The Annunciation to the Shepherds, a large illuminated miniature on a leaf on vellum from a Book of Hours.[France, Paris, c.

1500 - Miniature in a gently arched compartment showing two three-quarter length shepherds leaning on their staves as thye stand among their sheep in a night-time pastoral landscape, a gold angel appearing in a blue arc in the sky radiating light which catches the clothes of the shepherds themselves, above a large initial, full border on a parti-coloured ground of liquid gold and brown with coloured flowers and acanthus leaves and three birds; verso with illuminated initials, rubrics in blue, and line-fillers, panel border (a little rubbed at edges). Size of leaf: 140 x 92mm, size of miniature c. 84 x 55mm. On recto 7 lines of text in a small lettre bâtarde (opening of Terce), verso with 30 lines of text (written space 94 x 56mm). An elegant night scene, lit by the light radiating from the angel, in the style which originated with Jean Bourdichon in tours and worked its way up, through Rouen, to the capital. The miniature is in the style of the illuminator known as the Master of Morgan 219 or, more recently, the Master of the Chronique Scandaleuse, who worked in Paris c. 1493-c.1510, illustrating manuscripts and probably designing woodcuts for printed books. The practice of using blue for rubrics is characteristically Parisian. The Use, with the antiphon 'Maria virgo' at Terce, on the verso here, is that of Rome. Another leaf apparently from the same manuscript, showing the Baptism of Christ, was sold in these rooms, 12 December 1967, lot 6, afterwards Maggs European Bulletin 6 (1969), no. 8, with plate.

De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii [bound with] Fabularum Liber, ad omnium poëtarum lectionem mire necessarius & ante hac nunquam excusus... Eiusdem Poeticon Astronomicon, libri quatuor

An attractive sammelband of two interesting texts which bring together the ancient knowledge and imagination as they were received by humanists and generals readers in the Renaissance, and in the same physical condition: the first work is the celebrated encyclopaedia by neoplatonist Martinus Capella, one of the earliest developers of the system of the seven liberal arts and a fundamental textbook of the Middle Ages, the second work is the first edition of Hyginus' illustrated Fables, bound in a first-half of the 16th century binding. Capella, a fifth-century intellectual from Cartage, philosopher of neo-platonic orientation, worked as a lawyer in a period marked by the sack of Rome and Cartage, which marked in a way the end of an era and a culture. The nuptiis preserves not only the ancient knowledge but does it in an elegant fashion, it is written in the form of an elaborate didactic allegory, divided in 9 books, the first two, of an allegorical nature, serve as a narrative frame for the doctrinal exposition, Mercury's search of a wife, Philologie, in the presence of the gods; the remaining other 7 books are dedicated to the liberal arts, the trivium: grammar, dialectic, rhetoric, and the quadrivium: geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and music. The eighth book, describing a geocentric astronomical model, is celebrated for having been praised by Copernicus, "eut une importance fondamentale car il fut loué par Copernic qui y constata la présence de la théorie des orbites héliocentriques : dans son œuvre De revolutionibus orbium caelestium, I 10, Copernic fait l'éloge de Martianus, tout en étant conscient que d'autres auteurs latins partageaient la même théorie" (Ilaria Ramelli). The use of the prosimeter, alternance of prose and verse, gives the work elegance, and is one of the fascinating aspects of the work. The work became a textbook for rhetoricians, pupils, and humanists, from the Carolingian period until the Renaissance. Fine printing by Dionigi Bertocchi, typographer from Reggio nell'Emilia -active between 1492 and 1502- in Treviso, Vicenza, Reggio, Bologna and Modena. [Bound with]: Hyginus, Caius Julius. Fabularum Liber, ad omnium poëtarum lectionem mire necessarius & ante hac nunquam excusus... Eiusdem Poeticon Astronomicon, libri quatuor. Quibus accesserunt similis argumenti. Palaephati de fabulosis narrationibus, liber I. P. Fulgentiis Placiadis Episcopis Carthaginensis Mythologiarum, libri III. Eiusdem de vocum antiquarum interpretatione, liber I. Arati Φαινομήνον fragmentum, Germanico Caesare interprete. Eiusdem Phaenomena Graece, cum interpretatione latina. Procli de sphaera libellus, Graece & Latine. 1535. Basle. J. Hervagius. 12 ff., 246 pp., 1 ff. First edition of Hyginus' illustrated fables, an important corpus for the knowledge of ancient mythography, which brings together some three hundred myths and celestial genealogies; the author (67 BC-17 AD), of Spanish birth, was friends to Ovid, commentator of Virgil, and curator of the Palatine Library. Included in this Basle edition, is the author's work on astronomy, an initiation to the celestial sciences combining physical knowledge and mythological narratives -however today the attribution of this astronomy text is now in doubt; and other astronomy and mythological texts as the Phaenomena of Aratos, the Mythologicon by Fulgentius, and the Sphaera of Proclus. In all, a beautiful printing, illustrated with 48 astrological woodcuts in the manner if Weiditz, which decorate Hyginus' astronomical compilation. Goff C118. H 4371. Klebs 668.2. Sander 1626.

      - The catalogue of the library and collection of antiquities of Pierre-Adrien Pâris; the best professional library of the early 18th century. He bequeathed it to the city of Besançon. It contained a number of the essential books on architecture, about 1500 manuscript architectural designs by Pâris, and paintings and drawings by Fragonard, Boucher, and Saint-Aubin. Pâris (1745-1819), was architect to Louis XVI, designer of the royal cabinet, and directed royal festivities at Versailles, Marly, and Trianon. The collection reflects his deep appreciation for the classical architecture of Greece and Rome, where he journeyed several times. During these trips, he sketched buildings and artifacts found at Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and other sites, which, along with other drawings, compose the 1500 architectural designs described here. These experiences prepared him to serve as director of the Académie de France in Rome under Napoleon, where he was responsible for excavations at the Colosseum. The library has considerable sections on architecture, history, the arts of antiquity, etc. The first 40 pages provide a biographical sketch of Pâris. Pages 1-146 enumerate 777 lots of books. Pages 147-222 contain a description of his cabinet (509 lots). The book concludes with an index of authors and artists. The engravings depict bronzes, terra cotta sculptures, marble statues, and other unique items in the collection. Nice copy, apart from the foxing. From the library of Bernard H. Breslauer (his sale Christie's NY, 22-23 March 2005, lot 660). ? N.B.G., Vol. 39, cols. 209-10.          Plautus integer cum interpretatione Joannisba ptistae pij [sic].(Milan: Ulrich Scinzenzeler, 18 January

1500 - Folio. 422 leaves, 60 lines of commentary plus headline, Roman and Greek letter, some printing in red (on Aa2), last leaf with register. 17th-century Parisian binding of citron morocco, gilt panel on covers, spine eleborately gilt, marbled edges, a few marginal wormholes in first 3 leaves, covers of binding with some abrasions (no loss of leather), some annotations slightly cropped by binder A finely bound copy of Pio?s newly edited Plautus heavily annotated in the 16th century. The annotations are to be found throughout the volume and are written in a small neat hand of the 16th century. They are sometimes located in the text (corrections of letters or readings (mostly in error), but many are found in the margins, and some in the space between the text and the commentary. These vary in length from a single line or a couple of words to several lines (e.g. a note of 19 lines on r2verso, and are generally explanations of words like patagiarii, mantellum (mantellum penule genus quo se vet ut lorica muniebant), suminosus (sumen lac suis extractum ac sue occisa). There are also some maniples drawn in the same ink. Occasionally where the notes are at the edge of the margin, they have been very slightly croped by the binder. There is no intimation at all of who the annotator was but he obviously knew Greek well, and read the text carefully: scarcely a page is left without some sort of mark, even if not an annotation. Many of the corrections in the text it must be admitted are wrong. The author of the commentary first printed here was Giovanni Battista Pio (1460-1540) a Bolognese humanist, and pupil of Beroaldo, who at this period was working in Milan, which explains the place of publication. The author of many commentaries on Latin writers (Lucretius (1511) , Verrius Flaccus, Lucan, Cicero, etc.), Pio knew Greek and he quotes frequently and at length in this commentary from Apollonius Rhodius (o6), the Greek Anthology (e.g. p5, r7, epigram by Antipater, u8verso epigram by Julian) and other Greek sources. This is the last incunable edition of Plautus. He was later commented upon by Pylades Buccardus (Bologna 1503) edited by Britannicus, and there then followed a number of 16th-century editions, including one edited by Denis Lambin. Provenance: Jean François Theuart of Paris, 1674 to whom awarded as a prize ('Nobilis et optimae spei adolescens Joannes Franciscus Theuart parisiensis in 3o ordine Marchiano ad praemium strictae orationis proxime accessit. Les Vêpres siciliennes, to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier after their libretto Le duc d'Albe, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on June 13, 1855. "... For those wishing to understand Verdi's musical development during the 1850s, Les vêpres siciliennes is of enormous importance. In both strictly formal terms and in larger matters of operatic structure, it marks a decisive turn away from the language of the middle-period Italian operas and the emergence of many stylistic features we associate with the later Verdi. There is no subsequent Verdi opera in which the experience of Les vêpres will not be recalled and refined." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Nielsen illustrated a great amount of stories like the tales of Andersen, Perrault and the Arabian nights. Later in life he migrated to the United States where he worked for Walt Disney. In literature about book illustration Nielsen is usually referred to in addition to names as Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham. His work was very innovative and progressive.

The principal navigations, voiages, traffiqves and discoueries of the English nation, made by sea

or ouer-land, to the remote and farthest distant quarters of the earth, at any time within the compasse of these 1500 yeeres, deuided into three seuerall volumes, according to the positions of the regions, whereunto they were directed. This first volume containing the woorthy discoueries, &c. of the English toward the north and northeast by sea ... together with many notable monuments and testimonies of the ancient forren trades, and of the warrelike and other shipping of this realme of England in former ages. Whereunto is annexed also a briefe commentarie of the true state of Island, and of the northern seas and lands situate that way. And lastly, the memorable defeate of the Spanish huge Armada, anno 1588, and the famous victorie atchieued at the citie of Cadiz, 1596, are described. Imprinted at London : by George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker, 1598-1600. Three volumes bound in two (the standard arrangement), folio, period full speckled calf with gilt rule, expertly rebacked, spines in compartments with ornamental gilt tooling and contrasting leather title labels lettered in gilt, [24], 619; [16], 312, 204; [16], 868 pp; woodcut initials and ornaments throughout; second volume with title The second volvme of the principal navigations ... to the south and south-east parts of the world, at any time within the compasse of these 1600 yeres ...; third volume with title The third and last volvme of the voyages ... of the English nation, and in some few places, where they haue not been, of strangers, performed within and before the time of these hundred yeeres, to all parts of ... America ... Together with the two ... voyages of Sir Francis Drake and M. Thomas Candish round about the circumference of the whole earth, and diuers other voyages intended and set forth for that course ...; a fine set of the second and most desirable edition of Hakluyt's collection of voyages, the first volume having the rare first state title page which includes mention of the victorie atchieued at the citie of Cadiz, 1596, and the account (pp 607-619) A briefe and true report of the honourable voyage vnto Cadiz, 1596 (the so-called "Cadiz leaves"), both suppressed by order of Queen Elizabeth after the disgrace of Essex (the subsequent second state title page had slight alterations and the date 1599, and the account of the voyage to Cadiz was excised from most copies); lacking the world map, which is only known in a few copies. Printing and the Mind of Man, 105; Sabin, 29595, 29597, 29598; Hill, 743; Church, 322. Hakluyt had published the first edition of The principal navigations in 1589, but it is the monumental second edition of this work, greatly revised and expanded and published in three volumes between 1598 and 1600, which is the definitive version. Estimated to contain more than 1.7 million words, Hakluyt's work is a vast and comprehensive history of English maritime ventures and colonial enterprise, an epic account whose eloquence places it at the forefront of Elizabethan letters. A patentee and director of the Virginia Company, Hakluyt was a promoter of English colonization in the New World, and the third volume treats almost exclusively English exploration, colonization and commercial activity in the Americas. The principal navigations, voiages, traffiqves and discoueries of the English nation is among the earliest works printed in English that deals with American subject matter in significant depth. The third volume also contains accounts of the first English voyagers to round Cape Horn and enter the Pacific, including Drake and Cavendish (1586, as well as the failed voyage of 1591). "An invaluable treasure of nautical information which has affixed to Hakluyt's name a brilliancy of reputation which time can never efface or obscure." (Church)

Adams C-1240; Besterman, Old Art Books, p. 23; Cicognara 273; Honeyman 659; Schlosser 398-399; BMC STC Italian, p. 164. First edition of the treatises on the arts of the goldsmith and the sculptor by Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571), one of the most important artists of Mannerism. Cellini divulges the wonderful secrets and methods of the goldsmith, designing medals, enamelling, minting coins, soldering, tinting diamonds, etc. and also the techniques of the Florentine sculptors of the `quattrocento', like those of Donatello who attacked the block directly without the use of large scale models. There is also a crucial passage on Michelangelo's sculptural technique: how he outlined the figure in charcoal on the block, made large scale clay models, and the kind of chisels and drills Michelangelo used. Oddly enough Cellini's treatises were not republished till 1731, nor translated until the 19th century. With an ownerships' inscription of Domenico Martinelli di Lucca on the second blank page, lacking a blank leaf, some slight foxing and a few marginal stains. A very good copy.

Castigationes seu emendationes pharmacopolarum, sive apothecariorum, ac Arabum medicorum Mesue, Serapionis, Rafis, Alpharabii, & aliorum iuniorum medicorum...(Colophon: Lyon, Johannes Crespin, 1532). 2 parts in 1 volume (bound in reverse order). 8vo. With armorial woodcut on title-page to the second part (bound as opening title-page), repeated several times in text, and numerous woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum, richly blind-tooled in a panel design.

Durling 930; Parkinson 505; cf. N.G. Siraisi, Avicenna in renaissance Italy: the canon and medical teaching in Italian universities after 1500 (1987), pp. 71-73. First and only edition of a work on the history of medicine by the French doctor Symphorien Champier (1472-1539). During his career Champier switched several times from being appreciative to critical towards Arab authors. In one of his earlier works, he describes Avicenna (Ibn Sina) as "a man of most outstanding genius and certainly the most distinguished of all" (Siraisi). On the other hand, he later criticised Italian doctors, "who allowed their schools to be occupied by 'Arabs, Persians, Indians and Mahometans'" (Siraisi). In the present work, which he wrote late in his career, he takes a more moderate view, admitting that Arabs indeed made useful contributions to the study of medicine, and calling Avicenna the noblest of them all. The text can be seen as a brief history of medicine, dividing it in three sections: Greek, Latin and Arabic medicine. For the Latin he makes a distinction between Latini, those who follow Galen and Hipprocrates (Boqrat), and barbari, those who set out their own path. With some manuscript annotations in the margins. The two parts bond in reverse order. Very slightly browned and some occasional minor spots. Binding has the corners bumped and the spine soiled. Overall a very good copy.
