Bella legatura in marocchino colore testa di moro firmata Bozerian jeune in basso al dorso. Dorso liscio con ricchi fregi e titolo in oro, ai piatti duplice cornice lineare che racchiude una cornice a palmette e motivi geometrici, il campo interno è interamente decorato da motivo a scacchiera, adagiato all'interno di ogni singolo riquadro on piccolo cerchio, dentelle interna, tagli dorati. Lievi usure agli angoli e al dorso, mancanza di un centimetro all'angolo superiore esterno del piatto inferiore. Interno fresco e con buoni margini. Seconda edizione aldina ed ultima, la prima venne stampata nel 1516, con le annotazioni di Erasmo da Rotterdam. La parte principale di questa raccolta sono le biografie non autorizzate di Svetonio dei primi venti imperatori romani, scritti assemblando documenti ufficiali e non, tra cui testi diffamatori e resoconti orali. Encadernação da época inteira de pele com nervos na lombada e ferros decorativos gravados a seco nas pastas. vestigios de atilhos. Impressão em língua italiana com caracteres góticos. Apresenta todas as páginas com o texto enquadrado por cercaduras xilograficas decorativas e ilustradas, e com 190 belas gravuras de página inteira. Exemplar em excelente estado de conservação, como costume o último fólio em branco não se encontra presente. Primeira edição rarissíma de uma obra famosa da qual só existem 2 exemplares registados em bibliotecas públicas italianas. Esta obra teve cerca de 40 edições durante os séculos XVI e XVII. Embora sem dados bibliograficos concretos (autor, data, impressor e local de impressão) presentes nesta primeira edição, a autoria da obra e das gravuras é atribuível ao dominicano Fr. Alberto da Castello, identificado, como autor ou editor, nas licenças da Inquisição venesiana dadas em 1521, as mesmas estão impressas no verso do fólio Ae e na frente do fólio A3. Existe uma edição do ano seguinte exactamente com a mesma paginação e número de gravuras, com o seguinte pé de imprensa :Venetia : per Marchio Sessa et Piero di Rauani, 1522. O que poderá eventualmente indiciar que foram estes também os impressores da primeira edição? Alberto da Castello (ca. 1460-1522) é também conhecido com os nomes: Alberto di Castello - Albertus Castellanus - Castello, Alberto da - Castellano, Alberto - Castellani, Alberto. Segundo Nota informativa do OPAC SBN: "Domenicano nel convento dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, prese il nome Castello dal sestiere veneziano di cui era originario. Nato a Venezia."(?) [EN] In 8. º (15x9, 7 cm), with 252, [iv] folios, printed in Venice, in 1521. Binding: contemporary full calf tooled blank at folders and spine. Remains of closing laces. Printed in Italian with gothic types, presenting all pages with the text inside typographical frames; and illustrated with 190 beautiful full-page wood cut engravings. Copy in an excellent condition and, as usual, the last blank folio is not present. Very rare first edition of a famous work from which there are only two copies recorded at the Italian public libraries. The authorship of the prints is attributable to the Dominican Friar Alberto da Castello which is identified as the author at the preliminary authorization pages. Although no specific bibliographic data is present in this first edition (author, date, place, and printer), the authorship of the work and the pictures are attributable to the Dominican Friar Alberto da Castello, identified as author or editor at the authorizations of the Venician Inquisition, given in 1521, printed at the reverse of folio Ae, and in front of folio A3 . There is an edition in the following year with exactly the same page layout and number of prints, with the following imprint: "Venetia: per Marchio Sessa et Piero di Rauani, 1522"; what could possibly indicate that these were also the printers of the first edition (?). Guillaume Budé (1467-1540), celebre umanista parigino, va annoverato anche fra i principali esponenti dell'umanesimo giuridico. Budé ricoprì numerose cariche pubbliche, partecipò al movimento della Riforma umanistica, diede un decisivo contributo alla creazione del Collége de France e del patrimonio librario della Biblioteca Nazionale. Celebri anche i suoi commentari sulla lingua greca ed il De asse, importante trattato sulle monete e misure antiche. Queste annotazioni al Digesto giustinianeo, centrali per la comprensione della critica del mos italicus e dell'intera tradizione post-accursiana, prendono spunto decisivo dai viaggi italiani in cui l'A. visionò la littera florentina. Sulla scia del lavoro di Poliziano e delle osservazioni di Lorenzo Valla, Budé s'impegnò in un lavoro filologico proteso a restituire puritas all'originario testo giustinieneo; una vera e propria rivoluzione metodologica alla base della nuova interpretazione umanistica. Zuerst lateinisch 1520 erschienen; hier einer von 5 Drucken der deutschen Ausgabe, die alle 1521 erschienen sind. - Im Winter 1519/20 hatte Oecolampadius als Domprediger in Augsburg gewirkt. Hier erlebte er, wie die Sache Luthers, die er bis dahin für einen Streit unter Gelehrten erachtete, sich zur Volksbewegung steigerte, die nach einer Stellungnahme verlangte. Er zog sich in das Brigittenkloster Altomünster zurück, um sich über seine eigene theologische Position klar zu werden. Die vorliegende Schrift war nicht zur Veröffentlichung bestimmt. Sie enthält darum keine vorsichtig abwägende theologische Argumentation, dafür ein umso eindeutigeres Bekenntnis zu Luther. Zugleich hat Oecolampadius hier allerlei Berichte und Zeugnisse gesammelt, die ihm zu Ohren gekommen sind und zeigen, dass der Vorstoß Luthers keine abwegige und aussichtslose Sache ist, sondern trotz der Machenschaften von Seiten Roms und verschiedener Theologischer Fakultäten weiter an Boden gewinnt. - Staehelin 35; Kuczynski 2059; VD 16, O 360. - Ränder gebräunt u. leicht stockfleckig.

The edition is distinguished by a fine woodcut title-border representing the 'Triumph of Humanitas' by Urs Graf (see Fig.1). 1 The Adagia or Proverbiorum libellus was originally published at Venice in 1498 as a col­lection of 306 proverbs drawn exclusively from classical sources. In the dedicatory letter to Richard Pace written for our Basel edition, the author explains that he began to collect adagia sacra because he felt that Christians should not depend on Greek and Latin prov­erbs alone, but should season their writings also with Christian wisdom. These adagia sacra, taken from the Bible and the Gospels in particular, are 431 in number, and practi­cally double the size of the work. [img-2324-left-large_default] Fig.1 Woodcut title-border by Urs Graf (272 × 172 mm, borderline) Polydore's De Inventoribus rerum, an encyclopaedia of inventors and inventions mainly from the classical past, but also Jews, Egyptians, and Asiatics, was first printed at Venice in 1499, as three books dealing with material inventions, natu­ral philosophy, medicine, and other profane matters. In our 1521 edition, Polydore introduced five new books on the history, organisation, and rituals of the church, including much information on pagan cus­toms, which ensured that the book was placed on the Index (first by the Sorbonne in 1551, then on the Trent Index in 1564). The work is celebrated as the earliest history of medicine after the invention of printing, as the first modern effort to explore the history of technology, and as an early and original essay in anthropology and comparative religion. Also considered are painting and painters (notably Raphael), sculpture, and architecture in the author's native Italy. 2 Thirty Latin editions had appeared by Polydore's death in 1555 and in all more than one hundred editions in various recensions and seven languages were published by the eighteenth century. 3 [img-2325-left-large_default] Fig.2 Parisian binding of circa 1550 (310 × 220 × 38 mm) The binding belongs to a group of similarly bound volumes that once formed a substantial part of Marcus Fugger's library. The material of these tasteful bindings is a smooth brown calf decorated by one, two, or three panels (see Fig.2), each formed by three fillets, with a fleur-de-lys stamped at the angles in gilt or blind (as here). The centres of the covers some­times are left empty (as here), or are decorated by an emblematic bird tool or double-headed eagle. 4 The volumes of this group were all bound circa 1545-1552 in the same anonymous (probably Parisian) workshop, which apparently also executed luxurious bind­ings for Fugger. 5 Most of Fugger's books have the author's name (and/or title) boldly lettered in ink up the fore-edge, indicating how the books originally stood on the shelves in his library. At an uncertain, later date, the volumes were shelved in the modern manner, and a librarian pasted vellum labels descriptive of the contents onto the spines (as often, the label has fallen away from our volume, leaving a residue of the adhesive). 6 A large part (if not all) of Marcus Fugger's books descended to the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein; the finest were sold in Munich by Karl & Faber in 1933-1934. Many others, incorporated in the Oettingen-Wallerstein family library at Schloss Harburg (formerly Maihingen), were sold in 1980 to Freistaat Bayern and deposited in Augsburg Univer­sity Library. First printing of this famous memoir of Charlemagne (742-814), written perhaps a decade after his death by a former courtier adopting the literary model of Suetonius' Vita Augusti. Thus Einhard does not record the Emperor's deeds and public life, but docu­ments his tastes, habits, and appearance, not sparing bad teeth, a limp, and gall stones. In these matters and on a range of other subjects, he records details not found in other sources. Einhard carried among his friends at the Frankish court the nickname 'Bezaleel' and was therefore most probably a metalworker; it is possible he also worked as an architect. 1 In the Vita Karoli, Einhard refers to construction of the chapel in Aachen palace (now cathedral), describing its bronze doors and marble columns brought from Ravenna, but he does not elaborate on his own rôle. Some critics have concluded that Einhard was overseer of those building works, noting his interest in Vitruvius, and a project to carve an architectural model in ivory (Dictionary of Art, 10, pp.115-116); however, the nature of his duties, like his real intentions in writ­ing the Vita Karoli, and the date of its composition, remain uncer­tain and matters for scholarly debate. Guillaume Budé (1467-1540), celebre umanista parigino, va annoverato anche fra i principali esponenti dell'umanesimo giuridico. Budé ricoprì numerose cariche pubbliche, partecipò al movimento della Riforma umanistica, diede un decisivo contributo alla creazione del Collége de France e del patrimonio librario della Biblioteca Nazionale. Celebri anche i suoi commentari sulla lingua greca ed il De asse, importante trattato sulle monete e misure antiche. Queste annotazioni al Digesto giustinianeo, centrali per la comprensione della critica del mos italicus e dell'intera tradizione post-accursiana, prendono spunto decisivo dai viaggi italiani in cui l'A. visionò la littera florentina. Sulla scia del lavoro di Poliziano e delle osservazioni di Lorenzo Valla, Budé s'impegnò in un lavoro filologico proteso a restituire puritas all'originario testo giustinieneo; una vera e propria rivoluzione metodologica alla base della nuova interpretazione umanistica. First Aldine edition of the works of Apuleius, including the sole ancient Roman novel written in Latin to come to us completely intact: the "Golden Ass" — styled here as Lusus asini ("The Jest of the Ass") by editor Francesco Torresani, a.k.a. Franciscus Asulanus. Also present are the Hermetic text known as the Asclepius, and => the first printing of Alcinous's commentary on Plato, the latter with the text entirely in Greek. The one on the title-page shows the paladin Orlando on horseback who has overthrown an opponent. On a hill a rather plain Angelica looks on, while, in a clear reference to the work's title, Cupid with an arrow on his bow flutters above. In a chivalric Renaissance iconography dominated by the Morgante and later by the Orlando Furioso, this is one of the few images specifically executed for the Orlando Innamorato. The block is signed 'IO.B.P.', the initials of a artist and woodcutter who worked occasionally for Zoppino and whose identity has been the object of many suggestions, such as Giovanni Battista da Porto or Giovanni Battista Palumba; but the debate has remained unresolved. In the construction of the scene a debt is apparent to an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi showing Horatius Cocles on horseback trampling a fallen soldier (Delaborde, 1887, no. 183). The other three woodcuts are anticipated from the Zoppino edition of the Successi bellici compiled by Nicolò degli Agostini, which appeared on 1 August 1521. The first woodcut at A2v, signed 'I.B.P.' (but obviously the same artist), here illustrates the first book of the Orlando Innamorato, with a caption printed in red, while in the Successi bellici it depicts "la rotta de Maragniano", including cannon, anachronistic in the age of Charlemagne. The other two woodcuts are signed 'z.a.', for Zuan Andrea, whose initials appear in numerous woodcuts employed in Zoppino editions, making him an important collaborator of this interesting and remarkable Renaissance Venetian publisher. Again various proposals have been made about the identity of this artist, but none have proved convincing. The woodcut at N3v, marking the beginning of the second book of the Orlando Innamorato, also illustrates the "fatto darmi de Ravenna" in the Successi bellici, while that at [cum]8r, marking the beginning of the third book, in the other works shows the "fatto darmi de Vicenza". All these woodcuts are reused in the 1528 and 1532 reprints of Boiardo's poem. II: Collation: AAA8, AA-DD8, EE6. [46] ll. The final blank leaf is present. Woodcut printer's device and colophon on l. The title-page is illustrated by a large woodcut depicting the Roman hero, Marcus Curtius, fully equipped with armour and sword, in the act of leaping into the abyss. The woodcut is again signed by Zoan Andrea and was previously used in the 1521 Zoppino edition of the same fifth book. The image, again inspired by an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (Delaborde, 1887, no. 184; Essling), presents something of a puzzle, since it is not known to be used elsewhere in Zoppino's catalogue, and it is possible therefore that the publisher was planning an edition of Livy, source of the Marcus Curtius legend, which did not go ahead and so the woodcut was re-employed to illustrate a chivalric text with which it has nothing in common.IV: Collation: A-K4. The title-page is illustrated with another full-page woodcut signed by Zoan Andrea, this time showing a mounted rider accompanied by his standard bearer on foot. Once more the attention by the artist to the Roman style of dress suggests that the image was planned for an edition of Livy that did not go ahead. This probability is reinforced by the fact that Zoan Andrea again is inspired by a famous engraving of "Scipio Aphrica" by Marcantonio Raimondi (Delaborde, 1887, no. 185; Essling). The five small woodcut illustrations in text are part of the standard chivalric iconography, depicting a banquet (D2v), a different banquet (E4r, repeated at l. H2r), a ship landing (G1r), and a group of warriors (I2v). A contemporary hand has added annotations to all the vignettes but the first: 'cons mii' (E4r), 'vita della nina mia' (G1r), 'speranza méa' (H2r), 'ai me son morto' (I2v).Eighteenth-century Italian parchment over boards, smooth spine with gilt title on hazel morocco lettering-piece, speckled edges. Manuscripts shelf marks on spine ('G nº 26') and back pastedown ('F. IX. 13.'). Ancient repairs in the outer margin of the first gathering, covering some letters of the marginalia, light stains on few leaves, small hole on the last two leaves with loss of a few letters on l. K3. An exceptionally well preserved and fresh copy considering the heavy wear and tear that chivalric texts were subjected to through intense reading. Although there had been several previous Sixteenth-century editions - in Venice by Rusconi in 1506, 1511, and 1513; in Milan by Vegio in 1513, by Scinzenzeler in 1517 (the first issue is lost, but it is known from a reissue in 1539), and by Gorgonzola in 1518 -, as well as the probability that there were other lost editions, Zoppino took the text from the 1495 edition, the first in three books, published at Scandiano by Pellegrino de' Pasquali on behalf of Boiardo's widow, Taddea Gonzaga. Although the print-run of the Scandiano edition was 1,250 copies, none survived beyond the end of the Eighteenth century. In 1521 Zoppino reprinted the dedication by local schoolmaster, Antonio Caraffa to Boiardo's son, Camillo Boiardo, dated 18 May 1495, and included a Latin carmen by Caraffa, together with a sonnet by Antonio Cammelli omitted from the Rusconi editions of the poem.The Zoppino edition is therefore an important source for the text of Boiardo's poem, since it derives directly from the lost Scandiano edition, together with the first 1506 Rusconi edition and the so-called Trivulziana manuscript. Boiardo scholars, in particular for the 1998 edition of the poem by Cristina Montagnani and Antonia Tissoni Benvenuti, have been hampered in this respect by the unavailability of the two known copies of the 1521 editions (see below) and have had to make do with the 1528 reprint. Comparison with this last shows the Po valley koinè of Boiardo being modified in an ongoing process of linguistic correction, so the recovery of the earlier edition is a matter of some importance, as well as an intriguing example of how an enterprising publisher such as Zoppino operated on the language of chivalric texts. Fascinatingly, the 1521 edition also includes marginal "apostille" in italic type (as they are described on the title-page), identifying episodes and characters, in a scheme that will become commonplace in future editions of the Orlando Furioso. For some reason these seem to have not been judged a success and they were omitted from the Zoppino reprints of 1528 and 1532, but they are of importance for our understanding of Renaissance reading strategies. All the copies have however been lost, so the present, which survives in one other copy, is the first extant edition. It was subsequently purchased in Paris by Girolamo Duca d'Adda, who issued posthumously the Note bibliografiche of the great bibliographer of the Italian chivalric romance, Marquis Gaetano Melzi (1783-1851), of which a substantial portion was dedicated to this one item (Milan, 1863, pp. 47-54). Following the sale of D'Adda's library, it found its way to England and the collection of Charles Fairfax Murray and was described in the sale that broke up the same (cf. H.W. Davis, Catalogo dei libri posseduti da Charles Fairfax Murray proveniente dalla biblioteca del Marchese d'Adda, parte terza, London, 1902, n. 692). After this date it dropped out of sight and, despite extensive searches, it was not seen by Neil Harris for his bibliography of the Orlando Innamorato published in 1988-91; it is clear, however, that for a long time it was in the Ferrara collection of Renzo Bonfiglioli (1904-63) and later was acquired, together with numerous other Zoppino editions, by the Beinecke Library at Yale University, where it was catalogued online only comparatively recently. This copy contains the first five books in the Zoppino 1521 editions, but lacks the sixth book.The earliest bibliographical record of the present copy was when it was sold for 5,000 schellings at the Dorotheum Auction House in Vienna, on 22 November 1983. Its existence was noted by Harris (I, p. 72), but the auction house record was unclear about the composition of the books by Nicolò Degli Agostini and the identity of the purchaser was not known. It is now known to have been the music composer and conductor, René Clemencic. Its reappearance on the market is therefore an event of exceptional importance.The present description was revised and corrected by Prof. Neil Harris and Anna Carocci of Udine University. Bell'esemplare con ampi margini su carta vergellata con marca d'acqua (una mano e un fiore), antiche chiose a inchiostro bruno al margine di molte pagg. e sottolineature, saltuario lieve alone marginale, dorso e angoli restaurati, sguardie moderne, legatura molto vissuta. Dizionario biografico Treccani: "Gli studiosi concordano nel credere che Ponzetti abbia trascorso la sua infanzia e gioventù a Napoli, dove probabilmente nacque l'amicizia con il genovese Giovanni Battista Cibo, futuro papa Innocenzo VIII, che aveva seguito il padre Arone, medico, e a cui la famiglia di Ponzetti era molto legata, come egli stesso afferma nella dedica al cardinale Cibo della sua Summa brevis theologie (Roma, G. Anche la rete delle sue relazioni attestava il suo potere: così l'amicizia con il banchiere napoletano Paolo di Tolosa, cui dedicò un primo compendio del suo Libellus de venenis, e quella con Agostino Chigi, alla quale è molto probabile si debba la scelta nel 1516 di affidare a Baldassarre Peruzzi l'incarico di affrescare nella chiesa di S.       Cologne: Eucharius Cervicornus, 1521. A very attractive copy; first 30 and last two leaves with a single small wormhole.. Folio, title within an ornate woodcut border; fine woodcut map of the world and several woodcut diagrams, woodcut initials; nineteenth-century continental binding of half calf, flat spine gilt in compartments. An important early edition of Macrobius, the first to be edited by Arnoldus Vesaliensis (the classicist Arnold Haldrein of Wesel). This is a handsome edition, folio in size with an illustrated title-page and with many fine woodcuts and initials throughout, including a large and further developed, version of the famous Macrobian world map. One of the very earliest world maps, this half-page woodcut depicts a world split into two - Europe and the balancing Antipodes - and surrounded by ocean at the edges. This remarkable image, which survived by manuscript transmission from the fifth century into the age of printing, had a strong and lingering effect on post-Renaissance and pre-discovery geography: as Shirley points out, reprints "continued to appear from Venetian presses throughout the next century in at least 1521, 1528, 1565 and 1574. There was also a Basle edition of 1535? Crude variants also appeared in editions of Sacrobosco's Opusculum Sphericum throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, As late as 1640 the title-page of Rosaccio's Teatro del Cielo included a small rectangular map after Macrobius?" (Mapping of the World, p. 12).There is an immense literature on the Macrobian world view: Carlos Sanz (El primer mapa del mundo?, Real Sociedad Geográfica, B 455, Madrid, 1966) has studied the significance of the maps with regard to Quiros and subsequent voyages of discovery into the southern hemisphere, while Beaglehole in his great edition of the journals of Cook has neatly written of 'the circular maps of another cycle, that of Macrobius? [who] goes rather further than Cicero or St. Isidore; for whereas Cicero thought the southern zone habitable, and St. Isidore noted that there 'the Antipodes are fabulously said to dwell', Macrobius considered that the heat of the torrid zone would forever keep men from providing any proof. There however is the neatly balanced round of the Macrobian map: in the middle the broad Bath of Ocean, bounded on either side by the wavy coastline of an insular continent, northern and southern, snugly fitted into the waters of its half-circle. Each is divided into three bands: the first, rather narrow, facing on the Alveus Oceani and labelled Perusta - 'burnt up'? So seductive, in the field of science, was harmony, symmetry, balance, the fitness of things; so difficult has it been for the geographer, as for other men, to wait on facts. Much enlarged first edition in French of the first illustrated description of the Low Countries, printed by Plantin, written by the Italian nobleman Ludovico Giucciardini (1521-1589). The original Italian edition was published in Antwerp by Sylvius in 1567 and by Plantin in 1581 with nearly three times as many illustrations and the present French edition was again enlarged. A general description of the Low Countries is given, followed by the different provinces and its cities, with maps of some of the major cities of the province. The topography of the various regions and major cities is emphasized, but it also covers all aspects of contemporary life in each area as well, including an extensive treatment of the fine arts, trade and the commercial concerns of each region. Not only was Guicciardini's book a great success, going through dozens of editions in a wide variety of languages; its maps, plans and views were also copied for decades.The binding rubbed along the extremities and the spine with a wormhole and some damage to the ends, but otherwise good. Restoration to the lower outer corner of the first 22 leaves after the title-page and p. 164, as well as to the maps of Brussels, Brabantia, and the diocese of Cologne; some ink stains on pages 209-212, and some occasional marginal waterstains; still a good copy.

These texts give an account of the life and times of Shingen Takeda (1521-73), and his son Katsuyori Takeda (1546-82), the greatest warriors of a prominent military house active from 1185 to about 1600, a period of considerable chaos in Japan. The Takeda clan had a profound influence on the development of the concept of bushido, the warrior class ethical system, which in turn can be said to permeate much of modern Japanese culture.       1521 - Bulino, 1521-23 circa, da un soggetto attribuito a Giulio Romano. Esemplare nel primo stato di tre o secondo di quattro, con l’indirizzo di Antonio Salamanca e la data 1541. Magnifica prova, ricca di toni, impressa su carta vergata coeva con filigrana "Balestra nel cerchio con giglio" (Briquet 760, carta databile alla prima metà del XVI secolo), rifilata al rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. L’incisione raffigura l’incontro tra Annibale e Scipione, prima della battaglia di Zama, durante la seconda Guerra Punica, svoltasi nel 202 a.C., secondo la narrazione fornita da Tito Livio (Storie, XXX 29 e 30. 1-2). Sulle due sponde del fiume, personificato da una divinità incoronata, in basso a sinistra, sono: sulla destra, Scipione, accompagnato da due portabandiera e due ragazzi; sulla sinistra, Annibale, con la sua armata, gli elefanti e la cavalleria. Il soggetto corrisponde alla dodicesima scena degli arazzi del ciclo Gesta di Scipione. La serie completa di arazzi legata alla figura di Scipione è formata da due serie distinte: 13 rappresentazioni delle Gesta di Scipione hanno per fonte letteraria Tito Livio, e i Trionfi di Scipione – di 9 scene – basata sulla descrizione dello storico Appiano. La serie fu commissionata da Francesco I di Francia nel luglio del 1532, all’imprenditore Marc Crétif, di Bruxelles. Completata nel 1535, la serie fu distrutta nel 1797 per ordine del direttore della Garde_Meuble, Vilette, perché aveva bisogno dell’oro degli arazzi per pagare i suoi dipendenti. I cartoni dei Trionfi furono realizzati da Giulio Romano, mentre quelli della Gesta erano tradizionalmente attribuiti a Giulio e al Penni. Vasari, in riferimento ad un’incisione anonima del Colloquio di Annibale e Scipione scrive che il disegno risale a Giulio. Al Louvre è conservato un disegno che corrisponde, in controparte e nelle linee generali, alla stampa. Un altro abbozzo della scena è conservato a Parigi, reca l’iscrizione "Julio Romano", ma Bacou l’attribuisce al Penni. Quasi tutti i repertori ascrivono l’invenzione di questa scena a Giulio Romano. La Massari ritiene che il disegno sarebbe stato realizzato intorno al 1521-23, prima della sua partenza per Mantova. La stampa è catalogata dal Bartsch tra le incisioni della scuola di Marcantonio, mentre erroneamente è assegnata dal D’Arco a Giorgio Ghisi. L’attribuzione al Dente, sostenuta in passato da Heinecken, Huber, Zanetti e Passavant, e confermata anche dalla Massari, sulle indubbie affinità stilistiche tra questo foglio e altre opere del ravennate, ci sembra assolutamente plausibile. Il primo stato della stampa, ipotizzato da Massari, non è conosciuto in nessun esemplare. Ex collezione Staatliche graphische Sammlung München(Lugt 1613). Eccezionale esemplare. Magnificent example, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "crossbow in the circle with lily" (760 Briquet, paper dating from the first half of the sixteenth century), trimmed to copper, in excellent condition. The engraving depicts the meeting between Hannibal and Scipio, before the battle of Zama, during the Second Punic War, which took place in 202 BC, according to Tito Livio. (Stories, XXX 29 and 30. 1-2). On both sides of the river, personified by a deity crowned, bottom left, on the right are Scipio, accompanied by two standard-bearer and two boys; on the left, Hannibal, with his army, elephants and cavalry. The subject corresponds to the twelfth scene of the tapestries cycle Gesta of Scipio. In July 1532, François I ordered a gigantic ensemble of twenty-three-panel tapestry depicting the heroic deeds and ultimate triumph of Scipio Africanus.       Venetiis, per Guilielmum de Fontaneto, 1521. Folio. Komplett med 136 blad inklusive det tomma sista bladet. (Oregelbunden numrering, [ii] + "136" (=133) + tomt blad.) Titelsidan tryckt i rött och svart inom rik träsnittsbård med bl. a. fyra delfiner, och en träsninttsvinjett (upprepad i texten) föreställande Colosseum. Anfanger och träsnitt i texten. Stort exemplar, endast lätt skuret att döma av några blad med bevarad råkant nedtill. Samtida eller nära samtida pergamentryggsband, för- & eftersättsbladen spruckna på grund av de mjuka pärmarnas böjlighet, inlagan ställvis lätt solkad och fläckad samt lätt maskstungen, dock med obetydlig inverkan på texten, främre fria försättsbladet med gammal prydlig antikvariatnotering i svart bläck med undestrykningar i rött. Proveniens: [Victor von Stedingk], med karakteristisk notering i blyerts: "Träsnitten av Lucantonio degli Uberti (1sta illustrerade upplagan utkom 1510) (se Baer: Catalogue 750, nr 91)". Tidig och sällsynt Martialisupplaga med komentar av Domizio Calderini (1446-1478) och Giorgio Merula (1430-1494) som omger texten på tre sidor. (Vilken som är den första tryckta upplagan av Martialis är omtvistat, ofta anges en Ferrara-upplaga från 1471, men Sweynheym and Pannartz' odaterade romerska upplaga skall vara tryckt 1470-71, och det finns även en upplaga tryckt i Venedig som kan vara den första.) Åren 86-102 publicerade han tolv böcker epigram, Epigrammata, mest korta humoristiska och satiriska dikter, som ger en närgången bild av livet på stadens torg och gator, teaterns aktörer och den egna bekantskapskretsen. De ger också en inblick i poetens tillvaro i det samtida Rom, som ofta var ekonomiskt bekymmersam och präglades av ett klient-patron-förhållande, som Martialis fann mycket betungande. I de satiriska epigrammen kritiseras ofta moraliska fel och brister - hos senatorer såväl som prostituerade. En betydande del av hans diktning riktar sig till kejsaren. Denna brokiga blandning av satirisk och humoristisk samhällsskildring och härskarpanegyrik kan vi på svensk botten närmast jämföra med Carl Michael Bellmans produktion" (Jon Hogdal).

Reliure de l'époque en veau estampé sur ais de bois. palettes décoratives encore bien franche. Restaurations au dos quelques auréoles claires sur les premiers et derniers feuillets , quelques trous de vers dans le dernier plat. Le corps d'ouvrage reste sain et le papier a conservé une belle sonorité. Epitre de Josse Bade daté de décembre 1514, importantes tables 18 feuillets , 393 feuillets pour le texte avec de nombreuses lettrines à fonds criblés. Au colophon "Finis in calcographia Nicolai de Pratis idibus Iunii MCXXI" Cette réédition ou contrefaçon de l'edition de Josse Bade donnée en 1514 a été donnée par Nicolas des Prés en juin 1521. Renouard nous informe qu'elle a été partagée entre Bernard Aubry, Pierre Gaudoul et Jean Petit. mais il n'a jamais vu cette page de titre, et ce semble bien le plus rare. Nous avons donc ici un quatrieme libraire non répertorié qui a mis en vente cette édition, Gilles de Gourmont avec sa marque repertorié N°381.par Renouard Les exemplaire à la marque de Gourmont semblent d'une insigne rareté, nous n'en avons pas repéré encore dans les différentes bibliothèques publiques. Très rare première édition collective, publiée du vivant d’Erasme, rassemblant ses sept apologies dont la célèbre 'Apologie contre Jacques Latomus' et les pièces de la polémique qui l’avaient précédée. La page de titre est ornée d’un bel encadrement sur bois attribué à Ambrosius Holbein, qui paraît dans ce volume pour la première fois et qui sera repris par la suite sur diverses productions (cf. Ambroise Firmin-Didot, 'Essai typographique et bibliographique sur l'histoire de la gravure sur Bois', col. 80). Les titres intermédiaires de deux autres apologies sont également encadrés. Lettrines historiées, bandeaux et ornements typographiques. Date : "Mense februario 1522" au titre et grande marque de Frobenius au colophon à la date: "mense octobri 1521". (Adams, E.488.
