 e.kr.) var grekisk geograf vars enda fullständiga bevarade arbete är denna hans utomordentligt värdefulla geografi i 17 böcker. En rundresa kring östra Medelhavet gav honom förstahandskunskaper om dessa områden vilka han kunde utnyttja i sin geografiska beskrivning som också innehåller information om litteratur och kulturhistoria, medicin och naturhistoria. Vid sidan av sina egna erfarenheter byggde Strabo på äldre författare som Eratosthenes, Poseidonios m.fl. De första böckerna avhandlar västra Europa, Storbritannien, Gallien, Bretagne, Italien, Sicilien, Sardinien och Korsika. I bok sju beskrivs nordöstra delarna av Europa medan bok åtta och nio handlar om Grekland. Beskrivningen av Asien inleds i bok elva med huvudvikten på Mellanöstern. Utöver det beskrivs Assyrien, Indien, Babylonien, Mesopotamien, Arabien etc. Den sista boken behandlar Egypten och Afrika. Matthias Floderus (1766-1822) utnämndes efter en akademisk karriär 1797 till kyrkoherde i Rasbo och Kil i Uppsala ärkestift. Han var en stor samlare och vän till Claes Fleming och C. C. Gjörwell. Eric Abraham Almquist (1767-1830) var biskop i Härnösand. Hans bibliotek såldes på auktion i Uppsala 1832.

L'opera è ripiena di curiose osservazioni, come quelle sul matrimonio che Domenichi consiglia a dottori, leggisti e medici, meno agli astrologi, umanisti e grammatici - perché troppo impegnati negli studi e poco adatti alla vita domestica - mentre considera cattivi mariti i filosofi, occupati di notte a meditare su strane idee ed utopie! L'ultimo dialogo contiene notizie sulle più virtuose e belle donne del tempo in diverse città d'Italia. «... de' molti libri usciti nel cinquecento in difesa e lode del sesso femminile, il presente è uno dei più ampi...» (Bongi, Giolito, 247). This elusive work features a major suite of wood engravings by a leading artist of the German Renaissance, vividly depicting the martyrdoms suffered by Christ's Apostles, the "Holy 12" of the title. Court painter to Frederick, elector of Saxony, and friend of Martin Luther, Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) is described by Britannica as the "chief pictorial propagandist of the Protestant cause in Germany." His reputation drew other artists to Wittenberg, and Muther observes that the city "achieved its position in the history of book illustration by virtue of Martin Luther and Lucas Cranach." He is best known today as an engraver, and the present woodcuts demonstrate his merit. Originally designed in 1514 and used once before (in a 1539 work on the Apostle's Creed), they are full of movement and detail, showing the various brutal deaths of the Apostles--by crucifixion, beheading, and in the case of the unfortunate Simon, by being sawn in half--before jeering crowds. In the sermon printed here at the front of the volume, Lutheran preacher Pollicarius (1524-67) explains how the lives and deaths of the Apostles can be a source of inspiration and instruction to Christians (while Lutherans had abolished the cult of the saints, they were still devoted to the Apostles). Accompanying each plate is a line linking back to the prefatory sermon and then a brief passage describing the image, often including scriptural citations of the event portrayed. Pollicarius studied under Luther at Wittenberg and wrote the first biography of his teacher, which he published together with Luther's assembled writings after the latter's death. Wittenberg printer Georg Rhau (1488-1548) was important to the success of the Protestant Reformation. In addition to producing religious texts, he was a composer and one of the leading music publishers in Germany. Deuxième édition de ce rare traité sur la beauté et l’amour, composé par l’humaniste, philosophe et universitaire italien Agostino Nifo (1473-1539?). "Après la réhabilitation des sens, Nifo confère au plaisir corporel, procuré par la beauté, une valeur inédite: non seulement le plaisir est légitime en lui-même mais il totalise l’ensemble des jouissances humainement possibles. Par-là, l’auteur libère l’amour humain, cupido, de l’accusation de bestialité sous-tendue par la hiérarchie ficinienne des trois amours ( ). Le ‘De Pulchro et amore’ donne une expression philosophique aux aspirations sensuelles des traités du XVIe siècle" (Constance Malard).
